14 Best Hotels in Philadelphia

"It's easy enough to spot Fitler Club. Stationed on the banks of the Schuylkill, between the Chestnut and Market Street bridges, the hulking concrete and glass fortress sits catty-corner from Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, almost in I-76's crosshairs. What's harder, though, is figuring out how to get in, through somewhat hidden front- and back doors. Once inside, the place has a swank, subtle charm, with the feel of an urban country club for the city's go-getter in-crowd. It's the first outpost of a lifestyle concept dreamed up by founder David Gutstadt. Gutstadt, who previously led fitness brand Equinox's hotel strategy, has clearly taken some of his alma mater's fitness fanaticism to heart in creating Fitler Club; see Field House, Fitler's 25,000-square-foot exercise area, and one of its most impressive selling points. He clearly understands what high-paying members expect from their amenities, and he's made sure that Fitler Club delivers: few to no wait times for machines, plenty of staff support in the form of trainers and instructors, F&B led by Philly hometown boy Marc Vetri, and an absolutely smashing cocktail program. The membership selection process is opaque at best, but the general idea is to bring the area's movers and shakers together under one well-designed roof: athletes, doctors, investors, and the like. Fortunately, Fitler's 14 hotel rooms are open to the public, so you won't be subjected to that—it just means you might be doing Pilates next to someone who can advance your career." - Regan Stephens, Katie James Watkinson

The Rooms at Fitler Club

"What was your first impression? Guide us through. It's easy enough to spot Fitler Club. Stationed on the banks of the Schuylkill, between the Chestnut and Market Street bridges, the hulking concrete and glass fortress sits catty-corner from Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, almost in I-76's crosshairs. What's harder, though, is figuring out how to get in. Maybe that seems reasonable for a members-only club, where it's cool to have to search for the secret door; but after driving to Philly in the rain, and then having my GPS direct me down a dark alleyway with no discernible signage, it seemed a little less, well, fun. There also may be no valet or doorman out back, which isn't necessarily ridiculous, since Fitler primarily functions as a members-club with regulars who have biometric access and don't need to be buzzed in and assisted with bags.  But I digress. Once inside, the place has a swank, subtle charm, with the feel of an urban country club for the city's go-getter in-crowd. Just past the reception desk, there's a spacious dining room filled with modular tables and chairs, a smart mix of creamy marble and green velvet. There's the splashy bar and lounge, too, which members and hotel guests alike hit for pre-dinner drinks before going out on the town, or circle back to for some dancing and a post-meal nightcap. I was drawn towards the dining room, which has expansive views across the river—until my attention was captured by a Damien Hirst piece hanging next to the bar, which is on loan, I'd later learn, from one of the club's investors. Pretty neat, all around. What's the backstory on this place? This is the first outpost of a lifestyle concept dreamed up by founder David Gutstadt. He clearly understands what high-paying members expect from their amenities, and he's made sure that Fitler Club delivers: few to no wait times for machines, plenty of staff support in the form of trainers and instructors, F&B led by hometown Philly  boy Marc Vetri, an absolutely smashing cocktail program. The membership selection process is opaque at best, but the general idea is to bring the area's movers and shakers together under one well-designed roof: athletes, doctors, investors, and the like. Fortunately, Fitler's 14 hotel rooms are open to the public, so you won't be subjected to that—it just means you might be doing Pilates next to someone who can advance your career. Tell us about your digs.I was in room six, about midway down a hallway, which was perfect. (I'm pretty noise-sensitive, and I hate being near doorways or elevators.) The room was sleek, a sort of high-end take on a locker room, which felt in keeping with the property's emphasis on fitness: locker-like doors on the nightstands and cabinets, and a graphic, black-and-white graph-print comforter. The modular couch looked cool, though it was pretty uncomfortable, and didn't have any designated reading light—but the bed and comforter were among the most (if not the most) comfortable I've ever slept in. The bathroom products smelled divine, and I loved the rainfall shower. (And, if it were somehow possible, I would've loved to have stolen the pale marble sink, which dipped in just a little, for my own home.) The HVAC was also incredibly receptive and strong, which I appreciate as someone who likes to sleep in a chillier room—and which I often find lacking in hotels. The hotel receives an honorable nod for the excellent espresso/cappuccino/americano maker that sits in the hallway outside the guest rooms; there's really nothing better than gratis coffee that doesn't taste like nutty dirt. How was the service?I found the staff to be totally charming, if a little out of their depth, particularly when it came to the hotel component. It's understandable, given that the majority of their time and energy is spent catering to Fitler's 2,700 members, who likely have a very different set of requests than hotel guests. To wit: the bag debacle. On schlepping my stuff into the hotel, no one at either of the reception desks (I saw two) offered to take them, or help me carry them, which you'd absolutely expect at a hotel at this price point; and on check-out, I somehow wasn't offered a copy of my bill. Instead, I got into the elevator, had that realization, then went back and asked for it. Small things like that—a few key elements of the anticipatory, rather than reactive service you'd receive from a high-caliber establishment are, notably, still missing. What's the scoop on the F&B?Initially, chef Kevin Sbraga had signed up to lead Fitler Club's F&B, though prior to its opening, the responsibility shifted to chef Marc Vetri, whose eponymous restaurant regularly turns up on Philly's "Best of" lists. I'm agnostic about this change—but I will say that Vetri has worked up a mean brunch and lunch menu (there's dinner, too, though I didn't stay at Fitler long enough to test it out.) I ate brunch in the dining room on the one day that I woke up at the hotel, and treated myself to an excellent lobster burrata omelet—the lobster was succulent and sweet, and the burrata creamy (if a little watery)—and an avocado toast. The latter didn't quite impress me—the avocado smear tasted a little pre-packaged—but the thick, multigrain toast it sat on was crunchy and complex in flavor. There was also a little pastry and Bloody Mary bar at the back; I treated myself to a few bites from the former, and can happily report that the cinnamon-raisin bun checks out. I'd come here for a relaxed brunch, certainly, or for a pre-dinner drink; my Green Hornet, a subtle tequila-and-egg-white concoction, from the night prior, was perfectly balanced. What are the other guests like?I couldn't really tell the other hotel guests apart from club members—it's not like they went around wearing pins. But as far as Fitler members go, think male and female variations on Kevin Plank: fit, rich, authoritative, determined, interested in exercise and making deals. What's the surrounding neighborhood like?At first, I was skeptical of Fitler's location, right by the Market Street bridge. Okay, yes, sure: It's convenient if you're going to and from the train station, but that's certainly not the case if you're interested in seeing—or experiencing—the cobblestoned charm of Society Hill. Fortunately, it's really only about a 10-minute walk from Rittenhouse Square. (Bonus points: behind it, across the street, sits the Mütter Museum. You can walk to most things in Center City in about 20 minutes; and because of its prime location along Market Street, a main drag, Ubers are nearby and numerous. Other features you liked? There's a cushy screening room in the club, which is great for watching Eagles games with fellow Philly fanatics. There's also a two-lane bowling alley, equipped with its own bar, which I wish I'd had the insight to check out on the night I stayed over. Oh, and shout-out to my talented masseuse, Jenny, who gave me a terrifically relaxing 50-minute massage (and whose very presence felt calming). What changes would you make, if any?As I mentioned, I'd station a doorman near the back entrance to let guests in, and help them with bags. I'd also put a thicker door or divider between the pool area, where kids are running around and making noise (as kids are wont to do) from the spa. I had something of a tough time relaxing, despite my wonderful masseuse, because I could hear kids shrieking nearby." - Betsy Blumenthal

Yelp
Love this place. With the exception of one employee but def coming back to visit Philly. Booked this hotel for my bf's birthday due to its charm and amenities that align with our lifestyle. Was excited for the gym and the golf simulator besides its gorgeous decor. The loft suite was truly everything we needed for the stay. Extremely comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. The soak in tub was really a treat. We booked another night because we were so in love with the space. The loft suite wasn't available so we booked the king size bed/room. It was just as good as the loft suite in my opinion. The art all throughout the facility seem to have been hand-picked and curated very well. I noticed some familiar artwork. There is a dj at the bar area on certain days which i thought was cool especially if we didnt want to leave the hotel. The gym and locker room was what i would actually come back for. They offer a membership that caters to gym goers as well. The golf simulator looks like it hasn't been taken care of too well but still enjoyed hitting a few balls. The levels are a little bit confusing so I would brief yourself on what exactly you would like to do there and what level it is on. Their merch collab with lululemon was cute. Wish they had more of my size but definitely something I would've purchased. Looking forward to my next visit here.

Yelp
This review is only for the Lobster Broil- While this was an amazing meal, I thought it would be bigger with more entrees. I thought it would be a side of sausage and potatoes (it was in small quantity on the lobster plate). The pull apart bread was freshly made and very tasty. The andouille sausage was so spicy which was amazing. The potatoes were average but it was cool that there were so many colors. The corn on the cob was the full amount and was perfect. They left the butter on the side which was nice. The lobster was nicely cut which was a surprise. It was nice not to struggle with using the tool to open up to get the meaty parts. The lobster was in a really nice, tasty, white sauce. I do feel like half the meat in the lobster couldn't be reached since the head of the lobster wasn't cut. The Boston crème pie was the best thing of the meal. Pastry chef, Joyce Park, is so good. They gave a big slice for 2 to share. The chocolate top was delicious (I think it was dark chocolate). The middle layer was the best part! I can't even describe how good it was.

Yelp
Was expecting Chef's table but instead were directed to the dining room. Chef's table would have had a great view of the Chef preparing the meal. The waiter came and asked us for our drinks order. Me, not knowing wine except not liking reds, was offered a glass of white wine that would clear my palette before tasting the first course. The excellent choice really impressed me on the waiter's skill in selecting wines based on customers preferences. The first course was Australian Wagyu Tartare. The meat tasted rare but not in a disgusting way. Mixed with the sunchoke, mustard, and turnips, it was low key yet refined. Every bite was a delight. The second course was the American Wagyu Sukiyaki, a mix of the waygu and angus cows as explained by our chef. It was served with a soy sauce reduction that made dipping the waygu into it and eating it so savory. The garnishes seemed to get into the way of dish after the meat was eaten. Not sure if it was meant to be eaten together. The third course was A5 Japanese Wagyu, the closest to the fames kobe meats. It was juicy and succulent and eating thin strips of it brought joy to my mouth. The lemon poset was slightly overpowering but overall great

Yelp
Member for over a year. It's not "private club" quality, feels like an upscale airport lounge wanting to be a country club. $500/mo. Management is poor, and impossible to speak with (and the front-line staff will even say this outright). $500/mo. Things are often broken. Locker room sucks. Sauna and steam room are mediocre at best. $500/mo. Food is good, but not SUPERB, yet the prices are SUPER high. Make it SUPERB, worth the price and beyond. For $500/mo I want quality I cannot get next-door for the same price or cheaper. There are constant "reserved" spaces every day, so maybe the balcony is off limits, or the bowling, half the bar space/lounge. FOCUS ON YOUR MEMBERSHIP. $500/mo. All for like $500/mo. GET GOOD. FOCUS ON YOUR MEMBERSHIP. BE NICE TO YOUR MEMBERS. ADD A BIKE ROOM, ADD LARGE LOCKERS ALONG EMPTY WALLS IN THE GYM. ADD WATER FOUNTAINS IN THE LOCKER ROOM, the melting water is GROSS. YOU NEED NEW MANAGEMENT THAT GIVES A **** ABOUT MEMBERS PAYING $500/mo.!

Yelp
The Fitler club provides great venues and service for events. My company frequents the Fitler club for happy hours and meetings and I've always had a delightful time. The staff is very polite, especially when you enter in the wrong way and get lost. Someone is always willing to help bring you to the right location. I've had a meeting in the ballroom which is connected to a backyard garden. I think this is where weddings are usually held. But it makes a great space for corporate meetings as well.Breakfast and lunch was also provided. Breakfast consisted of eggs, bagels, pastries and turkey sausage. I had a peach pastry and it was delicious! I think they used star anise to flavor the peach filling. Lunch we had potatoes, steak, salad, grain salad, and a medley of sandwiches. The space was large enough for my company to mingle but not feel empty. When we did have meetings in the ballroom, you could hear the kitchen staff blast their music. It was sorta comic relief to all day meetings. The trophy room is the most enjoyable! I've ordered too many drinks there. The bartenders are always polite when making your drink. I've never seen a bartender look annoyed and they make the drinks is care. The best dirty martini I've ever had was at the filter club. The first Negroni I've had was at the fitler club and the bartender told me to let the ice dilute it a little and it made the Negroni delicious. The trophy room has bowling alleys, arcade games, and hoops on the first floor. There was also a table set up with Mediterranean snacks like hummus, kebabs, pita sandwiches etc. the second floor is where the pool table, ping pong, connect 4 are located. Having a ping pong table on the second floor is risky lol the ball kept falling down to the first floor. There's also a photo booth that we couldn't figure out the password to. The trophy room has old school leather furniture giving it an old money American vibe! I've always been impressed with the filter club. The staff works so hard there! The club is truly amazing and worth it.

Yelp
I was a guest along with 2 others on Friday night at Fitler Club for an event. When I approached the bar I was met with an attitude from Samantha your manager. Her demeanor was extremely rude and it made me feel uncomfortable. This wasn't my first time here, but it was for my boyfriend who's in the restaurant industry, and he couldn't understand the attitude as well. Safe to say we wouldn't return there again. I was very delighted to show him the place because I was interested in a membership but to be profiled soon as I walk into a place followed by her level of hospitality is not something I would want to be apart of. The fellow bartenders were very nice with amazing energy I must add. Please give Samantha some more training when dealing with customers because she literally pushed this one away.

Yelp
Beautiful space and hip concept. First time I visited I was most impressed by the bowling alley and movie theater. This said, the food has changed since it first opened. In my opinion, if the dining is not well above average, the incentive to join declines.

Yelp
A club designed to best serve work from home members. Extremely limited fitness classes, both in size and in frequency. If you are a WFH member it's the best deal in town. If you're not, you'll be subsidizing WFH members use of the space and amenities and will be left wondering why you didn't just wait to join Equinox when it opens in the coming months. Save yourself the non refundable $2,200 and invest your time and money elsewhere.

Yelp
An incredible place with great service. Stayed for a weekend & used their facilities for meetings & a social event. Great service & location. Vegetarian & vegan friendly.

Yelp
used the gym and there was sweat all over the machines. The food is subpar and the service is being horrible. I've caught multiple staff showing COVID symptoms but they are still tending to my food and drinks

Yelp
Our friends have a membership and brought us to the block party day! We had an amazing time with amazing food. We hope to be invited next year. The bathrooms are immaculate and modern. I've always enjoyed the Fitler club every time I have visited

Janice M.

Yelp
This club is not what it claims to be, " a place for young professionals to net work " This is a over priced gym. There was not 1 "net working " event. When I had a problem with my membership I was directed to 4 different team members before I was given a answer. You think they would value the members who keep the "over priced gym " a float. I would recommend joining planet fitness over this "club".
