Where to Find the Best Yak-A-Mein in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Gretna’s beloved Real Pie Man is as popular for its Creole gumbo and yak-a-mein as it is for its counter full of lovely fruit pies. Pie Man’s brew comes with dark broth with layers of flavor, all-the-way boiled eggs, and big hunks of beef debris." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Got the crawfish cippie for the first time in many, many years after having been off their menu for said years, and I have to say, it was just ok. It tasted a bit watered down. The fried wings I got with it were stellar, though.

Google
The peach cobbler is so good. It's heavenly and everyone is so pleasant. Every time I go to get something to eat or a quick sweet treat 😋 it make me feel like I'm going to my grandma's house.

Google
Small shop, but great little pies. We got there late in the day, but the still had peach, apple and pecan little pies, as well as peach cobbler. Clean, reasonably priced and tasty!! Today I am regretting not getting more pie!!!! We will visit again!!!!

That Yaka Mein I got from The Real Pie Man restaurant? Absolutely delicious and so comforting. It was a really satisfying meal.

Since Hurricane Katrina I've been in Atlanta but every time I go back home to New Orleans I have to stop to get some gumbo from the Real Pie Man. There is no other that compares. Everything else they serve is good too especially the pasta.

Google
Usually really good but whoever's baking lately needs to do better.

Google
It was red bean Monday, and I had not cooked. So, my daughter and I stopped by to grab some from this restaurant. It was very reasonably priced for a large red bean. The beans were well seasoned without being salty. Plus, we were able to eat dinner for 2 nights! We will be back.

Google
I just got the sweet potato and pecan pies. Both were delicious.

Yelp
Not necessarily a hidden gem but a classic gem known to most locals . The Pie Man used to post up at many of the city's locations! I decided to stop in and grab a small Crawfish Stew and Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce for my post workout reward (Don't judge me lol). It was on from the first bite. That stew and bread pudding had me dancing. I immediately told my coworkers about it that night! The very next day, we ordered lunch here and I got the Bell Pepper plate with Crawfish Stew and it comes with a dessert. Today's dessert was Apple Pie and I took my coworker's cornbread. The bell pepper was not boiled enough to break with the fork and not seasoned enough to my liking, but it was still very good. The crawfish stew was the star of the show! Seasoned well and full of crawfish, potatoes, and smoked sausage. The Apple pie was so delicious, all it was missing was a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The corn bread was very dry, it definitely needed some honey and butter. Now I will add, the lady who took my order today was not the best over the phone. She could not give me my total, and could not tell me what the dessert of the day was, and even hung up in my face. But, in person, she was much better. Also, be ready for at least a 30 minute wait. This is not fast food, it is home cooking! Overall, this is a super cheap spot to get a lot of food. The pepper plate was $18 with taxes. Perfect for that home cooked meal you've been craving when you don't want to do the cooking. I'm going back to try more items!

Yelp
We recently ordered the baked chicken plate. The Real Pie Man was once a spot we loved! Now it's a ish hole! The customer service was awful & the food! We are very disappointed. The plate consisted of a small, dry leg quarter, which clearly indicates a lack of care in both preparation & portion size. Based on this experience, we will not be returning.

Damien H.

Yelp
It was not good at all. This leg quarter is small and dry no way they should be comfortable serving plates that looks like this.

Yelp
Loved my crawfish pie! It's was filled with moist dressing and fresh tender crawfish encrusted with a homemade warm freshly baked buttery crust. The red beans and rice have a savory seasoned meat with a sauce that soaks up the soft sticky rice. Everything on the menu is packed to go which makes it an essential must have for the Holidays.

Yelp
Food is nasty and it's too expensive. I would not recommend. Had gumbo and shrimp pasta

Yelp
A little hole in the wall take out spot with soul food. I had a small gumbo. It had a good amount of meat and was well worth the $6.50. I am all about service speed and it was kinda of slow. I want to go back for the crawfish stew. It looked soooo good!

Yelp
Just the most genuine person and the best food if you ever get a chance it cant miss!!

Alea C.

Yelp
I had the crawfish pie. I also had the catfish and the crawfish pasta. The crawfish pie was nice flaky and doughy it was good. I was expecting more spice. The catfish was decent. The crawfish pasta was good. I like my pasta running with cheese and sauce. But the owner explained they don't make "runny pasta". So I went home and added more cheese. Overall it was decent.

Yelp
The best food. Clean grease. Ms. Rose is hilarious. I love to see the gang. I go once a week. I love the food! They really give you a lot of fresh food!

Yelp
Listen! This review will be super short only to say: their pecan and sweet potato pies are BOMB!!! Perfect amount of flavor in these!

Paul M.

Yelp
Very good!! Great place to stop and try the pies. Lunch specials are excellent. Give it a try

Yelp
I absolutely love the gumbo here. We had a get together at our house for 20 people. I bought the gallon and It was plenty and delicious. Their gumbo is always consistently good. Actually, the gallon costs less than what I pay for ingredients to make it on my own. Love this place and I cannot wait to try something else from their vast menu.

Yelp
Decent food for a good price. No complaint at all. I ordered the Crawfish pasta with fried catfish fillet yakamein, chicken sausage shrimp gumbo, and sweet potato/ peach pie.

Yelp
I love to sample sweet potato pies from different areas I visit. After having one from the FQ market, I googled to find a local bakery/restaurant. Sunday night, The Real Pie Man popped up. I was staying on the West Bank so this was the perfect location for me as I headed back to CT. I ordered a few mini pies, and a man, possibly the owner, told me about the sweet potato muffin. I asked for one, then 2 more. As my deserts were being gathered, a woman/customer mentioned something about cake in the white styrofoam containers. I asked what kind it was and the man replied "pound cake." I requested 3 before he could show me the white icing on it. He opened each one so I could see what I was getting. Another customer teased me about my sweet tooth. After crossing into MS, I started with the pie.....smooth filling, firm, but moist crust. Favorable in a balanced way, no spice over powered the other. About 100 miles later, I went in on the pound cake. After the first bite, I wished I had more. The icing surrounded most of the hefty slice and complimented it well. The cake was tender, but not crumbly. Each time the fork went into the cake, it was like I was making tiny slices. It was baked to perfection, just like the muffin. The texture allowed each morsel to land in my mouth by fork and hand. The Real Pie Man has earned a spot in my foodie heart. I just wished I knew at the beginning of my stay. Any time I'm in town, I'm pulling up.

Yelp
Best place to get a quick bite on the West Bank. I highly recommend the Real Pie Man. Their food is delicious and it reminds me of my grandmother's cooking. The food is always hot and the desserts are really good not too sweet but just right. If you're looking for soul food or a great lunch spot the Real Pie Man trust me you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Tried the sweet potato pies and was not impressed at all. The texture of the filling was lacking as was the taste. The flavor did not flow freely from the filling, and the crust was just a plain white dough crust lacking in flavor also. (Rubbery, plastic)

Charlotte G.

Yelp
Best spot on the Westbank for home cooking! Always friendly service and food is always delicious!!!!

Yelp
I always stop for a pork chop on toast and the pie man never disappoints... I have never had a bad meal from this place! From the fried fish to the crawfish stew to the gumbo it's always so yummy! I'm a Local and ive been going here for years...The only thing I would suggest is for them to expand and renovate!

Yelp
I'm definitely a regular customer of The Pieman their food is always on point. The only thing they are lacking are their desserts like ooey gooey, brownies, peach cobbler, etc.

Yelp
All my local friends have very specific places they go for certain dishes. The Pie Man is in the lineup for yaka mein. I'm still hoping to try Linda's, and so far I've enjoyed Tiger's the best. I called in my order and the guy said 15 minutes. When you first get there you might miss it, because it looks like its located at an old service station. The food was ready and it made my whole car smell delicious. My friend and I ordered the yaka; she added gumbo. The pricing structure is pretty easy, as it's based on the size of the container: small 6, medium 8, large 10. I thought the yakamein was pretty good. A lot of tender, flavorful beef. But it wasn't exceptional. If you're in the area go for it. I wish I had more to say about it.

Yelp
I had the crawfish pie for $5. The crust was flaky & buttery. It had a nice flavor & good amount of crawfish inside. I'm going to try the crabmeat & the shrimp pie next time.

Yelp
Can't beat a home cooked meal from pie man. I've never had a pie but they look amazing! But their meals are out of sight!
google avatar

Wilbert M.

Yelp
The food is good sometimes the wait can be a little long. You can't make orders by phone which is convenient. In the pies are always a treat

Yelp
The Real Pie Man.... Doesn't look like much from the outside, but when it comes to plate lunches and pies they can't be matched in this area. The food and pies are made from scratch everyday, by Mrs. Rose and her team. Real food! There isn't anywhere to sit and eat just a counter and pie display. If your looking for real food real quick call ahead and place your order ( if you don't you'll have time to write a yelp review). Soul food from scratch a Westbank gem.

Yelp
The thing is, the Pie Man had a truck that would come to my school everyday at lunch time. I was wondering what the teachers were going so crazy about and what was in those tall styrofoam cups. One of my teachers bought my the gumbo and another bought me the crawfish pasta. I was hooked. I found myself getting the $4 cup of crawfish pasta everyday. WONDERFUL flavor and was consistant everytime. Now this was about 12 years ago. I visited my family in New Orleans earlier this year and remembered how good the food was there, but I never bought from the actual store. Always from the truck. I didn't think it would make a difference. I ordered the crawfish pasta hoping it would be what I remember. Total thumbs down.....sorry guys...but the pasta had no flavor. The sauce was bland and the crawfish was mushy. Soooooo disappointed. I'm hoping maybe it was a bad day. I tried the gumbo again too. Compared to the one my late grandmother used to make (still never had better gumbo than hers and the relatives before her), awful. I don't know why the truck was so much better than the actual building, but oh well...

Yelp
The Real Pie man used to come by the place I worked at like 15 years ago. He would carry a tray with small pies and sell them as he drove around local businesses. I used to buy his pies and I must say they are really good. One day a couple of years ago, I was driving in Gretna and I saw this place. I am very happy for the pie man as the place seemed to be thriving. I have eaten there a few times since then. Here is my sense if the place. They still sell their pies that made them famous but now they sell seafood and sandwiches and local type fare. Their gumbo, crawfish bread, and crawfish pies are to die for. The jambalaya is good too. Not the tomatoey creoly Jambalaya but more like the one you will find out in the countryside of Acadiana. I did get a bad report from a friend that went there... the the pie he ate was terrible... kind of dry and stale. I have never had that happen. And as much as these people sell... I find that inexplicable. I do not stop here very often though. There is usually a wait. It is a take-out place and people are always waiting. The service is not too friendly and they take their sweet time getting to you. If you get there a bit after lunch time, it is a crapshoot whether the dish you are looking for has run out. If you can get there before noon, it is definitely worth a stop.

Yelp
This is the best place for Louisiana cuisine. The gumbo, stuffed breads, fried chicken, pork chops, assorted pies, and pastas are truly delicious. The pies are great, but the gumbo steals your soul. The place is dine out only and it's not uncommon to see patrons eating the food in their cars as soon as they leave. Trust me, this hidden gem is a local favorite and a national treasure.

Yelp
Great food --gumbo, chicken and Bbq sausage really 'delish'-- crawfish pie great flavor but pie crush kinda 'doughy'

Yelp
NEVER AGAIN! If awful customer service and not so clean decor is your thing, then this is the place for you. I placed a phone order, ( I inquired if they actually took phone orders because I didn't know) the lady that answered the phone was loud and obnoxious "UHHH YEAH GO AHEADDDDDDD I'M LISTENING".......then after a long pause of me deciding to hang up or not, I go ahead with my order and ask about a grilled cheese sandwich..she goes "WE DON'T GOT NO GRILLED CHEESE", I should have known to hang up and go somewhere else for lunch then. But nope, being the person I am wanting to support small businesses, I went ahead and placed my order. So I get there and the counter lady is outside smoking just looking like she's over everything, she walks inside the same time as I do. Im guessing the lady who took the phone order was at the counter, she asked if she could help me and I told her I Placed a phone order. I could see through her thick glasses that she rolled her eyes and went to the back. Meanwhile the lady who had just walked in is rolling her eyes and is just not welcoming, I wanted to walk out so bad but, still, being the person I am I wanted to support the small business. I paid for my food and left with the intention of NEVER going back to this dirty place with rude employees. I see why they fell off so hard, they use to be the hottest place to go get a fish plate or something from but now it's just an eye sore on the corner that should be tore down. I'm still confused as to why the Health Inspectors have this place still open. Before you open the door you can SEE about 20 violations. Eh, it's my fault, but usually the run down places have the best food lol. Oh, by the way. The gumbo was nasty and bland too.. I had to add my own hot sauce to TRY to add flavor, it didn't work. My lips are greasy as I type this fooling around with that gumbo. Smh

Yelp
I had the red beans and rice with fried catfish. The husband had red beans and rice with a pork chop. We shared a side of mac n cheese. Our dinners were super good. My catfish was a tad salty but not to the point where it was ruined. A squeeze of lemon would've helped. The mac n cheese was sooooo good. We also had dessert, oooey gooey cake for me and still warm fresh from the oven peach cobbler for hubby. Both were amazing. I would definitely go back to devour their other menu items. It's take out only but don't let that or the storefront put you off, it's good food!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
We got the red beans. It is excellent!! He also sells pecan cookies. They are absolutely delicious. Would definitely order from him again!!

Yelp
The BEST BBQ smoked sausage I have had in ages. We were passing through on tour and stopped by this place to get a bite. Holy ****, the best, go to it! Eat it! Love it!

Jordan A.

Yelp
It would be 5 stars if they had food!! they are always out of everything. I drove all the way from Tennessee for the Crawfish Cippy like WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY UGGHHHHHHHHHH

Yelp
When in Louisiana ya have to ask the locals where to eat. A few told us we needed to make the drive 20mins to the Real Pie man because we wanted gumbo. So we did. So glad we did! Gumbo is delicious! Nice big fresh shrimp and hunks of chicken. Gumbo was thinner than I'm used to, but did not lack in flavor. My husband got a crawfish pie. The pie was not as juicy as we are used to, but all the flavor was there. The crust is excellent. Nice and puffy and a perfect thickness. Had a good amount of crawfish for the pie. Prices were about what we have been paying around town, higher than Texas prices, but seem to be the average for around here. Definitely worth the stop, we love hole in the wall small business places!
