Highlights

Paying homage to Chinatown with the classics. Enjoy Chinese food life. #getriceboxedThe Rice Box is Modern American Chinese Cuisine. Originating in Houston in 2011 The Rice Box planted its roots on a corner in The Montrose district where it has had the privilege of serving reinvented Chinese classics weekly ever since. While opening the second truck in 2013 to operate at a local University of Houston, there was a reawakening of Chinese food happening; it was the right time to open our first permanent location and bring everyone delicious, elevated American Chinese take-out classics like General Tso, Sesame, Sweet Sour and Kung Pao Chicken our way, ALL the time, in any weather, every day. Per our good friend Jack Burton, we must pay our dues. Please be our guest and let us introduce you to our take on Modern American Chinese. Let us feed you. 太好了!

"This popular eatery with the self-proclaimed 'best Chinese takeout in town' has officially opened its doors at 1111 South Shepherd Road in River Oaks. The restaurant announced its debut on Instagram over the weekend, and showed off a few dishes from the new menu, including 'legendary' cumin beef and the Rice Box’s first-ever dessert, a steamed milk bun that’s filled with sweet custard." - Amy McCarthy

Google
Rice Box is a 10 out of 10, I RECOMMEND!! From the atmosphere when you walk in, to the service, to the food; Rice Box is definitely a gem! Visiting Houston from Florida and I will definitely visit this location again before I leave and anytime I visit Houston after. Although the menu may seem "pricey" the portions are beyond what you'd expect and amazingly delicious. I ate some there and had more than enough to take home and share! There's indoor and outdoor seating and the vibe is great! I absolutely love the design of the to-go boxes, they break down into a flat plate to enjoy your food on. If you're into IPAs be sure to give the Saint Andrews a try! I've been raving about this place since I left! Keep up the great work and the amazing energy guys!

Google
This is the closest place to my work and I do not go often but it's always there and I always count on it to be good. Portions are huge and don't say you want spicy if you are weak. Spicy at Rice Box is spicy. Good crab rangun and like the egg rolls. The general chicken is my go to. They have lots of rice and noodles options

Google
I enjoyed the meal! The curry rice was soooo good. I’d recommend this over the house rice. The lo mane was a on the greasy side, but still good. Only complaint is the fortune cookie was missing a fortune.

Google
I’ve tried another location of The Rice Box but this location was my favorite. We went early when they opened & it was very quiet. We ordered the Pepper Steak, Garlic 4 Season Green beans w/beef, & 2 Wonton soups! Everything was delicious & fresh with the exception of my rice (it was kinda hard, I would probably get Lo Mein noodles next time). The location is nice with lots of natural lighting & outdoor seating, parking could be an issue depending on the time you go, the staff were very friendly & accommodating. Would definitely return & try out the different menu items they offer!

Google
Very cool little spot great for cosplayers or techwear people, really anyone who enjoys cyberpunk. I'd love to franchise it somewhere in CA. Food was great. Seemed expensive but you get 2 to 3 meals out of it so it's well worth the price tag. Plus it taste great. Come at night fir full neon experience.

Google
Rice box is the best. It seemed a bit pricey to me at first, but I realized that's because they give you huge portions. I always get 2 meals from my to-go orders here. I used to be vegetarian, and their tofu is some of the best I've ever had. I'm back to eating meat now and would recommend any of their meals.

Google
Went in for a quick lunch. I had heard of the food truck years back, and being in the area of their brick and mortar was the perfect occasion. The restaurant has a futuristic look in the inside and kind of neat. However, on my recent visit, restaurant was not particularly clean- I noticed the trash can had caked on food, and restrooms had stuff on the walls that had been there for a long time. Counter order was efficient and food delivery was quick. Food was mediocre at best. I guess I had my expectations set high - just nothing to bring me back. Not bad- just ok Chinese food.

Google
The portions here are really nice. Definitely enough food to take home for a second meal. The food came out fast and hot. I really enjoyed the fried rice because they put lots of egg in it and also bean sprouts which gave it another texture. I highly recommend the changqing wings. I can say they were close to the best wings I've ever had. Full of flavor. I really wanted to try the house teas the make but they were out of them so this is why they get a 4 star today.

Yelp
I love this location it's very instagrammable inside and outside. The food is always made to order and the cauliflower is one of my all time favorites! Food comes quick and containers are filled to the brim every time!

Laryssa O.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place- I've been wanting to try it for a long time and it obviously looks really dope from the outside. I haven't been to the rice village location but this location was extremely disappointing for a few different reasons. First of all it was absolutely FILTHY. There was trash literally all over the floors, behind the counter there were empty boxes and trash/back of house items laying everywhere and every surface I looked at was either wet or covered in crumbs. It was bad enough that I was grossed out and ordered my food to go because I wouldn't have been able to eat there. There was tons of staff working but they were just chillin on their phones chatting behind the counter - no one was making any effort to straighten or clean the floor. I got the chow fun noodles with chicken and my husband got the wings. $16 for the noodles was a little over priced in my opinion - a lot of the noodles were stuck together and the chicken was way overly salty. Honestly wouldn't go back for the price and overall experience.

Yelp
1 - Chongqing Spicy Style 2 - Eggroll, Chicken 3 - General Tso, Spicy 3 - Noodles 3 - Rice, White

Jaeana D.

Yelp
The rice box was really good! I got the chicken lo mien and it was super flavorful. The egg roll was one of the best I've tasted. My friend got the all and pepper chicken and that was good as well. Service was really fast. I can't wait to go back and get the Thai tea nitro!

Shermika H.

Yelp
The parking sucks the food was pretty bomb! I got the pepper steak and rice. Seasoned very well..... my son got the chicken fried rice. He said it tasted like how the old Timmy chans rice use to be. Really good. All meals came with an egg-roll.

Brea R.

Yelp
The food was good as usual but today it was super fresh and hot! I love rice box the food is always consistent and staff is always kind. My friend brought me here years ago and I still love coming!

Taylor C.

Yelp
Love the rice box. It's one of the few places I can get super good tofu that is nice and firm!!! Every one of their sauces pairs Greta with it! I especially like the sesame tofu or the orange tofu! The house fried rice is great but I'd recommend the yang chow fried rice as it has delicious sweet Chinese sausage in it! And lastly try the nitro lo pan it's so smooth and unlike anything I've had before! Inside and outside are both simple but decorated nicely with a big photo spot outside. Always very friendly staff and the food is great dine in or delivery!!

David C.

Yelp
I'm not gonna lie before this most recent visit, I haven't had rice box since they were just a food truck that used to come to UH during college. But dang have I been missing out. The rice box brick n mortar greatly exceeded our expectations. This space ship looking Chinese spot had quick service and HUGE portions. We ordered their general tso's chicken, sesame chicken, garlic eggplant, and beef chow fun noodles. We didn't realize each order also comes with a giant side of white rice, brown rice, fried rice, le mein noodles, or broccoli, plus an egg roll. When I tell you the portions are big, I mean we had enough food for lunch, dinner, and the next 3 meals honestly. All the food tasted fresh and was made to order. The general tso's chicken was honestly some of the best I've had in awhile. It beats your "local Chinese takeout" spot for sure. The real favorite though was their garlic eggplant. This is such an underrated dish. Even if you don't like eggplant, order this and I think it will change your mind. The chewy texture of their beef chow fun noodles is a must as well. Overall I'm upset I didn't come back to the rice box sooner. The prices are reasonable for the giant portions, the food is hot and made to order, and it all tastes great. I'll become a regular here for sure. Enjoy!

Yelp
A favorite date spot of mine! The ambiance is great, especially at night. Parking can get a bit hairy on a busy night but that's because the lot is so small. The food is usually great, but sometimes the meat can taste old/reheated. My favorite is the Chong Quing chicken which is not served at the other branches of rice box, so the River Oaks one is special. The portions are huge and filling.

Kate A.

Yelp
This place has an incredible ambiance, but the food is just alright. I appreciate them having vegan options, however, their food was unexpectedly very heavy and oily. I think this would be great hangover food or is a good option if you're looking for a classically American Chinese meal. It's still worth a try if you haven't been!

Shan S.

Yelp
Great food, plus menu is constantly growing and evolving to meet the needs of the customer. Friendly staff that takes service seriously - whether you are eating there or picking up to-go, they are ready to help. Truly a unique and an obviously personal feel to the space that shows how much the owners care about not only the food, but that they care about the overall experience as a whole.

Mina A.

Yelp
I can say that this place is great. The place is small but once you get your food it's a lot. One order can be split for two. The Orange Chicken was great, along with the street noodles. I'm definitely coming back

Jhené M.

Yelp
First timer and not a last timer lol. This place was so cool! It gave me Tokyo vibes on Houston vibes! The service was cool, not terrible but not exceptional. They we kind and respectful. The food came out after a lot 15 minutes and it was pretty tasty. You know when you're super hungry, you forget to take photos and that's what happened here. Nonetheless, I will Definitely be back. Quantity is plenty as well.. it's a good 4 servings worth.

Alexsandra N.

Yelp
Food was tasty! The dirty fried rice is one of the best around. I also had the Shrimp and pineapple entree. I got this for dinner one evening, but it fed my husband and myself and we still had left-overs for the next day. They give you a large portions. I would love to go back and eat there. Their menu and setup is very futuristic looking. There's a couple locations. I went to the one off Shepherd. Definitely a must try!

Keandra P.

Yelp
Trying this place for the first time! Ordered to go. As stated in other reviews, parking isn't great. I ordered General Tso's because of all the good reviews for it, plus the house fried rice. It comes with egg roll (nice). Got nice recommendations from the server that rung me up, he was kind and patient. I really liked the great service. Was easy to order to go, this place stays busy, lots of To- go orders. Cool vibe, lots of busy workers. Overall food was fine, I appreciate the service most of all. I liked the lo mein the best, but I'm already a fan of that, lol.

Abelita-Rose F.

Yelp
All the years in living in this area and I have never stopped. My boyfriend said he always sees it busy so he suggested to order online. Each item was exactly as described on the menu and the flavors too!!! By the time we got to the restaurant we received a text saying our order was ready. It's got social seating tables which if your social it's cool. We went at night and the neon lights gave it sort of a cool mode! But once we got our food it was amazing. The egg rolls AMAZING! Can't go wrong with the chicken or veggie. Plates are box in box containers and just aren't most veggie but actual meat!!! The tangy chili oil stuff was excellent and had a kickin' ginger hit! The Szechuan plate was super spicy so be ready for it! Thank y'all for taking my mouth on a roller coaster it was pleasant and affordable!

Shakoy B.

Yelp
This lol was a cool trendy place with excellent food . A little goes a long ways for-sure . The sweet and sour chicken was amazing their low win was incredible. I love this place

Nhi V.

Yelp
Not bad, but not good either. Definitely more Americanized and not authentic if that's what you're looking for. The chow fun was ok, but there was something off with the beef texture and seasoning, and when asked for something spicy, they give you a bottle of "chili" oil but with zero heat and zero chili. No sriracha. Since they're opened late, I can see it getting its job done of delivering something warm and hearty after an evening of drinking.

Maria E.

Yelp
Thoroughly decent Chinese food. Not the best but also very far from the worst (and I've had some pretty awful Chinese food in this area). I tried a couple items -- beef and broccoli (kudos for switching it up and using Chinese broccoli, you don't always see that), cumin beef, dumplings, fried rice, and an egg custard bun. Nothing amazing but I was pleased with the meal overall. The menu has ample options with plenty of veggie dishes (got to get those nutrients in). The portions are very generous btw. We ordered 2 main dishes (each served with rice), an order of dumplings, and 2 egg custard buns. Pigged out and seriously had enough for like 4 more meals. Easy online ordering system.

Natalie A.

Yelp
This location is very catchy. The atmosphere is cool and trendy but the food is awful. Our chicken was dry, overcooked and salty. But the staff is nice.

Nik K.

Yelp
Large amount of food, so plan accordingly, especially if ordering with kids. Cool atmosphere

S B.

Yelp
Ordered General Tso & fried rice to-go. It was good and flavorful. The restaurant is pretty and colorful. It's always packed here so if you order to-go I recommend calling beforehand.

Stephanie H.

Yelp
This place is so cool! I feel like I'm in the future when I'm here and trying to order my Kung Pao Chicken - extra spicy. :) I like the menu options with different entrees to choose from. I really loved the fried rice with my meal. The staff are so cool and nice too! I need to go back at night so I can see it with the cool lights!

Natalie S.

Yelp
This is a great spot if you're looking for some Chinese food at night. I ordered the fried rice, beef noodles, and orange chicken. The noodles and rice were my fave, and portions are very generous. The orange chicken is very orange-y, so expect a real orange flavor. If you like that hint of real orange flavor then it's definitely for you. Just don't expect Panda orange chicken! The vibe in here is cool with all the neon lights. I'd say most people order takeout and a few people were eating outside. The only downside is that the parking lot is very small. It can get tricky to find a spot so I'd suggest coming with a friend and having one person pickup. But overall I'd definitely come back.

Vanessa S.

Yelp
Such a cool place! Great for some late night Asian food!!! I had the lo mein and the portions were huge!!! Will definitely be back.

Justin T.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of Asian food. I also used to be a huge fan of The Rice Box, but my last few visits here have really struggled. It goes without saying, the parking at the River Oaks Rice Box is horrendous and has only gotten worse over time. Cars are illegally parked around all sides of the building, even at off-peak hours. Given the setup of this site, this really needs to be a to-go location only, or, The Rice Box should consider opening a Uber Eats/DoorDash kitchen elsewhere to get that traffic away from this snug site. Still, the food used to be worth the hassle. Lately, my entrees (Orange, Kung Pao) have featured large pieces of dry, dull chicken, with very light amounts of sauce. Crispiness is missing from both the vegetables and the fried meats. The egg rolls have a great fry, but the contents have little flavor. Despite these gaps, the fortune cookies do save the day with a vanilla flavor. Props to their vendor. When Rice Box is done well, the food is really, really good. I hope they get the magic back soon. Until then, I'd rather drop by the Panda.

Erin W.

Yelp
I have ordered delivery three times from The Rice Box now. I have been so excited all 3 times because the colorful packaging and fun logo gets me excited. Each time I am so let down. The first time was over a year ago. The last two were in the last 2 weeks. The first order was Chow Fun. One of my absolute favorite dishes anywhere. This was gross. It was so clumped in the box when I got it ... it was one big cube of noodles. They were not consistently cooked at all. Some were stuck together like they were never separated while cooking, other areas clumped together in the box. I had ordered extra spicy which I guess just got overlooked because there was zero spicy. It was basically mild or sweet. ... Today I got Kung Pao Shrimp. Again I ordered Extra Spicy. I guess this was interpreted as extra salty. It's also 100% not a Kung Pao sauce ... it tasted like the sauce that you get with boiled seafood in a bag that has very heavy seasoning. Kung Pao sauce is supposed to be an actual sauce ... not a soupy liquid with grainy salty spices. The food had zero actual spice/heat though. The only thing that burned my mouth was all the salt. Really really really bad and disappointing.

Patrick B.

Yelp
This location was good! The food was hot and the taste was on point. DO NOT GO TO THE HEIGHTS LOCATION. That spot sucks! I'll make the extra drive to Shepard. We got the general tso, fried rice, crab Rangoon and egg rolls. My kid loved it too.the service was on point and very fast. Loved the decor, this location is set up for indoor and outdoor seating. Easy parking.

Melisa G.

Yelp
I found a metal piece in the food while eating it.I loved eating here but i doubt i can come back after this.update the metal piece is BB gun

Aja-Monee' F.

Yelp
The chow fun Is my favorite!!!!! I love this place. It is perfect for someone who doesn't eat much meat. I love the veggie egg rolls too. Not a lot of Asian places make a good quality egg roll. The service is always great. The employees are always so sweet and considerate of your time. The vibes are so City clubby. I literally take so many photos everytime I come. THE PARKING SUCKS. The parking is so stressful always do pick up if you struggle with parking like me

Jordan W.

Yelp
The Rice Box is a decent spot for Chinese with a wide variety of options ranging from traditional to American-style to please a crowd. We placed a large delivery order for a recent family get-together, and found it to be a good option for a large group. While the meat-eaters sampled the pepper steak, general tso's chicken, sesame chicken, and Mongolian beef, we tried their number of vegetarian options, including the curried cauliflower, egg custard buns, green beans, and salt-and-pepper tofu. Everything was good, if not a bit oily, with the tofu being a standout. Interestingly, despite this spot's name, the rice was a bit strange- good but loose, and not the sticky takeout rice we all know and love. Other than that, the Rice Box is a good spot to get your takeout fix near the Medical Center.

Briana G.

Yelp
Came here with my boyfriend and a couple of friends and it was pretty good. I ordered the Mongolian Beef and my friends got the Sesame and Sweet & Sour chicken. You have the option to get white rice or fried rice, I chose white rice because I think the pairs well with the Mongolian beef. Our food came out fairly quick and the taste is why I'm giving the restaurant 5 stars. It was good, but nothing special that I have never tried before. My favorite part was the ambiance. Super chill and they had anime playing on one of the screens which I loved! Parking was not great, had to park on a side street. Wouldn't mind coming here again to try something different.

Gabby T.

Yelp
The food was so good!! It definitely wasn't what I was expecting, and it was absolutely delicious. I need to go back and soon!

Scott T.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, I really did. It had a cool 80s running man / blade runner vibe to it and the pics of the food looked pretty decent. Unfortunately that's where it stopped. The fried rice was ok, but the Chinese place down the street would have offered the same taste on a Wednesday without a 40 minute drive across town. The kung pao and the generals chicken were passable but again you could get the same from the mom and pop place. Counter service was friendly and the table serve was bud your own. As much as I'd love to give this five stars and tell you to watch a Sci-fi flick while eating it, I cannot. Got your local joint or if you are in the area hit something less niche.

Yanell R.

Yelp
If you're looking for some flavorful quick food this is the place to go! Overall, the location is small and the only seating are stools both indoors and outside. There is a small parking lot and some street parking but it is often packed. I ordered the Mongolian beef (medium spicy) with fried rice (extra $2). My meal came with an egg roll (your choice of chicken or vegetable). The food was delicious and is enough to share with another person. I definitely had leftovers for the next two days. The staff was friendly and worked quickly to ensure orders were getting out on time. I really liked the decoration/ style of the restaurant inside.

Wesley M.

Yelp
This was my first time to rice box and it was ok. Getting into and out of the parking lot is a nightmare. The lighting in vibe is super cool but too long would be kind of a strain in my opinion with all the neon. We took out so I can't say for sure. The service was ok, staff felt a little over it but it's the holidays so I don't hold that against them since they are still working. We got the pepper steak and mapo tofu. The pepper steak was a little watery with the sauce and a bit too sweet while still being kind of bland. The mapo tofu was great! Did a good job with that. The portions were very generous so I'd say worth the price.

Sharita S.

Yelp
I'd been looking for a place that does street noodles since moving away from Florida some years ago. I found this place, read their menu, and then ordered the Chow Fun Noodles and was instantly transported to the flavor I'd been craving. I can't even describe the taste, it's just good. I love the noodles, but they fill you fast after a while so I tried the Thai Garlic Chicken Wings. It wasn't what expected in terms of presentation. When I tasted them, I jumped out of my seat, put my fist over my mouth, and just stared at them. Who in the heck created this flavor combo? It's amazing! That sauce is so flavorful, that when I finished the chicken, I put the sauce in my fridge until I found something I could eat it would. It was salmon, but I digress. The rice is also very tasty. Not many places get that really great, flavorful rice but I think they did it. That nitro Thai tea is tasty. Sweet. But tasty. Still exploring their menu, but this far I'm pleased.

Yaya C.

Yelp
Great food , service was good could be better , the place is very welcoming I love the art ... loving Asian cuisine ... music was also good . They have a patio which feels so calm , especially todays weather !!! You should go and eat there I loved it .... Let me what you guys think about it as well ...

Amy G.

Yelp
Waited for ever So many Uber orders Don't ever come here in person unless you want to wait a while They should attend people that cared to come in to your restaurant Also place a bit filty so maybe not my fav anymore saddddd

Gina C.

Yelp
Chinese Take Out isn't normally my go-to but was feeling some thing different and WOW, I have now been to The Rice Box twice this week. We went on Valentine's Day before a concert and decided to sit inside. It was crazy busy with to-go orders and has been this way ever time I've come at night (I highly recommend ordering ahead of time). We ordered the Sesame Chicken and Orange Chicken with white and fried rice. I think we accidentally had the orange chicken substituted for the green beans and chicken; however, it was so good we were not upset in the slightest haha. Great place to pick up or sit at the bar/outdoor seating for a quick bite. Portions are huge - two of us were able to finish one order and side of rice.

Brittany C.

Yelp
Super cute eatery in a beautiful part of Houston. The food and service was amazing. Only thing I didn't like was they didn't have a lunch menu but I will definitely be back. It was delicious. Indoor and outdoor seating for dine-in. We sat outside. It was nice because it was covered.

Jose Alfonso S.

Yelp
Came in late Saturday night and it was only thing open! Cool setup inside with neons and bar stool chairs. Order the pepper steak w/spicy option & house rice, orange chicken w/ steam rice, and a won ton soup. Sweet Tea and st Arnold's beer to go with it. Portions are large for sharing but soup taste like broth was added to cold won tons.

Claire L.

Yelp
i couldn't help but notice how packed this place is everytime I drive by. While I do not go to places that has avg stars less than 4.5 I decided to give it a try. i'm glad i did! parking situation was a bit weird but i was to-going the food and so i just waited right out the door. walked in, cool lights and i really liked the design of the menu! fun. Julie (based on my receipt)at the front was welcoming. i went ahead and got house fried rice + shrimp and no protein lo mein. waited about 10min or so, and as i was about to go pick it up, the staff actually came to drop it off for me which i thought was a nice gesture!! when i came home, it made me smile because i can't remember the last time i ate in these small little boxes! the fried rice was pretty delicious and exactly what you would expect a fried rice would taste. and the lo mein was good too but i liked the fried rice more. it came with egg rolls (didn't know) and they were ok nothing good or bad (i personally don't like egg rolls). overall i can see myself going back here for a quick dinner for a take out or chill spot to hangout.

Kelsey W.

Yelp
First time I've been here and the service was quick and easy. I enjoyed the gyoza for a light snack

Sierra C.

Yelp
I was blown away at how good this place was! It's so hard to find good Chinese here in Texas. The portions were huge and everything we ordered was delicious! The place itself isn't very big inside so we sat outside on the patio since we had a stroller. The prices were also very reasonable. I highly recommend this place!

CiCi C.

Yelp
Pretty disoriented staff. Went to pick up a order and after asking a few times they finally admitted it was lost. After asking an employee to check on the order, they snapped at me and claimed the person I was working with before was checking on the order and that's why they never came back. Like why are you going to snap at me when I'm just asking a question because I have no idea what's going on? Remember, it costs nothing to be nice. Some of the staff is pretty respectful. But, for the most part, it's pretty disoriented and difficult dealing with them. They usually cannot handle all the pick up orders coming from everywhere. And it's pretty concerning. Hopefully it gets better.

Katya S.

Yelp
Everything I've had here is so good! They have tofu as well if you're vegetarian. I like the atmosphere, but the parking can be difficult during busy hours. Overall this place is great!

Keysha F.

Yelp
My order was the bomb dot com. I had eggplant and green beans and stem vegetable dumplings. The only problem with the food is that it it is small portion and a little pricy, but we'll worth it. Also it is always crowded and hard to park and get out of your parking spot. I talk about the concerns but I will be returning!

Carol R.

Yelp
Ordered my food Togo and it was a fairly easy experience online. The chicken egg roll was so yummy. The fried rice was also nice and tastey. I got mine with medium spice and it definitely made my nose run a little but I absolutely loved it. My one complaint is for the chicken in the fried rice. It was absolutely disgusting. They use dark meat and it was so fatty that I didn't want to eat it. It sucks because protein is extra and had I known it would be so fatty I would've gotten beef or shrimp. Other than that I thought the food was good!

Courtney Ann R.

Yelp
Everything about rice box was so cool and the food was amazing a must if you're in Houston
