The Rodney Hotel | Best places to stay in Bristol

"Expect old-fashioned hospitality at The Rodney, a Georgian mansion of honey-hued stone located in the heart of Clifton Village and one of Bristol’s smartest addresses. The simple bedrooms at the Rodney are perhaps the least exciting bit of your stay; small but clean and modern, with bright cushions and all mod cons. Feel like a spot of supper closer to home one night? The Rodney also has its own restaurant, Number 4, downstairs in a rather gorgeous Georgian dining room, plus a pretty walled garden ideal for afternoon tea. While this is a peaceful place to lay your head, you can still dip into city life – your next-door neighbours include wine bars, smart bakeries, cosy pubs, and some of the best of Bristol’s boutiques and delis. Yelp
Located in the so called, most exciting area of Bristol, namely, the Clifton, this place has got a stupendous location. But, I am afraid, that's all they have. The hotel has got steep stairs and to add to your misery, there is no elevator. You have to pay for wi-fi, which seems to be an obsolete practice in circa 2014, planet Earth. I had a meeting in Clifton, and on my way back, felt a little thirst and hunger. So, I entered the hotel and asked the receptionist, the location of the bar. He reacted in such a manner, as if I just have committed a heinous crime. Instead of showing me the way, which is supposedly what, he gets paid for, he started interrogating me, whether I am a guest of not, where I am coming from, and such. I tried to be polite, answered that I am not a guest. Then, he started scanning me, as if, this is a guests only place. I started loosing my cool, I asked where is the bar again. He was probably too tired, to speak, he pointed me the way. I enter. The bar is small. Only Guinness and Stella are on draught (WHAT????) The food was nothing special. They boast of a secret garden, but there is nothing like that. I mean, you don't call that a garden. The tables are surprisingly small. To add up to the trouble, parking outside is limited only to 10 spaces! The toilet was unclean. The outside tables and chairs were dripping wet. The two stars is only for the staff ( excluding the Receptionist), who were pleasant. This is overlooking the fact, that the lady in the bar, who served me, did not know how to serve a Stella. The Manager was just beside and she wasn't even bothered to show her how to serve a beer, for which they are charging a £4.50. Ah, they don't give you a receipt, until and unless, you ask for one, and even if they do, that's probably not yours, as I received someone else's instead of mine! Not, at all, value for anything, leave aside, money. And yes, I am not going back.

Yelp
Stayed at this hotel as part of an all in stag do weekend - so that is the sort of place it is, drunken, small rooms, not that nice really, I would go again if on a stag do type event, but not really anything else. Average, but good location for Clifton and bristol itself.

Yelp
Generally as bland as they come. The 'secret' garden is nothing special, and looks especially ignored compared to the beautiful Georgian ambience of Clifton. My room was smelly (stayed there for a week and the musk didn't dissipate) and the toilet barely worked. The interior is just ugly, bad paint, bad carpet, etc- really without any of the charm that's being advertised. You could feel the springs right through the beds. The single room beds were extremely tiny, as was the TV. They charge for wireless and even then you have to enter a new password almost every other day and every time you log in, which is just tedious. And my room became really warm and humid in August making it difficult to sleep at night. On a positive note, there is real coffee and tea in your room along with cafetiere. And they send over a complimentary newspaper. The best part by far is that you can get paid access to a very nice gym 10 minutes away (but really that's a compliment for the gym not the hotel).

Yelp
I chose the hotel due to the location and proximity to business and my son's place of work. Yet, I would not recommend it to anyone, Upon arrival I checked in and was taken to my single room. it was located right next to the bar and the ladies room. In addition, after the young girl left me I heard a deafening low tone note like that of a steam ship. I called reception and was told that my room was also next to the boiler room. I requested to be moved. They took me downstairs to the basement. Here the put me in a double room next to the men's toilet. There were men coming and going all night and in addition to that the sink in the bathroom would not drain as the stopper was stuck in a closed position. The next morning I was woke to be told i had to move next door to a single room. That was room 3. They helped me move. When I first entered the room there was a horrid rancid smell. The reception assured me it must be from the cleaning components. So I opened the window to air the room. They didn't have other single rooms available so this was my last move. The next two mornings and on into the evening there was loud Jazz playing above me from 7 am and men using the toilet and talking in the hall next to my room. I told them at checkout of my complaint and it didn't phrase them. I am an avid traveller and write both good and bad reviews depending on the service and accommodation. Parking was also high and could not be reserved. They only have a few spots avaialble.
