I love to sample sweet potato pies from different areas I visit. After having one from the FQ market, I googled to find a local bakery/restaurant. Sunday night, The Real Pie Man popped up. I was staying on the West Bank so this was the perfect location for me as I headed back to CT. I ordered a few mini pies, and a man, possibly the owner, told me about the sweet potato muffin. I asked for one, then 2 more. As my deserts were being gathered, a woman/customer mentioned something about cake in the white styrofoam containers. I asked what kind it was and the man replied "pound cake." I requested 3 before he could show me the white icing on it. He opened each one so I could see what I was getting. Another customer teased me about my sweet tooth.
After crossing into MS, I started with the pie.....smooth filling, firm, but moist crust. Favorable in a balanced way, no spice over powered the other. About 100 miles later, I went in on the pound cake. After the first bite, I wished I had more. The icing surrounded most of the hefty slice and complimented it well. The cake was tender, but not crumbly. Each time the fork went into the cake, it was like I was making tiny slices. It was baked to perfection, just like the muffin. The texture allowed each morsel to land in my mouth by fork and hand. The Real Pie Man has earned a spot in my foodie heart. I just wished I knew at the beginning of my stay. Any time I'm in town, I'm pulling up.
