Detroit’s Best Coffee Shops, Spring 2025 | Eater Detroit

"Red Hook already has locations in Ferndale, West Village, and the Detroit Greenway, and now it has a spot in Midtown inside the space formerly occupied by Great Lakes Coffee on Woodward at Alexandrine. Expect a rotating selection of roasters and baked goods featuring a wide variety of sweet and savory pastries. The space itself is sprawling. It’s a great spot to meet up with friends or colleagues." - Serena Maria Daniels

Staff here are literally never friendly or warm. Coffee is about standard, usually way too hot and not too tasty. The only thing I like about this place is the atmosphere and the vegan peanut butter bars. It’s also in a pretty convenient location if you’re over this way, but nothing I’d ever go out of my way for.

Absolutely adore this place. Talk about a classy look with a modern vibe. This place is sheik! I love the different choices, the cool process and plentiful options. Have been coming to the Ferndale location and honestly you can’t go wrong no matter which location you choose to go to. Definitely have made trips out of the way to come here and soak in the vibe for a moment. The coffee and food options are always made to perfection I have never had a bad experience here and you get what you pay for. Want great coffee served by attractive people with awesome personalities? want home made breakfast options like a hand made pop-tart? Want to eat a delicious delicate item in front of a beautiful view of midtown? Get hooked at The Red Hook, you won’t regret it.

So beautiful! Love the space and casual atmosphere. Not too busy but also not a ghost town. Coffee is tasteful. I got an oatmeal crème pie cookie. It was the best I’ve ever had. The baristas were awesome. Nothing special but did what they were supposed to do.

Matt: “I appreciate the amenities in the bathroom even though I didn’t use them. And the availability of the bathroom” Adeline: “I like the way the architectural features dispersed the sound within the cafe.” Alex: “great atmosphere and wonderfully bright. One of the best mochas I have ever had, made with authentic Michigan Guerney’s chocolate milk!! (Smaller size mocha was $6…a bit much).” Emmett: “cool music :)”

(Plant-based Reviewer) LOVE this place! Definitely my go-to coffee shop when I'm in town. I had an oat milk latte and it was not only beautiful, but delicious. The Barista's actually seem like they enjoy their job and it makes for a great atmosphere and great service. They even have multiple vegan pastries to choose from! Kudos for setting the example of what an awesome coffee shop is supposed to be!

I live in Midtown and used to really enjoy this spot when it was Great Lakes, the staff made it feel warm and welcoming, which kept me coming back. Since Red Hook took over, the vibe just hasn’t been the same I stopped by today around 2:00 PM and the barista MAN working the bar came off noticeably dismissive and more than a bit sassy. I genuinely hoped it was just an off day, but honestly, that’s not how anyone should feel walking into a coffee shop. I could make guesses as to WHY, but bottom line, no patron should feel that way, especially in a space that’s supposed to be inviting especially in your neighborhood.

Red Hook is a very solid coffee spot. Their coffee is a medium to dark roast which I like, as a regular black coffee drinker, and the baristas keep it real which I also appreciate. If you have never worked a customer service centered job you may not understand, but a barista has to deal with a lot of BS so give them a break!

Those who love decaf americsno can appreciate this red hook. I can image the other offerings are fab! Non dairy creamer options included oat milk. No treats at 400pm...a little bummed. Warm, mellow atmosphere for work and lounging. I'll return.
