Best Burgers in the East Bay | Eater SF

"If you’re looking for a solid, classic diner-style burger that’s been feeding East Bay locals for decades, the Red Onion in El Cerrito is your spot. The diner is no-frills and located just under the overhead BART tracks, but the burgers are old-school and seared on a flat-top grill until the cheese gets nice and melted on top. As a bonus, they won’t break the bank." - Dianne de Guzman

This is a small mom and pop type place. Typical hamburgers and chicken sandwich type stuff. The restaurant was absolutely immaculate. I’ve never seen one this clean. The food was really good and the onion rings were the best I’ve ever eaten. Prices were about the same as your average fast food restaurant, but the food was a much higher quality. I had a hotdog, and my friend had a cheeseburger which he loved. If you’re in the area and hungry, I would definitely check this place out.

Google
Absolute amazing burger. I had just ordered myself and my son a cheeseburger with a malt and a side of chili cheese fries. Everything was absolutely delicious. Burger was huge and loaded with fresh toppings. Cute little diner style place but it is a bit old so you may not fit in the booths. Also 2 burgers, fries, and a malt was nearly $40 which is rather steep. However the food was delicious and the employees were super nice. Yes, they take tap to pay here.

Hi there, My experience was on Monday July 28 at about noon. I ordered 2 Bacon Cheese Burgers 1 French Fry and a couple of Cokes. On one of the Cheese Burgers the Letuce was soggy as a wet rag and over loaded with Mayo, pretty gross and the French Frys were like a limp, you know what I mean.. Talk about being a little pricey, it cost me $55.00 plus a $5.00 tip. I could tell you one thing, this guy will not be going back anytime soon. I hope this helps you out with your decision weather or not to go to this establishment. Todd G.

I almost didn't go in because it looked like a hole in the wall on the outside. But I walked in and found that it is one of the cleanest restaurants I've been in for its size. They did not have gluten-free buns, but the cook made a fantastic lettuce wrapped burger. I'm really glad I went in. The food and service are all great!

Always drove past this place, wondering about it… Today I got the chance to try their food. Now I’m wondering why I didn’t sooner. Small place, great burgers and BLT. The onion rings cooked perfectly. Their peach shake was amazing. I will definitely be back.

Google
When I walked in I was immediately impressed with the cleanliness and aroma. When I tell you the burger was delicious that just does not do it justice. The juiciest most flavorful burger I've had in years. Dating back to the days of grandfather's backyard BBQ. The bun was toasted perfectly which added to the overall experience. An 11 out of 10. Will be going back soon. My compliments to the chef.

Yelp
My son and I ate here today as recent transplants to Concord looking for a good burger. I can't believe our experience! This was the CLEANEST restaurant I have ever been in. The fryers, grill, entire back kitchen area that is completely visible, sparkling clean. I couldn't believe it and neither could my son who has been a GM in restaurants. The lovely lady that helped us answered our questions happily and took.our special requests in stride. When we were done we found out she was the owner. Completely delightful lady! But I digress. I ordered a cheeseburger, well done, fries and a coke. My son ordered a double cheeseburger add avocado and extra bacon and a BLT with avocado and extra bacon and onion rings. My son and I unanimously agreed this was the best burger we have had since we can't even remember. I am picky. Very picky. This was the BEST burger I have had in years! My son was sitting at the table talking about what he is going to order the next time we go and what he thinks his dad and brother would order. I can't stress enough how good the service and food and cleanliness was here. The lovely woman that helped us is Sylvia and she turned out to be the owner. I think we are going back tomorrow that's how good it was. I rarely feel compelled to write a review but this place earned a review from me. Get a burger! You won't be sorry!

Yelp
Yesterday, the crew from Bob's Burgers decided to check out the local competition. We headed over to The Red Onion in Concord. We were welcomed by our fellow burger flippers. The burgers were delicious, and the service was terrific! The onion rings were so good, too! Seven of us really enjoyed our burgers; we were chowing down within ten minutes of ordering. This is an old-school diner with a great vibe. I'm adding this spot to my regular rotation. Let's show this hamburger joint some love! They made great burgers and took wonderful care of this crazy crew! Yelp
Yummy large burgers, fries and pineapple shake with an old school diner vibe. Great service!

Yelp
A decent spot for some diner grub, the staff is always friendly and the burger and fries are generous and fairly priced. They have some other food options but this is our go to spot for a quick local burger made to order.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was great got a great amount of fries with my cheese burger the environment is very welcoming and clean if your looking for a nice lunch this is a great option

Yelp
Good spot for a quick bite if you're in the area. The French fries were excellent and we enjoyed our burgers. Service was quick, efficient and friendly.

Yelp
FULL DISCLOSURE: Only reason this doesn't get a 5 star is because the business hours are inaccurate and not updated. Other than that the food is amazing! Essentially the place is a high quality food version of nations. Juicy burgers, big in size and amazing French fries. Very old school feel but it's comforting. Reasonably priced and overall a great place to eat.. Please fix your hours!!! *picture for reference*

Yelp
Another well deserved 5 star review update for one of my absolute favorite Bay Area burger spots! I love this place with all of my damn heart. The Red Onion is my favorite burger spot in CoCo county, period! I can talk all damn day about how delicious their burgers are, but another big reason why I've consistently come here for years is because of the excellent service. Silvia and her family are some of the kindest and most hardworking people in the game. I have so much respect for them and their business. I stopped by to pick up dinner this past week, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Silvia (the owner) working there that night. She usually works at the El Cerrito location now, so it was nice to see and chat with her. Her daughter was there too and she's always been super pleasant. They always remember me even if it's been months since I've come in. There have been times when I've come in on my cheat days when I'm dieting, and we always talk about our weight loss journeys and dieting. I feel like this family is an old friend at this point. It makes me so happy to see them when I come in. What more can I say about their burgers that I haven't already said time and time again? They're just friggin' scrumptious. Huge, meaty, juicy, and fresh. And every single damn time too. This is one of the only spots that I'd prefer over an In N Out burger. And if you're a diehard In N Out fan like myself, then you know that's really saying a lot. The consistency is just bananas. They've got it down to a science. Burgers and fries are just too damn good here. Always grateful to have this wonderful burger spot around, and I'm so glad that they didn't fall victim to COVID. And, now I've just worked myself up a craving for one of their burgers. Guess I better get up and order me one! Mmmmm :).

Yelp
Great burgers, nice family running the place. Modest, Clean atmosphere with honest food and no pretentions.

Mike M.

Yelp
Great cheeseburger and BLT. Restaurant was spotless and employees were very nice. Its a must try!!

Harry D.

Yelp
Having a flat tire repaired and was starving . I saw this place walking down the road. Nothing much to see from the outside but I was hungry so I wondered in. Wow. Place was so clean and nice inside. This place has an old school counter to eat at and watch them cook your food. Hamburger was perfect . Fries were cooked perfectly. The person serving me and cooking for me was also extremely nice. But I have to say one of the cleanest mom and pop restaurants I've ever been in. Next time I'm back in Concord I will having my burger here!

Chuck H.

Yelp
Just basic, good grub. Not too fancy, just cheeseburgers like dad used to make on the patio on Sunday afternoon. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem and is underrated. My daughter had a track meet a mile away so we stopped by this place since we didn't want to wait in long lines at In n Out. First, there was parking. Second, I was so impressed by the food! We had cheeseburgers and they were moist but cooked just right. We also ordered the chili cheese fries which were delicious. The price is decent for what you get. Ambience was average, not a fancy spot but great for kids and worth the pit stop!

Yelp
Ordered a Cheeseburger ($7.50) with bacon ($1.85) and a side of Onion Rings ($4.25) with an ice tea ($2.25). Total with tax $17.97. For a cheap eats place, kinda pricey, but the size and quality were good. I really like the amount of seasoning they put on the burger. All the toppings (head lettuce, red onion, tomatoes) were very fresh. The bun was a good size and held everything together. Also came with mustard and mayo. The bacon was crispy but not overcooked. I liked the onion rings. They were not fresh, battered and frozen but still came out good. Not greasy and enough for 2 people. On the down side, the Ranch was not that great, so ate the onion rings with ketchup. Glad I didn't pay of the Ranch. Would I come back, maybe if I'm in the area but I would not travel out of my way.

Yelp
I grew up on Red Onion Burgers and ate at the original one in Pinole. I moved and saw one in El Cerrito that was closer to home and went there several. Recently, I found this Red Onion in Concord. I swung by for lunch and got a cheeseburger and an order of fries. My buddy went for a cheeseburger and onion rings. The burger comes on a nice fresh, soft and chewy bun with a fresh not frozen hamburger patty, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, American cheese, miracle whip and mustard. It is a very fresh and tasty burger. I think they put less produce and the patty is a bit smaller than the Red a Onion in El Cerrito or Pinole but still a very good burger. The fries were hot, fresh and crunchy. Sadly the onion rings seem to have a heavier older oil taste but crunchy. Red Onion is on my go to burger list, it looks OG but it is very clean, comfortable setting and the people are very nice. If you are in Concord, stop by for a fresh tasty burger and nicely cooked fries. I'll be going again.

Yelp
The Red Onion is soo good, it's one of my top burger places. I've been coming here since I found out about it. The burgers are delicious, and they're consistent every time. The workers are friendly and they definitely put some love in the food. I get the same thing every time, a cheeseburger with bacon and a side of chili cheese fries. The actual restaurant is a clean little old-school place which is a nice experience. If you're passing through, I definitely recommend going here. And if you're a local, you're gonna love coming back

Andie S.

Yelp
I have ALWAYS LOVED THE RED ONION. This store is just great. The whole menu is delicious and interesting. A real traditional neighborhood Cafe. Makes me drool thinking if going back!!!

Yelp
Back for a lil family meal and this place hit the spot! Double cheeseburger is my got to. Feeds you for most of the day. The onion rings and fries again cooked to perfection. Fries are hot crispy and slightly fluffy on the inside. The rings are lightly crispy but with the perfect crunch and texture on the inside onions that they just melt in your mouth. Family loved the chili dog and the grilling split of the dog. Our go to burger spot. Going to try the grilled ham and cheese next.

Yelp
Thoroughly mediocre. The salmon burger we ordered arrived with a patty that seemed to contain some kind of fish but was certainly not pink (as salmon is) and had mysterious other stuff in it. Cheese on the burger was disgusting, shake was bad and didn't match our order (ordered chocolate malt, got a plain vanilla shake), fries were pretty good though. Attached picture of the ostensible salmon patty, which doesn't look or taste like salmon.
google avatar

Yelp
Good place! The food is at a fair price, it's pretty good. The meat on their cheese burgers could use some more seasoning, there's not a huge flavor profile to them. You can tell they use fresh ingredients like the lettuce, onions, etc. the service was pretty good, the staff is super friendly. It took about 10 mins to get my order 2 burgers and fries, which isn't too bad. Maybe not the best place if you are in a rush though.
google avatar

Jared W.

Yelp
Horrible. Was charged $3 for a canned soda. The chicken sandwich was under cooked and not edible. French fries were good. Overpriced and gross. The ranch was given to me in a ketchup bottle and the top came off and poured all over my food. Awful experience for a $25 lunch. Chicken sandwich, french fries and a can soda. Overpriced and gross. Will not go here again. The red onions in Richmond and el sobrante are really good. This one is disappointing for sure.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
A bit expensive but clean and fresh. We enjoyed the food. Onion rings were okay. The shakes were good.
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
The food is pretty good, better than fast food that's forsure. The only downside like others are saying is the price point. It's very expensive now and the quality hasn't changed. I can get a full meal at in n out. They do give you a lot of Frieda and the burgers are pretty good, but over $8 a cheeseburger is a lot. I also don't like how they keep the lettuce on the grill while your meat cooks with Mayo. It leave your burger with hot Mayo and wilted lettuce.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Food was awesome. Nice crispy fries, not greasy, decent flavor. Burger was a good size, loved the toasted bun, high quality fixings on the burger. Good potent fresh red onion! Hot dog was delicious plain.
google avatar

Lee C.

Yelp
Had a regular hamburger and a swiss cheeseburger with mushrooms, both with everything on them, and an order of fries (total was $18.20). The burgers were good, albeit constructed upside down with toppings underneath the meat (they're called toppings for a reason, right??). Patties could have been a bit thicker and juicier, but the flavor was good. They used a generous amount of mayonnaise which I appreciate. Also a healthy amount of red onion, which makes sense. The tomatoes were sliced abnormally thin, but it was still a tasty burger. Fries were good, a nice and chunky cut, and there were plenty of them. Overall good quality, better than a lot of burger shops, but a bit on the pricey side given nothing really stands out. I would go back anytime, but it may not become my go-to burger when I get the cravings.
google avatar

Yelp
Service - outstanding service. Super friendly, like going over to a friends house. Food - delicious burger. Good size. Definitely leaves you satisfied. The tough choice is whether to get fried or rings vs two burger. Yes my friends the struggle is real Price - reasonable. Good budget val Parking - located in strip mall there is usually ample parking

Yelp
Solid locally owned business that lives up to its name The Red Onion. We stopped by after craving burgers and wanting to try a new place. We were pleasantly surprised! Their burgers are fresh and cooked to order. Though note that they're pretty big patties. I got the double cheeseburger and wished I got the single. Comes with mayo, ketchup, lettuce, tomato and RED ONIONS. Bun is toasted but still soft. Burgers are juicy an flavorful. Onion rings were nice and crispy though fried from frozen. I'm usually more a fries person but they lacked flavor. The fries and no pickles in the burger kept it from a 5 star review. Milkshake machine was down due to COVID so I hope to try that next time. It was take out only but the interior had some vintage Coke decorations.

Yelp
I wanted to try something new and since I'm out in this area every two weeks for work I decided to try some local cuisine with my buddy. We came to this location about 40 minutes before they closed, but the lady at the counter never rushed us and made me feel very welcomed. I ordered a cheeseburger, onion rings and a coke. Unfortunately, they were out of normal buns and only had wheat buns, but it wasn't a huge deal and I'm glad the lady told us. We waited about 8 minutes to get our food and man I gotta say this was some solid food. The onion rings were delicious and were even better dipped in ranch. The burger was huge! Total amount was about $13 bucks for everything, but it was worth every dollar. I know I will definitely be back at this location soon again to try more items off the menu.

Uncle G.

Yelp
The food is on par with Nations as far as the quality of food. The staff were very nice. The downside is they are way too overpriced for everything. That alone will keep me from returning.
google avatar

Quil S.

Yelp
THIS PLACE HAS THE BEST CHEESEBURGER YOU'RE EVER GOING TO BITE INTO !! The burgers are so delicious and juicy. I discovered this place just two weeks ago and I've already been here four times. I'm not joking when I say it's the best burger I've ever had. The burger is really big I could honestly eat half and be okay but it's so good I go for the food coma, and it's worth it every time. The chili cheese fries are also the bomb definitely recommend this restaurant 10/10. I forgot to mention but you can see the cook cooking right behind the counter on the grill making your food! This place will not disappoint I PROMISE !!

Thundermice L.

Yelp
I have been here at least once a week for the last month. The onion rings are my personal favorite. perfect, not greasy, alway crunchy. I thing the best thing to go with the onion rings are the hot dog. Hamburger and French fried are good, chicken sandwich is good too.

Ty L.

Yelp
this place is amazing I tried it out for the first time and never knew this place was this good I have seen reviews on this places before saying it's overpriced but what can I say every restaurant needs to bring up the prices to stay in business. I personally really loved the food hit the spot my food came out right way and it didn't disappoint. the price for me personally wasn't bad a drift fries and a burger these days are definitely not cheap anywhere. workers are amazing and very polite. The place looks so old fashion I love it and the vibe here is wonderful amazing customers and staff. walked in and you can tell they clean this place up very nicely.
google avatar

Joe J.

Yelp
Exactly what I wanted in a burger joint! The food was no frills and soooo good. I ordered a veggie burger and I was impressed that they still have the old school ones (nothing against Impossible/Beyond, it just gets repetitive.) The onion rings stayed crispy and delicious, even after traveling home. I went into a trance and ate them all before I knew what I was doing.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Ehhh. It's ok. Kinda pricey for what they give you. The quality of the food is not what I like to see on a burger. My most recent purchase was a cheese burger, chili fries and a cookie shake. (I'm pregnant ) I just didn't do anything for me. Two American cheese slices on the semi warm chili and kinda soggy fries, burger was just ok. Meat wasn't great and bread was crappy. Shake had little flavor. I might give it another go for breakfast.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
This is my go-to place when I'm just craving a classic cheeseburger, with or w/o bacon, done just the right way. I'll drive a little farther just to get what I want rather than settling for the chain places or the overpriced ones.

K C.

Yelp
11/10 If you're looking for the best burger spot in concord, you have to try Red Onion. The people who work there are super nice and super respectful! I recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a laid back restaurant that kills other competition! This is an absolute must try for all food lovers out there!!
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
3.5 rounded up. I called ahead for a cheeseburger ($6.75), took about 15 minutes. They tried charging me $10.77, I had to speak up and tell them they were overcharging me before they corrected the mistake. Mistakes happen, not gonna mark them down for it. The burger was decent, but not mindblowing. The lettuce and onion were fresh, had a nice crunch. The bun was standard, the patty was decently thick but could use a bit more seasoning. Also it comes with mayo, and I vastly prefer some sort of burger sauce like at In-N-Out. This is the type of place I won't mind stopping by once in a while if I'm passing through, but won't go out of my way.

Kiarra R.

Yelp
After having two okay experiences, yesterday was the absolute worse. Ater ordering a simple breakfast sandwich, I get home and give half a sandwich to m nephew. He said "ew" ! After I take a bite I notice the yoke was completely busyed where there was no egg, the waiter cut my sausages and half ! Basically undersold me. Returned and requested it be made over or receive half of the money back since half the samdwhih was eaten. The woman kept starin tellin me how to cook sausage, asking me where the other sandwich is, treated me like im a homeless person trying to get over ! After I got half money back, I say thank you she says dont come back at the end of her voice. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, TERRIBLE FOOD
google avatar

Vivian P.

Yelp
Everything we've tried has been delicious. Burgers, fries, onion rings && shakes yum. Our go to spot when we're in the area forsure. Place is clean, staff is great and service is quick
google avatar

Tina E.

Yelp
OBSESSED with this place ! Love the bacon cheeseburger and fries! Sooooo good! I need to try a milkshake. Super friendly and they give you a squirt bottle of homemade ranch
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
This spot is in a questionable strip mall; however, I must say I would definitely go back. Apparently, this place is owned by the same people as the original Red Onion in the Albany/El Cerrito area. My wife says nothing has changed. The service was really good, though she was the only person working. Our burgers came out with a quickness, and the fries were super crispy. The ratio of condiments to the meat and bread, was outstanding. My burger was cooked to perfection, seasoned well and had a light crisp on the edges. I also ordered bacon, which was crispy but not over cooked. There was plenty of seating, it felt like a bit of an old-fashioned diner. I am sure upgrades can be made, but I would definitely choose the quality of food over the interior. There is plenty of parking and I believe they are open seven days a week.
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
This has got to be the worst hamburger place.. Never asked how everything was or if I would like a refill on my water. Waitress was very pleasant. When order was complete she did even deliver to me, the cook put on the counter for me to pick up. I get had better service at McDonald's. Personally I would not recommend this place. The place really doesn't even deserve 1 star. Another thing is in observance is the everything is an extra charge on the menu. Personally I don't see how they stay in business. When I arrived at lunchtime there was only one person in the place that should have been a clue.
google avatar

Matt A C.

Yelp
Cheap and cheerful burger joint in a strip mall near Costco. It looks like it could have been here 50 years without changing. The furnishings are plain and old, but I like the fact that the entire cooking area is completely open to view behind the counter. You can see that everything is clean and made from fresh ingredients. My daughter had the cheeseburger, which was great. It was made to order with cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato, mustard and lightly toasted buns. It was delicious and cost just $6.50 with fries. I ordered the chili burger. I said yes when they offered it with cheese and onion. I expected a typical hamburger with chili on top--the kind you can eat with your hands. But what I got was beef patty and the two halves of the bun laid out across the plate and then completely covered with chili con carne, with two slices of processed cheese (yuck) on top. Look at my photo to see what I'm talking about. Not only was the chili burger not what I expected, it was kinda blah. The chili tasted like it was out of a can and the whole meal was salty. It was surprisingly quiet for a Sunday lunchtime and service was fast. I would give them 3.5 stars but I'm rounding it up to 4 because the woman serving us was so friendly and eager to make sure everything was just right. I'd go again if I was nearby, but I would avoid the chili burger!
google avatar

Xavier W.

Yelp
Food was flavorless and bland. Literally not a grain of salt included. I tried to get a refund on the chili cheese fries and the girls acted like they had no clue what I was saying when I told them I didn't like the fries. Honestly wouldn't recommend it was pretty pricey for what we got.
google avatar

Yuliana G.

Yelp
I moved to my new apartment days ago and Red Onion was closest to my place and part of a small Hispanic shopping center. The customer service was excellent. I had small chocolate milkshake, ham and cheese ( everything on it) sourdough sandwich, and French fries. The sandwich was amazing, good French fries. You can ask for ranch. Certainly recommend. They have burgers and other sides. Quiet clean environment and reasonable prices.
google avatar

Trixie L.

Yelp
My first impression when entering the restaurant was how clean it was! Everything was orderly and not a spot to be seen. I ordered a cheeseburger with half onion rings and half fries with ranch and it came out to $11.45. Was very satisfied! Proportions were great, meat was juicy and flavorful, and I got a generous serving of onion rings and fries. Definitely worth the money. The ranch was great too, and free. Seems like a cool neighborhood spot with regulars, I mentioned it was my first time and they were all very enthusiastic that I would enjoy it and they were absolutely right. An underrated spot in Concord, will definitely be coming back to try everything else they offer!
google avatar

Lucy F.

Yelp
I was craving a huge, traditional cheeseburger with the fixings. I have a couple of places I usually go to but thought I would look to see what yelp had to offer. Lo and behold, I found The Red Onion. The burger made my food dreams come true, tons of grilled onions and pickles, the bread was soft, meat was well cooked. Just a plain old delicious burger. The restaurant was incredibly clean, large, well lit. The food was ready promptly and the staff was very kind. It strikes me as being a mom and pop type place and I love to support local businesses. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Kawehionapua Y.

Yelp
It's your basic hole in the whole burger joint. Not much of a menu, but the burgers are decent. Order ahead cause it's only one guy that cooks everything.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Awesome mom and pop. The dad cooks awesome burgers. Super clean. Strip mall-ish from the 60's. Love it!
