The Glorious Twelfth 2019: Grouse Season in London’s Restaurants | Eater London

"A grand, old‑school establishment that champions the much‑vaunted classic grouse preparation: the bird is cursorily roasted so it remains pink and is served with game chips, peppery watercress, traditional bread sauce and a trencher of toast basted in the bird’s juices, finished with a paste made from its offal. The dish exemplifies a nose‑to‑tail, deeply traditional approach to British game—rich, ceremonial and unapologetically rooted in culinary heritage, aimed at diners who prize historic, classic preparations." - George Reynolds

I came here with my boyfriend and the doorman flat-out refused to let him in for no reason, no explanation. He just said “no.” Then he let other people in right after us without saying a word. It was humiliating and completely unacceptable. It’s 2025 and this kind of behavior shouldn’t exist anywhere. If this is the kind of people they choose to hire, I wouldn’t spend a single dollar here. Also they cops that were there was sad excuses of cops. They acted like they couldn’t do anything. Felt like I was back in a liberal start where there no freedom.

All the bartenders are super friendly and attentive, even with a large bar. I rarely have to wait for a drink or flag down a bartender to get their attention. Lots of great TVs, perfect for watching sports. Some decent table games like pool.

Google
What an Awesome place! It seems any time of the day, this is the place to enjoy your favorite cocktail or just grab an ice cold beer. We came over the weekend on Aug 30th to enjoy some collage football and it was such a good time. TVs with all the games, the sound on for the Top games of the weekend. How it should be! The girls working behind the bar were on top of it and so impressive. There was never less then a 100 people inside there it seemed these woman handle their business. It was impressive! Every drink no matter what we ordered was perfect… and we ordered all of them! True bartenders in a world of beer pourers is nice to see. They were polite, courteous and efficient. Top Notch! We will be back and look forward to more collage and pro games to enjoy here for years to come. 10/10 will recommend to everyone.

Google
I loved the good strong drinks they make, the atmosphere was clean/welcoming/and over just. The dj kept everyone vibing the entire time. It was a great experience and I love the fact they are open until 2pm and I will be going back if ever in Jacksonville Beach area.

Google
This spot was the our second stop that night and our last. It was awesome in there! Everyone was dancing it was great. No issues with no one and the DJ had a good mix that night. Wish he played some house, then again... I did arrive a little late 😎

Google
I have been going to the Ritz for 5 years and the last few, I have had the best bartenders Skye and Liv. Skye always makes sure my drinks are perfect. I love seeing them on Tuesdays!

Google
I grew up at the beach. My Mom worked there when I was a kid. That was decades ago. Now this place has changed from what it once was. Now it is hit and miss at best. Too bad they don't treat folks they way they did back in the day.

Google
I don't know anything about the food. The drinks were strong. The bartender was gorgeous, but this place had a sketch to it and we only stayed so long.

Yelp
This place is interesting, to say the least. I pop in here occasionally when I go out in Jax beach, and each experience is truly something different. The bartenders aren't the nicest of folks but they get the job done. The drinks are okay and priced decently. They sometimes have drink deals on the sign outside but the bartenders act like they've never heard of it, so don't count on the deals that they post on their signs. Music is hit or miss...sometimes they play really random throwbacks and smash mouth and other times it's super trap and I'll be twerking...sometimes they throw all of it together. Super interesting to say the least but I vibe with it the best that I can. Honestly, the only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is because their bathrooms are so nice. They are always super clean and I just really appreciate that. Most bar bathrooms have me scared that I'm going to get some sort of fungal infection from simply breathing in them. I just can't get over these bathrooms.
google avatar

Michele M.

Yelp
Brix taphouse is the sister bar to this place, so of course was nervous to step in here, but in driving by had a nice little crowd. The experience here was way better. Friendly service, nice vibe. Great place watch sport games, tons of TVs. This is strictly just a bar, no food, BUT they let you order food in an have delivered if you want.
google avatar

Amber B.

Yelp
Service is awful. We are on vacation and felt like we were unwelcome. Will not recommend to anyone

Katherine C.

Yelp
Denied my real SC ID at the bar. Ridiculous. Mikey and Sheldon are terrible and don't know the difference between a real and fake SC ID.
google avatar

Brooklyn B.

Yelp
We walk in the women's bathroom, FULL OF WOMEN and there's a male worker in there refusing to let women in the bathroom due to a mess in ONE STALL. I will never be returning eat it ritz.
google avatar

Seth N.

Yelp
Huge vibrant sports bar! Probably one of the best I've been to. Yes, they obviously had sports playing but also had good music (jukebox option), billiards, and a MASSIVE bar. The service was really good and they had great drink selections. Check it out for sure!

Lexi H.

Yelp
They didn't ID me or my 4 other friends and we all got drinks. It wasn't packed at 6pm when we stopped in but the bar was full. The place is small, they remove the big table and pool table near the window when people start coming in to make space, it was kinda inconvenient since we were using it. Letting us know the table is being moved after our game is one thing but the security guy stood there watching for 10-20 minutes waiting. They also start taking chairs from the bar when people are sitting in them. Another guy with a broken arm reached literally over me to open the window shade, he could have asked me to move or went behind me. The drinks were strong and good but I wouldn't come back, only if you knew the crowd already there. This is a clicky bar, if you're not in it then don't show up.

Darryl W.

Yelp
terrible service and one of the bouncers touched my girlfriend inappropriately. reported it to the police that was posted outside but they didn't do anything. not a safe environment for anyone that you care about.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
I wish I could give zero stars. Not only are the staff rude and just there to hook up with each other they only cater to locals. If you are not known to them they will find some reason to kick you out. I have lived in Jacksonville my entire life, but apparently if you are not a bum from the beach who thinks surfing is the same as a shower then they don't want your money. Pass and try somewhere that respects all patrons not just the ones they know.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
William A was our bartender and his drinks were very good and he was friendly. The rest of the staff wasn't that personable and one was down right rude. It is in a good location and has a lot of space.
google avatar

Brianna J.

Yelp
Don't go! Went at 1:45am, they close at 2, they Don't alow anyone in to use the bathroom or not. Threatened the police on us. Just a terrible experience
google avatar

Grant W.

Yelp
Great drinks and great prices, but was really disappointed coming the last few fridays and Savannah wasn't working as she was moved somewhere else. She was one of the most personable bartenders we had met here as it's really hit or miss with them. Josh and Ariel are also fantastic.
google avatar

Meghan A.

Yelp
Eh. Not what it used to be. I haven't been here in a while because of covid, but went out recently with a small group of friends. They do not have a mask policy for guests, once you're in the door you can take it off and walk around freely. Half the bartenders kept taking theirs off or wearing below their nose. They have all new bartenders that are all really young females who seem to care more about dancing & gossiping behind the bar than helping customers. Our first (and only) round of drinks were made by a bartender named Kayla. She was very short with us, making us feel like we were bothering her by being there. I don't know if she was just having a bad day, but we decided to leave and went to another beach bar where we got better service. I was really disappointed by this trip to the Ritz, as it used to be one of my favorite hangouts.

Brady T.

Yelp
I tried to go at 2pm on a Sunday and was denied because of my ID. I am 25 and from out of state. I was rather dumbfounded. I would give zero stars if I had the option.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
The Ritz was the check-in spot for the ugly sweater event in Jax Beach last month. This is where we dropped off our canned good donations and obtained our wristband for the event. This was my first time in the Ritz and it was super crowded. They have a couple of pool tables in the back near the restrooms which made it kind of hard to get to the restroom. We went out one door to the patio and came in another door closer to the restroom to avoid the crowd. We were offered a complimentary shot which was good. The bartender was attentive even though it was pretty crowded. And I was enjoying the beats that the DJ was droppin. I would go back here again on a quieter night.
google avatar

Caden C.

Yelp
Spent over $100 at this place tonight with a group. Bartenders were good to go. Ended up with some guy with a red beard in our face at about 1 telling my friend he had to leave. So I walked him out, we were headed elsewhere. He started screaming at the group of us, which resulted in my fiancé (straight) being called a "f**cking fa*g*t" and then the worker asked him to "throw arms like a man" right in front of the camera--difference is our group has something to lose, a bouncer doesn't, all as were headed out. The little man syndrome is unreal, I mean it's ritz lol... We're local, been here a hundred times won't be back. As everyone local says anyway, it's a place to end the night anyway--not sure why we tried to use the night there instead. Lessons learned, it's a real trash place, go elsewhere.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars, I would. I've given this place SEVERAL chances, and each time, my friends and I have been turned away. They apparently don't accept passports as a valid form of identification for people visiting out of the country. They asked my cousin where her paperwork was (how rude.) then while this was going on the "manager" denied entry to our friend who is 22 years old. Our friend was getting questioned about how old he is, where he lives, and where he was born. He has a valid FL Drivers license, was born in the USA, and answered all the questions and WAS STILL DENIED ENTRY FOR NO APPROPRIATE REASON. We are a mixed group of people however out of all of only me and my boyfriend got checked without any issues and we just so happen to have the lightest skin. Our other friend, M, is an active military member and we were going to the beach bars as a last hoorah before he gets deployed and they gave him issues as well, stating he didn't look like his Navy ID. He had a shaved head and no glasses in his photo. Once he gave them his FL Drivers license, he was able to "pass." The other 3 occasions anytime I've brought my friends they deny us in some way shape or form. From nonsensical dress code issues that aren't a problem for other patrons with the same style, or ID issues. And sadly this racist judgement it seems to be a common issue and that's a real shame it's 2019, people come and travel to the USA, and actually go back home. There is no need to deny entry for not having a drivers license when other forms of government identification has always been accepted when I've gone by myself. Real shame I'll no longer be going to the Ritz.

Yelp
38 minutes ago I would give this place zero stars if possible, it is a freaking joke. I came outside to smoke, when I came back inside the bouncer or doorman told me i could not come back in. He then proceeded to insult me, and had me talk to a manager. I had a full drink and my wife inside and the man would not let me in. The manager gave me zero to no assurance and said he had to talk to his door man. He never came back I'm out 39 dollars, from their robbery. They kick out customers who are not even an issue. I have been in the industry for over 10 years! This place is a joke, please don't go there, please don't spend your money, and don't support this bs business.

Yelp
Another stop on the Ugly Sweater Bar crawl!!! The had Craft beers at a nice price and the staff was really nice and the wait time was really short. This is where we got the evening started. We also had a few shots that went down nice and smooth. I'm a real fan of this bar and will make a better effort to patronize when at Jax Beach.
google avatar

Yelp
If the pigment of your skin is darker than the average, you need to stay away. There was a feminine male working the door that refused to let my fiancé in because he was, "intoxicated" as evidenced by him drinking a bottle of water . Wow. Wow. Wow. Can't drink water while walking the beach nowadays... mind you, this was our first beach bar-- nobody was intoxicated. No need to talk about how hurtful this was... it sucks that you can't expect anything better. 'Merica! STAY AWAY!
google avatar

Maverick S.

Yelp
The bartenders are very rude and make weak drinks. They also steal your money and kick you out if you ask for change.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
The DJ has absolutely bussin' jams, I literally did the worm ha ha! Drinks were good too, rum and coke was the goat
google avatar

Rva M.

Yelp
The bartender kicked both me and my friends out 4:30. I understand myself but profiling is not appreciated. We will not come back at any point and promote not coming here. I have had plenty of friends who come here daily(mike, Steve, etc all). Please remove these troublesome bartenders.

Tieranni C.

Yelp
Terrible drinks mediocre service. Do not recommend. Margarita tastes like.. Carmel..?

Stacia L.

Yelp
Love this bar but karaoke on football nights is not sustainable. Karaoke in general may not be sustainable. Read your audience. A few people volunteering to scream songs is not enjoyable. Paying customers are pouring out on Thursday nights. It was a good effort and afforded some fun, but now that sports are back, karaoke has got to go, or at least change to another night.

Yelp
Dude, it was raining like a muther, like it has been fer the last three months here in N Fla, I cut outa werk early, the boss was in the office makin it with a couple of the waitresses and he was gonna be in there a while, so I decided to go have a coldie at some new place I had heard of, The Ritz. Fortunately I found a parkin space close to the door, got a bit wet in the rain goin to the door, and a chic named Casey greeted me with a fresh bar towel. A nice greeting I must say. I toweled off. "Fireball up and a Bud Lt please." "Here you go sir, and here is my phone number too, I get off at 6." Well I wont go into the details, but I now do Happy Hour here at least three times a week and I can attest to the fact that all the bartenders are just as friendly as Casey. I love this place!
google avatar

Lin G.

Yelp
Quick question: where would you go to get cheap drinks at the place to be in town? Probably Ritz. I have no idea why I thought it was a Mexican place when I first pulled in. After ordering drinks, I could not believe how cheap they are, and they come in large glasses. For a second, maybe I did feel like it was Mexico. Better have a beyond legit ID because the bouncers here will study that shit like it's a coded treasure map. The guy to girl ratio is about, oh 5 to 1. But the girls tend to be better looking so maybe it'll all even out in the end. Meaning the top 20% of dudes can hope to have a real chance to not getting rejected and everyone else just go home and play Call of Duty or watch Walking Dead reruns.
google avatar

Yelp
FREE entry and you get to relive your college years. Yes, you are surrounded by them, it's like an unofficial frat party. Crowd is diverse and mainly in their low-to-mid-20's and 30's. Music is top 40, hip hop, and of course a sprinkling of the standard 3 or 4 80's songs you hear all over Jacksonville whether or not it is 80's night, including Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" (Yes, that song followed us into every single place we went to that night!) They have a little patio area where you can smoke outside and if you're lucky, grab a table to chillax. There's a bar in the middle of the place, but plenty of room to dance and it was pretty packed but you could still move your arms, so that was a plus. For the free entry, I'd definitely come back.
google avatar

Pamela L.

Yelp
Your style will determine which night is best for you at the Ritz. If you're low key and just want to have a few drinks, play some pool or corn hole, listen to live music.... Etc Then any night from Monday through Thursday (though Thursday is pushing it) is for you. There's enough people during the week where the place doesn't feel empty, there's great music (usually live around 10), big TVs if you're watching the world series... The drinks are enough and the service is great. However, if you're style is more.... Flashy girls, loud guys, annoyed bouncers, lots of people, DJ spinning the beats in a smoky, make-shift club: Then Friday and the weekend is for you. The shots are pouring, there's a dress code, everyone's having a great time mingling and dancing until they get too tipsy to carry on. Very much a younger crowd mixed with a wish-I-was-younger crowd. It's a good time, if that's your thing. I've experienced both and as a versatile lady I can appreciate both. Choose wisely for your taste, go with good company and you'll have a great time no matter what day of the week it is.
google avatar

Connie W.

Yelp
The Ritz, what can one say??? I remember it from days of old when it was run down and sad. Even after I turned 21 my parents wouldn't allow me to go there and I never did. Scary..... Now, that has all changed. It seems to be the happening place at the beach on the weekends. I tried to go on St. Patricks Night but the line was around the parking lot. FORGET IT!! I don't need green beer that bad! If you go during the week and for happy hour it is a more relaxed crowd, easy to get an inexpensive drink and nice to us older folks who will be gone shortly anyway cause we get up and go to work the next morning. The happy hour prices are amazing and I am surprised they don't bring in more business. Maybe I was just there on the wrong (or right!) day. The have completely remodeled it from days of yore and the woodwork is beautiful. I am so happy to see a Beaches Icon come back into grand style.

Bharat A.

Yelp
Not the place for tourist. I waited in the queue for 30 minutes and then the guy at the entrance wanted me to show passport as a valid I'd proof while I did have a valid driver's license and ID proof. Who carries a passport to a bar for a Saturday night. I have travelled across the world but have never been asked a passport to enter a club. I also offered to show a picture of my passport but he was like I gotta physically see and touch the passport. What kind of rule is this ?? Plus at the same time he allowed 2 below 21 years people without id because the were local and familiar. You guys have to upgrade your policy, this is not 1995.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Drinks are great but DJ SUCKS!! 0/10 does not know the vibes :( :( better music and this place would be THE place
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Oh, the Ritz. Like most people at the beach, I have a love/hate relationship with this place. It's slogan "A Great Place to Meet" may very well be true because you'll usually find it overwhelmingly packed on Friday and Saturday nights. Still, a large percentage of the clientele is obnoxious and overserved on these nights. I generally steer clear unless its a special occasion. However, for Happy Hour or to watch football on a Sunday afternoon, the Ritz is actually a great bar. Barstools that are hidden away on busy nights are repositioned around the huge, central bar, TVs all around, three pool tables as well as foosball are available for enjoyment. It's really a completely different vibe. The service is usually efficient even on the crazy, busy nights, and I actually love a few of the bartenders. All in all, I'd say the Ritz is a little overrated as far as beach bars go, but it's still "a pretty good place to meet." :)
google avatar

Erin W.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE. Poor service, drinks suck and are overpriced, and the bouncers take their jobs way too seriously!!! I'd spend my money elsewhere.. like Riverside
google avatar

Katie F.

Yelp
Awesome DJ. Spacious bar. 100 different kinds of liquor, which they pour generous amounts of into their drinks. patio overlooking the beach. After coming here a number of times i'm still impressed. don't you worry Ritz, i'll be back soon :)
google avatar

Louis K.

Yelp
While visiting Jacksonville a couple of weeks ago my wife and I wanted to find a local bar for a few cocktails. The concierge at our hotel recommended The Ritz. Well.......what a great recommendation!!!!! The moment we went inside we felt welcomed and as if we have been going there for years. We sat at the bar and were served by a awesome bartender named Madison who engaged us in great conversation. The drinks were amazing with plenty of alcohol!! We can't wait to return to Jax so that we can visit again. Our only complaint is that this bar is not located in our hometown. We would certainly be regulars.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Typical beach bar, nothing special! I know most of the door people here and they're nice. the bartenders not so much. A few times I've come in when it's not super busy and blatantly been ignored (making eye contact with the bartender who will walk by multiple times and just not say anything). Then when I tell the door guy about the issue when I'm leaving all he does is flirt instead of listening to my complaint and resolving it. but you can't really expect much at the beach bars. They're not known for their professionalism.
google avatar

Matthew T.

Yelp
Honesty worst bar I've ever been to I was with 3 friends sitting on the patio having a drink talking and some fat 300+ bouncer said I was to leave the property for no reason wouldn't give me a reason wouldn't talk and kicked me out I will never go back to this bar they are unreasonable and overpriced do yourself a favor and never come here than you and goodbye

Brooke W.

Yelp
Turned away my party of 6 for absolutely no reason. They asked for ID then said "we can't let you in." We're normal people age 21+. Incredibly rude.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Depending on when you come determines the crowd that is catered to. If you come at night then expect the young college crowd. Come during the day on a weekend and expect a mixture of both older and younger. Show up on a Sunday afternoon for a jags away game and expect everyone, no matter their age, with the same depressed (why am I watching the jags) face. I haven't been here at night in a while but I'm sure it's still the same... Crowded with long lines at the door and at the bar. During the day it is much more manageable. There ability to sit at the bar and enjoy a conversation and a strong drink. My kryptonite is the $3 sailor Jerry. Trust me, a $3 drink goes a long way here. If you come during the day you can get a hot dog for I think $1 and they have free boiled peanuts. Back to the jags game, one of the best deals around is there free food. On away games the staff makes food here as well as at the Brix. Don't forget to tip the people cooking, they appreciate it greatly. If you aren't interested in the food here (usually just wings and burgers) wonder over to the Brix, grab a plate, and come back over.
google avatar

Eileen S.

Yelp
Unfortunately we couldn't even make it past the rude, racist, and sexist bouncer(s). I completely understand needing to double check IDs against credit cards, asking to spell name, etc. to help prevent fake IDs. But every person in our group was talked down to, we didn't feel welcome or wanted. We decided to take our money elsewhere after the bouncer asked an especially horrendous question to our friend - if she had gained weight since her ID picture. We wanted to address the issue with management to make them aware of the situation, but were told that there wasn't a manager on site tonight. We are very disappointed with this experience and wish it could have been address with management tonight.
google avatar

Ally S.

Yelp
Last night a group of about 10 of us came by around 9:45-10. My 28 year old brother was refused entry for having a "fake ID" Bouncer with a ponytail refused to check other forms of ID and no cop was around to validate his LEGAL license. My brother has a full beard. As if a group of 25-30 year olds are bringing a minor to party at the Ritz. This is why no one goes here anymore. They missed out on a lot of business from 10 people looking to get rowdy. Hoptinger was great tho, highly recommend that!

Bryan S.

Yelp
I would not recommend this place unless you are white. In fact, you probably can't get if you're not. The door man enjoys his position of power and refused to let me for being "too drunk" translation too black! This was before I said anything other than hello. Racial issues aside, it's an overcrowded place for people 18-23. (Yes, people use fakes here). Better options at the beach bars and I regret my decision to try and waste my money there.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
Is there less than 1 star? The bartender ignores you unless you are a man. The manager would rather check her phone than talk to customers with an issue with one of their machines. Unless you want to waste time, go some where else.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
It's your typical beach bum/locals bar. Chances are you know the bar tenders and you will definitely run into someone you know from high school for sure (No matter what age you are, haha). Beer and liquor. Great for day time drinks and sporting events.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Terrible place. Service awful, staff unattentive. Went to men's room for a quick moment my half drunk drink was taken away and my seat was taken by the clown carding at door because he wanted to sit next to friend. I confronted him, he could care less. Also told bartender about missing drink she could care less. If they want to have a bar just for themselves then good for them. Surprised this place has been around for as long as it has. Complete crap place, they should learn some service 101 skills. DO NOT GO HERE!...much better places in town.
google avatar

Avery B.

Yelp
Been kicked out of this establishment multiple times, but keep coming back. Lines are often long but worth the wait. Pool tables available during the week and have great weekday drink specials. Would rate 5 stars but the popcorn isn't that salty. 8/10 would get kicked out of this place again.
google avatar

Christine J.

Yelp
As soon as we walked in a bartender looked at us and rudely said what do you want? My jaw dropped and I thought he was kidding. He then with the same bad tone repeated himself. We literally hadn't even sat down yet and did nothing to deserve bad treatment. When he returned with our drinks I asked him if he was having a bad night and he ignored me and walked away. I should have read the reviews and avoided this place. When I told the other bartenders and front door guy about the grumpy service they admitted that he always has a bad attitude. I thought he was just having a bad day but maybe he just hates his job or his life. He probably shouldn't work with customers directly. (Edit: He appeared to be asian and I believe they said his name was Arckey)

Yelp
My son is active duty military, he and 4 of his shipmates went to this bar. One of the guys ordered a drink, it was $5.00. He pulled $5.00 out of his wallet. The bartender rudely plopped a tip jar in front of him. He ignored it, next thing he had bouncers escort him out. My son yelled to the other shipmates "Let's go..." and out the door they went. My son went up to the bouncers, hands in the air in a somewhat surrender position and asked politely why their shipmate had been tossed. They explained the bartender wanted him out because he didn't tip. The kid didn't even get a sip of his drink, he wasn't refunded his $5 and he was tossed out like yesterday's news. I'm sorry a tip is given for services received and pouring one drink then having a tip jar slammed on the bar in front of you... that doesn't get a tip in my book. The bouncers were polite to my son in answering his question as to what happened but I think it is stupid they toss someone out for not decorating the mahogany quick enough! Everyone beware of this joint... it sounds like a rip off joint if ever there was one! If you get treatment like this, hit them where it hurts, their pocketbooks! Stay clear and the only ones being tossed out will be them on the street when they start losing clientele! I answered not sure on almost all of the questions for the simple fact that my son & his friends weren't there long enough to find out anything about the place.
