On the Grid : The Rex

"Jazz, history, and beer. The Rex is a spot that will never disappoint. Celebrating the power of Jazz music, The Rex might seem like a dive bar, but rather it is a bar full of history and life. Walking in the doors you immediately hear tooting and buzzing of horns and other brass instruments, paired with laughter and the joy of music lovers alike. Beer is not far from the hands of the listeners, seated at the rustic wooden tables, ears open to the powerful live music." - Jam3

My husband and I had both our wedding ceremony and reception at the Rex Theatre! It turned out phenomenally. The Rex Manager, Kiera, was extremely helpful throughout the whole process, and worked so well with all the different vendors. The space is industrial, but my wedding felt very modern and elegant after all the decor. It was a great space with a good amount of flexibility. Being able to have all the wedding events in one location made everything so much easier.

We went to see Afroman and got a VIP table. Our burgers were great, the performance was dope, but its seems like they made the bartender also wait the VIP tables which resulted in essentially not getting service after our food was served. Not the servers fault, but it seems like they are understaffed for the services they are charging for. Its not reasonable to expect one woman to serve all the VIP tables and also the bar especially when its during the main act. The website stated we would also have our own server which is not true. Overall, I would go back but probably wont spend extra money for a table with service when we arent guaranteed a server.

The night started a bit bad with someone taking our reserved table. But the service was great, and the food was very good solid 4 stars. What me and my wife were really impressed with was the music the live music was great and definitely ups this place to a 5 stars.

I am a musician, and this place is one of the best venues I have ever had the privilege of performing. Being a life long musician, I have toured nationally. One of the challenges in this endeavor is merch cuts, ticket prices, drink prices and specials. Let me tell you, the owners of this place are sensitive and compassionate, they do not take merch cuts, or do any of the other shady things you can see at other venues of this caliber. They offer a premier product at down home prices. So MD is fortunate to have such a special place in our back yard. To the musicians, stop by, support shows, say hi to the owners, buy merch, drinks, thank the bartenders. To the performers, hang out with the fans, clean up after yourselves help keep this place nice. To the owners, thank you for the devotion and stewardship of such a beautiful and historically valuable location in our community. Great food, great drinks if you are in the area, check their website for live music and prepare to be blown away at the value and quality.

Stopped in for a bite and drinks and heard they had live music. Was visiting from NJ for a Wedding the following night. What a blast we had!!! Awesome venue! We loved the 80's band The Reagan Years!!! Great place!!!

It's a pub located in the historical district of Leonardtown. There's a full bar and multiple TV's with sports playing. They keep it very dark inside. Seems like it thrives for the night life scene. The waitress was very nice and helpful. The food was a let down. The pizza had a cheese whiz sauce. Reminded me when I was a kid and would pillage the pantry for ingredients to make something. Also, the soup tasted like it came out of a can. I don't like writing bad reviews, but the food isn't deserving; not for that price.

Google
Can be kinda a gritty place on the weekend at night, but I have lots of good memories here. I’ve been here mostly for the bar which is decent rather than food. For the one time I got the food it is overpriced, but tasty. Got 2 steak birria tacos for $15. They were good, but there is pretty much no taco I would knowingly pay more than $5 for each. $7.50 per taco is ridiculous. Even in DC that would be a crazy price. Alternatively the wings are a very good price on Wednesday. Overall, still recommend the place highly for the bar/dancing experience

Google
Went Friday around noon for lunch. Not very busy. They have outside seating but chose to sit at bar. Ordered the chicken soft taco Birria with a side salad. Served in about 15 minutes after order. Plate presentation was nice and dipping sauce was mild heat. Overall nice lunch. Tea was served in a Mason jar. Overall good food and small town atmosphere. Short walk/drive to leanordtown wharf if you want to relax near the Potomac as your food settles.

Yelp
Great for music and hanging out for a few drinks and bar snacks. Nothing fancy but the ambience is great, especially during the summer. Outdoor seating with patio lights, an outdoor bar, and two indoor bars. The food was just okay. Also, plenty of other local small shops and restaurants within walking distance. Marina is a two minute drive from the bar.

Yelp
A good bar for dinner. They have nice indoor/outdoor space, and the staff is always very friendly. Their menu is not bad, but nothing special. Never had anything outstanding, but never had anything bad either

Yelp
Great spot in Leonardtown with indoor as well as outdoor seating. Full bar and an interesting menu. Different from what I am used to at home but the food was good. Service was friendly and they had line dance lessons in the back the night we stopped by. It's a casual restaurant.

Yelp
We were visiting family up in Southern MD and they brought us to Leonardtown for some sightseeing. They suggested going to The Rex for an early dinner since it was NYE. We got there pretty early, so it wasn't super crowded yet. We were quickly seated, considering we were a party of 8. Our waiter seemed pretty busy with the tables he already had, but he did a good job of keeping up and getting us what we needed. Our table ordered a variety of things, the typical bar food like fried mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, grilled cheese, burgers and fries etc. You'll have to refer to their review for their thoughts. I will say though, I didn't hear any complaints from them. My BIL seemed to enjoy his birria tacos and my nephew said it was the best grilled cheese he's ever had! So make that of it what you will. I, on the other hand, always like to order THAT different item. I'm that person. I also haven't really eaten hand held items or things I need to bite into in awhile, due to my braces, so I chose to have the shrimp etouffee. Probably not the best choice. It wasn't bad, but I just found it to be bland, unless that is how it is supposed to be? Maybe it's the nature of the dish itself? I'll have to do some more research on it and try it again in restaurant that specializes in that type of cuisine. The positive thing was that it was a generous portion. I just feel like all it was, was shrimps with a lot of onion and peppers, pan fried in butter and a small amount of spices. The rice definitely needed some more cooking. The next day, I repurposed it. I should have made an IG reel LOL. I felt like I was doing one of those cooking challenges. You know the kind when someone brings takeout to a chef and asks them to make it into an entirely new dish? I reheated it, added more spices and added an egg! Perfect breakfast haha. Overall, everyone at the table seemed satisfied with their meals. I think I just didn't order the right thing. The side we were on was more of a bar set up, so not the best for kids, but the menu was pretty kid-friendly. They have a great patio area outside with firepits in the middle. It was raining that day and plus it's winter and too cold for me, but I can see it being a nice option for the Spring and Fall months. They also had another lounge type place that connected from the inside, so we took a peak. It was super cute in there with artwork and "The Rex" neon sign. It was super quiet in there, and maybe it was just the time, but seems like a fun place to hang and get some drinks. Give it a try when you're in Leonardtown! Stay safe, Friends!

Yelp
We came to the Rex for a music event. The layout is great with the two levels (third including the balcony); however, the tables on the main floor were reserved and if guests (who don't have a reserved table) want to sing/dance/be merry in front of the stage, you are going to stand right in front of the folks who reserved tables. The Rex doesn't have a policy against standing there to dance and sing but did say that it was possible that guests from those tables might be annoyed and approach me. I came for a concert expecting to dance and sing down in front of the stage but the crowd and layout that night wasn't what I'd consider a true concert crowd unfortunately. ‍. If you want to dance and sing, bring a big group of friends so you can all go down together vs. coming with a few friends who didn't want to dance.

Yelp
Corned beef sandwich was dry and not very tasty. Was hoping for better. Nice location and ambience but food needs work

Yelp
What a bummer. I was stoked to finally visit this place and when we did the service was such a letdown. They've got such a cool venue and there's so much opportunity, but the overall experience is unpleasant because of the poor service. Insufficient staffing and long waits for food (it's not very busy in here, at all) don't help. Poor general management leads to poor employees and an overall crappy experience for the customer, and that's what happened with us. I hate leaving negative reviews, but this one was unfortunately warranted.

Yelp
If Tommy Bahama were a balding man in his late 30's/early 40's with a sincere appreciation for John Mellencamp cover bands he'd feel right at home at Leonardtown's converted movie theater watering hole, The Rex. It's busy, it's loud with a rotation of live Boomer oriented rock probably drowning out a chorus of horrendously bad pickup lines. The food is barroom approved (burgers, wings etc.) and pleasantly average. All in all it seems like a reasonably solid place to take your Hawaiian shirt for a stroll and blow off a little steam. Four stars because every town has a place like this and you'd miss it if it were gone. Baby are you WiFi?... because I'm totally feeling a connection.

Yelp
This establishment is fraudulent! The management is a JOKE & LIARS! After a heated discussion the manager Kiera with a horrible attitude finally refunded my money for TOM PETTY TRIBUTE TICKETS $15 x2 because no one was checking or collecting tickets from anyone walking through the front door or back room. The manager knew she got caught up in fraud and tried to lie her way through my questioning in reference to why I paid for tickets while everyone else was just walking in for free! The blonde bartender in band room tried to give me an ice melted watered down drink bc she just happened to have a drink someone didn't want. Girl are you nuts I want a fresh drink not some watered down BS that been collecting dust on counter of bar within reach of guests to put anything in. The caught an attitude when I said I don't want that old watered down premade drink I want a fresh one especially since it was $11 for one tiny shot of Tito's and Red Bull. I have never had such a disgusting experience with females with no class...they don't know how to run a business and I will never come here. I will be sure to tell everyone I know about the trash of an establishment this place is a horrible bar DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Alex P.

Yelp
We stopped by on a Friday and Becca (according to other workers) ignored us, after 20 minutes of sitting and no drinks. Walked out Expressed disappointment at front door and someone said they wanted to make it right. Gave them a chance and went back in. Sat at a table ordered a drink with the gentleman "representing" the business. Waitress came to the table came asked what we wanted, told her gentlemen "representing'" business had us, only to hear we don't know him. We walked out and had 0(zero) beverages. We will never suggest or recommend this place to anyone.(not even my worst enemy) I gave this place a 1 star only because 0 is not an option.

Yelp
Food, Service was good. Boxing match was well organized. Unfortunately, there was a young guy at the bar with a credit card scanner just hanging around working him scam.

Michael A.

Yelp
The Rex is an amazing blend of a great restaurant experience with a superlative entertainment venue.

Danyelle J.

Yelp
Service is terrible. Food is terrible. Waitresses constantly mess up the orders and are rude. Spoke to management and was met with a similar attitude. When called out for their rude remarks they acted like they had no recollection. Bathrooms are dirty and not stocked with toilet paper or paper towels. staff is more focused on socializing with each other than the customers. I ordered 2 tacos for 15$. For as bland and expensive as they are the service should be better. This is not my first time having a bad experience here and this was me trying to have a better experience. I will not be going back and will definitely refrain from recommending it to Anyone else so they don't waste their time or money. If I could give 0 stars I would.

Yelp
So we thought it looked like fine dining from the outside, but when you walk in it is more of a lounge. We did discover tables on the other side after we ate. Still loved it, but limited seating. The food was so good and our waiter, Derek, was awesome. Fish tacos were on point! You're welcome James!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for atmosphere and drinks but that's about it! The menu is overpriced for what it is, somewhat confusing to read and was printed in flimsy printer paper. There isn't much on the menu anyways and keep in mind basic sides cost extra. Fries? $3 extra on an already $15+ meal. I wouldn't consider that a meal if you have to pay extra for basic sides. The BLT tacos I got were good but not worth the price. Keep in mind they didn't come with any sides either :/ Our poor waiter was extremely overworked. He had to manage the entire dining room section ALONE which was too many people for one person to handle. This made it so that he couldn't check up on us as often as a non overworked waiter or waitress could. Like I said, great place for atmosphere and drinks maybe? I didn't look at those prices but overall I wouldn't come here often and I would never get food here again.

Yelp
Although I live only about 15 to 20 minutes from this restaurant and bar, we've been reluctant to try it based on the Yelp reviews which seemed to have no middle ground. People either hate it or love it. Yesterday a group of old friends from the Navy got together for the funeral of a shipmate and decided to meet afterwards for dinner. Since most of the places in leonardtown were already booked and we knew there'd be at least six of us, the group decided to eat at the Rex. I was worried that parking might be an issue but at 6:30 p.m. there were still plenty of parking spaces on the street. The restaurant itself is in the front of an old movie theater which gives it an interesting vibe. The interior is given over mostly to a large bar, but there are at least 10 to 12 four seat high top tables. Outside on the sidewalk there were at least four tables that could seat four or five persons. There were only two or three other groups inside which may have explained why we got pretty good service. The menu is not extensive, mainly bar food. So if you're okay with burgers, sub sandwiches and pizzas you'll be fine. The bar featured a wide variety of beer on tap. Our group ordered a couple of pizzas, Philly chicken cheesesteak and two or three burgers. I ordered the breakfast Burger which was advertised as coming with sliced avocado, tomato, bacon and a fried egg. The burgers also were supposed to come with one side so I opted for fries. I asked for my burger medium and it came out mostly well done but even still it was a pretty good burger. You get a choice of ciabatta roll or pretzel bun. The fries which were advertised as hand-cut were not all that great; they actually reminded me of Burger King fries. Overall the burger was pretty good and I would order it again but I would ask for it rare and hope for medium. Our server was very friendly and efficient and appeared eager to make sure we were happy. The one drawback to the entire experience was the price, it was almost $20 for my burger and fries. Although the burger was supposed to come with one side, I was charged extra for the fries. So even though this was a pretty good burger, it wasn't worth 20 bucks. My rating scale on Yelp is three stars for restaurants to which I would return, four stars for restaurants at which I would like to be a regular, and five stars for restaurants to which I would drive out of my way. Based on this one experience the Rex is a solid 3 * for me.

Lynn B.

Yelp
We both got the double "smash" burgers (two patties each). All four patties combined were raw in the center, only cooked on the outside. I asked our waiter if this was normal and he said because they are smash burgers they can't control the doneness at which the burgers cook. Which makes sense when they are thin smash burgers. Unfortunately these weren't smashed at all, they were regular thick burgers. Super pricey and very disappointing. These weren't smash burgers so be forewarned if you order them, and definitely request they be cooked all the way through (or allow the customer to choose the doneness of the burger if they are going to be regular thick patties)!

Yelp
We took the day off and decided to explore some St. Mary's County. After a long hike at Calvert Cliffs, and a visit to Point Lookout, we headed north and found ourselves in Leonardtown ready for dinner. We tried to go to the Olde Town Pub but at 4pm there was already a line to get in. So we went around the corner and saw The Rex. Outdoor patio seating, not crowded. We were super hungry and ready to go. Husband had the reuben and onion rings, and I got the chicken cheesesteak which was incredibly tasty. We enjoyed a few beers and even stayed for dessert for key lime cheesecake. My only wish would be that there would be more local/regional beers on tap. Virginia, MD, and DC have tons of fantastic breweries. I head out to eat to enjoy not just the food but some local brews near the town. There was only one beer that was near local (Calvert Brewing). So that would be the thing that would up the game here for me. You also know the place is good when the locals are there. We saw tons of people chatting, people from the bank came over after work, people walking their dogs stopping and sitting in the patio. This says a lot. We had absolutely no problem getting attention from a server, or having our orders taken, or having plates cleared. So overall this was a great experience. Glad to have found them!

Yelp
Sunday March 20th arrived just before opening. Seated and offered drinks which arrived fast enough. Ordered off the Brunch menu. Friend's daughter requested a "special order" frittata. Apparently the frittatas are all made ahead of time so when the manager/owner asked how we were doing 40 minutes later, he explained our order was taking longer because she asked for something to be omitted from her eggs. (I checked other tables and saw no food had been delivered to any table though nearly an hour had passed since they had opened.). He offered a very generous pour of a complimentary Mimosa for the long wait; nice touch. When the food arrived, the Hollandaise sauce and hash browns were refrigerator cold, and that's never good. The pre-made frittata was very small. It's just scrambled eggs with meat and cheese; do they really need to be pre-made? We ate it without saying much because we were hungry and wanted something. I've eaten here in the past several times and had excellent burgers and fries and great beer choices. Today was disappointing to see the difference. I'll try again some other time, but will not go at opening.

Dee P.

Yelp
The was horrible an they make you wait entirely to long . the steak and cheese had to much oil .. then there was a employee walking around named Ericka she was loud and rude to other customers looking for a table .. I don't not recommend this place es if you have kids

Yelp
We had a variety of food. All of it was good! Folks liked the lamb lollipops! Ends up costing a little bit to fill up unless you get a burger. Enjoy!

Yelp
Enjoyed the cold brew... Ordered the Mayweather fries. Quite tasty not worth fighting over but quite tasty. On tap beer was cold and refreshing, wait staff attentive and friendly. Thanks

Yelp
Best bar in St. Mary's! Great drinks and they added some delicious veg options to the menu!

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Showed up for dinner and the available tables were all reserved for 45 minutes later. I'm boycotting The Rex. Not a fan of their dismissal of customers that showed up ready to patronize The Rex over potential customers reserving tables an hour or more into the future. Upgraded to 4 stars on July 18. Was contacted by owner and given sincere apology and update on their business practice and policies and have been invited to return for another visit and chance to experience how good their service can be. Will update again soon.

Yelp
This was our first time here and we were a little confused at the set up at first, but the staff were pleasant and helpful getting us seated. We were first met by Chef Shamal who was just arriving on shift. This man has an awesome personality and energy about him and can tell he's passionate about cooking. He sat with us a minute after finding out it was our first time here and asked if we had any food allergies (huge props to him for thinking of that) and then asked what foods we liked. Shortly after he came out with an appetizer for us to try that wasn't on the menu of crab imperial wrapped with a slice of flank steak, on a palate of cooked kale, carrots and something else I can't remember, and a balsamic reduction. OMG that was amazing! Seriously, if the managers see this, y'all need to put that on the menu sometime, even if it's just a special. My man has got some talent in the kitchen! Our server Molly was awesome as well. She was on top of everything, bringing refills for our drinks before we needed to ask, but also not so early that they sat getting warm while we finished the first one. Both my wife and I had the Fenwick Reuben with house made chips. Again, awesome food, and a little bit of the blue cheese mousse goes a long way, so don't load a chip with it. My wife doesn't really like spicy food, so she asked for the dressing on the side (it's a Sriracha-1000 island blend). It really didn't have any bite to it, so if you are worried about spicy, I think you'd be safe with it as it comes, but she said her's was delicious even without the dressing. All in all, an excellent dining experience, and we'll definitely be back again!

Yelp
Food was disappointing and the bar staff was really loud and was more interested in talking to each other than paying attention to the customers. Had to really make an effort to get their attention. Need to get back to basics on customer service. Didn't see anyone that seemed like a GM. Won't go back. Next time I'll wait for a seat at Sweet Bay. Too bad.

C M.

Yelp
We've only tried it once, but really liked our food. Zucchini fries were excellent, street tacos very good (very black peppery and spicy) and my spouse had a chicken/Brie sandwich that was good. Waitstaff was good, knew every detail about the menu. Food came out really slow, especially as we were the only table. Multiple other reviews mention long wait times for food.... may not want to stop in if you're in a hurry or with small kids. I would definitely eat there again, I'm craving the zucchini fries already!

Yelp
I've given The Rex a couple of chances and am never impressed. The food is overpriced. I mean a plain burger for $10? with no sides included? Just go get a better specialty burger at another place. Also, I don't believe the food is fresh, likely microwaved, or it at least tastes like it. Also, they are open late but stop serving food at like 9. Walk two blocks down to Olde Town Pud instead, food is better and they serve it until midnight.

Megan H.

Yelp
We made an impromptu stop at The Rex and had a delightful meal. It was Trivia Night which added to the fun. The Reuben sandwich was delicious as were the tater tots. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly. It was clear that the soft tacos, hamburgers and wings were very popular. The menu options were far better than what we spotted online, which seemed to be outdated. We look forward to returning and appreciated the outdoor seating.

Yelp
The only reason I am giving "The Rex" 4 stars is because the pizza we had MOLL DYER'S WHITE PIE was very good! However, the service was truly poor! We actually had to serve ourselves by finding plates and napkins to eat the appetizer we ordered which was not hot, and got to our table only after asking twice if our appetizer and food were coming (approximately 40 minutes). I'm sure this had a lot to do with the timing of our visit which was December 31 at around 5:00pm. I think they were more concerned with preparing for their New Years Eve party starting at 9 than taking care of the current patrons visiting trying to have dinner. Sorry Rex... will not visit again simply because it's not enjoyable having your drinks run out (and your sister taking all of the glasses up to have them refilled), and food delivered 40 minutes later, not hot, then 3 min later your actual dinner arriving... It's a good thing the pizza was so good.. Shrimp Tacos... NOT SO MUCH!
google avatar

Renee H.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way to Tall Timbers, MD on a whim. Atmosphere is great, loved the outdoor seating. But we waited a long time for the food and it was at best mediocre. Not sure if they were short handed in the kitchen but we were hungry and ordered their fish tacos and make your own pizza. We were told it was the pizza that was holding up the lines. The pizza order was wrong but we didn't care we were so hungry. My fish tacos were not great. I wish they could maybe fry the shrimp and use less inside the tacos. It was like a shrimp soup wrapped inside a soft taco. Too much sauce and guac and sour cream. Would we come back? Probably not, but if we do maybe we can just enjoy some apps and drinks.

Yelp
I think this might be Southern Maryland's best burger. The back of the menu has a 'build your own' that just can't be beat. I didn't verify but the burger wasn't the typical flat and wide Sysco/US Foodservice Patty. If it was pre-made it fooled me.

Yelp
Something was in my drink - im writing this out of concern for other females in leonardtown. I had a beer which I milked then a cosmo made at the bar and brought to my table from the bartender, I did not leave my drink. Luckily I was with my husband. I dont remember leaving, my husband says I was completely incoherent, extremely confused, and I got sick and passed out. There were four dudes at the bar all night, I did not pay attention to where my drink was made or if the bartender left it unsupervised.

Yelp
Our group was in Leonardtown for their annual Earth Day Celebration. In previous years we've dined at the now closed Mexican restaurant always had good food, good service, & perfect outside seating to enjoy the celebration. Unfortunately now the only option was The Rex which I had heard mixed reviews on...we decided to give them a shot and grabbed one of their outside patio tables they had set up for the event. After about 10 minutes our waitress finally came over to take our drink orders she wasn't very friendly and you could tell she seemed irritated & annoyed. We asked for menus and she said she'd be right back with them...15 minutes later she finally showed up with them and proceeded to go through a laundry list of things they DIDN'T have...they were out of pizza, they were out of fries, they were out of ciabatta bread, they were out of ham so any sandwiches that had ham it would be substituted, blah blah blah...it was only 1:30 pm (the event started at 12:30) so I asked how in the world could they be out of so much stuff an hour in to the event??? She didn't really have a response and said she'd be back to take our orders in "a minute" because she didn't have a pen or anything to write on (I was beginning to wonder if this was literally her first day of being a waitress) Turns out she is actually the restaurant manager. WOW I can't imagine if she was this bad what the other waitresses must be like if she's the one managing, training, & leading them. I get that she was busy and probably overwhelmed at times but she just came off as rude & condescending the entire time. By this time we'd been at the restaurant roughly 30 minutes when all of the sudden this man who we all thought was homeless (he looked dirty and disheveled) came up to our table and asked how we were doing we just kind of looked at him said fine and he walked away...later on we saw him cleaning off a table and found out he is actually the owner of the restaurant. Oddly enough for how busy this place was being the ONLY restaurant open for the event he never once seemed to have any urgency. I would have never thought he owned the restaurant not only because of his appearance but he literally moved at snail speed. He never once (in the 2 1/2 hours we were there) helped to bring out food or drinks or take orders. He wiped down a table or two here and there otherwise he was just milling around outside at the event itself. It was insane...but explains why the service was horrendous and why they were out of so many items. If you are the only restaurant that will be open for a large event as this you should expect it to be busier than your typical Sunday and plan/prepare accordingly. Some of the items they were out of like French fries/potatoes, the Ciabatta bread, ham, etc... these are all items he could have drove to the store which was right down the street to replenish. It was just bizarre to see how lackadaisical he was. When we finally got our food (which no lie was 2 hours after we sat down) some of the items were very good others were downright terrible. We had an appetizer of wings w/ sauce on the side they were nice & crispy and very meaty. The blue cheese they were served with which I was told was house made was very watery but did have good flavor. The mac & cheese was a big disappointment. It had no flavor at all. It tasted like plain buttered noodles so not sure how they managed that w/ a cheese sauce. The shrimp street tacos were tasty & full of plump shrimp. Their version of the Rueben was ok, on the menu it says it's irresistibly crispy however ours was soggy. I definitely think this place has potential food wise...but based on service we'd probably never go back again. If the owner himself doesn't seem it's important to take care of the customers or have the smarts to realize helping his staff get orders placed, filled, etc... would've helped take the pressure off them and the kitchen staff...why would the staff care about that sort of thing?

Yelp
Not gonna lie, I almost didn't go to this place because I noticed it had gotten some 1-star reviews recently, but I am so glad I didn't let that change my mind, because it was awesome. It can be pretty rough finding decent places to eat in Southern MD, but my significant other was in town from Philly for the weekend and I was determined not to go to a chain restaurant. We went Friday night and actually liked it so much that we went back Saturday as well. On Friday we were served by Diana, who was enthusiastic and delightful, she gave us great food advice and strategized with us on how we should best flirt with Dylan Galvin, the attractive and talented guitarist. We did not flirt with him, ultimately, he was intimidatingly attractive, but she was such a great sport. I got a sandwich that had chicken, brie, and raspberry sauce, which was delicious, and Andy got seafood pizza, which I tried, and it was also excellent. They make their own chips and they're nice and thick and salty, I took a bunch home for later. On Saturday we were served by Victoria, who helped us settle a debate over who had a weirder nose, Owen Wilson or JJ Abrams (I won, it was JJ Abrams). I got shrimp tacos and Andy got chicken and waffles, both of which were absolutely stellar. We also got a ton more of those chips. All in all, I was 100% impressed, and will be back for sure.

Yelp
We went to the Rex for the first time for my husbands birthday. The atmosphere is pretty cool and the history makes it an interesting spot to eat. They had a live singer there which was great as well. However......the food was terrible! We ordered the fish bites and cheese fries for appetizer. Our dinner meals were shrimp tacos the Duke sandwich with Mac n cheese and two different pizzas. The pizzas were disgusting not even my 8 year old who loves pizza would eat it which is not common at all that boy eats everything!! My sandwhich the Duke was not good I took two bites and was done the Mac and cheese was not too bad but had no seasoning to bring it to life. The cheese fries were ok as long as you dip em in ranch. The only thing that was decent was the fish bites. Stick with the fried food you will be ok. One of the worst tasting meals we have had in a long time will not be returning to this restaurant unfortunately unless they get a new cook!

Yelp
The Rex has been my go to spot for great food and drinks for three years now. Every time I come through the door I'm greeted by friendly staff and happy customers.

Yelp
The Rex is where my daughter who works on PAX NAS ended up taking us for dinner after a fun filled day driving around Southern Maryland. We walked in and we're greeted immediately by a friendly and attentive staff. Our waitress, Emily, whom I found out through pleasant banter was the manager, made the experience memorable. I opted for the special and was astonished by the plethora of flavorful experiences making my mouth sing. Steak Del Monico topped with crab, accompanied by asparagus, polenta, and cheese topped waffle fries. Simply put, AWESOME! Washington Street Tacos got rave reviews from the wife and the St Mary's Stuffed Ham was well received and thoroughly consumed. Mac n Cheese with ham and pineapple??? Who comes up with this stuff? A hero according to my table, that's who! Don't miss this treasure of Southern Maryland creativity!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this restaurant, as the building is very cool, with garage type doors that open up - however the place ( especially the bathrooms) is dirty, the interior is lit by strings of lights, 27 of them were burnt out, and only 17 lit... As far as service, there was one guy working the whole room ( it wasn't terribly busy but he had 7-8 tables) so service was very slow, almost 15 minutes to get our drinks ( coke and tea) They were out of chicken, and apparently wheat bread as my sandwich came on white, the pizza was passable, but they didn't have any toppings we ordered so we settled for cheese. It took almost 30 minutes for our food to arrive, but everything was hot.

Yelp
I was a little nervous about this place after reading the yelp reviews about service. However, when I arrived, we were greeted with smiles and friendly, fast service. I greatly enjoyed my food and the experience was great. Based on conversations with friends who have been there, it is much better when it is less crowded. I hope you all have good luck here!

Yelp
I don't live in MD but I do come option to visit my friend there. Whenever I come we usually go here on Friday night or Saturday night and they always have good music, drinks and atmosphere at Rex. I love their New year's party each year with a different theme fun music. Definitely a place to visit

Yelp
After leaving the ye old Towne cafe after no food after an hour...we were greeted by prompt service...friendly bartender and we had our food within 20 minutes and it was delicious. Love this place!

Yelp
The go to place in Leonardtown. Food is creative without being over pretentious. Drinks are great, and the staff is friendly. As a local I can tell you even people who come into town for reservations at other restaurants end up here for a night cap. The restaurant is part of an old theater and has a lot of historical artifacts. To address other reviews, the seating is open, so sit where you want and someone will take care of you. If there is ever a concern grab the bartender as they are likely in charge.

Yelp
My wife and I ate here yesterday. It was my first time, and I was utterly unimpressed. For what it's worth, my wife says she's had a couple of good experiences here before. The restaurant is themed after a 1940's (?) movie theater. Old movie posters adorn the walls, and flatscreen TVs play inaudible black-and-white movies for some reason. The menu certainly looks promising, with seemingly thoughtfully-composed sandwiches. The menu proclaims, "our food is made to order using only the freshest ingredients." We ordered the Trio of Dips for an appetizer. For $9 this was underwhelming: grocery store crackers and pita bread with small amount of spinach dip, hummus, and...sriracha sour cream, maybe? The waitress never told us what that last one was. My entree was a kale salad with roasted butternut squash, beets, pecans and blue cheese. This sounds like a good combo of ingredients, but it was woefully executed. Belying the menu's claim about "only the freshest ingredients", the beets were quite obviously canned. The squash was undercooked to the point of being crunchy. My wife's cod sandwich was pretty good, though. I'm not sure what to make of this place. The ideas behind the menu seem solid, but some of the execution was disappointing.

Yelp
Surprising good pub grub everyday and great specials during the holiday seasons. I'd like to see that creativity that comes out during the holidays transform itself into weekly specials but for now I'll continue to "get my Southern Maryland on" by chowing down on the house made Stuffed Ham. If you haven't had the stuffed ham at the Rex you are missing out! The stuffed ham sandwich is killer!

Yelp
Had lunch many many months ago. It was pleasantly surprisingly absolutely fantastic. I forget what the order was. Had the Bell Wrap for lunch late Oct. The overdose of artichoke etc was like dripping, well flowing, vomit from a sandwich. An absolute prolapse of a meal. Many many Negative stars.
