The Raeburn

"Establishing shot: What's the first thing you notice as you arrive? What are your initial impressions?Located in Edinburgh’s wonderfully bougie New Town, the Raeburn is a circa-1832 Georgian mansion restored to perfection and opened in 2014 with 10 rooms. Thanks to its off-the-tourist path location in Stockbridge and the pub's status as a buzzy place to drink, it's a great place to come if you want to experience what it would be like to live among Edinburghers. Initially, the facade is a bit imposing—it could easily be a setting for one of Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" escapades—but look a bit closer at the austere entrance and you'll find hints of playfulness (the curlicues around the lampposts, for example). In summer, the scene's a little softer, with folks enjoying drinks in the forecourt area as you approach the doors. Is there a story behind this place? The building has been a hotel before—its previous incarnation, complete with shared bathrooms, closed in 2006. It's also been a pub, as well as a Christmas-tree yard. Wow. Now, on to the rooms—what can we expect from the accommodations? Anything unique to any of the rooms, suites we should try to nab, and so on?The 10 rooms have a nice sense of place; tweed headboards cleverly complement tartan pillows and throws of the same color scheme. There’s a sense of playfulness in the design, too: Room Five, for example, has a wardrobe that opens into a dressing room. The beds are comfortable, though light sleepers might want to bring earplugs—you're above a bar, after all. In the morning, preloaded Bose iPod docks and espresso machines get you going. Luxe bathrooms have Arran Aromatics toiletries as well as GHD hair straighteners. Minibars are stocked with free sodas. How about food and drink? Where should we go? What should we order? The bar here has established itself as one of the best in Edinburgh, with excellent cocktails that draw both tourists and locals. The brasserie serves a range of British classics, and they're definitely worth trying at least once; the stylish, vintage space only seats 70, however, so call ahead if you're looking to book during primetime. Breakfast features a trendy menu—yes, there's avocado toast. How's the service?Staff is unfailingly helpful, with a wonderfully convenient 24-hour check-in for those arriving from far-flung destinations at odd hours. If you call when you land, they'll arrange a taxi transfer. Who else are you likely to see here?Mostly couples on a romantic mini-break. What's the surrounding area like? Anything worth seeing nearby? How far is it to Edinburgh's main sights? The Raeburn has definitely made itself part of the Stockbridge nightlife scene—and locals have thoroughly embraced it. There's plenty to do, see, and eat within walking distance, and Princes Street is about a 15-minute walk up a (steep) hill. Come here to feel immersed in a cool neighborhood scene—versus having a nightcap in yet another hotel bar packed only with tourists. Is there anything you'd change? The wonderfully charming library is unfortunately closed for private events quite often, meaning that there aren't too many common rooms beyond the seating outside. Anything else we should know before booking a stay here? There's free onsite parking—just be sure to call ahead. There are also barbecues for guests to use. Bottom line: Worth it? Why?This is a happening place where you can pretend you're a local, even for a night." - Krystin Arneson

The Raeburn | Best places to stay in Edinburgh

"Edinburgh might be famous for its medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town, but it’s also home to a clutch of village-style enclaves on its fringes. One of these is picture-postcard Stockbridge, just down the cobbled hill from the New Town and close to the Botanical Gardens. A small river, the Water of Leith, runs through it and it’s peppered with delis, cafes and one cosy boutique hotel. The Raeburn is a 19th-century listed mansion with just 10 bedrooms; think wooden floors, roll-top tubs and a smattering of tartan. There’s a bar and restaurant but there’s no shortage of gourmet eateries on the doorstep. Ideal for those who prefer to dip into the city centre – but bed down in a quieter, quainter quarter. Just returned from a super 6 night stay in Edinburgh at The Raeburn. Staff are lovely - warm and helpful. Our room was spacious and had everything we needed (some bits I had to find, like the shower cap!). Bathroom was huge, spotless and modern. Daily Tunnocks teacakes are never a bad thing imho...|Breakfasts are excellent. Throughout our stay each of us had something different from the menu daily and everything was wonderful. We ate in the restaurant one evening, with another great experience. |The place itself is incredibly busy as a local bar and restaurant, which is testament to the service it offers. We often came back late afternoon to a lot of frivolity downstairs, but could not hear a thing in our room.|The Stockbridge area is lovely, with some nice little shops, lots of cafes, and excellent Sunday market and some excellent eateries (Sotto is particularly good!) In this regard if there is somewhere you really want to go while you are staying book it early. There was one restaurant we couldn't get into 3 days in advance, so gosh, that'll have to be another trip then!

We stayed at The Raeburn for our daughter’s 4th birthday and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The staff went above and beyond to make it special for her, and for us, which really made the stay memorable. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere, the room was spotless and comfortable, and everything felt easy from start to finish. We’re already looking forward to coming back this weekend to celebrate again, this time for her favourite Mac and cheese treat. A fantastic place for both family occasions and a r elaxed night away!

You must visit this place, it is an absolute gem ! I stayed at the Raeburn on Friday and Saturday night, and we were super delighted. This place oozes class, and I can not recommend it enough. I have worked in the pub industry for over 30 years, and I can assure you that this place is right up there as one of the best places I have visited. From the moment we entered the establishment, we were given a warm welcome, and nothing was too much trouble for the kind hearted staff. Our bags were taken to our room for us, whilst we we shown the bar area, where we enjoyed a couple of well made, and excellently presented drinks. Oasis were in town for the Friday and Saturday night, so the place was busy, but vibrant. The decor outstanding, the staff so friendly and attentive, the food was incredible, and the drinks range absolutely perfect, especially the Madri on draught !! I just want to personally thank the Raeburn team for making our trip to Edinburgh that bit more special, you have an amazing concept, of which you all should be very proud of.

We thouroughly enjoyed our stay at the Raeburn. Beautifully decorated and quiet room in the heart of lovely Stockbridge neighoorhood. The restaurant was lovely with friendly staff and serving very delicious/varied menu choices (we did both breakfasts & dinners). Kudos to the management of the Raeburn for assembling such a kind, helpful and friendly team. Can't wait to return!

We have stayed here several times and I cannot find a fault. The rooms are 5 star, stylish and well maintained. The breakfast is top quality and finishes at 11.30. |My only issue is that I tend to book late and you are normally full!|Otherwise my first choice.

Having stayed at the Raeburn on numerous occasions we cannot fault the staff, the cleanliness and the ambience of this lovely boutique hotel. The welcome is always warm and the staff are both professional and friendly. The quality hair straighteners and fan in bedrooms are very handy and the breakfast is delicious. |Most important of all is the personal touch both during the booking process and during the stay; an example to other hotels.|Diolch! Thank you

What a lovely, welcoming place! I was warmly greeted by the friendly bar staff and the host Abby was such a nice person. She took the time to speak to me and made sure I found a nice table to order my meal. Thank you. Make my first evening in Edinburgh a delight!

Great hotel in a wonderful neighborhood - Stockbridge. As it was August and peak festival/tourist time, this was an oasis from the crazy of downtown center. Room was well appointed and staff was friendly. This is a very busy bar & restaurant too so something always happening downstairs, we opted to eat and drink elsewhere, lots of choices in the neighborhood. Good walking distance to city center as well, only 1.4 miles. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant only. We stopped in randomly after being enticed by the music and Christmas lights. The interior was cozy and comfy, with Christmas decor and squashy velvet chairs. They were busy so service was a bit slow, but very accommodating and professional. My husband's fish and chips was one of the best I have tasted- perfectly light and flaky with a large slice of cod. I had a salad that was beautifully dressed, fresh, and well contrasted. They do allow dogs which meant we had some eye candy in the form of cute pups around us as well. I was super impressed.

Yelp
The Raeburn, became our go to place on our recent trip to Scotland. It was the first place we had a full lunch and it was the last place we dined before we headed home two weeks later. All the food was fabulous and we ordered quite a bit of the menu. The wait staff were attentive and pleasant. Each person that we interacted with seemed glad to have us there. The selection of wine and beer was extensive and well thought out. Everything paired well with each other. They have seating, both inside and outside and the inside seating is quite extensive and spread out. Don't forget dessert because they're always wonderful. They are quite a community restaurant, as I saw many locals visiting. Enjoy your next visit to Raeburn!

Yelp
Great place! After being denied a table at my freaking hotel I walked out in a slightly angry mood. Walked a kilometer or two & discovered this restaurant. My night was saved. Great food & service. Ended my dining experience with a great whisky and cheese dish.

Yelp
Was recommended by this spot as a family friendly dining venue. The minute we walked in, there were families in every corner - baby in highchairs, in prams, in the banquettes, with happy parents eating alongside them. We chose a couched corner and ordered the full Scottish breakfast and avo toast. Our v active toddler found lots of nooks and crannies to duck into, the staff were v sweet about his exploring, and accommodated the extra cups he requested and the spills he made. My husband found his platter to be delicious - beans, sausage, haggis, eggs, etc. were all made to his liking, and my toast had a generous portion of avo piled on. I docked just one star for turnaround as the plates took some time to come out, even though everyone around us appeared to be served already. Would recommend with or without kids!

Yelp
I have been dying to try this place because of its outside appearance and location so was very pleased to have a great experience in the restaurant after others seemed uncertain after their visits. The service was fantastic. We were greeted warmly at the door and our waiter was really attentive and helpful. Most of us had the amazing Eggs Benedict- three with salmon and one with bacon. Delicious! Our other friend had the vegetarian breakfast which she said was also, lovely! Add to that, the perfect flat whites, loose leaf teas and orange juice and you have a happy group of ladies. I love that dogs are allowed and the decor is modern gastropub at its best. On a sunny day there are tables out front and a lovely deck upstairs. Winning.

Yelp
There's no denying how beautiful The Raeburn is. I've walked past on many evenings; peering in, eager to satisfy my curiosity. Sadly, when I did get round to visiting, I found the Raeburn to be overpriced and a little too rowdy for my tastes. Service was also a little too snappy to be memorable enough to have me back again. Although, that library room is seriously beautiful. As you go in, look right. - It's stunning and would be wonderful and unique for a small event!

Yelp
We popped in here for drinks in the summer & sat out on the terrace through the back. Great wee spot & good table service by the staff. Gets quite crowded. Menu looks good but sadly we didn't have time to eat Definitely worthy of a return visit to try their menu.

Yelp
I was looking for an easy working lunch with a colleague and had also wanted to try the Raeburn for a while. I am happy to say everything from the service, wine list, food and setting was excellent. We were served by 2-3 staff members during what appeared to be a busy lunch for them, although it wasn't noticed in the service quality. The staff were eloquent in promoting the specials and providing recommendations on the menus. There was some great options for food, however, I have to admit we opted for the burgers (sometimes you just want some easy comfort food, even in the surroundings of the Raeburn). I thought my burger was excellent and well prepared however my colleague, who was Californian announced it was one of the best burgers he has had in many years! I think he made me appreciate the burger a little more, having an American say it was one of the best? Kudos to the staff and management! I look forward to coming many more times!

Yelp
I was visiting from out of town and happened upon this place while walking around Stockbridge. My family went in for dinner and drinks in the "bar" section. The food and drinks were all amazing!....Unfortunately our service was horrendous. We waited for around 30 minutes for drinks that we ordered. It took so long to get our drinks that the second time we just ordered two of everything because we knew it would be faster than waiting for them to bring us seconds. Despite this, we thoroughly enjoyed our appetizers and entrees. I would say that this is a good place if you aren't really in a rush and want a VERY slow and leisurely meal.

Yelp
Quite often pop in here if in Stockbridge. Nice addition to Stockbridge, not had food here yet but been for drinks a few times and they have spaces for locking up your bike. I've biked down a few times to sit in the beer garden which is lovely on a sunny day :-) So, why I like The Raeburn: Prices are actually decent Sitting outside in the summer House gin is Tanqueary and combined with the draft tonic, they do a great G&T Decent range of beers on tap Plenty of toilets in the ladies (always a bonus!) It can get really busy and service then can get a bit hit and miss. Will go back and have food.

Yelp
Went to the opening night of the Raeburn Hotel last week, and it was hopping. The staff was extremely friendly, and considering how new they are they were pretty efficient. It's a BIG place, and very noisy, and the lighting was a bit bright for my taste, but that can be fixed. What is more difficult to fix is that it comes off as just a bit ...*bland*. There are other places in Stockbridge that have a lot more personality. However, I am really looking forward to sitting outside on their huge patio when it gets a bit warmer (assuming that they will be putting tables out front when the weather cooperates). They do have a terrace with heat lamps on the first floor, but I don't know if it's open to the public, as there was a sign on the stairs saying 'residents only'. I didn't eat there, so I can't comment on the food, but my margaritas were well-made.

Yelp
I've yet to have a meal here but am looking forward to it immensely. The menu is fancy pub grub but I've been told it's pretty tasty. The reason I'm loving on The Raeburn is their fantastic outdoor terrace. I made the trek across town two days in a row just to sit outside and enjoy a drink in the sun. Equally enjoyed my time indoors when the sun decided it was only fleeting! Service could do with a bit of work to match the quality of the surroundings. We were left standing at the bar for 5 minutes after asking to see a menu and second time I was left at the bar after one of the bartenders so obviously saw me but walked out of the bar without so much as a 'someone will be with you shortly'. But with beer gardens few and far between in Edinburgh, I've no doubt I'll be back again soon.

Yelp
Popped in here for a few drinks after lunch in Stockbridge and was quite impressed. Great range of beers and spirits available and the bar staff I spoke to were pleasant and knowledgeable. Was quite a dressy crowd, though this could have been people out for Father's Day lunches and the atmosphere was quite relaxed. I'll definitely be back and would like to return for food at some point.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
The service was not good and we we here ignored and neglected for 30-49 min. After waiting so long for our food it came out bland and it didn't look fresh. We finish eating and we have to yell at the waiter to get our check. We don't recommend as a food or family place but it's a great spot to drink.

Yelp
I stayed here for 3 days and thoroughly enjoyed it... So much I needed to write a review. All of the staff are friendly and incredibly attentive. Ross the owner is there everyday in the mornings making sure every guest is 100% happy. My thanks goes out to everyone at The Raeburn that made my stay so incredibly comfortable! Thanks

Yelp
We haven't even stayed at the Raeburn yet and I'm giving them four stars! ... I'm sure it will be five stars after our stay! We'll be visiting Edinburgh in May, but we accidentally booked our rooms for February and, per hotel policy, we were charged when we no-showed. Emma, the Reception Manager, was fantastic! She helped us adjust our reservation and applied all of our charges as a pre-payment towards our visit in May. We can't wait for our visit when we already feel so well taken care of.

Yelp
Had a wonderful dinner here with a friend. It was a Sunday night, so pretty quiet. Service was pleasant. The drinks were wonderful and the menu easily fit our minimal appetites. Loved the Halloumi salad but I love Halloumi in any form. Be that as it may, I would definitely consider returning on my next visit to Edinburgh.

Yelp
Great for outside drinking on sunny days... and that's it. - Don't bother eating here, far too expensive for the boring menu and disinterested waiters.

Roy M.

Yelp
First (and last) visit here on Saturday 29/11/2014. Lunchtime, and Raeburn looked initially inviting, lovely decor which suggested a fine dining experience. We were seated at the rear in a pleasantly appointed booth; then things started to go wrong. After scanning the menu it appeared that if you don't like chips your choices will be limited. And so it proved, the menu is formulaic, you either take it or leave it! On being asked if it was possible to have the steak dish without chips, and potatoes or a salad as an alternative, it was made bluntly apparent that neither was even considered and dismissed out of hand by the waiter who clearly had no intention of attempting to fulfill his diners' requests. Must say his attitude spoiled the whole meal. So it shows that a simple inability to even attempt to meet a request can destroy the obvious good impression of the decor

Yelp
Came across the Raeburn and popped in for a bite to eat. Very impressed with the food, service, decor and value.
