15 Best Pasta Places Around D.C.

"The mezzi rigatoni with fennel sausage and pecorino from this Bloomingdale standby is one of D.C.’s most iconic dishes — as well as a date-night favorite of the President and First Lady. Crispy arancini cacio e pepe with herb aioli hits the spot, as will chef Mike Friedman’s squid ink linguini loaded with calamari. Friedman recently expanded to Maryland with the opening of Roman-styled Aventino and AP Pizza Shop in Bethesda." - Tierney Plumb, Mekita Rivas

I came to the Red Hen Cafe to take on their BIG MOMMA CHALLENGE. The BIG MOMMA is a huge 3 pound pancake. The challenge is if you can eat it all in less than 20 minutes, it's absolutely free. If you can't finish it, it's $15.99 plus tax. I was able to finish about 20% of it before giving up. Definitely not as easy as one would think, that's for sure however I was told that last week someone set a record eating it in less than 12 minutes. My friend ordered the Garden omelette, hash browns (extra crispy) and french toast. All their food looked really good especially the chicken fried steak that we had seen someone order next to us. This place has a very warm, welcoming atmosphere and our waitress Jenny was absolutely great. Definitely have plans to go back.

Red Hen Café is a charming stop along Route 66 and a must-visit if you’re in the area. The atmosphere feels cozy and nostalgic — perfect for a classic diner experience. The staff were super friendly and made us feel right at home. The food was delicious and comforting, just what you’d hope for on a road trip. Portions were generous and prices reasonable. A great place to grab a hearty meal and enjoy some small-town charm. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re driving Route 66!

My tuna sandwich was bland not enough mayo, personally I prefer miracle whip style mayo. Had I not got the sandwich with rye bread and red onions ,I think the sandwich would have gone back to the kitchen. My daughters breakfast burrito "looked" great but the eggs inside were scrambled and over fried and over done, grossed her out. I asked her if she wanted to exchange for something else and she said no,so I honored her feelings as I like to teach our kids to fend for themselves and not do things for them. My wife's veggie skillet scramble was very good according to her. As I looked around the restaurant the food looked pretty good especially the breakfast. Next time I will try just the breakfast,i would recommend if you order scrambled eggs ,ask that they not be over fried and overdone. It used to be mollies country cafe which I was banking on going today and was surprised to see it gone and replaced by the red hen. I will go back and give it a second try.the waitresses and cashiers were great and friendly. Out of 3 orders, 1 was good (my wife's veggie skillet scrambler), 2 were not good.

This place is a Hidden Gem, and I can see why. From the first bite I was doing my happy dance, I recommend anything on the menu. But the biscuits and gravy, pancakes, country breakfast, Paul Bunyan, waffles, are the most popular. Don’t even get me started on the service. The service is excellent from the moment you walk into this restaurant they greet you till you walk right out. The girls here are polite are on top of filling up your coffee to asking if you need any condiments to even simple conversation with you. This is my first time trying this restaurant and believe me when I say it will not be my last. Soon they will be greeting me like they do most of their customers by their first name.

First time we have been here since they changed hands from Molly Brown's. Very happy to say, the Red Hen Cafe is just as good, possibly even better than before. Great selection of breakfast lunch, sandwiches and Specialty items, and a nice selection of Mexican food also. The food is outstanding, and the service is great. Good luck to the new owners. I hope the Red Hen Cafe is here to stay.

This place changed in recent months from Molly Brown's to Red Hen Cafe. So we came to try it out and it was pretty good. I decided to try a burger even though I was leaning towards breakfast. The burger was okay. It was fresh, thick and juicy. But I would give it a 7 out of 10. The service was amazing and the atmosphere very nice. It totally has a country feel to it and that's pretty cool. When I come back I'll be trying out some breakfast which I'm sure will not disappoint.

Yelp
This is a cute cafe on Route 66. I remember this used to be a Molly Brown's restaurant. Now it has been updated in a cheerful red paint. It is a nice drive to the cafe especially if one is headed to Barstow. The menu has many items to choose from. I had the Paul Bunyan because I wanted to try all the breakfast meats plus eggs and home fries. The home fries had a delicious perfect ratio of green peppers and onions to potatoes. I had the eggs scrambled and they were also delicious with a good flavor. The meal came with a choice of either pancakes or French toast. I chose pancakes. There were two and both were very tall and fluffy with crispy edges. The breakfast meats consisted of a bone-in ham steak, two link sausages, and two thick slices of bacon. I really enjoyed the ham which was tender and very flavorful without being too salty. All in all, I had an excellent breakfast and experience at The Red Hen Cafe. The waitstaff were friendly and efficient. There is also ample parking in the lot. A definite return in the future to this place will be planned.

Yelp
Great food, kind service and a hometown feel. Makes you feel like you went home to visit your folks on the old farm. Coffee was pretty decent. There was an old man whom I overheard at the register. His card ended up declining and the lady was so sweet and said he could come back and take care of it the next day. He was an obvious regular but you sure don't run into that anymore. Just had that old town feel. Sweet little spot off old Route 66.

Yelp
This is a trusty cafe that serves hearty portions of standard breakfast and lunch fare. During the fall-spring they offer a dinner service as well. The service is outstanding- the servers remember you AND your order. The food is good, fresh, and plentiful. The country decor is inviting and you feel right at home. Like any "country cafe" some of the ingredients can have a bit of wait to get onto your plate. For example the candied walnuts were a little off and some of the cucumbers were a bit soggy, but overall the meal was great. Not pictured is the slice of peach pie that was boxed up to go. Their fruit pies are made by the Red Hen herself- Brie. They are DELICIOUS.

Yelp
My job takes me everywhere and I'm glad it took me here. Cozy little cafe right off Route 66. Friendly staff and amazing food. They don't hold back on their servings. I left there full and happy. I ordered their chicken apple sausage which I've never eaten. So delicious and fresh. Also enjoyed their home fries. I really did enjoy my experience.

Yelp
We drove down from Lake Arrowhead to have breakfast here after seeing them on IG. It was everything we were hoping it would be. Delightful little restaurant with excellent food and very friendly customer service. We ordered the chocolate chip pancakes, chicken fried steak skillet w/ banana bread and the corned beef hash & eggs w/ hash browns and biscuit and gravy. Everything was really great. We both got our eggs cooked over easy and they were perfect. You can tell that everything is made from scratch and with care. We will definitely be going back many times to try more things on the menu!

Yelp
My husband and I discovered this place via a google search. We live like 8 mins away and pass it all the time and never realized it was there. We decided to try it for breakfast on Sunday, great choice we must say. The atmosphere was great , the waitress was great and most of all the food was great. We will for sure be back on a regular basis.

Yelp
Amazing diner food made with fantastic ingredients. Whether you go for the French Toast and (house made) Cinnamon Roll or a basic omelette you can't go wrong. The staff is super friendly and the kitchen was very fast. I highly recommend a stop here if you can.

Yelp
This place gets very busy. The servers do their best to keep up with attention, orders, and keeping folks happy. Country music plays in the background, but not too loudly. I got the Chicken walnut salad. The chicken was perfectly grilled, lettuce fresh, and the amount of raspberry dressing was just right, not overpowering. The cucumbers were not the freshest, walnuts were candied into larger chunks than necessary. The addition of fresh strawberries and apples were quite welcome and delicious.

Yelp
The best and coziest little breakfast nook in the high desert. Sometimes it seems packed but the waitresses always make you feel welcome, not like you're inconveniencing them. It definitely feels like someone's warm home. They are very generous with their portions.

Yelp
This is an amazing little gem on Route 66. The food and portion sizes are incredible for the price. The staff is really friendly and provided us with great service. The ambiance and decor is a throw back to the past and looks great. Kudos to the ownership and staff. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Food, Decor, Service... all great!! Even had excellent vegan breakfast options. We traveled the entire Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica and this was the best restaurant food of the trip. No joke. Don't pass this one up. It's in the middle of nowhere, so keep your eyes open.
