The 18 Best Coffee Shops Around D.C.

"This Eritrean-owned coffee shop debuted at the busy Shaw intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and 11th Street NW in 2020. The nucleus of the sit-and-stay hangout, open daily 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., is a touch screen-enabled roaster that extracts flavor out of coffee beans from Guatemala, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Brazil. Local bakery Fresh Baguette supplies goods daily." - Tierney Plumb, Emily Venezky

The frozen mocha ($7.15, tax included) was well-blended and delicious but was the “large” seemed just a regular-sized serving. There is plenty of seating, both indoors and out.

Google
I visited on Dec, 27 around 1:30 pm. The barista could barely speak English, I was asking her if there was any lighter roasted option. She couldn't answer the question, so I ended up ordering what the menu had. Then I asked her about the restroom’s passcode and asked her for a cup of water. She still seemed very confused. This situation was just very weird to me.

Google
The Roasted Boon has a cool atmosphere. The roaster is displayed on one side with plenty of seating around. Beautiful baskets and murals on the walls. The most important part…the coffee is excellent!

Google
I found this place whilst searching for coffee shops. It had some good reviews. I’m glad I came. Almond croissant was hot and fresh. Black drip coffee and cream are my go to. Very good!

Hind KH

Google
I came here for coffee and I was disappointed. I ordered Shaw latte and I didn’t like the flavor. my sister had flat white and the staff asked her which size she wanted it!! It doesn’t have sizes actually. Anyway, the place is really good to study and get things done.

Google
The Roasted Boon is a coffee shop on a corner in the Shaw neighborhood. If you see the giant "Shaw" mural on the outside, you've reached it. They sell a variety of coffees and pastries. They use Ethiopian coffee and my latte was well done. Not as creamy as other coffee shops, but still good. There are more murals inside including a colorful map of the world. The unisex restrooms are open and there are two large areas of safe-distance seating. There's a large outdoor patio with tables spread out safely. Staff were very friendly, wearing masks and remembered many of their regular customers.

Google
A terrific addition to the neighborhood! The latte is great. Selection of beautiful pastries. Reasonable prices. They also have frappés and smoothies. Lots of indoor space and outdoor tables with umbrellas. Maybe they will add breakfast sandwiches to the menu?

Google
Had the Shaw latte (espresso, french vanilla, steamed milk, nutmeg) with oat milk and lavender latte with oat and even though the Shaw seems to be more popular . I loved the lavender better. Service was great and place is cute and right next to Logan Circle

Yelp
It's a nice space for breakfast and the coffee is pretty good. The staff is always friendly and they keep it tidy.

Yelp
This place roasts their own coffee. Ditch the awful Starbucks and come support local businesses. They have coffee from Ethiopia for sale they roast fresh.

Yelp
Making it a point to check out new coffee shops around DC and I've driven past the roasted boon enough times that it was definitely past due for me to come check them out. I stopped by midday on a Sunday and it was already packed with people. The interior space is deceptively large and they have a full bar and offer happy hour in the afternoons seven days a week. The people behind the counter were super friendly and after staring at the menu for a few minutes, I opted to go with the Shaw iced latte, which is just a little bit different from my normal go to. Normally, I always order an iced vanilla latte and this is an iced French vanilla latte with a sprinkling of nutmeg on top... it's a little bit sweeter than I generally like but it was really tasty and refreshing on a warm spring day. Between seating and free Wi-Fi and happy hour and delicious coffee I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Nice place for Sunday morning coffee, not too crowded. Also there's outside seats, but it is right at the intersection, so I prefer inside. Lite jazz, nice atmosphere, but it smelled not great, maybe because of the leaking air conditioner.

Yelp
The Roasted Boon is a coffeehouse that is nestled in the Shaw 'hood - their menu offers pour overs, espresso, iced/frozen drinks, teas, smoothies, and even bagels/pastries. They even recently added fuul to the menu! I stopped by to get a caffeine fix and tried the Shaw Latte - this was prepared with espresso, French vanilla flavoring, and topped with some grated nutmeg. This was served extra hot and was pretty tasty! There was only one employee on site, who seemed to be manning the cashier and preparing the drinks/food - pretty impressive! There was ample seating, and I really liked the decor and the open space. There's also outdoor seating as well for those who like al fresco dining. Great neighborhood spot! Extremely limited street parking available. +great lattes +friendly service +indoor and outdoor seating available +limited street parking

Yelp
drink is good, not too strong and not too sweet, I got the shaw latte! vibe in the cafe was also nice on a friday.
google avatar

Yelp
A cute, roomy space in Logan Circle with decent coffee. It has a small number of seating options compared to the size of the cafe, which gives a bit more privacy and makes it ideal for people who don't want to be crammed together. I had an iced vanilla latte; while I think the overall coffee quality was good, it was a bit too sweet and the vanilla syrup had a very strong taste - it almost tasted more like a whole sugar cookie than just vanilla. I think maybe next time I would try ordering just simple syrup instead.

Yelp
Came here for the first time and it's the cutest, coziest coffee shop one could ask for. I ordered the hot caramel macchiato and it was so flavorful, rich, and smooth. I look forward to coming back.

Shannon M.

Yelp
Came here on a Wednesday morning (10:30 or so) for a late breakfast and coffee. My bagel sandwich w/ bacon was first served without bacon. Sent it back, and received a hair in my cheese (pic attached). My mistake for not researching better cafes in DC.
google avatar

Allie H.

Yelp
Super cute! Had this as a morning pick me up and didn't disappoint . And for DC coffee, the price was decent too! Very good matcha and super friendly staff!
google avatar

LeAnn F.

Yelp
This place is so cute. I love how you can bring your doggos here. It's a great place to study, work, and coffee date. There's not lot of seating here but they do have outdoor seating. I love how that the coffee is definitely freshly brewed and the coffees come all around the world. I got the chai latte. The staff was really quick to make my latte. I would recommend coming here!
google avatar

Patsy W.

Yelp
Cute place. Though, I felt bad for the employee. She was clearly the only employee there. She was stuck making all the coffee drinks and the food too. Food was a little pricey but overall good. Though my friend had the quiche, and she was expecting like a whole mini quiche. She only got like 1/2 a mini quiche instead. Coffees were good though.
google avatar

Yelp
A great little coffee shop in the DC area where you can get coffee, pastries, wines, and smoothies. Service was great and friendly. A great spot to study or work a bit if you work remote and are looking to get out of the house.

Simon S.

Yelp
Great coffee and smoothie shop! The environment is great and the drinks are wonderful. I only wish it was open longer.........one day.

Yelp
This cafe is one of those that opened during or after Covid. It's an Eritrean outfit. Their disposable cups were so lovely that I didn't dispose mine and took it home, rinsed it, and am keeping it. :-) It's expensive though. But then again, everything is expensive now in DC. 'Tis inflation time. The décor is Ethiopian/Eritrean, but not oppressively so. It's a wide open space, not cosy / claustrophobic like Harrer (another Ethio coffee shop).
google avatar

Namir S.

Yelp
The Roasted Boon is a cute neighborhood coffee shop! Nothing pretentious, but friendly staff, a lot of space (seems rare these days). Was nice to see people out and reading and working in a coffee shop again. Their coffee beans aren't quite my style hence the 4 instead of 5 stars, felt a bit light on the flavor for an espresso drink, might be there level of roast. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Abel M.

Yelp
So this is about my 5th time coming here! The coffee is delicious. Every beverage I have tried here is awesome but there are some things that have stood out to me. 1.) the customer service sucks! The cashiers/baristas have an attitude. They never great you back and seem as if they don't want to be here. 2.)On top of that, every time I've gotten a pastry with the exception of the first time I came here, the pastry has tasted stale! If those two things would change, I would give it 5 Stars!
google avatar

Kristen L.

Yelp
Semret runs an amazing gem here - the coffee is roasted on site and the Eritrean tea is deliciously, warmly spiced. Pastries are fresh, mimosas are $3, the coffee is fresh, what more can you ask for? On Sundays, swing by for the coffee ceremony, I'll definitely be coming back for it.
google avatar

Mischa J.

Yelp
Very nice looking coffee shop, but a little too pricey in my opinion. The staff were okay. There was no brown sugar either. Some people, like me, prefer raw brown sugar. I was happy to see that there was a recycling bin, but biodegradable plastic utensils would be a great addition as well. The decor was lovely, but it was hard to take pictures, because they are placed in areas where people sit. Good coffee shop overall, though.
google avatar

Mahathi T.

Yelp
This Eritrean-owned local gem is full of incredible treasures including a delicious Shaw Latte (try with the oat milk!) and bold Eritrean Black Tea. Both were incredibly unique and I'd highly recommend trying them! The iced Shaw Latte wasn't too sweet at all, and the flavors cut through really well- a soft but oaky coffee bean flavor. The Eritrean Tea was full of spices - cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and more. Think of a flavor and feeling similar to when you drink a good 'ol cup of Black Chai. 11/10. Amazing. Comforting. Great. Has outdoor patio seating!

Yelp
I got a lavender latte here that was pretty good. Coffee was made very quickly. I would definitely come back here to do work.

Yelp
If you need somewhere to go transitioning between work from home vs work from office... this might be a place to go! When we were there, everyone was on their laptop so we didnt feel out of place working there. Great atmosphere, plenty of indoor & outdoor seating, and cute decor! We had the Chai Latte, for me it was a little too sweet and doesnt have enough cardamom. Surprisingly, although this place serves coffee as their main, but the Pineapple Smoothie my bf got was amazing!
google avatar

Mekdela T.

Yelp
Well, I'm obsessed with this place. The pastries, coffee, smoothies....EVERYTHING was so so good, and decently priced! We decided to check this out because it was Eritrean Owned, and I'm all about supporting! The boon was so good, and the decor was absolutely beautiful. I loved what they did with the walls, they incorporated the culture so well. They have a good seating area with tables and chairs/small couches! They also have seating outside, which was also really nice! I can't wait to get back to this place!

Yelp
A cute little coffee shop on my way to work. It's been really quiet and empty these past few weeks around 7am. They are one of the few coffee shops in my area that open early enough for educators headed to school. I usually get their mocha w oat milk. It's hot and creamy. Not too sweet and enough caffeine to get me through the entire work day. The flavors blend nicely and service is always friendly and welcoming. I love the decor inside and once the panini is over, I'm happy to relax on a coffee date surrounded by the colors of east Africa. Proud to support Black businesses in DC. They are much needed!

Kathy K.

Yelp
Posted hours on their website say they open at 7a daily. Showed up at 7:20a and the lights are off and doors are locked. No updates on their social media mentioning anything about a change in hours for today. Went out of my way to come here since they were one of the few local coffee shops I found that claimed to be open before 8a on a Saturday. Guess not.
google avatar

Janelle S.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee shop. Visited today and got a Vanilla Latte. The latte was fine, not much flavoring. If you want a receipt from this place though I would ask to begin with - I was going to ask for the receipt then the employee with crumpled it without asking if I wanted it.
google avatar

Taco S.

Yelp
Dog friendly so that's an automatic 2 stars! Great coffee, friendly baristas and strong espressos for the other three stars!
google avatar

David Z.

Yelp
If you are interested in good coffee and a quiet place to work, dont come here. Headphones are non-existent here and patrons like to have their phone conversations on blast. So if you want to have coffee in a phone booth, this is your place.
google avatar

Chenée T.

Yelp
I typically try out chai lattes at every coffee shop I go to because I'm not a big coffee drinker. Happy to report that the chai at roasted boon was very good and the size of the small cup was big enough where you weren't paying $5 for a shot of a latte. Service was fast and it seemed like a great place to hang out and get some work done or catch up with friends. On a Saturday afternoon, the coffee shop was pretty full. Looking forward to try it again!
google avatar

Welsy B.

Yelp
Perfect spot for weekend coffee and journaling escape. They ground their own coffee for fresh lattes and expresso. Love love love their pastries selection. I tried the Nutella croissant. SO DELISH! Try it for yourself
google avatar

Craig H.

Yelp
Hands down one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a barista. Her reserved demeanor did not disguise her clear disdain for various customers or her interest in actuality taking orders or taking them correctly. An exceptionally long wait before I had to ask about my order, which she forgot to make. And then when she repeated it back to me, it was wrong. I left empty handed. We live one block from this coffee shop - closest shop to where we live - and we will not return.
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
Excellent Shaw latte (iced, with oat milk). Good service. Lots of spacious outdoor patio seating.
google avatar

Kalia L.

Yelp
Very cute spot! I'm always trying to find quaint coffee shops in the DMV and this one did not disappoint. The Shaw Latte was a hug in a cup....so tasty!!!! Definitely will be supporting this business for years to come.
google avatar

Priya K.

Yelp
HIGHLY recommend this adorable coffee shop. We got there a little after they opened and even though one of their employees hadn't shown up so they just opened, the lady serving us was so sweet. Freshly baked pastries hit the spot as well! Coffee was good, not super strong, one of the better lattes I had in this area!
google avatar

Peggy F.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and good location...but, the young lady behind the counter who was here yesterday and today (my first and second visits) needs some customer service training! As many other reviews have observed, the attitude I got when ordering was off-putting and definitely not what you expect or want from a local coffee shop
google avatar

Steve G.

Yelp
Really great local coffee shop. Great coffee and have pastries and savory sandwiches if you're hungry. The owner helps run the shop and she is friendly and is a great host. The shop is large and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Have wifi, pets are welcome (even have a special complimentary drink for your pup). You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Byron S.

Yelp
One of the few coffee shops open at 0600 in DC. Delicious coffee, vibrant atmosphere and good customer service. They also have wine..... next time lol
google avatar

Hunter B.

Yelp
This place had a rather basic menu. It had coffee, tea, wine, and pastries. The largest size was 16 oz for a latte and it was nothing to rave about. Not a terrible coffee shop, atomosphere and service was good, however, not my first choice.
google avatar

Quinn S.

Yelp
I wish I lived closer to the Roasted Boon because I loved the vibe and would love to return for a glass of wine ... but the coffee and chocolate croissant I got there a couple days ago were TASTY!!!
google avatar

Oanh L.

Yelp
5 stars for the Coffee but 2 stars for the service. The coffee is great and probably the best in town but the service is very bad that it is not worth going to. I was in the store early Sat morning with only one other customer. No greeting from the staff and the young lady had an attitude. I brought 4 coffees and tipped $5 for them. One of the lattes was supposed to be a Shaw she had an attitude about it and told me it was my mistake. She was not happy about it.. I apologized and told her I do not mind paying the difference for it. She grabbed my coffee and added 2 pumps of the vanilla and toppings for it.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Nice new coffee shop in Shaw, with a pretty large interior and plenty of patio seats. The coffee is pretty good, shaw latte was tasty and not overly sweet, service was very friendly, the mango smoothie was delicious, and the cookie was good too (although I didn't receive the correct cookie). We'll be back to try more!
google avatar

Suzie H.

Yelp
I had a refreshing mango smoothie that was pleasant. Glad to see this new establishment doing well during Covid.

Danielle P.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and had wanted to check it out. I was finally going to after a run, but they were super rude and wouldn't let me use the bathroom before I ordered. There are so many actually great, hospitable places nearby for coffee. Not going to bother with this rude one again.
google avatar

Abigail K.

Yelp
I can't believe how long it's taken me to review this place! This is my neighborhood coffee shop and I really love it. It's a great place to do work, with free wifi and plenty of seating inside and outside. It's also a good environment to catch up with some friends. I've gotten the croissants, brownie, smoothies, and various lattes with no disappointment!
google avatar

Jamari J.

Yelp
great atmosphere, plenty of (socially distanced) seating inside and out, and enough space to get a lot of work done. food is delicious (try the salmon quiche! very light snd tasty) and the strawberry smoothie! friendly, helpful staff as well!
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
Perfect cappuccino with a delicious huge almond croissant, warmed up, amazing! The staff is attentive and fun. Outdoor tables in spacious patio are all sanitized often. Indoor seating with cool wall murals offers a covid safe space with a few customers lounging on their laptops. Great cafe vibe!

Alexis F.

Yelp
Stumbled on this coffee shop when I took my dog to the nearby dog park. It's adorable! I really enjoyed the atmosphere and will be coming back to sit at the outside patio with my dog. The green chili burrito was delicious and I loved the iced shaw latte! The staff seemed very busy handling a Saturday morning buzz, but I found them to be very nice and welcoming.
google avatar

Erin K.

Yelp
Stopped in for a post-dinner latte and could not be more pleased. Both our drinks were delicious and we enjoyed them at an outdoor table. Love the Shaw Latte!
