We were visiting family up in Southern MD and they brought us to Leonardtown for some sightseeing. They suggested going to The Rex for an early dinner since it was NYE.
We got there pretty early, so it wasn't super crowded yet. We were quickly seated, considering we were a party of 8.
Our waiter seemed pretty busy with the tables he already had, but he did a good job of keeping up and getting us what we needed.
Our table ordered a variety of things, the typical bar food like fried mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, grilled cheese, burgers and fries etc. You'll have to refer to their review for their thoughts. I will say though, I didn't hear any complaints from them. My BIL seemed to enjoy his birria tacos and my nephew said it was the best grilled cheese he's ever had! So make that of it what you will.
I, on the other hand, always like to order THAT different item. I'm that person. I also haven't really eaten hand held items or things I need to bite into in awhile, due to my braces, so I chose to have the shrimp etouffee. Probably not the best choice. It wasn't bad, but I just found it to be bland, unless that is how it is supposed to be? Maybe it's the nature of the dish itself? I'll have to do some more research on it and try it again in restaurant that specializes in that type of cuisine. The positive thing was that it was a generous portion. I just feel like all it was, was shrimps with a lot of onion and peppers, pan fried in butter and a small amount of spices. The rice definitely needed some more cooking.
The next day, I repurposed it. I should have made an IG reel LOL. I felt like I was doing one of those cooking challenges. You know the kind when someone brings takeout to a chef and asks them to make it into an entirely new dish? I reheated it, added more spices and added an egg! Perfect breakfast haha.
Overall, everyone at the table seemed satisfied with their meals. I think I just didn't order the right thing. The side we were on was more of a bar set up, so not the best for kids, but the menu was pretty kid-friendly. They have a great patio area outside with firepits in the middle. It was raining that day and plus it's winter and too cold for me, but I can see it being a nice option for the Spring and Fall months.
They also had another lounge type place that connected from the inside, so we took a peak. It was super cute in there with artwork and "The Rex" neon sign. It was super quiet in there, and maybe it was just the time, but seems like a fun place to hang and get some drinks.
Give it a try when you're in Leonardtown!
Stay safe, Friends!
