15 Restaurants on the Oregon Coast Worth Visiting | Eater Portland

"Pacific City’s understated, simultaneously casual and upscale restaurant on the Nestucca River makes for a great weekend brunch before a day on the dunes or dinner after fishing on the area’s historic dory boats. Focusing on Oregon seafood — think dory-caught rockfish enrobed in a blonde ale batter, line-caught Coho salmon served with smoked potato gnocchi, and all types of oysters and clams harvested by small family businesses from nearby bays — Riverhouse provides a menu that’s as eco-conscious as it is inviting. Oenophiles will be pleased by the wine list, which includes strong selections from the Willamette Valley and regions in Europe." - Jennifer Burns Bright

Our server Ryan was excellent as was our food and wine. We had the Ahi Poke Bowl and the Salmon. Highly recommend and will definitely be back when in town.

Google
Good menu selection for seafood lovers. Great location along the river but not utilized as from where I could tell no outside seating. Maybe there is I just did not see it. Make a reservation on a Sunday for sure in season. Had the local oysters and they were fresh and very good! The citrus & butter clam pasta was fair not overly flavorful. It was hot up stairs and the white wines needed ice. Wife had the burger and she is not a push over and thought it was juicy and enjoyed it. The fries had a bit too much salt for her but I had a few and enjoyed them.

My husband I had heard wonderful reviews about The Riverhouse Nestucca. I made a reservation for Friday at 5pm via a message. They called me back the same day during business hours to confirm. We were allowed to choose our table so we sat with a window facing the river. It was just before sunset and the river was a pleasant view to see. Honestly everything on the menu sounded fantastic. The staff were all outstanding as was the food. Everything was fresh, vibrant and so delicious. This meal was a wonderful treat for us and we plan on going back to explore some other dishes.

Google
Amazing place, what a gem! Everyone was so sweet and welcoming. The service made us feel at home. They squeezed us in without a reservation and with two kids. They were so accommodating and kind to us. The food was delicious! We had the scallops, shrimp tacos, and cheeseburger. The homemade bread brought me back to childhood. We will definitely be back. Make sure you stop by here if you visit Pacific City!

We had such a good experience at the Riverhouse Restaurant we went back a second time. Tucked away from the bustle of the main Pacific City drag, the restaurant is in a beautiful location with views onto the river. We did not have reservations when we showed up but they were able to accommodate us around an hour after we showed up. It is highly recommended you make reservations ahead of time as this place fills up. The menu was extensive but not overwhelming. The grilled muscles with garlic aioli was excellent, as was the chowder. The grilled jumbo scallops we had on our first visit was excellent, paired with a well cooked risotto. The halibut on the second night was good however, the rice it came with was not well cooked and the flavours of the sides were a little bland. Desserts came in generous portions and were OK. Service was faultless. All in all, a charming place to eat while visiting Pacific City. We would definitely return.

This quaint, narrow and rustic restaurant building overlooks the Nusteca River. The dinning area is on the upper floor. There’s a lift but it was out of order at the time we went. This is now one of our favorite restaurant at the coast. I would recommend the calamari and the paella. Delicious food, great atmosphere, and friendly staff.

Google
We had high hopes for this restaurant after booking our reservation months in advance, expecting a memorable dining experience. Unfortunately, it fell far short of expectations. From the moment we were seated, the service was unwelcoming. Our server was noticeably rude and made us feel uncomfortable throughout the meal. There was a lack of warmth or attentiveness that really set a negative tone. The food itself didn’t redeem the experience either. Our order took a long time to arrive, and when it did, it was underwhelming. The steak was extremely chewy, the crab was dry, and the sauce that was prominently featured online wasn’t even included on the dish. Everything felt a bit off—not at all the high-quality meal we had anticipated. To end on a positive note, we did find a gem just across the street and ended up dining there the following few nights. The contrast in service and food quality was night and day. Sadly, I wouldn’t recommend this place based on our experience.

Google
We had dinner here late evening on a Friday. It was a fun, friendly atmosphere. The food was very good. The crab Mac & cheese was really creamy and good, although missing a little flavor to us! Clam chowder was flavorful and hearty! Salad dressings are homemade and fantastic!

Yelp
Beautiful setting overlooking the Nestucca River. Close to the beach in Pacific City. Not just a locals restaurant and quality dinner that is affordable. Arrived late for my reservation and they had tried calling even though cell service is spotty in the area. Still, seated by our waitress who as it turns out waited all the tables. I believe she had close to 12 with 10 occupied by two to four people. She did have help with food delivery service from a young lady who never acknowledged us waiting up front 10 minutes. Started with Calamari - lightly breaded good crunch but not over cooked so tender sitting on a nice aioli with a fire roasted lemon. Bread was also brought to table with wrapped butter. Bread came pre sliced not a small table size loaf. Darn out of clam chowder so no guess but I have heard it is great. Two piece fish and chips (frites) with house tarter and ketchup. English style very puffed up not to greasy and very tasty ling cod. Large pieces that could have been cut in half and still been plenty. We worked through it happily. The house frites were excellent and had a snap to them and held shape. Very good. Citrus Miso Halibut w/sushi rice, bok choy flame grilled and a cream sauce that tasted like I needed another bowl of rice just for more sauce. This was by far the best seafood dish I have had in Tillamook county this year. Cost under $100.00 for the two of us excluding drinks. Great night out no rush to leave felt good and full when we left. Passed on dessert. Make reservations. Limited seating. Elevator for elderly or disabled. Parking is limited. Well worth a go. No I am not so petty as to ding them a star for having one staffer that put us on ignore. All else including chef came out and thanked us.

Yelp
We were very excited for a birthday celebration at Riverhouse, but we ended up leaving before ordering. It smelled wonderful and I'm sure the food is good, but the place is so incredibly loud we couldn't even hear each other talk across a tiny table. And of course, because it was so loud, everyone in the restaurant was practically yelling to be heard, which made it unbearable. We also were seated at the tiniest two-top table I've ever seen, right in the middle of the small restaurant, which made it feel like we were in the middle of a walkway, and the beautiful river view they're known for was impossible to see. When we realized they only serve beer and wine (no cocktails), we decided that was the third strike and gestured to each other (because we couldn't talk with the noise) to find somewhere else in the tiny town for our dinner. Very disappointing.

Yelp
After all the raving reviews here about this chef's talent, I was left disappointed. Maybe this was an off day, but basically, the food was bland without taste. This was true for this highly decorated clam chowder where people claim they have never had any better (I disagree), and the seafood gumbo, where the shrimp and calamari had no taste. The only delicious ingredient was the andouille sausage, and that wasn't made in-house. I felt nothing, including the clam chowder, was made that day. Ambiance and the service was fine.

Cindy B.

Yelp
We had reservations at 4:30 and immediately got seated since that is the opening time. All the staff was friendly, especially our waiter. It was different due to being such a small place, but the food was delicious and worth it. I had the claim linguine and hubby had the lingcod tacos. We were served warm sourdough bread with butter. We are traveling and will be here for another week and a half and we will definitely be back before we leave. I will have the clam linguine again.

Brigete B.

Yelp
Chef special-Poke Bowl was so yummy can't wait for our next visit. Sorry for the late review .

Yelp
Nice food, nice ambiance. We made a reservations for dinner and the place was packed (they only have 12 tables). My scallops were superb but it was advertised to come over home made linguine, so I was a bit disappointed to see it came over orecchiette pasta instead, definitely not homemade. However, the sauce with wild mushrooms, hazelnuts, bacon and butternut squash was so good, it made up for the disappointment. My friends had salmon (good) and crab roll (very nice). The service was a bit sluggish.

Yelp
The staff squeezed us in at the last moment and I'm so glad they did! The chowder was incredible, scallops and risotto were delicious, and my husband loved his burger

Yelp
Repeat customer at this coastal spot. The steamers are so good with delicious broth and love the cozy atmosphere. The restaurant is upstairs so be prepared to get up and down!

Yelp
This is a must if you're nearby. I stopped Sept 15 for brunch and had the Crab Benedict with a cup of chowder, which was amazing! Some of the best fresh Crab Benedict I've had at the coast, with large pieces of crab & breakfast potatoes that are irresistible. I usually don't eat many of the potatoes because they fill me up and I don't have room for the crab but I couldn't help myself, these potatoes were amazing. The perfect balance of crunch and softness, I've never had any better than these. Even the grapes and pineapple were delicious. 10 out of 10. The views of the river are good for the soul, and the friendly staff pointing out the otter in the river just made my day!

Yelp
Food was tasty fresh seafood More than enough I had halibutit spouse had Salmon We also split appetizer of scrumcious fresh clams broth with it delicious We had Rose with our meals We made reservations which was good as it is a small place with 10-12 tables Best meal I have had in Pacific City

Ayden I.

Yelp
Food was great, however servers and hosts were very rude and we're not welcoming at all. Was sighed at upon arrival, overall unwelcoming staff.

Yelp
Absolutely great food. Oysters were the best I've EVER had Clam chowder absolutely delicious also best I've EVER had! Crab Mac fishy but delicious. Beware they open at 4:30 in Sundays and reservations not needed but highly recommended ! Clean place, great staff, will not disappoint

Angie R.

Yelp
Great view of the river. Excellent service. AMAZING food. We had the aguachili, the crab Caesar and the halibut. We also had a glass of the local Pinot Gris. All were perfect. Will be back on our next trip!!

Yelp
On a friend's recommendation we traveled to Pacific City to see what the fuss was about. I didn't try the appetizers my friends ordered so can't review them but my linguine and clam entree was the best choice for me. -A generous portion of a saffron infused sauce with clams stacked high over perfectly cooked linguine. I just wish I had a slice of bread to soak up the remaining sauce. A decadent chocolate dessert was enjoyed by all. Service could be better but the view and food make up for it. Will return just to have that linguine again.
google avatar

Denise N.

Yelp
The food wonderful! Started with oysters on the half shell. Sweet, fresh and the sauces a perfect compliment. Mom's clam linguine was packed with fresh clams in a rich sauce that wasn't heavy, just lovely. She loved it! My paella was probably the best paella I've eaten. So flavorful with just the right hint of heat. The crunchy bottom - my favorite bites. Mom's bread pudding rich and decadent, my panna cotta light and yummy. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great place, probably the best cuisine for the area with huge portions. They were slammed when we showed up at 5:30, but we told them we would be a quick turn and they sat us!!! We kept our end of the bargain and they didn't disappoint. Will be making reservations for every beach trip we make. So happy to have found this place
google avatar

Annie O.

Yelp
The food was incredible - the paella was so fresh and had a good mixture of seafood as well as some Chorizo sausage and brocollini. The waitress recommended the best wine to complement it (a Tempranillo). The chocolate mousse was so flavorful and moist. The service was wonderful and we had such a great time that we ended up shutting the place down!

Yelp
Well came back here after a year and tried the fish & chips again and this year they were excellent!. A year ago I was not so impressed, so maybe they had a bad moment then. This place gets real busy so book early. I have not tried there other menu items but I did not hear any complaints from friends. Nice location near the river and service is stellar!

Yelp
High-end dining close to the coast. Make sure you get a reservation. Love it every time we eat there.

Mark K.

Yelp
Definitely go for the halibut. Awesome and actually a huge portion! Just buying a hunk that size will cost you $26 at Costco. The tocos were great, also huge portion, the crab Caesar salad killer, and the key lime deserts were great. We'll go there for sure next time we're out at Cape Kiwanda!

Katie R.

Yelp
Delicious! We made a last minute reservation on Valentine's Day and we were so delighted with our choice. The overall atmosphere was impeccable, kind service staff, really comfortable space. Will be coming back next time we're in town!
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible dinner: crab and shrimp Mac and cheese and scallops risotto. I was NOT expecting such a perfect meal, well prepared, well seasoned. The place doesn't look like much on the outside, but SO WORTH stepping inside!! Go!!!!!!

Yelp
Words alone cannot capture the experience @ The Riverhouse Nestucca. Chef Jeremy's talent transcends what can be taught in culinary school, much like no art school can teach someone to paint like Leonardo da Vinci. Chef Jeremy embodies pure, unteachable passion. His obsession with perfection is unmatched, and I have encountered only a few like him in my lifetime. Chef Jeremy is not only a true chef, but also an exceptional cook. His humility and extraordinary talent are rare. From my first bite, I knew this place was extraordinary. The clam chowder is the best most will ever eat in their lifetime, the gumbo rivals that of Chef Paul Prudhomme, and the flavor pairing in our last dish exemplifies Chef Jeremy's natural talent. The amount of work and time necessary for the dishes we received is more than the average consumer will ever know. It starts days in advance with countless hours of prep from a well-tuned team, so we can enjoy these meals in less than 30 minutes. Dish after dish arrived, each surpassing our expectations. Everything we ordered was priced lower than the quality and portion of the dish received, making this culinary excellence accessible to everyone. Hands down, it was the absolute best dining experience we have had in a very long time. Certainly, it was the best experience ever along the Oregon coast, especially in Pacific City. It feels inadequate to give this level of a restaurant only five stars.
google avatar

Yelp
Just recently came to this gem for the first time. Get reservations! The food here is astoundingly amazing- our party got the clam chowder (a must), the paella, fish and chips, chinook salmon, and the absolute star was the dungeoness crab mac and cheese! Also leave room for dessert! I can't wait to return! Thanks for an incredible evening

Yelp
Great little spot I've been waiting to try. We had the salmon bacon burger, two oysters on the half shell, fish tacos, and andouille jambalaya. I had the burger and what I thought it was going to be a filet of salmon was a chopped and formed patty. Couple of fishy bites but it was still pretty tasty. Fries were unique but heavily seasoned. Wouldn't get it again but it had some moments. Fish tacos were loved by my son. Oysters were fresh and delicious. The star is the jambalaya. Fish was cooked perfectly and it was amazing tasting. Not too spicy just the right amount of heat. We eat out a lot to new restaurants in Portland and along the coast and this was legit delicious. I'll be back just for that jambalaya alone. Great service, cool views, and pretty top notch food.

Diane S.

Yelp
This is absolutely the best restaurant within 100 miles! We never miss an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful food that is exceptional. The restaurant is very small, so it is important to make a reservation because it is full every night. I would recommend making a reservation at least a week ahead. The staff are friendly and efficient...make us feel so welcome. I would like to make a recommendation of what to order... But it's all so wonderful and delicious, I wouldn't know what to recommend!!
google avatar

Kait M.

Yelp
The crab mac & cheese, and the salmon with local mushrooms, horseradish cream, and sage butter were absolutely delicious.
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
Food was amazing as it has been for years! Joesph waited on us both evenings we ate at River House. The quality of seafood beyond! The care put into preparing and serving these delicious meals is much appreciated! River House has earned our business every time we come to Pacific City.
google avatar

Yelp
Another splendid evening!! JoJo was great! very polite and professional. Knew the menu well, including the new added items.

Yelp
Such a charming little place, nestled alongside the Nestucca River. It feels a world away from the coast, even though it's so close. We called ahead early in the evening and were able to get a reservation same day. Upon arrival the dining room was full & vibrant & tiny! I'm not sure if any of the pictures do it justice, but it is really small! Maybe about 12 tables total - a few 4 tops on each side and 3 sets of 2 tops down the middle. We had to wait a few minutes to be seated until some tables cleared out, so we enjoyed looking out at the river while listening to the music that was playing - such a date night vibe. Upon being seated we were given water and warm bread with butter. We ordered the mixed greens with honey mustard vinaigrette, the crab Mac and cheese, and the burger with rosemary fries - yum. The portions were more than generous, so much so that we couldn't finish our entrees and had absolutely no room for dessert! This is a nice little place for a cozy date night. The wait staff was super kind, very friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Josie S.

Yelp
This place was excellent. The restaurant is small but cozy and inviting. The dinning is on the second floor and has a great view of the river. The staff was amazing. Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. We even meet the owner who was great to chat with. The food was top notch. There are so many dishes we wanted to try. My husband said the Crab Mac & Cheese was the best he ever had. They had a buttery crumble crust on top that he couldn't stop talking about. I'm gluten free so went with the steak and it was cooked perfectly. The rosemary fries are hand pressed and loaded with flavor. Overall, I was really pleased with the attention to detail, the portion size, and the flavor. This is a small coastal town, miles away from anything, with a gem of a restaurant. I wished I lived closer so I could try all the dishes.
google avatar

Brooke H.

Yelp
This was so close to a five star rating. It really depends on what you order. My husband ordered the Coho and it was truly amazing. I got the fish tacos, and I wasn't thrilled. The salmon was an elevated dish, and my fish tacos were more like bar food. The rockfish was flavorless and had an almost grainy texture. With all the elements together, it was just okay. The fish wasn't the star, it felt more like the shredded lettuce and the poblano were designed to hide it. Now to my absolute favorites of the night: the hush puppies and bread pudding. The Dungeness crab hush puppies were perfect. Absolutely perfect. I would've happily ordered two plates of them and eaten that for dinner. The crab wasn't hidden at all, like I was worried it would be. It was perfectly balanced and perfectly crunchy. The brown sugar bread pudding made me so happy. Brown sugar is one of my favorite flavors, so I was sold by just the name. It's a surprisingly big portion of bread pudding, so I'm glad my husband and I split it. Topped with vanilla ice cream, I couldn't have asked for a better dessert. The service was okay and the restaurant was small, but overlooked the River. Everything considered, I would go back and order the hush puppies, Coho salmon, and a bread pudding and consider it a perfect meal.

Yelp
We found this place just by a random drive by. And it is now our favorite go to spot for date night. The food is amazing along with the people who run this restaurant. Everyone is always so sweet and talkative. I always recommend the calamari! Coming from a calamari fanatic, this is the best I've had.

Brian O.

Yelp
It has reopened as the River House. Still same wait staff the menu has been improved.

Yelp
We made reservations after booking a night at Inn at Cape Kiwanda (which I highly recommend, loved it), and we very excited after reading reviews. After making a reservation, we arrived on time, but still had to wait 15 minutes for a table. The older gentlemen at the front, was lovely, and offered us drinks while waiting. After we were seated, it all went down hill. Our waitress was not very friendly, and never checked on us. We were brought our apps and food at the same time. We ordered the crab hush puppies, and they were burned. Barely edible. My partner ordered the New York steak, medium, and received a cow that was still mooing. No seasonings. I ordered the salmon. Raw on the inside, burned on the outside. We were so disappointed. Bill was $135, with no booze. We really were super bummed. Luckily, we loved our stay at the inn and cape kiwanda, and the weather was breathtaking. I gave two stars because I loved the ambiance and the older gentlemen at the front. It's really an adorable little spot, but the food and service were a major bust for us.
google avatar

Yasuyo T.

Yelp
We came here with two families. So we sat at table outside. Even it was a middle of summer. I felt a little bit chilly to sit outside. Let's talk about food. I like this place because they use local food like oysters and fish. Clam Chowder: awesome! It warmed me up. I was annoyed that if we ordered additional cup, it was charged for it. Anyway the soup was very creamy but not overpowering. It was nicely seasoned. Oyster Shooters: Oysters were so fresh and meaty. Seafood Paella: the rice was overcooked and dried. It was lack of flavor. This was the least favorite food. Scallop: it was a bit bland. The scallops were fresh and not too chewy. Chocolate cake: it was very simple but very moist and I enjoyed it. Overall I enjoyed the food to try fresh local food.
google avatar

Paolo S.

Yelp
The view over the river is just breathtaking it really makes the whole dining experience special. We had the poutine, fish and chips, clam chowder and it was all fantastic. The service was excellent as well. This might be the best restaurant in Pacific City.

Pamela K.

Yelp
One of the best meals my husband and I have had. Seasonal menu, fresh, local cuisine. Incredible service. Highly recommended.

Jake Redmond ..

Yelp
The audacity to charge so much for such awful food is just wild. Ordered shrimp pasta and fish and chips. House linguine was like boiled shoelaces. Shrimp was way overcooked. Breading on fish was thick and raw, pieces of fish were huge and flavorless. Fries were ok I guess. I'm so surprised to see so many glowing reviews. Possibly the worst $80 I've ever spent
google avatar

Natasha K.

Yelp
NOTE: to go orders have a 10% gratuity already added on. Don't be surprised when you see it on the bill The food here is absolutely delicious! We got the cup of clam chowder, fish and chips and crab Mac n cheese. Everything was phenomenal and so tasty! It's hard to pick a favorite amongst all of them! The clam chowder was creamy and hearty. Full of clams and potatoes. We asked for some bread to sop it up and so glad we did! A cup was definitely not enough. Go for the bowl! Fish and chips was probably the best fish and chips I've ever had! The crust reminded me of beer batter, so light and crispy and the cod was juicy, flaky and melted in my mouth. Surprisingly, the French fries were to die for! Very unusual to have both the fish and the chips be the star of the dish. Crab Mac n cheese was FULL of crab and a few massive prawns. So tasty and creamy and a huge portion. For the amount of crab on the dish, I'd say it's well worth the price! Takeout is great and easy here but just remember 10% gratuity is added on in all to go orders. I knocked a star off because we were not told when we ordered but rather when we got there and saw it on the bill. Some communication would've been nice!

David O.

Yelp
Smug arrogant service woman. She made it seem like they were really busy on a weekday. Made us wait for 10 minutes while 5 tables were available. She made an excuse that there reservations coming. Food was ordinary, expensive and not worth it. Only 3 other groups of guests arrive and when we left there were 6 tables available. Arrogance is not the type of service for such a nice town.
google avatar

Ross S.

Yelp
There are few options for a great sit down restaurant on the Oregon Coast, however The Riverhouse Nestucca is one of them! If you are looking for some locally caught seafood, from a variety of fish, to crab, to cioppino, this is the place to come! You have great views of the river, and are right off the main drag in Pacific City. One note is that they do not take reservations anymore, so depending on the day I would show up early if it is a weekend in the summer.
google avatar

Abby S.

Yelp
I'm delayed in writing this review, but I still have mixed feelings about my recent visit here. While the setting is beautiful, the food was kind of underwhelming. We tried the salmon and beef for entrees. The salmon was over cooked and dry. The beef was kind of tough to cut into. The appetizer we tried was the grilled bread with burrata. It was pretty good, but the bread was kind of tough to bite into. I'm not sure I'd retry the dishes we tried, but the view was so pretty that I think I'd return for a nice date night.

Yelp
I celebrated my birthday here and the meal was WONDERFUL!!! It's a very casual place that has excellent food. I had the crab (and shrimp) Mac and cheese. When I saw the price, I was thinking to myself, you better be worth it. There was an abundance of crab meat and the shrimp was a nice touch. The sauce was velvety and tasty. Hubby got the steak with a mustard au juis and he loved it. The service was just ok. That would be my on "compliant". We REALLY REALLY enjoyed our meal and will absolutely come back. Reservations are strongly suggested, and so worth it!
google avatar

Phil B.

Yelp
Delectable and delightful. No regrets selecting this quaint place as our dinner location. Even though we had to sit outside on a cooler evening, it was still well worth it and I have to note we didn't call ahead until about 2hrs in advance so not surprised they were booked out inside already. So reservations are recommended. We selected the Smoked Fishes as our starter, which I could eat all night every night. The ricotta is a wonderful accompaniment to the in-house smoked fish. An offer of the Oysters Shooters was a must as well. Entrees, both the Pacific Coho and Seafood Paella, were full of flavor as well. Wonderfully presented and truly delectable. We didn't have room for dessert but I'm sure it would have been just as delightful, as was the service all evening. Thank you.

Mike M.

Yelp
The Calamari is super. Wide selection of seafood options, more than just fried options. I had grilled salmon and it was wonderful.

Yelp
Such a great place. My wife and I were driving up the coast from San Francisco and couldn't believe how great the food and service was. This is a must stop at if you can. Make a reservation though as the dining room is not huge.

Yelp
Small and unassuming dinner spot with an excellent menu right on the river in Pacific City. Enjoyed an excellent bowl of clam chowder, delicious hush puppies, and a creamy crab parmesan ravioli.

Yelp
Coho Salmon, Crab Mac and peanut butter panacotta , it was absolutely delicious! Service was great and ambiance too. As a French, only disappointed with oysters in a glass. High recommended anyway !
