The Best Creole and Cajun Restaurants in Los Angeles

"It’s easy to find something at the LA meets New Orleans spot the Rising Sun. This restaurant specializes in daytime meals with a breakfast po’boy, a Cajun breakfast burrito, and a beignet trio with dipping sauce. Since 2022, this LA meets New Orleans settled into a cozy Arts District corner where one can grab a seat or quickly take something delicious to go." - Mona Holmes

On the Grid : Villain's Tavern

"Located on the corner of Santa Fe and Palmetto, Villain's Tavern is on it's own in terms of neighborhood ambiance. Feeling distinctly like a 19th century apothecary, Villain's decor is dark and moody. Order a drink from their menu, or ask the bartender to whip something up just for you. Bluegrass, Rockabilly and Soul music light up the indoor stage area, depending on the night of the week. Enjoy your drink (or hamburger, if it's a Sunday afternoon) outside by the fire pit under the stars." - verynice

Very lowkey spot in the Arts District. Away from most other restaurants and seems unique. You seat yourself, order on your phone, and pick up your food from the counter. The beignets were delicious! I really enjoyed my chicken sandwich as well, very juicy. Very rich and full cold brew coffee as well. My main critique of the restaurant is they add 18% gratuity to your bill automatically. I always tip 20% but I don’t feel like it’s worth tipping when I place the order myself and I have to grab it at a counter myself as well. Who am I tipping? I mean I even bussed my own table. In total, I’ll probably be back, but maybe just for the beignets and coffee to go.

Google
I really enjoyed the Nola vibes in the seating area on the side of the building. I was worried that the cajun seasoning on the tots would be spicy but it wasn't, and they were very good. I also had the chicken sliders without the hot sauce, and they were also good, but I wish they'd had more slaw on them. The Theves sweet tea was soooo good, I wish they sold it in gallon size!

Google
First time for brunch and loved it. It was a little confusing where to enter but the outdoor seating is cute! The food is amazing; we ordered the Po’boy, chicken & waffles, beignets, and sweet iced tea. The price is decent for the portions, I can’t wait to go back!

Google
Unfortunately we had a terrible experience! We arrived at 11, ordered at 11:12 and didn’t receive our food until 12:15. (Mind you, it was tater tots and a chicken sandwich) When our food came out it was ice cold. No exaggeration, not like warm, not even a spot of warmth. COLD! There was only one server, which I understand is difficult in itself, but when we asked her what the issue was (she was very sweet and accommodating by the way) she said they only had one chef at the time. Many people were stopping the waitress asking about their food and everything just seemed completely unorganized and in disarray. I saw another customer open up the cabinet himself and restock the plastic cups for water because the waitress was so busy. Another customer had to be walked to the bathroom by the waitress because she couldn’t understand simple directions. So in the time the waitress should have taken everyone their food, she couldn’t because they were so short staffed. There should be a rule of thumb if chefs and staff can’t make it into work, maybe add a sign that states that, so people can decide if they’d like to waste their time that day or not. The atmosphere was also one of the first things we noticed. NO MUSIC. Not even soft jazz, we felt like we couldn’t talk to each other because it was so quiet we felt like we were in the library. Overall, 1/10 (a 1 simply because the waitress was kind!) don’t waste your time or money.

Google
Mother's Day breakfast was delicious! The waiter was courteous and patient. The kitchen was 10 minutes away from closing to prep for the next menu, and they still cooked our food. Great waiters. Delicious breakfast sandwiches. Check out the pictures. Also, get a load of "Pickles the Clown" in the parking lot! 😄

Google
Love the chicken and waffle so much that the “eggshell” waffle is spongy soft! It’s super chill to eat at the alley, food will be delivered to your table after mobile ordering from scanning the QR code. feels like a take out with seats offered. (yes dog friendly) have to say my table was wobbling, so a bit dangerous to eat on

Google
I can’t say I liked it. I could tell the beignet’s were freshly made but the actual taste and texture was disappointing. Not sure if it was just a bad batch? Our drinks were decent enough but pretty bitter, so if you don’t like sweet coffee this might be for you. Dug the aesthetic, liked that there was more shade than I was expecting! And parking was cheap. ($5)

Google
A great place for a quick but filling brunch! Breakfast po'boy is perfection and beignets are soft and crispy. Great sitting outside on a sunny day.

Yelp
I had some down time for a performance and killed time here. It was a super cute restaurant. The actual inside is reservation only experience. It definitely made me curious and it you drink it may be a fun experience. You make an order through an app and you pick your food up at a window outside. Self serve water. They have single order sliders or a set which I totally appreciated. They also have beignets so people with late night sweet cravings, this is your spot. The slider was super delicious: fluffy bun and juicy burger Their tater tots was a little too salty for my taste but regardless it was fried crispy. A perfect place to try a little bit of everything

Yelp
We decided to dine here at about 6:45pm on 07/27/2025, for the first time, after attending The Obscure. Based on my experience, I would likely not dine here again. We sat down at one of the many outdoor tables, and we ordered via the QR Code at Table 8. The two of us shared the following: Loaded Cajun Tots. Immediately upon receiving these, we noticed that there was no sausage. I asked the person at the window before leaving, and he said "Don't worry, it's mixed in". I assure you, as I ate these --- there was none "mixed in". Cajun Catfish Sliders - This comes in a grouping of three, and these were actually pretty good. They looked like they were too well done; however, they were pretty tasty. Don't forget to ask for a side of the hot sauce. It tastes really good with these sliders. I was also taken aback by the auto 18% gratuity. It is a shame that you would add a 18% gratuity to a counter service only restaurant. You order via QR Code, and even when you are dining at one of the tables, you get a text message to go pick it up at the window. There is no "service" per se. This is the type of place, where I would likely give a 8 to 10% tip. I probably would not return again, based on my experience.

Yelp
Came here with a friend for a late Sunday brunch - the place is a bit confusing to navigate. The signage looks like it's for an entire black building but they seem to just be renting the kitchen and the outdoor patio -- so be prepared for ONLY OUTDOOR SEATING. It was very cold when we went so I wish I knew beforehand that they didn't have access to the dining room. They also only have a order counter where you walk up to order, so we were just quite confused and thrown off-guard by the entire experience. The food isn't bad - I had the Po'Boy and my friend had the Cajun Burrito, and they were both flavorful with fair portions. We also got an order of beignets to share, but they weren't my favorite - it wasn't crispy like other reviewers stated, but rather quite doughey and flavorless. Maybe we just got a bad batch? One thing to note is that they charge a mandatory 18% service fee, despite being a walk-up serviced restaurant (it looked like there was only one person managing the register, with the rest of the team as chefs). For a place that's completely self-service, I found that to be strange -- it's not like there are servers, so are they not paying their kitchen/backstaff a fair wage? All in all, the food isn't bad but not sure it was a pleasant dining experience. I don't know if I'd return given other options in the Arts District area.

Yelp
So I had done the distillery experience next-door and it's really cool is they handed all of us these different tokens to go and get beignets after so obviously had to go and do that and oh my gosh I am so glad I did because this is one of the best beignets I've ever tasted in my whole entire existence. If you watch my video, you'll hear the crunch of the beignet as I bit into it they had just made them. They were super hot but so delicious. The powdered sugar was melting on it as I ate it. It was absolutely incredible. I wish I could've brought like 500 of them back home with me because it was an experience

Yelp
This little spot is tucked away in the arts district of DTLA. It has a dark edgy NOLA vibe with its black concrete and black iron covered with ivy. There is a coveted patio on one side that has black garden tables. You order using the QE code and pick up your food at a walk up window. Someone did bring out our cocktails however. I highly recommend the signature cocktail which has their distilled liquor. My party and I shared the sliders and gumbo which were all very good.

Yelp
The customer service was amazing. They really were helpful explaining the menu and recommending very tasty meals. The chicken sandwich was great.

Yelp
The food was really good. I had the gumbo. catfish sliders and THE BEST Beignets this side of the Mississippi!!

Yelp
You can find some of the best beignets in town here! I also swear by their po'boy sandwich, soo yummy. This was my second visit here and both times were for brunch, which is on weekends only. Here's a breakdown of our orders: Po'Boy - Their andouille sauage and the remoulade sauce really make this sandwich special. The ciabatta bread is so incredibly soft as well. This sandwich is just packed with flavor and I will be coming back just to eat this again. Cajun brekkie burrito - With the same sausage as the po'boy, this item is also packed with bacon, egg, cheese, onions and bell peppers, all tied together with their creole seasoning. My friend loved hers! Chicken & waffle - This was served with a side of maple syrup and honey butter. The tots cost an extra $ and were so crispy and also seasoned with their creole salt! Beignets - The star of the show IMO. You must order these. It comes with 3 per order. I love that the outside is so crispy and powdery from the sugar while the inside is light and airy. It comes with whipped cream and a delicious strawberry compote. The only downside is they're a bit small in size Hibiscus tea - This drink is unsweetened, and there was a nice balance of it being a little tangy and bitter but still allowing the hibiscus flavor to come through. As for service, you order through a QR code at your table and apparently you're supposed to grab your food at the window, but the waitress brought everything to us anyway! The atmosphere is inviting and we enjoyed having the New Orleans jazz music in the background. There is a restroom inside. The prices are incredibly reasonable for what you get and the quality of the food. Parking is easy, as there are many non-metered spots right across. Overall, I would highly recommend~!!

Yelp
Stopped by for brunch on a Saturday and was pleasantly surprised at this super cute New Orleans style alleyway patio space in DTLA. You order with a QR code on the table and can add to your tab whenever you want without needing to get a server. You can also order to go at the window. There is one server for the patio in case you have questions. We got the breakfast burrito and breakfast po boy along with 2 coffees and the beignets to go at the end. The burrito and po boy were delicious! Huge portions and full of snappy sausage, crispy tots (in the burrito) and the po boy had a rich remoulade. The beignets were a lot sweeter and flakier than most I've had in the past which were more airy. But very good and they come with raspberry preserves. I will say our one note was that everything took a really long time to come out as did other tables from what we saw. We spent about 2 hours here total, mostly waiting. We also ordered a brunch cocktail and didn't receive it until the very end of our meal. It might have been a one off staff shortage or something. We do hope to come back again for the great food and vibes.

Yelp
Love the outdoor seating! Nice vibes! We tried the gumbo bowl, crispy chicken sandwich, crispy fries and beignet trio! Everything we got was delicious and would definitely get it again! We had dinner after our tasting at The Obscure! Highly recommended to reserve your spot there for a unique experience as there are limited seats!if you do plan to do a tasting, definitely feast up at The Rising Sun before as the drinks are strong

Yelp
Because of a limited time promotion going on, my friends and I got free beignets after leaving our liquor/spirits tasting at The Obscure Distillery. They were good for being free beignets. Not too doughy or too fried tasting either.

Yelp
Ambiance here; garden-vibe looks, self seating, quiet upon arrival, and a large parking lot; says to pay but no one on site taking payments, ok to park for the event. It's a small area where you can choose to sit where you want, nice little fires lit in between tables to provide some warmth as you wait for the event to open their doors. I could be wrong, but the menu was different last night in the evening and it was very limited compared to what I see posted here on Yelp. Upon walking in, you self-seat yourself and use a QR code to scan their menu and order through there. No staff members on site, they are just in the kitchen and you pick up your order at the window on the side street of the location. Again, limited menu items, pretty much sliders : beef, fried chicken or pulled pork. I opted for the burgers sliders; presentation was nice, nothing out of the world. Served on a plastic tray, three lined up sliders served on pretzel buns. The beef patties themselves were on the salty side, unsure if they over did it seasoning the patties, but for sure some bites were more salty than others. 3/5 I also ordered one of their spirit drinks: the "Bayou Dew" refreshing vodka drink, not too strong. 2/5 It was decent enough to hold me through the event next door. In conclusion, no I wouldn't come back.

Yelp
My bestie and I chose to visit The Rising Sun for our favorite meal of the day - brunch! It was a chill experience. Very low-key, good food, but overall, I'd give it 4 stars out of 5. Summary: Beautiful dining experience for brunch on the patio, one server mainly to deliver the food and drinks you ordered, but utensils, water, sweetener for coffee, and cold/hot teas are all self serve. It's not an issue, just a fact. The food was good, but I need a bit more of the "cajun" vibe. It was chill, but not super exciting. I'm curious as to what a dinner experience indoors is like because I went inside to use the bathroom, and it looks SO cool.  I'll revisit and revise based on that. Additional details for those of you who like a novel: It was a really pretty brunch setting,  the plants are lovely, and the setup gives garden vibes. Plus, there's enough coverage from the sun that the heat isn't oppressive. As mentioned above, the server is pretty much there during brunch to give you menus and deliver your order, and you're left to your own devices. It's very DIY, so if you're looking for a more involved experience where you're served in a different way, then I don't think this is the spot for you. The website also claims a "jazz brunch," and I don't even remember hearing music playing, so that was a bit of a letdown. Even though the setting was lovely and the food was good, I didn't get that Cajun, Creole, New Orleans vibe that I expected, but maybe my expectations were too high. Speaking of food, I felt like they added andouille sausage, some extra seasoning, and beignets and went "Yup, it's Cajun." I would've LOVED to see grits on this menu, which I know they had at one point. A Cajun inspired brunch menu without some sort of shrimp and grits option seems like a miss to me, but I'd like to go back for dinner to see if I get more of the Cajun vibe. The food we did order was very good. I got the breakfast po'boy, and my friend got the bacon egg and cheese, both with tots, iced coffee, and hibiscus lemonades. Not bad for a Sunday brunch and good if you're making last-minute plans, but expect something chill and easy. Delicious enough for 4 stars, but I'm holding onto that 5th one until I experience dinner.

Yelp
Update: This is to respond to the manager. If this is a self-serve and not a real sit-down restaurant, then don't ask for a tip. Also, this place is listed as a restaurant and not a quick fast food place. Besides that the food is basic. I gave this place a try since I was in the neighborhood. You have to order your food from a QR code. I ordered the cheeseburger without their sauce. I wanted grilled onions on my burger, but they said that they didn't do that. This place reminds me of a fast food restaurant because after we got our food, we didn't see the waiter again. They did say that we would get a text message when our food was ready, and then we had to go to the side window for our food. To our surprise, they brought the food out to us. To be honest, my burger wasn't anything special. It reminded me of a burger at Chili's. The fries were good and well seasoned. The outside seating is okay, well covered to keep the sun out of your face. Will I return to this place? I doubt it.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything about this place sucks. - mandatory 18% gratuity even though you don't interact with anyone, there's no wait staff and order through an app. They still ask you to tip more though. - beignets are supposed to be like cafe du monde. Lollll. They taste nothing like the ones at cafe du monde, the dough is raw, and they're 1/3 the size - cheap, plastic decor, plastic vines, plastic cast iron seating - the po boy is an egg and sausage sandwich. When people dump on LA, this is the kind of place they're talking about. Theron: thanks for the response. I forgot to mention that not only is your restaurant cynical trash but the food is mediocre to boot. Good luck.

Yelp
This cheeseburger was flavorful,d'lish. Will buy again. Worth the price. Soft crispy bun.

Yelp
Yum yum and yummy. Visited today for breakfast. Enjoyed the food. I wish they had waiters, but I get it. The side heater exploded near us. I'm extra! the glass shattered. No one was hurt while eating. Thank you for the quick clean.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was to die for love love the breakfast sandwiches, and the Cajun sauce is terrific. The tater tots were delicious. Service was self-serve kind of didn't expect that and it's outdoor service Beautiful building, but was not allowed in to eat. That's only for private parties. Very nice parking. I'm very nice. People will go again.
google avatar

Jamie Y.

Yelp
Decided to check this place out since it's just down the street. You order from a QR code on the table and pay on it too and they'll bring the order out to you. The chicken and waffle was pretty good, I liked the butter and syrup. The blacken shrimp po boy was small but packed with flavors. I liked the fresh greens in it too, the bread was a bit hard though. They also serve drinks here. You sit in this small outdoor area which is pretty peaceful for downtown although the table is uneven since it's set up in a parking lot.
google avatar

Yelp
Okay Let me start by saying the RASING Sun is the best food On earth I love it so much But sadly all good things change maybe for the better but in this case no. They change their tater tots and Poboys. It's now FIRES AND BURGER, yes I guess you can say it still delicious but I miss the old classic. But nonetheless The RASING Sun is very special in my heart they are good people but they should consider changing it to the old classic version also they're openings are late and they like to change there timing as well which is confusing but I love them. Also the place is very pretty I LOVE YOU RASING SUN I MISS YOU. It's 4 But a 5 in my heart only cause they switch their menu.
google avatar

Elaina B.

Yelp
Good food to follow the Obscure experience! Loved the beignets and the fries! The BBQ pulled pork was a bit dry so it was okay. I would try the regular burger next time. Service was pretty quick! There's a QR code on the table to order but you can also order through a waitress.
google avatar

Nik J.

Yelp
First off, the prices are pretty reasonable for the area. In the Arts District where you can expect your coffee to be $7, $9ish for a full cocktail is not bad! I've enjoyed everything here, the fried chicken in particular was well-seasoned. The only thing I thought was meh was the fried broccolini, the batter was a little too heavy for me so I didn't finish it. You seat yourself and can either order using the QR code at your table or try to flag someone down, but mobile order seems faster. There is also self-serve water. My only suggestion is that sometimes it can get quite sunny so would be nice to have some kind of shades when the sun is getting low and get in your eyes. Update: sounds like the shade issue has been resolved since I've last gone! Thanks Théron!
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
being from new orleans I had to stop by and taste what they got from a southern kitchen! stopped by a sunday late morning found parking in the arts district ( got lucky) strolled up to the window and ordered from our seats. there was a few solo travelers there but me and my wife had our own quiet corner in the back ambiance is great and chill not too lively is what we were looking for service is straight forward, there was the employee in the window that really does it all! Its pretty straight forward, scan the QR code pay, the food comes right on out we got the chicken sandwhich and the chicken waffle combo with the popular new orleans hickory coffee drip I'd go back and try the po boys and beignets if we're more hungry they looked delicious
google avatar

Jonna J.

Yelp
What a truly awesome little unexpected gem! The burger, the pork poutine and the adorable patio with some fun New Orleans jazz music totally worked! We came mainly to get a bite before Obscure, but we will be back just for a nice little treat! Hard to find a good poutine in LA and this place really delivers.
google avatar

Nathalie B.

Yelp
The food was decent, with a few good options to choose from. The overall experience didn't leave a lasting impression. The staff were friendly. If you're looking for a casual meal with outdoor seating, The Rising Sun could be worth a try.
google avatar

Milena R.

Yelp
Food was amazing! I didn't take pictures of all the meals we ordered but took a picture of mine. Two of us ordered TRS Breakfast Special. The whole plate tasted very good! Definitely home cooked style! Also ordered the chicken & waffles, was told it was also very very good! Lastly Breakfast Po'Boys, I was told it was also very good! The sausage, egg and the whole shabang! Overall the food in this place was amazing, would come again! Service was also great. We didn't know where to order/sit. But the waitress saw us walking around and directed us to the seating area and also took our order. Super friendly! :) The seating is outdoor, super cute little black tables! It gives garden vibes.
google avatar

Guadalupe D.

Yelp
Came back to try this place again and had a lovely experience! The new seating arrangement is nice and shady, I really appreciated being able to eat outdoors but not be burdened by the heat! The servers were very nice and attentive. The Monte Carlo and the Chicken Waffle sandwich were great too. Nice hole in the wall spot!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Rising sun is walk up or online order only, they don't have inside seating just a few outside tables by the order window, and they play music outside that places you in NOLA! The menu itself isn't extensive, just short and sweet. The Fried Chicken Po'Boy comes al la carte, but is a generous size. It was tasty. The beignets were okay, I would've enjoyed them more but the bottom of them were drowned in powdered sugar. I would recommend this place for a quick grab and go lunch

Yelp
As a man who feels like breakfast has been highly disrespected these past years ...I still respect brunch/breakfast ...with that being said This BREAKFAST PO BOY WAS HELLA GOOD this piece of art had HOTLINKS (which I put on my breakfast sandwich's as the crib so it was mando green light for me ) CHEESE was melted to a phenomenal level were I close my eyes once lol THE EGGS . Were whipped to a level that it had to be some sort of generational heritage behind it ...HELLA GOOD I forgot what type of bread it was lol But that thang was toasted so soft and buttery it melt in your mouth THIS PLACE WAS GREAT I scared to try y'all shrimp po boy I'm trying to enjoy other places in LA I'm heading back to San Francisco today and thank you for making my short trip a one to enjoy I'm coming to this place ayyetime I hit LA MUCH LOVE -the guy with the dreadlocks

Yelp
This review is strictly for the beignets - we got vouchers to get free beignets after attending The Obscure's season one event next door, and they gave each of our members a free powdered treat. They came out piping hot and were SO FRICKIN GOOD!!! The texture was unlike any other beignet i've ever had - very flaky and croissant-like. On top of the voucher, my Yelp check-in also gave us another free beignet duet so we got 5 free ones in total! So happy haha. We ate them underneath the covered patio area located to the right of their ordering window and everyone thoroughly enjoyed them.
google avatar

Cekarri N.

Yelp
Ok when you go here get the beignets! That's the main thing you need to know. We stopped here on a Sunday morning for brunch and the food was solid! The tots were great, the ruin poboy was good, the chicken was only ok but the beignets were fantastic! You order and pay from a QR code from your seat and they bring the food out to you. All the seats were outside and the tables are basically patio furniture so a little small for my 6'4 fiancé. The staff is friendly and the ambiance is fun with New Orleans jazz music playing from the speakers. Overall a good experience! I'd say give it a try!!
google avatar

Karina C.

Yelp
It's a littler weird when you first get there. A host sat us down and we were told to use the QR code. You are to order from there but can't make modifications to orders. You have to wait for someone to walk by and ask them to do so before placing your order. Once placed, you pay and then we were told to walk to a window to pick it up?! However, since they opened I'm assuming they figured they brought it out especially after tipping. Once we received our food we never saw the waitress again. As for the food, it was ok. The coleslaw on the chicken sandwich was very tangy. A little too much for my taste. The best thing were the fries and beignets lol. We also were sat outside and it was hot. No fans. Wouldn't probably come back as the menu was very small not too many options.
google avatar

Sunny S.

Yelp
Went here for breakfast! They make a fantastic breakfast Po Boy. It was really flavorful and the bread and sauce were all great. They have a patio where you can order from and eat at. We parked and the street. Good casual spot for breakfast in the arts district. The coffee was also very tasty especially the iced mocha drink.

Yelp
DTLA needs more places like The Rising Sun! They put a lot of thought into the details of their outdoor dining experience. This used to be a biker bar back in the day if my memory serves correctly, and they fully transported this downtown corner into a spooky New Orleans escape. Everything is painted black, including the plants hanging from the upper balcony. The music is bumpin' with some jazz and there were plenty of tables to choose from. I ordered the biscuit with gravy as well as a side of fried chicken and grits. The unfortunately were out of biscuits but they were able to swap for a buttermilk waffle, which was a delicious alternative. The grits were great, creamy and very cheesy. The side of fried chicken was huge and incredibly crispy. A little hard to eat with a plastic fork and knife, but I persevered. There seemed to be a little confusion on the back end, as it took a while for food to come out and we had to ask for our beignets before we left. They were delicious -- better than some of the beignets that I've had in New Orleans -- but we unfortunately never got the jam that we ordered with it. Maybe something was going on with their systems, but either way I am excited to return!

Yelp
Great Cajun food! I've been to New Orleans a couple times and this place doesn't disappoint. The beignets are crispy, moist, and fluffy and absolutely delicious. Check in and you get free beignets! The chicken and waffles were buttery, crispy, moist and delicious, and so was the fried chicken and andouille sausage po boy. Hibiscus tea also packed with flavor. Fast service, outdoor seating was pretty nice and well shaded. 5/5

Yelp
If you've never tried grits and southern comfort food, I highly recommend coming here and getting the shrimp and grits! WOWEEEE! That was scrumptious. When I first tried grits, I was in Indiana, and you should see how well they feed the service men here. It's a tough and tense environment, but man do they feed the men well, it's like a buffet line, and the food was delicious, hot, clean, and varied. When you're training for combat, you need to have energy and a full stomach to keep up. Grits and shrimp mix perfectly together, and it was delicious. This was the first time I had grits without butter and I usually like to mix it with honey. Although it's a simple dish, they cook it to perfection with the right amount of sauce and the shrimp tasted fresh and high quality. The egg was cooked perfectly with a runny yolk to complement the shrimp and grits. It was a wonderful combination of flavors. The restaurant is literally a hole in the wall, and you can either dine-in or order online. I like the quick and easy service, as well as the convenience of being able to grab and go if you like. Food was different than what I normally eat in SoCal, and I'd definitely come back again to try other things.

Yelp
Went for breakfast this morning with my bf. He had the chicory coffee and an order of the biscuit waffles and fried chicken. I didn't care for the chicory - too woody for my taste, but he has a sense memory of it as the first type of coffee he ever drank. The biscuit waffle was a unique experience - a much crispier waffle than I expected but less flaky than any biscuit I enjoy. I got the breakfast po' boy. Arguably, it's just a breakfast sandwich since it's served on ciabatta, not a baguette, but it was still tasty. We split an order of the beignets. They were the highlight of the meal - light and sweet and delicious. I enjoyed the old-timey New Orleans clarinet-centric jazz. I also appreciated the outdoor seating and on-app ordering. Less great: the biscuit waffle needed heavier-duty cutlery - my bf broke two of the plastic forks while he was eating.

Yelp
Food was really poor taste. Will not come back even if they are paying for it. There is no actual service. Coffee was burned, cocktails taste bad. Chicken sandwich tasted very bad. Wasted my time, money and ended up leaving the food and going some other place.

Yelp
Was excited to try this since it's walking distance from me, and I've been meaning to find a good brunch spot for my Sundays. I was especially excited about The Rising Sun given that I had just come back from New Orleans and wanted to get my southern style food fix. The seating set up is all outdoor and tented up. The architecture design definitely gave me some NoLa vibes. Luckily there was no wait on a Sunday for lunch ~12:30PM, and we were seated at a table closest to the sidewalk. The waiter took our order and left us to grab our own utensils and water by the wall which I thought was a bit unusual but a short walk never hurt anyone! We ordered the fried chicken po boy, the shrimp and grits, and finished with the beignets. The chicken po boy was just okay. I really liked the bread that it came in but was a a bit disappointed at the chicken, which should be the main food on the sandwich. That said, the shrimp and grits were not bad. I would give it a 4/5, and would probably make sure to order this if I were to go again. Lastly, the beignets were nowhere near Cafe du Monde, but I don't think anyone was expecting that to be the case. Regardless, they were nice and a good finish to end the meal with. On hindsight, I think I should have ordered the boozy beignets as opposed to the beignet duet. The boozy ones look really good on pictures, but I thought it'd be too much sweets (and calories) for two people. I might not have gotten my order right when I went, but if I were to go again, I think I'd go for their chicken and waffles, breakfast po boy, and boozy beignets.

Yelp
Minimal signage, it's easy to miss. outdoor seating only. everything served on disposable plates or to go. street parking. Tried the --shrimp and grits 3.5/5: shrimp was plump, the gravy was decadent enough, and the grits were not too chunky. this was alright and worth a try but I wouldn't get again --beignets 2/5: with all the reviews raving about these, I expected much better. if this is your first beignet experience, I can see why people would like them but I've had much better. these were so oily, dense, and the powdered sugar was caked on. the boozy sauce (gin and strawberry preserves) was also very sweet and didn't add anything extra to the beignets besides sweetness. I could not taste that it had gin in it. these also came in a takeout bag even though we were eating there service was very friendly though and the outdoor seating area was very aesthetic. I would try some of their other items if I happen to be in the area but I don't think the food is worth the trek to this part of town.

Yelp
On a rare Sunday brunch outing to DTLA, we hoped The Rising Sun was an apt way to start our day, but it felt like we could have skipped it for other options in the area. The vibe must surely feel different at night for dinner service. For brunch, however, the location and space is lacking...unless you enjoy looking out at an empty street lot and what looks like a tired patio space. We were half a heartbeat from walking out, but our party had already gotten water and talked to the waiter. Honestly, if you're looking for a nice vibe for brunch, Rising Sun is not the best fit. There seemed to be a decent amount of to-go orders so that may be a fine option. The food was a bit of a mixed bag. The chicken and waffles was just ok. The chicken was dry, the waffles were fine. My breakfast sandwich was actually pretty good with nice bread, fluffy egg, and sausage so I'd recommend this if you're ordering. The beignets were a bit of a letdown. This ain't Du Monde. Shrimp and grits was fine, but not particularly memorable. The waiter was great and really cool so we felt bad that we didn't have as positive an experience for brunch. Dinners might be different, but I'd look down the street for other brunch options.

Yelp
Ate here the other day. Good service! Nice people. Food was excellent. EVERYTHING was spot on. The bread on the breakfast po'boy had a little crisp/crunch. The sauce and balance of flavors in the po'boy was just right too. Got the salad with the fried chicken add on. Salad was good and the chicken also had a really good crisp. It didn't feel too greasy or anything either. The hibiscus tea was good too. The beignet were light, sweet, and also had a little light crisp to them.. haha I know I keep repeating that word, but they were all well done in their own way. You'll know what I mean when you try them. The beignet went well with the hickory coffee I got. Would def come back! Love The Rising Sun!

Yelp
Ok first thing first, we did get there at around 1:25 and they closed at 2pm on Sunday's (which we didn't know) so I'm rating it 4 stars because we felt rushed to eat the food being that they was closing . We order the shrimp & grits with the egg, cornbread pancake and the beignets. For drinks we order the iced black mint tea . I was annoyed that the beignets was put in a bag instead of a plate as we were still eating but they were still really fresh and delicious . Overall ambiance is all outdoor seating and very clean . They have fresh lemon water available . I will deff go back and I highly recommend.

Yelp
What a cool little find this place was in the arts district in dtla! I am a sucker for creole food so when I saw this place I knew I had to try it. I tried the breakfast po boy and man it was by far the best breakfast sandwiches I have ever had and it was super filling. If you're a big eater like me get a side of tatter tots and this breakfast will keep you full all day. Just when I thought i was having a pretty good breakfast me and my fiancée decided to order some beignets and wow these beignets completely blew my mind with how good they are! They were sweet had a little crunch to them and they are served with this strawberry jelly sipping sauce. These beignets are worth the trip here alone!

Yelp
First time here and came during my lunch break. There's only outdoor seating available, about 3-5 tables with chairs beside them and shade. You order yourself from a tablet by the window. Card payment via Toast seems to be the only accepted options, no cash. Once you place your order, the employee calls your name and you pick it up from the window. It was probably 10-15 minute wait, not too bad. There are napkins and free water nearby. I ordered the Breakfast Po Boy sandwich and it was delicious. $14 for it but it was big enough to be my lunch and dinner! I think this is a good price considering the portion and with inflation. I also redeemed the free Beignet Duet and they were equally amazing. Definitely recommend!
