"A special kind of history lives in The Rink, a Chicago cultural staple south of the city where the JB Style was created—a nod to James Brown, this approach blends local dance moves and skating. Recently, the skate rink renovated its facility to honor its 45-year history. Plan ahead, as classes that teach guests the JB Style are on offer; whenever you come, expect to find local families and groups of friends enjoying the open space and dancing the night away."

This place is amazing !! With super friendly people that work there . It gives a sense of community . It was really something that I’ve never experienced when it came to customer care !! Came in here not knowing a thing about skating and left as a pro (jokes) but left better!❤️‍🔥 I love that they give a little prayer and share gifts on Sunday ! Very loving and amazing.

Google
Great family place that keeps the original soul of Chicago Skating!! I felt like I was in Rollbounce🛼 Thank you for having the Blu and White family in the building to host our event. 💤🤘🏾🕊️💙

The people that work here are overly rude. Need a class on customer service . They need to dust and clean off their signs if they want people to see them. Also need to put signs in eye view.

No gimmicks or extraness...it's all about The Rink! Soon as you walk in a huge wooden floor is waiting for you to skate on. We had a lot of fun at Gospel Skate on Sunday afternoon. The music was great and the donations go to a local church. Definitely coming back.

User Write a heartfelt review of The Rink it was by far the greatest skating rinks I’ve ever been to from the moment me and my family walked in. The atmosphere feels like family filled with love. One of the owners was at the entrance and I was extremely impressed to see how she was in her own building and managing the facility so well. It was a true blessing to have access to a beginners corner in the rear of the building and the music was absolutely on point. Everyone was amazing and I wish we lived closer but it was a place me and my family had to stop by and show love to. We are from New Jersey and have grew up hearing great things about this spot. Definitely a community family spot and we definitely want to come back someday. If the owner ever sees this we say thank you and please follow us on IG so we can continue to stay in touch. Jpe.elite thank you for everything you do for your community.

I have skated here for 30+ years and I still get a rush of excitement everytime I go! This is heartwarming gem on the southside for me. I see some updates were made recently much needed. This is definitely a great place to go to learn how to skate!

Google
The staff are very rude and I didn’t know I couldn’t have water on the floor and he snatched it out of my hand and started being very disrespectful. I wouldn’t go here 😩

Hours of operation need to be corrected. I arrived at 930am on Saturday and the doors were locked. On google, it says they open at 900am on Saturdays. There were a few cars in the lot but I couldn't get in.

Yelp
My husband and I went last night (Thursday) adult night for the 8-12 skate. The music was good, although a bit loud making conversation difficult, but we got used to it. We hung out on the smaller rink because it was our first time on skates in a long while (15 + years). I noticed people in yellow shirts offering assistance to skaters and came across a nice and helpful trainer named Prynce. He was patient and knowledgeable and showed hubby and I the basics. The facility is nice and safe. Plenty of security present and plenty of room to skate and learn without bumping into anyone. The floors, carpets and bathrooms are all updated. We will definitely go back. Thankful to have this establishment in our neighborhood :)

Yelp
I had a terrible experience at this rink and won't be returning. The location was hard to find due to poor signage, and the parking lot entrance was through an alley, which I missed multiple times. From the moment we arrived, the staff was rude and unprofessional. The woman at the front had an aggressive attitude, and the pricing was misleading--non-skaters were charged the same as skaters, despite being advertised otherwise. Inside, seating was scarce, the rink had no railings, and the food line was long. My group struggled to find a table, and when we placed food on what appeared to be an available table, the owner aggressively told us to move it. Later on an incident occurred and I tried to get clarity, the owner basically told me to get out of his face, even though I approached him respectfully and waited for his conversation to be over, but he snaps on me-so I walked away and told my girls let's go then I let them and my friend know that I would never be back nor should our org. Even the security guard was shocked by his response. The overall lack of professionalism, poor service, and unsafe conditions made this an awful experience. I regret spending my money here and do not regret recommend this place to anyone. Zero Stars

Yelp
I like coming here! I grew up skating at different places and while at the time I was growing up it was not the safest for me according to my mom. I have since come back and it's my favorite song rinks we have left.

Yelp
I remember this being a Fun place to skate.... Being a non-skater, (but a great dancer!) that really tried so Hard to learn, my feet just could never get that together Laughing Out Loud (but I went to all the skating parties as a teen & young adult!!) So Much FUN!!

Yelp
Amazing Rink to one, be Black owned and 2, still thriving in these times. Miss Ramona was more than welcoming and hospitable while I was visiting from the West. I definitely visit this rink anytime I'm in Chi-Town and always have a good time. There's an abundance of sessions, great instructors and great skaters that are regulars making it memorable and fun. Love it- Vegas could definitely take some notes between great DJs, offerings for regulars such as punch cards, atmosphere and overall skate culture for sure. Oh yes- make sure you try one of the fresh smoothies!!! They are to die for!!! Thanks for everything... See you again soon!

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was 16, and the first place on my list whenever I fly back home. Don't let all these negative people fool you. A lot of work has gone into the place. There's a vibe you won't find anywhere else. If the bathrooms are dirty, so what? Some of y'all bathrooms at home probably look worse. The floor used to have bumps and patches in it. So what, we lived with it. It's been completely redone. You don't like the music? Go a different session, where you're sure to see a different dj. There's something for everyone here, even a practice floor for those not confident enough to step on the main floor. And trust me, the pressure isn't NEARLY as high as it was 10-15 years ago. I've seen more diverse patrons recent years, when in the past, my white mother occasionally joining me would be the only non-black person there, and didn't catch a single side eye. Also, skate lessons are offered for people of all levels, which is also something that I never saw years ago. I hope this place stands forever.

Yelp
I had fun... not familiar to the area I passed this place up twice. It's not directly off the main road but behind a building. I went for 30 and up night on Sunday. Nice crowd for the 50+. Love to see people enjoying themselves. Music was blah to me. I know we are older but everything doesn't have to be slow or old school. Also I think they take too long on backward skate slow skate and couple skate because if you came solo or cannot skate backward (which I CAN) you miss out on about an hour of skating. I bought some new skates and I needed to break them in the floor was smooth. I've been skating for years so overall I would come again it's fun and great exercise.

Yelp
This is completely garbage if you want to have good time go to Glenwood Skate rink the guy that works the front door one sec and then he's on the floor fucking wit skaters me In particular because I had my phone in hand he told there was no texting on there floor and wasn't texting I was on live trying to promote this dump trying to get my boys to come give them a try instead of driving across town to skate I really hate I spent my money in this place and the DJ plays the same songs every week there's never a chance up in music even tho there's thousands of songs to skate off of when I tell you if knew that this was like this and had read the awful comment about the rink I would have never spent my money here this place is really trash and are supposed to be new owners they need to resale to owners who are skater friendly and know this business cause they don't have a clue the rink used to be the the place to be but I really encourage you go as far away as you can won't see me here no more.

Yelp
TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. They have a sign that says it's " $8 Admissions if you have your own skates $13 with skate rental ." The lady at the counter wanted to charge us $13 per person although we only needed one skate rental for the child with us who wanted to skate and they also give you a ticket to redeem skates. I asked to speak with management and she lied and told us he wasn't there . We turned and asked security and they pointed him out walking by us. I approached management and he said that we still had to pay $13 . I responded with that's fine but you should add to your sign "general admission $13 " to prevent misinterpretation. He was very dismissive to my sister and was unwilling to hear us out although the child was crying. We left and will NOT be returning.

Amare R.

Yelp
you can't be rude with cockroaches in the nasty bathroom the owners was so rude to me yesterday because i told them i want my money back because i seen a roach in the bathroom i hope they get shut down and the old women that make the food is nasty in rude also !!!

Yelp
I used skate here a lot in high school, college in my twenties etc. I should not have stopped. I decided after all these years ans watching others do there thing online, in there kitchen, streets parking garages, any court that was free, on insta gram, facebook etc. I decided. To go this Thursday after I kept saying was going and did go. This is crazy I sat and watched then slowly con myself on to the floor like I was a beginner. Kept telling myself I got this I know how do this. By me having previous injuries not do to skating I was a little scared. Now after while it came back. Not doing the fancy stuff yet. Lol every thing perked when the jb's came on don't know what happened. Then I though to myself take yo blank home you have to work in the morning. Plus this is your first roll yo feet and legs and knees not ready for the 8- 1am run. Finally I sat down felt the pressure put my shoes in and got the hell of there. Will be back with new skate and mind set. Thank God for shower massages and Icy hot.

Yelp
The best way I can describe this place well It's like having to use a restroom and walking in, and then saying nope I'll wait till I get home! It's dirty and real dirty!!! I use to be at this place 20 yrs back and loved it. A friend of mine was in twn and we decided we wld go to The Rink. Wow couldn't believe how bad whoever's running it let it get tht bad.

Christine Y.

Yelp
I've been going here for so long I can't even remember my first time. Grown folk night is Thursday.

Yelp
Great place. Used to be a gladiator arena back when I was a kid. If you grew up in the 2000s then you know. I saw a dude get hit so hard that traffic stopped one time.

Yelp
This rink needs to call on chance the rapper or some prominent Chicago figure to fund renovations for entire rink, from the electric sockets up to the roof. It looks neat and clean on the outside but the inside is the total opposite along with the rocky parking. The skating area is very patchy as in it hasn't been waxed in a while it seems ,so definitely be careful when skating over the unwaxed sections--very dangerous. The skates are extremely outdated ; my last visit, the roller skate unscrewed , unlatched or what have you so I almost broke my neck due to riding on worn out skates. The workers are slow and do not follow their system THEY put in place. The carpets need an intensive shampoo and the lockers need to be torn down then thrown away. This is a staple in the community please get it together.

Lee-Han H.

Yelp
This place is off the chain! So What if it's ghetto! You won't find Tonya Harding here...only the real skaters go here. You gotta know some tricks on wheels or else you'll look stupid. Don't bring alot of Cash with you a $20 will do you just fine. Don't ever go alone...

Yelp
Ok, this was my first time at a roller rink for dancing, so take this as an outsider's remarks, for other curious people who would like to check things out. I went on a Friday, which seems to be the only night that the Rink is completely open to the public (other nights are for private events, or have special conditions such as age). The price was pretty cheap, $8 for entrance and only $1 for skate rentals. The rentals aren't too good though, as you would expect. I skated there for about two to three hours. The floor wan't too packed. There were a lot of good skaters showing off amazing moves. Even watching people do their stuff was pretty enjoyable for me. The music was ok. I felt like the lighting, music, and crowd could be more upbeat, but maybe that happens on other nights. But I wouldn't recommend anyone without the ability to at least skate forwards, turn, dodge people, and break, to visit this place. I'm an avid inline skater, so I could basically go with the flow (but I usually skate down hills and streets, so I knew none of these badass moves). Sometimes people zigzag and fly across the floor, so it would probably be dangerous for beginners. I think more than 90% of the skaters there brought their own skates, with only a few people like me using rentals. So you basically have a pretty experienced group. Ages ranged from little kids to middle aged people, with a lot of people in their late teens to early twenties. The place has drinks and some snacks for sale too (fries, fried chicken, burgers). The restrooms were decent. One final note, I seemed to be the only non-black person out of the near-100 people in the rink that night. People were cool with it. The DJ, however, once singled me out and said "Go, Jet Li! Or Jet Chow Li?" Whatever name he was trying to say. It was harmless, but I still felt weird being singled out in a dumb way (plus I don't think I look like Jet Li, or Jackie Chan btw).

Yelp
The patrons are very friendly but the staff, not as much. The facility is poorly lit, is in need of a good carpet shampooing, has broken lockers and uneven flooring. The beginners' teacher Derrick (unsure of spelling) is probably very knowledgeable/skilled but does not have a kind or patient demeanor. I definitely would not recommend this place for beginners' skating lessons.

Edonna L.

Yelp
Took the kids there today and we had an awesome time!!! Very inexpensive way to spend an afternoon while ensuring your kids get moving and get some exercise. Come on out and skate with us every Saturday 12:00 - 3:00pm is Family time - see you there!

LaToya W.

Yelp
The rink has been open for YEARS...so it's pretty old and run down. Their skating floor does need to be fixed because I've fallen plenty of times b.c of the lumps and bumps in it. lol They do offer skating courses during the week for adults and on the weekends for everyone. During the week, you MUST have your own skates in order to learn but you can use rentals on the weekend. They have late night sessions for those that really can jam on their skates...it's also a good way to learn some tricks by watching other people. The price is good and there's plenty of parking. This is definitely a great workout as well. Overall, it's cool for what it is.

Hillari H.

Yelp
The Rink is one of the oldest roller skating rinks that still exist on the south side (rest in peace, The Loop, East Side Wheels and Route 66). Sessions are open at various times for both youths and adults. Unfortunately, they don't have rental skates for adults, at least the last time that I checked (kids can rent, however). What would make this rink better is if they would smooth out the floor. There are some wicked bumps and dips on certain spots.

Don R.

Yelp
Great rink. They have a dynamite Thursday session I'm at now. The Sunday night session is on point too. The floor isn't quite as smooth as I'd like but it does the job.

Rosie R.

Yelp
The Rink charged $600 for 3 hours to a school (charitable organization) hosting a fundraiser. $600 for 3 hours. Enough said.

Thomas E.
