The Rarebit

This restaurant was very close to our hotel. Maybe a ten minute walk. The atmosphere was good and they played all the best old school music. Our sever, Richard, was very nice, helpful and polite. He answered any questions we might’ve had , and seemed like an overall great person. My husband and I both ordered the Chicken Philly and fries, and it was delicious. We ended up ordering meals to-go, since we wanted to stay in the hotel for the remainder of the day, and those were great as well.

Visiting Charleston for a few days and stumbled upon this gem! Ambiance, food, and service were superb! Prices are an added bonus!

Good atmosphere, song list. BBQ pork sandwich was really good. Juicy and not too much sauce. Fried Chicken Sandwich served with hot sauce that wasn’t as good as I expected but still good. Fries were an exactly like I like them - a little flimsy, perfectly seasoned and darkened. Love the fries!!!

Staff was great!! But it was so freaking loud it was insane. We were DT at 11pm trying to look for a food place since a lot of places close the kitchen at 10pm and that place was the one open. So it’s good for a night out dinner. Food was mid. I think we paid $50 with a tip for 2 main meals and a soft drink. Not the place I would recommend to people outside of CHS but I guess it is a place to check out if you are a local and hungry at night haha

Normally I'm skeptical of hipster-looking restaurants with arugula, but my brother said it had good reviews. Among other things, we ordered the catch-of-the-day salmon sandwich, I got the fried flounder&shrimp, and the pork shoulder. Food was phenomenal. The fried seafood had that crispy cornmeal batter and lots of Old Bay seasoning. More importantly, the staff was very overwhelmed but kept their cool and were really nice people. Highly recommended!

Jen is the most amazing bartender anywhere!! We would go anywhere she works for sure! But man this place is an ice box can you turn down the AC please….also could you add a sauce for the vegan patty melt. Disney actually just raised the bar on a vegan patty melt and all it was is some sauce so simple. Please….we will be there once a week if you can…love the space would love more saucy vegan options!!!

Loved it! The food was so good. I had the catfish, and my husband had chicken and waffles. They were both excellent! atmosphere was really cool and out server was helpful.

I was walking in downtown Charleston and liked the name. It looked like a nice place for lunch. I was treated by the owner. He suggested their signature tomato soup. So I ordered tomato soup, a barbecue sandwich, and a wedge salad. It was delicious! Beautifully prepared. The salad had fresh chives, hard boiled egg, bacon, cherry tomatoes, and the right amount of homemade dressing. I tipped and complimented the chef. Something is good should be recognized. Delicious!

We ventured downtown for a full day of shopping. By 1 pm, I was fading quickly and needed a pick me up. We found ourselves in The Rarebit. This looks like a perfect place for a cocktail and I'd love to have one on a future visit. For this busy day, we stuck to water to rehydrate. Inside, it feels cozy and elegant, sort of that vintage cocktail bar feel with brass, rich colors and velvet draperies. The service was so friendly and prompt, without feeling rushed. I found the prices to be quite reasonable, especially on the sandwiches. The portion sizes were good, too--filling without being too large. I had the shrimp po boy with fries and my spouse had the grilled chicken club with mac and cheese. We both declared the fries to be the superior side, but I'm glad we tried the mac and cheese. It is good, but we liked the fries better. The shrimp po boy was great--very nicely balanced with the right amount of each topping. The shrimp was flavorful and crispy, without being too greasy. The sandwich stayed together nicely, which is a real achievement. I'm already looking forward to what we'll try on our next visit.

I'm vacationing in Charleston, my fiancé and I decided to have dinner at this recommended local spot. The host was VERY sweet and friendly! We were seated right away, and when a window seat opened up, they were very accommodating. To start, I had a local G&T, and my fiancé had a whiskey sour with a twist. Both drinks were okay, but not exceptional. For food, I ordered the vegan chicken sandwich, which was quite dry. However, adding remoulade sauce made it much better! Definitely helped the flavor and dryness. The fries were so good! Our total was about $60 for two entrées and two drinks, which felt normal for this type of spot. Our server was friendly but a bit neglectful. She seemed very scattered and/or spread thin, since she was the only person we saw running by around the restaurant. The place itself is small, with greenery and green accent walls giving it a modern feel. Very cozy. The walls have a lot of water damage, and the tables were wobbly and peeling, place defined needs a facelift. I wouldn't go back or go out of my way to recommend it.

On a hot, humid day, we were looking for a cool escape from shopping and sightseeing. The Rarebit was that escape. The A/C was working well and the lovely decor helped us mentally "get away" for lunch hour. The server was very attentive and explained DF and GF options to my husband. I ended up trying the delicious she crab soup along with the special of the day - fish sandwich and fries (perfectly cooked).

I wrapped up a night on King Street at the bar here. They offer a late-night breakfast menu, which was appealing, but my friend and I opted for just drinks. Our bartender was friendly, as were other patrons. I had the mule, and my friend had the gin and tonic. Both were good and well-made. Prices were reasonable, the bar seats were comfortable, and the vibe was chill, unlike some other spots in the area.

I found this place from google maps. I wanted a chicken sandwich, and they have one . It was so good ! It hit the spot with honey and bbq sauce. The pace is know for the Moscow Mule. I had mint julep. With a upscale look you know you're in for something good . It has an inviting pleasant atmosphere. Casual dress attire. We were greeted with good old southern hospitality . The owner took time and showed us local vodka , and bourbon. He was friendly

Delicious restaurant in downtown Charleston. Came here for a date night and everything was so delicious. I had a steak which was cooked perfectly and my husband had a BLT which he said was great too. I loved the macaroni and cheese, so creamy! Definitely recommend!

Stopped by midday and sat at the bar. It had a great diner vibe to it but also a gave up a nicer vibe. I bet the cocktails would be great there after work. Bartender was kind enough to ask the kitchen staff if they were able to make me the Chicken Fried Steak since I was like 30ish minutes away from when it was available so kudos to both for accommodating the request. The green beats were great and cooked well with a soft texture inside but left a crunch when you bit down on it. Wish there was more flavor to it, but a dash of salt did the trick. The chicken fried steak itself was great. Still had a good enough crunch when you bit down on the chicken. This is probably more preference, but I like my gravy to be more smooth and creamy. The gravy here had a grainy/sandy texture to it. The seasoning was great, just wished it was a smoother texture.

This is such a great find on king street! The food & drinks are delicious and affordable and the vibes were relaxed yet upscale. I came here on a Saturday night for dinner and sat at the bar where they serve a full menu. I had the Moscow mule for a cocktail and it was probably the best Moscow mule I have ever had! It's their speciality cocktail which they have on tap so I'd highly recommend ordering it. For food I had the fried chicken sandwich served with honey which was so delicious. I also shared a side of Parmesan fries that were great as well. Service was friendly and efficient throughout the meal. I'd overall recommend stopping by here if you're looking for a nice yet affordable place to eat and drink.

We only shared an order of fries as we popped in for cocktails. Fries were thin and crispy, and we crushed them. Our bartender was a local who helped us figure out some things to do and places to visit. The highlight of this place is the homemade ginger beer for their Moscow mules. We came back the next day just to have this delicious refreshing cocktail.

We ate here for the first time after meeting the owner across the street at a local bar. We hadn't been and hadn't even heard of it until then, but when we went on, I realized I had walked by it a million times! We went for Sunday lunch and really enjoyed our meal, I'm surprised it wasn't more crowded honestly. We shared a beet salad which was so yummy, then my husband had the fried chicken sandwich and I had the fish sandwich. I could only eat half so I enjoyed the rest for dinner. Looking forward to going back and trying more menu items.

We were heading out on a Thursday night before catching the comedy show down at the River dog Stadium. we were trying to think of something that we could grab that wasn't gonna be overly heavy, but also that was gonna be very satisfying. My wife had checked out, rarebit a few times and said that she thinks there were a couple things that I would enjoy on the menu. she nailed it because I am a BLT fanatic. The last couple places that we've been have offered up some of the saddest most depressing BLTs that I've ever had. I had to double check with the waitress and say hey BLT good and she let me know that it was amazing thick tomato slices. Thick cuts of bacon, crispy, lettuce everything I need and have it delivered I was very satisfied. I also thought it was very cool that they had a nonalcoholic ginger beer on tap. it was very refreshing and I enjoyed it very much. The restaurant itself is very cute. It's right off of King Street so it's right off in the middle of anything that you could be doing for the rest of your night. Definitely would recommend coming through here for drinks or to sample some of their daily specials, I will definitely be returning!

The food was very good. My husband love the Atlantic cod and shrimp special. It was a little spicy for my taste. I did eat it. The service was wonderful . Bartender was very kind and courteous. He has the personality for a restaurant and bar. The restaurant atmosphere was nice and music was very awesome. I would come back again. Waitress was very attentive as well. The chef was nice. He came out to talked to us.

The owner is a bit unsavory but the food and ambience are nice. I'd be sure to make sure the town is not flooded before traveling to this location.

Great spot with retro upscale diner vibes. The bar is expansive and bartenders are attentive. They serve food til midnight on weekends and are open late to pop in and grab a cocktail. Fried chicken sandwich was flavorful and well seasoned. Dirty martini was excellent.

About 5 minutes ago, I sat down at the bar asking for food recommendations. The bartender proceeded to recommend food only if so was going out or not going out. No solid choices or options other than alcohol consumption. After a stake smell inside, Incan't say that this left me confident to eat there. I left and didn't order.

We came here on a Saturday night. We did not have reservations and were able to be seated around 45 mins. We got a drink close by and stopped in for updates from the hostess We were seated in the back. The restaurant is decorated with a retro-esque style. We were able to find vegetarian options easily. We had the fried tomatoes and okra. The fried tomatoes were lightly breaded and definitely seasoned. They were good, not the best I've had, but very good. The fried okra was good as well, the okra is slimy inside but that's to be expected We both had the impossible burger. It was great, perfect mix of toppings and cheese. It is in my top three favorite veggie burgers. It does not come with fries, though, so we ordered a side of them.

Just a solid choice on Upper King. Fun, eclectic, friendly, reasonably priced and some fantastic cocktails. Bartenders give top notch service. Love the breakfast and seafood options or blue plate deals.

Located on trendy Upper King Street, this spot has been around for a few years and to be honest, we had forgotten about it. We dropped in on a Friday night before a holiday party for a drink and nibble and were pleasantly surprised. There was a holiday cocktail that was yummy and the fries as an appy were delicious. The service was quick and nice and we thought it was affordable. We were glad to be reminded of this local gem and plan to return.

Came here on a whim walking down King St and so glad we stopped! Unassuming exterior belies an incredible vibe on the inside. Service was prompt and attentive without being overbearing and our server was super nice. I got the pulled bbq pork sandwich with fries green tomatoes and remounted on the side. The sandwich was so flavorful and well balanced! I wished there was just a little more coleslaw and a little less pork but really it was near perfect. My husband got the shrimp po boy and side of fried okra- same deal! So perfectly delicious and all the ingredients blended so well. I had a bite of those things too and I was blown away. Highly recommended this little unassuming gem.

Who knew Moscow mules could be so unique and special! The rarebit is one of the funkiest spots in downtown Charleston and it's always a must stop when we visit! They specialize in Moscow mules (they have them on draft) and make their own ginger beer and ingredients. Each of these things makes their mules sooooo delicious! During happy hour you can snag one of these mules for $7! Today I got their seasonal mule which was a mix of their original laced with rose! I COULD HAVE DRANK 10, they were so amazing!

We went midday and were helped by the bartender. He could not have been nicer or more welcoming. My husband had an amazing cocktail, I had the catfish po boy, and it was one of my favorite meals in Charleston! My daughter had the mac and cheese side which she loved, and my husband had a pulled pork sandwich which was also great. I loved the decor. There were several restaurants in the same area and they were all pretty much empty while Rarebit had a nice sized group for 2-3pm.

Had an opportunity to try The Rarebit as Mario's Italian Ristorante @ 487 King Street system software was down and was therefore not accepting customers at the time. We looked left and then right and then across the street and decided to try The Rarebit. It looked appealing enough from the outside and we were pleasantly surprised when we went inside. The taller, very private cushiony booths line one wall, a large community table down the center and great sized extended bar area complete with television screens above make this restaurant a "go to" where the food is very good and the service is friendly, welcoming and accommodating. The bar seating is very comfortable and reminded me of my NJ days of eating at the counter. Think: cushion back diner stool! We dined a little after 4 pm and we were still able to get brunch!! Kind of unheard of but Yay!! My husband had a lavish Texas French Toast with fresh fruit and I ordered the Roasted Beet Salad. To my delight both red and yellow beets were used and accompanied by arugula, goat cheese, candied pecans & served with a lemon honey vinaigrette. I wouldn't have changed as thing because these are all of my favorite ingredients in this type of salad. Just to try an additional dressing as I love to explore different tastes, I asked the server for an additional honey mustard dressing and it was one of the better ones I've tasted around town. A bit sweeter, good texture and I'm always happy when the honey mustard dressing contains little mustard seeds in the dressing! Yum. Will return and definitely a nice unexpected find. Make sure to order an ice cold Moscow Mule!!

Came in for dinner, after a few min was greeted by the male host who barely spoke 2 words. He sat us with place settings and waters. After 10 min of being sat we walked out without even a greeting while the host played on his phone. Terrible first impression. You're a restaurant on King st on a Friday night, I expected way better.

I haven't had a meal this good in forever! My boyfriend got the country fried steak (he said it's impeccable), and I got the chicken and waffles. The ambiance is beautiful with great music taste, and all the servers are friendly. Cocktails are affordable and appropriate strength. We loved it so much we moved to the bar to continue our night!

Gosh I like this place, Cool vibe with atmospheric music. Had the okra side with Cajun remoulade as an appetizer and it was super tasty. We also shared the hand cut fries at the table. VERY sharable large portion. Wife had the beet salad and was very impressed too, definitely didn't skimp on the beets. My fried chicken was excellent, crispy and savory. Green beans tasted very fresh and the mashed potatoes and gravy were pure comfort food. Prices were very reasonable and we almost passed this place by as it looked kinda fancy. All day breakfast was an unexpected surprise. We had the chicken and waffles and waffles at the table and they looked awesome too. Drinks were fun, had the Phil Collins with some big flavors as well as the seasonal Moscow mule with pomegranate. Scrumptious!

Affordable yummies on King Street. Basically an upscale diner. Had the BLT, bread a little greaser than I would like but my friends PO'Boy was yummy. And my drink was amazing!! Worth a visit.

We're on our first trip to Charleston and Rarebit was recommended by our hotel as a good place for lunch. From the minute we walked in, it was exactly what we needed after a long trip - warm greetings from the staff, great atmosphere, and excellent Bloody Marys. I had my first ever shrimp and grits, which were outstanding!! My spouse enjoyed perfectly cooked steak and eggs and, I quote, the "best ever" mac and cheese. Our server, Kimberly, was a "12" out of "10" - genuinely friendly, very helpful and one of those people you are happy to have met along the way. Rarebit is definitely a find in a city with so many great options. Highly recommend when you visit Charleston!!

The food was served hot and fresh. I enjoyed the burger and fried green tomatoes. Portion size was good for the price. Would have rated this place 5, but the they were short handed and little slow to seat us. It took awhile but its was good food.

Service: (9/10)- the bartender named Rogan is very professional and a great worker. Y'all would be dumb to ever get rid of the guy. Food: (8/10). Shrimp and grits Drinks: (9/10 - mimosas ( fresh squeezed orange juice... or a least it taste like it.) This place isn't like a crazy nice to go and eat at. But it's a nice low country southern vibe with just the right amount of southern pop... like the mother of an ADIPI sorority chick that's from Charleston came in and decorated it with her husband that's a lowcountry duck hunter. I'd highly recommend this spot to my grandmother (old southern woman), or any respectable gentlemen and women from local sororities or fraternities to visit. Cheers

Fun place, great decor and atmosphere. Street parking can be tough, but the food more than makes up for it. Great beer selection, clean restrooms. Great for families and groups.

This was our first stop after arriving in Charleston. They are a solid 3.5 stars. They were serving Saturday brunch so we decided to try it out. They are known for their Moscow Mules and I see why! It's apparently a secret recipe and they are good! For my entree I chose the chicken and waffles. The chicken was cooked perfectly but it needed salt! That was disappointing. The waffle was dense and not airy like I'm used to. The butter was supposed to be some sort of honey butter but honestly I didn't taste that. It was gritty. Overall I think it's a good place to try. On my next visit I will try something different.

One of my favorite bars in charleston because they have great food and miles on draft. The fries are awesome, and I am a fan of the chicken sandwich. Consistent. Classy diner feel.

Finally made my way to rarebit after so long, started with the Moscow mule which they are so famous for. The mule was very good even though I'm not a Moscow mule gal but this was done well. I had the chicken sandwich and hubby had the burger and we split it. I think the chicken sandwich is better than the burger. The burger kept falling apart and sliding around.

Don't get the Mac and cheese or steak. The steak was really tough and hard to chew medium rare. Very scary. I had the patty melt twice in one month. It was great the first time and so-so the second time. The bread was as hard as a rock ..like eating a patty melt on two stale croutons. The server was nice butttttt..nah. Eating here once every few years is all you need.

Why no appetizers? Maybe the cocktails are great but if you're going to serve food, provide printed menus. No one enjoys this QR code nonsense, especially when there is virtually no cell phone service in the joint. Honestly I was surprised this place was still open, though I suspect it won't be long before it's a new space.

Best mule I've ever had, never too crowded, it's reasonably priced and the staff is so kind. I'd give as many stars as possible!

Ordered takeout with some coworkers last week. Breakfast is served all day (bonus) and so I ordered the omelet. It's made with three eggs, has some veggies, cheeses, and was cooked very well. Nice and fluffy. Could have used some bacon or something for a crunch, but overall, it was really good and filling. I would order from here again.

The wife daughter and I were looking for a late night meal after a concert when we came across the Rarebit. We each ordered the chicken and waffles, although I added eggs over easy with Bacon. The chicken and waffles were very good with perfectly cooked crispy fried chicken breast with syrup & honey butter. The chicken breast probably needed salted before being battered and fired, but otherwise perfect.

Horible service took 20 min for the server to stop by the table to greet herself and take our drinks party of 9 the table next to us arrived 10 min after we did and they got served first I told the manager and he ignored me the tables are dirty I cleaned up my small area and napkin definitely was dirty.

Sat down at the bar with one other customer and a couple tables. Took about five minutes to get just a glass of water and the bartender immediately walked away. I waited a few more minutes, the bartender took the table that walked in after me's food order and I assumed she would come to me after but instead went to the end of the bar to talk to the patron sitting there who seemed to have been a rep or someone who works within the company. I ended up walking out, pretty disappointed because I really wanted to try out the vegan menu. Service was just not good.

Very intimate, soft lighting, sultry background music, with full bar. I recommend ordering the farmers basket which is simply a vegetable sautéed dish which was very good but they ran out of mushrooms and didn't tell me until I asked about them missing. Honesty is the best policy which is why I rated them with 3 stars.

Hostess was so nice and accommodating!! Went above and beyond. Waitress made a fresh pot of coffee and was a delight. Food is spectacular!! Saw the chicken sandwich and chicken and waffles at the table before us - also looked delicious!! Patty melt had so much flavor and not greasy! Can't wait to go back!! Highly recommend!! Also loved ambiance!
