One of the best coffee shops I’ve stopped at in a while! They have unique offerings like a charcoal latte (which I got) and the basics as well. The charcoal latte was super creamy and a total delight. They offer vegan and non-vegan baked goods. Vegan ones were awesome. Ginger molasses cookie reminded me of the holidays because of the gingerbread flavor

First time here the ice latte was great the poppyseed scone not so tasty. Great company and atmosphere.

The red hook is a great little coffee shop and that offers some really good baked goods as well. It’s a very popular spot in Ferndale. The coffee is excellent. They have some really good pastries, including pop tart knock off which is about 1000 times better than an actual pop tart. Prices are OK here but you’re gonna pay a little bit for being in downtown Ferndale and for really quality food and beverage. The line can be a few people deep, but it always moves very fast. The staff here is always super friendly and willing to answer your questions. The one thing I didn’t enjoy too much was the chai tea latte- a little too thin in spices for my tastes. However, I think a lot of people probably really do like it. They really take care in roasting coffee. unfortunately they do not allow pets so you’ll have to have somebody there to wait outside with your puppy. Overall highly recommend red hook.

On the main street in Ferndale, a busy stop. Great to grab a treat and walk around the area. There are a few tables inside but no comfy spots to relax. It was busy this Saturday morning, took about 15 standing in line, but there was a special event in the area. The prices were reasonable and the staff was very friendly.

Today I was really disappointed with a visit to the Red Hook Cafe. It was our first day out after a family of 5, after my daughter was born on Sunday. We decided to visit the Red Hook Cafe for a cafe date with our newest family member. We visited during the last hour of business, and being fully aware of this, and the weather, we we’re trying to leave urgently due to the snow storm rolling in. However, my 3 year old daughter had to use the restroom right before we left so I took her to go. Joe, the employee working the cash register, then went over to the table and said “we’re closing.” to my wife, which then she explained that I was taking our daughter to the restroom. He responded with “well, maybe you can help by cleaning up your table” in a grumpy instructive voice, acting as if she was visiting his house and outstaying her welcome. My wife is 5 days postpartum. Once she told me this wonderful news, I went and calmly, yet firmly confronted Joe about this rude gesture towards my wife, and explained that my wife was 5 days postpartum. I told him to not instruct her to clean up the table, and asked if that was part of the service of the cafe. (I actually had to clean the table we sat at before sitting down when we first arrived 🤔). He said “I don’t care. I’m annoyed that you asked what time it was 20min ago and you’re still here” as his face twitched in petty irritation. He also said “I’d be pretty annoyed if you were at my house and left a mess.” assuming we weren’t going to clean up before leaving. As we were discussing the issue, someone had come in the front door. He then said “See?! This is why you need to leave because more people will be walking in”. I reminded him that he is the employee and can lock the front door, I am not responsible for the patron entering his cafe. Joe, we really need to do better. Yes times are tough, and the weather was picking up, but we should all be a little more gentle and understanding with each other. We are the ones who will make our community a better place with these daily interactions. And Joe, if you were having a bad day, and are going through something, I am sorry, but you can’t take that out on other people. I genuinely hope you got home safely in the snowstorm, and you have a better day tomorrow.

Google
Wonderful place! I'm a basic betty, but I can assert that they have a truly delicious vanilla latte. Really tasty eggy pop overs and salted caramel chocolate cake (plus lots more). Kind employees.

Google
Friendly, engaging, patient, and helpful staff. We were in town visiting for the first time. The special was a beet root (powder) latte with cardamom and ginger. I ordered mine with coconut milk. It was delicious!! (The right amount of sweetness too.) The Superfood cookie was perfect. Not too sweet and with the right amount of ingredients. My husband said the black coffee was good along with the blueberry corn muffin. The chalkboard noted homemade lavender, and cardamom syrups. Next time I'm in town, I'll be back!

The bakery is situated inside a small cafe, Red Hook on Nine mile Rd. and can be easily overlooked. The bakery has changed ownership but the high quality of their products has not. It's most likely that the two businesses will become one. The range of tastes and textures in a simple rustic setting is wonderful.

Yelp
Decided to try this place out based on the other reviews. It's a cute, cozy and comfy place. Daughter asked for an iced coffee and lemon cake and enjoyed her choices. Said the cake was very sweet. I opted for a mocha with skim milk and a banana chocolate malt scone. I love scones and this one had a great flavor and was not dry like some can be.

Mark L.

Yelp
Small cafe in Ferndale. I had coffee and a piece of ginger-maple bread (not sure of the actual name). The coffee was very good. The bread was good,as well. A little on the sweet side. The shop had the usual variety of coffee and coffee drinks along with various baked goods. The baked goods looks "fresh made", and some uncommon baked items, like some sort of giant baked rice Krispy thingy. Service was friendly and fast. There is seating inside and outside. Most of the table are for 2 people.

Rachel B.

Yelp
I came here for the first time a couple weeks ago and it won't be my last. I got a brewed coffee and an apple scone. The scone was perfectly baked and not too sweet. Eager to try their other baked goods.

Saphace A.

Yelp
Gotta check out a local chain! There's parking in the lot in the back. You can access the cafe from the front or back of the building. Lots of pastries here! Including vegan options too! I got a cortado with lavender. For some reason it was decent but not my fave. I do want to try a different flavor. Cute place! Not large. No seating inside for now. Lots of plants in there that are thriving! They've got large windows in the front that allow lots of light in.

Nyla J.

Yelp
There is no Splenda but the brown sugar is good. I hada latte that was good . The Galette was delightful! I ate it so fast i couldn't even take a pic. It's so cute in the inside and lgbtqia+ friendly. The service was fast and friendly. I would go again.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop in downtown Ferndale. I had the iced chai tea latte and it was very refreshing. My husband ordered golden milk (mainly because he was intrigued with the name).. he said it was interesting but not sure if he'd get it again.. apparently it had turmeric spice and fresh ground pepper in it? The latte art was beautiful though!

Yelp
Although it was warm for a January, it was still a cold morning when a friend and I met up for coffee. Restaurants were still closed for COVID so we checked out the display of pastries and baked goods placed temporarily at the front of the café and placed our order at the takeout window. The line was short and it moved very quickly. With our goodies, we made our way to a nearby bench to catch up with each other while trying to stay warm. Since COVID cases were still increasing, I decided to leave my mask on and eat only when I returned home. It was a good decision since I was able to pop the goodies into the oven for a quick warm up. I had selected the egg biscuit and bacon/cheddar popover for breakfast and a galette for another day. In addition to those items, there were scones, cakes, cookies, and macarons available. I think I saw a cinnamon roll, as well; I am still surprised that I resisted. The egg biscuit was spectacular. That is the only word to describe the tasty, tender and flaky biscuit with the delicious egg topped with a slice of melted white cheddar. The sandwich was so thick I nibbled around it. I am so haunted by how good it was. And even now, several days later, I am still thinking of it. The popover was different from what I expected. Instead of something similar to Yorkshire pudding, this was comparable to a Red Lobster biscuit, but with a soft center, topped with cheddar and bacon. It was small but good. The galette was okay. Filled with mushrooms, sliced small potatoes, and sunflower seeds, it was a flaky, creative lunch treat. I will definitely return - probably earlier than I typically would, especially given the distance from home.

Yelp
The coffee and pastries are good but not the most welcoming place. The staff has changed and the energy as well.

Alysia T.

Yelp
Very fast and lots of places to sit, it has become my favorite place to stop for a cappuccino and while I'm in Ferndale. The coffee and pastries they have are delicious, the everything bagel scone changed my life

Marin G.

Yelp
The pasties are delicious and I'm obsessed with the black tonic! Staff is friendly and it's a pleasure to give them my business. I'm addicted! Thanks for everything! Love it here!

Nicole E.

Yelp
Got an immunity shot (Drought), spearmint tea and a lavender latte. The immunity shot from Drought is intense and potent. Felt a boost of energy from it. It burns a little at the back of the gulp. The spearmint smells nicely and effervescent even though it's just a teabag. The lavender latte doesn't have a strong lavender scent to it, tastes okay. Total $12.23.

Yelp
Came here for the first time and saw they had banana bread loaves. Now, I'm suuuuper picky about my banana bread and was leery about it because the price was $10. I've paid $10+ for loaves before at other places and they were dry as hell, and most definitely not worth the price. Let me tell you... this was the BEST banana bread I've ever purchased!!! So heavy, so moist and so goddamn delicious, it needed a review!!! This bread is FIRE and if you stop in here and they have it... BUY A LOAF!!!!

Muhammed E.

Yelp
It has been a few years since I last came here, and things were surely different. The lobby is now closed off to customers and Red Hook introduced a walk up window in place of their lobby. Part of the whole experience of Red Hook that I really enjoyed was being able to go in and get that freshly baked desserts blended with coffee aroma. There are still a few tables out front on the sidewalk, but this coffee shop is always busy so getting a table will require perfect timing (or good luck). It will be nice to see their lobby be open once again, and hopefully it will be soon.

Eowyn K.

Yelp
Bacon cheddar popover. My friend picked a couple up for us so we could could have a light breakfast. They were unassuming, just there at the register when he was getting coffee, an afterthought to the order. I ate mine first. He did not believe me that this little biscuit packed such flavor and texture in what appeared to be a boring biscuit. Then he ate it. Though mmmmm, this is so good, he described it as a flavor organism. We will be going back many times in the future just for this. (The coffee is also solid, though the size is a bit small for price point.) And that little biscuit deserves every bit of a five star review.

Mary M.

Yelp
This is closer to a 3.5 star review instead of a straight 3 star review. I came in here for a drink after brunch but prior to going to the AR Workshop. They are a closer to a traditional coffee shop rather then a Starbucks/Coffee Beanery/etc. So if you are going into here looking for name brand type of drinks, this is not the place. They have both regular milk and non cow's based milk which is nice especially if you don't normally drink a lot of cow's milk. I had a hot chocolate with almond milk which was decent but not great. It was not super hot which was on a cold day is what I was looking for. The cool thing about here was that there were gluten free food. I did not try the brownie to know if it was good. I also had the feeling based on how the food was setup, the food changes by the day. It would be interesting to see. I will probably be back given the lack of the "box" coffee drink places in the heart of Ferndale.

Chelsea C.

Yelp
Lucky to have within walking distance. I am there quite often for coffee, treats, and to stock up on grounds for the week.

Bradley M.

Yelp
Came here for a couple of lattes. Only lavender and sage to choose from for flavors. I got lavender and it was very weak in flavor and tasted watered down. People working were very nice and this place has a great location. Just was a miss for me. Perhaps it was just a bad order by me as the reviews look good here.

Sean B.

Yelp
Amazing selection of baked goods. Personally recommend the chocolate zucchini bread. Coffee is great and two cold brews on tap. Staff is always very nice.

L S.

Yelp
The coffee is fantastic. The variety of baked goods is amazing. It changes seasonally. And the employees are always very nice.

Jennifer W.

Yelp
I came here specifically for the oatmeal cream pie which receives rave reviews. It's delicious. I should have ordered two. I walked past the first time because the sign is small, and the entrance is smaller than the others surrounding it. Thank goodness for my phone GPS.

Michael P.

Yelp
So... this place is small. For that reason, I don't want to tell you about it. I don't want to tell you that the moca cafe is chocolaty-coffee goodness. I don't want to tell you that the service is quick and with a smile. If I tell you these things, you will go, the place will become crowded. So please don't listen to me. If you do, you will go and have a great experience. Consider this a warning. Décor: 3 out of 5 Food: 3 out of 5 Drinks: 4 out of 5 Service: 4 out of 5 Cleanliness: 4 out of 5

Yelp
Came here on Sunday with perfect weather and I sat outside enjoying a small cup of macchiato. Had a garlic pepperjack pop over (woops...ate it before I remember to take a pic). The popover was delicioussss. First time having a popover and I am pleasantly surprised. I think I find my favorite pastry. Totally got attracted by the smell inside the coffee shop and trusting my gut is great.

Heather L.

Yelp
Great LITTLE coffee shop in Ferndale. Makes a tasty (and pretty) Latte. They also have a nice selection of sweet and savory bake goods

Laura E.

Yelp
The Red Hook is legit. A cozy coffee shop with the best espresso drinks in Ferndale, and a bakery case worthy of a 5 star review of its own. Sure, it's kinda hipster, but Red Hook had been a fixture on 9 mile for 8 solid years now. It's a community spot where you'll run into, well, everyone. From service workers grabbing a cup of coffee before they shuffle into the boutiques on 9 mile, to local writers, artists and entrepreneurs hunched over laptops. Noticeably present too, are the moms and dads with kids in tow. With a coloring/reading nook in the back hallway, this is a small but lovely spot to stop with kids for a bit. Don't expect open seating at peak coffeeshop hours. This spot is busy, and there is only seating for about 10 people inside. Summer brings additional outdoor seating, which makes for a great sunny, people watching spot. I drink the Cortado, and highly recommend it. It is served in a small glass, but it's exactly the proportions I like, about 50/50 espresso & cream. (Note: do not order a Cortado to-go, unless you like holding a Dixie cup while you drive. Ask me how I know.) The iced chai is my second choice. And never disappoints. Do yourself a favor, and pair your drink with a baked good. The case is full of cookies, savory scones, spiced loaf, macarons, bars, the works! Try the almond tart w raspberries. Not too sweet, and a great small portion that won't make you feel toooo guilty. Best eaten on-site, with a fork and a plate. Vegan? Not a problem, they have several vegan cookies and loaves baked fresh. The vegan chocolate zucchini is scrumptious. And naturally they offer almond milk substitutes for beverages. Park in the back parking lot, or grab a street spot out front. The parking meter will cost 50c per hour (soon to be $1 per hour) and it's worth it, because you're near so many cute shops and have time to pop in to browse before you go.

Brian B.

Yelp
Large (20 oz/venti) Red eye for only $4 (cheaper than Starbucks) Fast, fresh, and delicious coffee that will make your car smell incredible as you take it to go from one of the friendly and engaged staff; I will be returning regularly :)

Aparna B.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with great coffee and homemade pastries. Stopped in here for a quick latte before dinner. I'm glad I did! The decor is shabby chic, staff was friendly, the medium latte I ordered was delicious, and beautiful with latte art! They share their space with Pinwheel Bakery so all the pastries looked and sounded delicious; they even had some vegan options, which is always a plus. I picked up some macarons too which were so light, airy and flavorful. Nice little cafe located between some great restaurants in Ferndale!

Tiffany D.

Yelp
Coffee is wonderful (Stumptown) and the pastries are great too! Pastries are from Pinwheel Bakery - there were savory and sweet choices (Macarons, cookies, etc) when I went. I had the open-faced veggie galette and it was out of this world - get it toasted, you won't regret it! The coffee shop is dedicated to being green too, which is a plus in my book. They use tableware when you're staying awhile, and have compostable cups for those on the go. One big downer is the internet is horrendous - it didn't even work in the hours I was there. If you have an Xfinity account that can skate by this, Red Hook is a great place in Ferndale to get your work done.

Varun S.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop in the heart of Ferndale next to the Boston Tea Room. Super busy today, but it's because the coffee is great! I got the lavender latte for $5.50, a lil pricey but it was tasty so worth it. I'm sure it's a great place to chill and relax on the weekdays when it's not as busy! All coffee shop lovers should try this!

Cesca T.

Yelp
I really love this place. It's probably my favorite area coffee house. They have a great iced chai latte and iced matcha latte. And all of their baked goods and pastries are fresh, interesting, and delicious. They have a salted chocolate chip cookie that I get almost every time. And if they have the pistachio tea cake on offer; get it. The staff is usually incredibly friendly and personable, which is a nice change from the disaffected hipster attitude some of these places can have. There is a certain genuine warmth from the staff that I greatly appreciate. The only reason I'm not rating The Red Hook five stars is the lack of seating. I wish they could figure out a way to fit a few more tables and chairs in there, but it's an oddly shaped space. In the summer, there are extra tables outside, which helps. Especially if your pals are smokers. There is just a cool energy about this place that I dig. It has that certain something.

Katy S.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about red hook! This local coffee spot always has a huge line and there is no question why. All of their unique baked goods are to die for and I've never had a bad latte or tea. The women who is usually working the window is also the nicest. They have been super safe during covid and I can't recommend enough!

L. Z.

Yelp
It's really unfortunate... there are some solid food and drink options, yet every time I or friends have stopped in we had bad experiences due to the staff. Summed up as generally unpleasant negative interactions that don't make it worth it to stop in.

Jennifer P.

Yelp
They are so sweet here. Best chai I have found in Metro Detroit - not too sweet, little peppery and really creamy. Honestly great ownership and staff. Kind people. I always drive out of my way for this one. Today my dad was visiting and driving and he kept getting flustered. We ended up arriving 1 min past close and the woman inside took our order still. - I was having such a bad day, and going here cheered me up today and I think it calmed my dad down too.

L K.

Yelp
This place is great! They have wonderfully sourced pour over options as well as great espresso and their baked goods are addictive!

Kimberly B.

Yelp
Great place. Great food. Great atmosphere. Stopped in for carry out...looking to buy one breakfast item and ending up five, with the chocolate chip cookie and lemon tart my favorite. The savory breakfast scone and breakfast muffin, while a little dry, were terrific. I'll definitely be back.

Vildana K.

Yelp
Best cold brew coffee in the area. The carrot cake is heavenly and usually all the snacks are worth it!

Kristi W.

Yelp
For a busy Saturday, they were efficient and quick with service and our orders. The teas we got were tasty and the cake and bar were so delicious! My mom had the salted caramel chocolate cake! Yum!! I couldn't stop, and she had to away me away so she could enjoy it! I had the chai iced tea, which I forgot to ask for soy, but they were very happy to accommodate. Their cafe is clean and seating was enough for the two of us. Well done!

Nicole S.

Yelp
The Red Hook may be small but don't let it fool you, it is packed with all the good stuff you look for in a coffee shop. Brewed coffee, pour over, lattes, cold drinks, etc. The baked goods section isn't even just muffins and bagels. There's every baked good you can imagine - and many of the options are vegan! I've had countless goodies from the counter, and while somewhat expensive, they are all delicious and I've never regretted my choice. The staff is also always extremely inviting and friendly. They keep the line moving (if there is one) but still will take the time to help you make a selection if you're trying to decide or don't know what to go with. Once you have your coffee and vegan brownie you couldn't say no to, there are tables inside and also a few right outside the front door for outside seating.

Katherine E.

Yelp
Red Hook is pretty legit. The vibe is good- I miss being able to enjoy a morning coffee indoors. I would highly recommend the scones, but they seem to sell out fast. The vegan healthy "seed" cookie is amazing I'd you are looking for something on the healthier side. The only thing I'd change is the fact that they don't have many flavor syrup options.

Monica W.

Yelp
I mean, listen, coffee's great, I like their more eco-friendly straws/options, and their food is very good despite being pretty pricy. I mean customer service, the last time I was in there, not the best;not very welcoming and friendly, just a bummer being someone also in customer/service industry. Hopefully next time I go in it will be better!

Amanda N.

Yelp
Closest thing I've found to a Portland coffee shop since living in Michigan. I love that they rotate roasters (they had Stumptown and Water Ave for awhile, both of which I love). I've only had a couple of their pastries but they always look delicious. They have a few small tables and WiFi. I usually get a cold brew or an almond milk cappuccino and I'm never disappointed.

Rozalina B.

Yelp
The coffee was decent but a little overpriced. I thought it was a little bland but I'd give it another try! My vegan choc chip & coconut dessert bar was hard and dry unfortunately. However the toffee sticky bun they make here is AMAZING even if you're not a fan of toffee (and I'm not- the texture of toffee grosses me out). It's seriously so good, I had to stop myself from buying all of them to take home! If you're looking for something a little sweet I HIGHLY recommend it.

Hayley T.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. Cozy space with six or seven tables. They serve great coffee and creative cakes, tarts, cookies, and other baked goods with vegan options. I recently had a delicious iced mocha there, far better than what you'd get at a chain. They also have really satisfying biscuit sandwiches that are a good choice for breakfast.

Timothy Y.

Yelp
Everything I want from a coffee shop with exception of a barista that actually roasted the beans. Delicious coffee and pastries. I'll be back often.

Yifat C.

Yelp
Delicious coffee. The cardamom syrup is yummy. Coffee is consistently good. Also good pastries with many vegan options. Highly recommended.

Marie G.

Yelp
Yummy coffee and had vegan treat options! Currently with covid they had a great outdoor ordering system that was safe and smart.

Jack C.

Yelp
Serves Stumptown coffee. They were using Hairbender by Stumptown for the espresso blend, which generally is not my favorite. The barista I had loves coffee and knows how to pull a shot correctly, which made the Cortado taste as good as the hairbender espresso blend can get. The Red Hook and Pinwheel bakery share the same space, which makes for delicious pastry options. I tried the egg, potato and basil inside a tasty butter flaky croissant type thing. This wasn't amazing, but good. Not too much seating here, but that makes it cozy. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You should stop by.

Ciao Line ..

Yelp
I was excited to check this place out, especially as I saw it was a popular place as I walked up and there was a decent line waiting for coffee and pastries. But the staff was unpleasant to deal with so I will check out a different coffee shop next time.

Alicia S.

Yelp
I live 2 miles south of Ferndale and was looking for a coffee spot other than Starbucks to do some quiet computer work. I found this quaint Spot by searching yelp and reading some great reviews. And they did not disappoint! . I'm very particular about chai tea since I was a barista in college at a family coffee/bagel place...and by far, this place did not disappoint and had just the amount of well frothed milk. I stayed for a little over an hour enjoying a small table and the hustle and bustle. There was always a line, but never a wait! Oh! And those homemade baked goods were nearly impossible to resist.

Jeannie M.

Yelp
I love this place! The espresso drinks are interesting and superb, the baked goods are always extra delicious, the baristas are friendly, the atmosphere is fun, they have cool art on the walls. Things to know ahead of time: -seating is very limited -internet connection can be a bit spotty - they have a limited selection of gluten free items, so I wouldn't depend on it if you are gf -sometimes the line is out the door!
