As I've been an SPG loyalist before the Marriott merger, I never stayed at a Ritz before. Perhaps it was the consideration that Ritz is a step down from St Regis, perhaps the desire to reap more Platinum benefits, Ritz just never had a particular appeal to me. On this venture to Colorado, decided to break the tradition, cement the Marriott SPG merger and try this place out.
Part I: Arrival (4.5/5)
The first odd thing about this resort is finding it. It's either the signs don't exist on the main road or they are difficult to find, but arriving for the first time was confusing. The valet parking at $30 a night is pretty reasonable and was very efficient. There was never a line to check in through all the visits to the front desk, so they seemed to have it well under control. The lobby design is awesome, leather furniture, wood all around, fireplace and animal heads.
Part II: Marriott Platinum Premier Elite Status Recognition (3.5/5)
We were given an upgrade to the residential suite during the stay, which was a good sized suite. However, breakfast is not included even for Platinum Premier elites at Ritz Carlton hotels, which is a huge downside and the reason I simply cannot give a higher rating on status recognition. It's almost a dealbreaker for future selections of Ritz vs St Regis and Park Hyatt. The only other benefit was a voucher for two drinks at the bar, which was a nice thing of the property to do. Judging by frustrations of other loyal guests of Marriott, they are clearly trying to improve at this property and make it more attractive. A few suggestions would be: include breakfast (as SPG, Hyatt and Hilton do), remove parking fees for Platinum (as Hyatt does), provide discounts on hotel dining for Platinum (as most SPG and Hyatt properties do). It might sound over the top, but I do feel that treatment of most loyal members should be over the top, especially at 5 star hotels.
Part III: The Service (4.5/5)
The lack of personal butler at Ritz hotels makes it a little difficult to pin point when a problem happens. For example, requested housekeeping on the app, nobody showed up for 3 hours. Perhaps it's still the system glitches, so I started calling. Restaurants and bars had phenomenal service during the stay. There is even a complimentary shuttle included in the resort fee, which is a nice add.
Part IV: The SPA (4/5)
The spa facilities are included in the resort fee, thus making this resort fee very much worth it. I am not a fan of resort fees, but this one was actually worth it. One downside is that sauna temperature was barely hot on both visits, which was disappointing. Other guests were complaining as well about it. All other aspects of the spa, from the Grotto, to Lounge and Steam Room were amazing and had wonderful feel of being in a stone cave. One of the best spas I've visited with the exception of the sauna.
Part V: The Food (4/5)
The best chili i've ever had was here at the property. The bison burger was delicious. Unfortunately, breakfast selections were very disappointing at the price point, did not even bother eating and stepped out.
To sum up, this a good property. It has great trails, fresh mountain air, comfy bedding and the traditional experience of a Ritz. The design of the room was not my cup of tea due to its very traditional elements, but this is the Ritz after all and would not be fair to judge based on my taste. There are always improvement areas, but overall the folks here tried very hard and exceeded my expectations for a Ritz hotel. Thank you to the staff and the cooks that made it a memorable stay.
