Such a shame. I have lovely memories of bringing my little one here for lunch when we lived around the corner, so I was really disappointed with how last night turned out.
Online it states the pub closes at 1am. We bought drinks at 12:53am, assuming last orders would be at 1am with a typical 20 to 30 minute drinking-up period, which is standard in most places. However at 12:55am (a couple of minutes after we’d purchased our drinks) a female bouncer came over and told us we needed to leave in 5 minutes. When I asked what time they closed, she said 12:30am. I explained we had literally just been served, and she responded that she didn’t know what time they had decided to serve until that evening, but that we needed to leave by 1am. We were then handed plastic cups for drinks we had just purchased.
At 1am another staff member came to the table and again told us we had to leave. I queried the closing time, as it still states 1am online. She said that information was wrong and shouldn’t say 1am, despite the fact they were serving drinks right up until then.
At 1:05am, while we were standing outside finishing full pints in plastic cups, I saw the female bouncer leave and get into her car. It gave the impression that everyone was being cleared out for 1am because that was when security finished, rather than allowing a reasonable drinking-up period.
We understand it would have been a long day for the team given it was a Six Nations day, and we both work in pubs ourselves, so we completely appreciate how full on those shifts can be. I would say perhaps the team need to be clearer on what time the bar actually closes, but in reality it felt like everyone knew the bar closed at 1am. The issue was that no drinking-up time was given. It came across as though people were tired and wanted to get home, so everyone was cleared out immediately rather than being allowed to finish what they had just purchased.
If I were the manager or ops manager, I would be concerned that guests are being treated this way straight after buying drinks. We all know how important value for money is, and drinking a pint on the street from a plastic cup that was bought eight minutes earlier really is not a great experience. It felt like pretty poor customer service.
There is a lot of competition for a pub that stays open past 12am, so we will simply be visiting one of those next time.
No warning at the point of purchase. No clear communication about closing times. Staff unsure of their own hours. It all felt very disorganised and poorly handled.
When responding to this review, please could you clearly confirm what time the bar closes on a Saturday and what time guests are expected to vacate the premises, so others are not caught out in the same way, and I can let my friends know.
Really disappointing.
