This is a classic pub that we hangout with friends on a Friday night. The dart is great to enjoy. Most of the time, the place is very crowded and you might need to wait in the line. But like any great place, this is normal and it is worth waiting a bit to get our drinks. It is location wise very close to the other pubs and clubs so you can have your first drinks here then jump somewhere near. Happy to know this amazing pub💯

Peter Scherer

Google
This is a very authentic and nice American bar. You will find there is anything you need. Outside sitting is nicely in the shadow or even if you like it in the sun. They have a good variety of different beers.

Rene Levesque

Google
Fun spot for trivia, but the crowd management could use serious improvement. We’ve had a table reserved each week, yet the same group keeps trying to crowd in—even after being told no multiple times. Last time, they claimed to be a party of 2, then showed up 7 deep and forced us into the corner. It’s frustrating, and it happens often. People also don’t hesitate to sneak looks at other teams’ answers, which takes the fun out of it. The venue would really benefit from more small tables to accommodate the turnout and avoid these situations. That said, the service is excellent—Marco is always friendly and on top of everything. The deviled eggs and masala tots are especially worth ordering.

W Dawood

Google
Fish sandwich was epic today! Added some cheese so it was filet o fish style. The fish was golden brown on the outside and flaky inside. The tots were crispy and the tarter sauce was tangy and creamy. There was even a special sauce that had boots on bc it was kicking so much ass 😂

Google
Visiting from San Diego and this place kills it. The staff is available to answer questions and if you are new to the area they'll tell you what's around the area. Regarding food, I had the pub burger and it was good. The patty was not dry and the fries were thick cut. I'll definitely be back when I visit the area again. Ps: They have an excellent selection of draft beers.

Alicia Ng

Google
people are always cheating at trivia! and being pushy about sharing tables (which we reserve the previous week) - the same group told me and my friends 6 times to "scooch over" and were told no repeatedly until my friend caved when they told us that they were a party of 2 (7 of them ended up at our table, and tried to push us even further into the corner). this happens every week and people look at our answers. i think there needs to be more (smaller) tables to accommodate the number of people here. marco is the best tho so 5 stars for service. devilled eggs and masala tots are worth getting.

Google
Maybe the best classic pub in Palo Alto, generally full of tech-geeks and/or Stanford affiliates. Great place to meet friends or have informal meetings - around holidays, can be a little bit overcrowded.

Rohit Nallapeta

Google
This place is a gem! It's a great dive bar perfect for socializing, playing dart games, and hosting startup meetups. A fun spot to hang out with friends. The best part? It lives up to its name by offering a fantastic selection of beverages, from beer to whisky. Cheers to a good time! 🍻 .

Yelp
There aren't enough nice dives in Palo Alto, so I am so grateful this place has stuck around! Its got a nice outdoor section as well as some games on the inside, which is great. Though I have only ever had their appetizers, I've heard good things about their food, so need to try!
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
I really want to like this place, I really do! It's just so mid! In the most mid way possible. The fact they serve beer and liquor is amazing. The fact that 99.9 % of the people here are Stanford alumni or currently attending is so very depressing and limiting to the kinds of people you will meet. It's just not that great and not that bad :/ Service is solid ambiance/ people watching is sensational, the people are so very boring.....
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Cute dive bar feel. Mt friend and I came here because it was one of a dee that served food, but options were limited as it was late. It's standard bar food so don't have high expectations. The drinks were on point and service was good for how busy it got

Adrian L.

Yelp
Good drink selection, food, and pricing for a bar in Palo Alto. Definitely going back again
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
An institution in downtown Palo Alto. Service is friendly and pleasant. Food is serviceable with nothing that stands out. Lots of tables inside and out. Fills up on Stanford football game days. Great beer selection!

Robert C.

Yelp
It's great in every way. Good vibe, solid pub food, and great folks behind the bar. A fun place to hang with friends and play some darts
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
The least pretentious bar in downtown Palo Alto? Perhaps. Do they have Guinness on tap and fish and chips? Oh yeah. And great looking cheese quesadillas (the guy next to me had them), and every other bar menu type food. There's a lot to look at when you're seated at the bar. They have these little doors in the wall that hide various bar stuff. I'd love to know how the place evolved over time. Whenever I've gone, there were groups of friends-regulars, but I always felt welcomed.
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
The rose and crown is kind of a dive bar with good outdoor seating. I also liked how it had darts. We got a couple of drinks here and one of the cups was dirty hence the poor stars. I like how they have lots of different craft beers here though so that was a plus. It looks like they have good boil maker specials, which is nice. I would come back if they had cleaner cups.

J M.

Yelp
Good beer. But pissed. Saw they had some specials on tap. Drove 30 minutes to get there. But they were closed for private party. They should have mentioned on the web that they were closed. 30 minutes to get there. 5 to find parking. 5 to walk to the business and find out private buy out was in process. 30 more to get home. It's fine to do private but outs; uncool not to mention on web that you'll not be open during normal business hours

Kyle D.

Yelp
Good beers, pretty nice staff, and a good group of regulars. Reading the reviews, I expected the food to be mid at best, but I've actually been pleasantly surprised. Maybe my expectations were just appropriately calibrated by the negative reviews, but I thought the fish and chips were good; not mind blowing, but definitely enjoyable. The place could use a deep cleaning and some general TLC, but overall worth checking out.
google avatar

Garrett C.

Yelp
Food was good, beer options were great. The space is small but a group of six or so should be able to find a table if it's not too busy.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
I am very glad that the Rose & Crown exists. They serve great beer (5/5) and prices are reasonable. They have clearly put in a good deal of effort in achieving the aesthetic of an English pub. Unfortunately, I cannot help but feel that it is missing some soul. Why? Not entirely sure, but perhaps it is due to a paucity of ebullient beer-bellied men who are already several beers deep in the late afternoon. Most of the clientele would not look out of place at a wine bar. Does this area not have enough beer lovers for a truly good pub? Finally, I unfortunately have to drop another star from 4/5 to 3/5 because I ate some truly bad buffalo wings here: drowning in sourness and rubbery in texture.
google avatar

Joy L.

Yelp
I love this place. It is very easy to have a focused conversation in the outdoor tables. It is not too crowded but has a decent number of people. It is also not too cold because the tables are between two buildings. There is also a parking lot nearby so parking is not at the place closes at 1 AM.
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
Would really appreciate if y'all offered rosé wine We have a 10-15 person friend group, live within walking distance, and we never go here because we like rosé and it's never offered!! Their food is quite good though. Would appreciate if there was some music, since it would greatly add to the ambiance.
google avatar

Ben J.

Yelp
Meh. It's a dive bar. Beer was really good, service was average and food (1 piece fish and chips) was definitely off/undercooked.

Hanna W.

Yelp
100% your typical dive bar- not a bad thing! Drinks are great and we love to come and play darts.
google avatar

kate s.

Yelp
Get a bartender who's not sooooo rude. Blah. If you offer mixed drinks you should serve them. She wouldn't even say a suggestion for a lagger???? I'm very reasonable just don't be rude.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Chill bar in downtown Palo Alto around some other bars & restaurants. I heard about this bar from a bartender at a nearby restaurant a month ago and haven't been back in Palo Alto since then. The bartender said "it's a cool dive bar." Did not disappoint one bit. Came here to chill while waiting for a friend and enjoyed the vibe. Will come back again next time I'm in town. Beer for happy hour is $8 perfect. If your ever in Palo Alto i would recommend to stop in.

Brad M.

Yelp
Drinks were good, but the added a "cost of living surcharge". There was no sign as required by state law. Restaurants need to incorporate these fees into the menu; it's the cost of doing business.
google avatar

Ian S.

Yelp
We really enjoyed it. Marty our shepherd hung out on the patio and we enjoyed the fish and chips!
google avatar

Orest S.

Yelp
It's a kinda English pub, nice atmosphere of an old pub. There's a patio outside. No good selection of IPA, the one they had was a russian hill and this is not a good brand naming these days.
google avatar

Yvonne L.

Yelp
I hadn't been here for decades. It's still the same, right down to the dart boards. One new addition is the outdoor patio area, which was nice, but unfortunately for us, filled. I enjoyed the fish and chips. I was there in the late afternoon, and the staff seemed friendly enough, but the pub was not particularly busy.

Jose L.

Yelp
Nice place to hang out. It's an old English style pub. The people seem to be cool and friendly. I met a few friends there for a drink.
google avatar

Anivesh B.

Yelp
Typical hole-in-the-wall divey bar with English influence. They have a lot of team scarves on the walls which is a nice sight if you are a soccer fan. Drinks: sizable beer collection, although a bit pricey but that's what I'd expect when in Palo Alto. Vibe: crowd is mostly Stanford, they have a couple dart boards and a song machine if you want to do anything other than chugging some beer. 7/10 would go back again!
google avatar

Erol I.

Yelp
It's just a cool little beer house. I hope this place lasts for ever. It doesn't offer much. The staff is great and attentive. The suds are cold. It is what it wants to be.

K L.

Yelp
Exactly what I was looking for on a recent visit- dive bar with TVs to watch football and Pliny the Elder on tap!

Clara L.

Yelp
Sat down at the bar with my boyfriend and was ignored by the bartender. I was thinking they were just busy until they started chatting up and getting orders from other people that came after us. Can't comment on the selection of beers or whatever since we were never acknowledged. Overall, vibes were unfriendly and cold, not sure why the bartender would pick and choose who to serve and who to ignore, lol.

W C.

Yelp
Recently, my girlfriend and I visited the establishment, and to our disappointment, the bartender completely neglected to acknowledge our presence. We were left waiting for an uncomfortably long period, approximately 5 to 10 minutes, while feeling ignored. Interestingly, a group of individuals arrived after us, and they were warmly greeted and promptly served whatever they requested. This stark contrast made us feel rather foolish, as if we were being treated as outsiders in an unwelcoming environment, suggesting that familiarity with the place is a prerequisite for receiving proper hospitality. clowns‍.
google avatar

Renata K.

Yelp
Food is creative. Experience is good. Drinks are pre made so don't expect modifications. Veggie dishes are all pre-sautéed and very greasy. French toast was delicious - but what wouldn't be delicious when it's fried with cream and syrup. I may have high standards but I can see why the experience is what people come for but I consider this a one time visit. Was ok but not going back.
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
In my experience, the Rose and Crown is a perfect storm of high prices, bad hygiene, and inconsistent beer. Pricing: The lowest-grade beers on the menu will run you $5-7 for a pint. For the fancier beers that they advertise, expect $9-13 per serving, before tip. Quality: The prices would be fine if they actually served the beers they advertise. On multiple times I have ordered two beers that I am very familiar with, Piraat and Weihenstephan, and all times I was served beer that was clearly a generic, lower-quality beer that they probably had on tap. Hygiene: They absolutely cannot charge prices this high while having a bathroom with urine on the floor and walls. To me, the comically dirty facilities, and deliberate serving of cheaper beers suggest that the proprietors have disdain for their customers.
google avatar

Anjali K.

Yelp
A casual local pub, very no frills but still super crowded on a Friday night and has both indoor and outdoor seating. I got the mule which was decent so I got it again. Decent prices too, and fast service. Had a great time playing darts ($5).

Otto P.

Yelp
Very rude staff, really ruins the experience. They made a point to come out and yell at us for rearranging tables, will not be visiting again.

Jim B.

Yelp
Best place for cheap good beer list in PA. Nice service. Food is fine for what it is. Curry fries nice.
google avatar

Beatrice W.

Yelp
I've been here a few times now and never written a review, so why not finally do so while we're all SIP? What's great about this place is that you don't feel like you're in Palo Alto. It was recommended to me by two different people as the place to grab a beer in Palo Alto. They have a good draft list, from imports to local craft beer. Don't expect to get tasters here - it's more of a pub/dive bar than a craft brewery. They also serve up delicious fish n chips ($12 for 2 pc, and I think it's a couple bucks more or less if you want 3pc or 1pc) and the portion size is humongous. On a nice day they have a small alleyway patio when you can enjoy your beer with some fresh air.

Yelp
This is a funky Hipster bar. How can it be when it's an Ole English Pub? Here's how From the outside it's appearance is legit Ole English Pub at least from what I remember from The Worlds End and Doctor Who. Immediately to the left is the loo. NOTE: The door doesn't close very well. Make sure to lock it tight. The bar is to the left and it hooks to the left further down. There are a couple of tables on the right side. A door that leads to a alley way with unused kegs that function as bar stools and some well traveled picnic tables. If you stay inside follow these simple rules 1. The bartender is not Samuel L Jackson even though the appearance and grouch level are on par. 2. If you see a Big 5 Ad on the bar, leave it. Don't touch it or Nick Fury will unleash the Avengers on your ass 3. If the sign says, " Don't stand here to place your order " by golly don't stand there. If you adhere to these rules, you'll make it at least until midnight unless one of the drunk hipsters hits you with a dart. The TV is on but there's no volume and God forbid one of the hipsters decides to play Despacito over and over again, you may want to be hit in the eye with a dart. There's another bartender but she was pretty busy taking beer orders. Onto the beers. There's all the usual suspects on draft and some IPAs as well as some interesting others. The Peanut Butter blah blah blah was pretty good. My Attempt to Channel my inner Burt Reynolds went out like a busted carburetor on a 77 Trans Am when I ordered the Eastbound and Brown. I would have been better served with a frost mug of Bandit's brew followed by Sheriff's backwater draft. In the end, it's kinda of a cool place especially for all the crazy scenery. Enjoy and keep your filthy hands off the Big 5 ad. Those sneakers are mine.

Charlie M.

Yelp
First time coming in to this bar and the bartender told our group to "move the fxxx over" then he served other people that came in after us. Never in my life have I ever experience such a thing. All I can say is that I'm never going back.

Yelp
Decided to hold a UYE here last night for their Trivia night and woah.. crazy busy! Met up with a few other Yelpers and shame on me for turning up late (doh) Thanx to Rodney H for grabbing us a table for the evening. Next UYE I promise to be a little more organized! Anyhow.. part of my lateness was due to the parking situation in Palo Alto which is difficult at the best of times but Tuesday night it seemed just as busy, if not busier than a Saturday so keep this in mind if you plan to come by. The Trivia night start at 8pm and by this time it really is standing room only as the place is so small. Bar staff were nice and they have a decent selection of Beers, typical British ones being Old Speckled Hen and Fullers. They even have Blackthorn Cider. Now that takes me back. Restroom needs some attention as there is only one for each gender and isn't the cleanest and they also have a small beer garden which I could imagine would be nice in Summer. The menu is typical Pub fare - Burgers, Fish and Chips (Guinness batter), Banger's and Mash, Shepherds Pie ect. Of which I didn't order from while there but a couple of other Yelpers did. The ''Chips'' looked good and probably the closest to Chips I have seen in any place that calls themselves British here. The picture I was shown the Banger's and Mash.. well, I'll keep my thoughts on that to myself. There is also a small Beer Garden which gets packed on the busier evenings and is dog friendly so you don't have to leave your pooch at home. *Trivia night details* Starts at 8pm and finishes around 10pm Groups of 4 or less to be in with a chance of winning prizes. Otherwise groups with 4+ can just play for fun. 3.5 stars rounded up.

Jessica D.

Yelp
Pros: - good beer selection - deviled eggs 2$ which helps if you don't want a full meal but want to sit down for a drink - QR code with full menu Room for improvement: - more small plates like the deviled eggs option Vibe: - English pub style bar
google avatar

Yelp
Seems like a solid place based on my one visit! They have a good tap list, bartenders are friendly and responsive when you're needing a drink, and the place was buzzing but not too busy for a Friday evening in Palo Alto (at least at 6:30). They also have a nice patio on the side (smoking allowed), and dart boards inside. Would come again!
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
I walked up and was about to enter the building with a friend of mine. Some guy yelled at us to look at the menu before walking in. No signs telling us to read a menu. This guy was a fat white guy with a beard and bandanna. He was so rude we decided to not even bother. We left and went to the patio instead in Palo Alto. Beautiful nice polite women greeted us here. We spent 300$ and tipped 100$. Rose and crown lost out on money from the rude greeting and terrible vibe given off. I own a bar in the east bay and would never treat my customers like he did
google avatar

Christina N.

Yelp
Cider here was good, so was the shepherds pie. I didnt try the fish and chips, although my friend who tried it said the fries were kinda dry and proceeded to drown it in ketchup. The pub gets a little loud with the crowds, but otherwise the crowd seems fine. I'd probably skip the food and just go for the drinks.
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
Came for a drink with friends. The bartender turned off my song when I had a dollar because I played "don't stop believing". Was not clear we could not play this song. F this place.
google avatar

Willy X.

Yelp
Came here for Tuesday Trivia. The place was absolutely packed. Stanford kids were spilling out of the doors into the blue moon rain and finding refuge by sitting on the floor. I'd avoid it on Tuesdays unless you have won some quiz bowl tournaments in your time. On the food side the fries had a subtle hint of garlic and the samosas are kinda like mini samosas that tasted more like spring rolls with the crispy fried skin. Pretty good!

Tyler C.

Yelp
Great Pub. Fish and Chips were solid, love the fries. Good selection of beers and whiskies. Very friendly vibe and great staff
google avatar

Jack D.

Yelp
I knew this place before I went in. Having spent time as a grad student at a research institution, there is always a bar where tired grad students go to unwind by talking about work in bad lighting. This place is very cliche. It's always full of at least 3 PhD students, it's the opposite of wild, but it's got that charm that you'd expect out of an old, no frills place. Can't speak to the food, but they had cheap PBR, which checks a few boxes. Go here if you're looking to play darts, talk about work in a cliche like old Silicon Valley bar, or you're just looking to see what I'm talking about.
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
Yum, silver bullets and a burger the best. Okay some darts turn on your fav beat on the yukebox!
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
Pretty impressive beer selection, basically like Father's Office for you la kids. They probably serve the same amount of beer overall but the rotate some of the taps so you don't have everything everyday. They get a lot of tough to find euro beers on tap that u can easily get in a bottle but rarely can get draught. I had a Leffe Bruin, Old Speckled Hen, and some Belgian wheat beer. came out to about 20 bucks, but you gotta pay to play. I still gotta try their food!
google avatar

Rahil B.

Yelp
Limited selection of cocktails but the bar has a nice ambience overall. Bartender was really friendly and had some good drink recommendations. Good vibes for a chill hour or two out, has darts for those into some games.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, the burger I had was fantastic, the fries were really good, and our server was awesome, friendly and attentive. My only complaint... the men's room. The hand dryer didn't work, it was dimly lit, and the floor was exceptionally grungy. Someone needs to clean it once in a while. Other than that, the place comes recommended!
