Explore Baltimore - The Rotunda Address: 711 W 40th St, Baltimore, MD 21211 Hours: Closed ⋅ Opens 7 AM Opened: 1971 Owner: Hekemian & Co No. of stores and services: 10 Total retail floor area: 300,000 sq. ft 1800’s Tracing the history of The Rotunda begins in the 1800s when it was part of the Mount Pleasant tract (not to be confused with Mankin’s mansion of the same name). It was home to the Clarke family, who built the buildings on the property known as the “Beaumont Estate.” 1922-1969 Maryland Casualty Company’s business campus included impressive amenities—a clubhouse with a dining room, a 1,500-seat auditorium, landscaped park, gardens, tennis courts and a baseball diamond. The idea was to provide its workers with an idyllic business campus removed from downtown’s hustle-and-bustle. The H-shaped building now known as The Rotunda was the company’s administration building. Its distinctive bell tower and clock was a landmark of the Hampden community. For more than 40 years, Maryland Casualty Company happily existed on its Hampden campus, but by 1969, the Maryland Casualty Company outgrew the four-story Rotunda building. The company considered demolishing the iconic building in 1969 and replacing it with a large office building, but developer Bernard Manekin convinced the company to turn it into retail and office space. 1973-2012 In 1973 after Maryland Casualty vacated the building, the property became Baltimore’s first adaptive reuse project including office space and a shopping mall with 40,000 additional square feet added. The building was christened The Rotunda. The Rotunda opened with several retailers including a Giant grocery store, Rite Aid, Horn and Horn Cafeteria, the Bead, Tomlinson Craft Collection, Gordon’s Booksellers, Rotunda Cinematheque and more. In 2005, the property was sold to New Jersey-based developer Hekemian and Company, which began planning a mixed-use redevelopment project to transform the historic location into an upscale residential and commercial campus. 2013-2016 In 2013, Hekemian broke ground, completing the renovation in 2016, which added new ground-level retail featuring Mom’s Organic Market (its first Baltimore City store), adding the Space Telescope Science Institute as the anchor of The Rotunda’s Offices and opening the ICON Residences at The Rotunda. Today The Rotunda was acquired by MCB Real Estate in late 2022, which began renovating, elevating, and enhancing the historic property, making it the place in Baltimore to live, work and play. I was visiting my son and his family in Baltimore, and he took me to the Mom's market. It was better than organic stores near me in So Cal. I found so many choices for yogurt, vegetarian & vegan alternatives, teas & fresh fruits and vegetables. I wish we had this market where I live. Staff were also very nice and helpful.

The Rotunda is a vibrant, mixed-use shopping and lifestyle center located near Hampden and Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. It’s a perfect local spot offering a blend of healthy eats, essential services, and entertainment. We love stopping by Pure Raw Juice—the Almond Butter Cup smoothie with 20g of protein was delicious and filling. Mom’s Organic Market is great for groceries and quick healthy bites, and the UPS Store makes errands super convenient. The area also includes a variety of food and drink spots like MOD Pizza, Mi & Yu Noodle Bar, and Cinnaholic. A highlight is definitely Warehouse Cinemas, our go-to movie theater. It’s modern, super clean, and offers heated recliners, Dolby sound, and a fun food and drink menu—including a self-pour beer wall. The Rotunda also features wellness services like Club Pilates, CorePower Yoga, and Massage Envy, making it easy to fit in a workout or self-care session. There’s ample parking (free for 4 hours), and the layout is walkable and inviting. Whether you’re grabbing a smoothie, catching a movie, or running errands, The Rotunda is a convenient and enjoyable place to visit.

Businesses are somewhat pricy. They did a phenomenal renovation and some still in progress. There are a lot of doctor offices in addition to a pharmacy, organic food store, and health and beauty stores.

It is good for a date night. It has food, movie theatre, starbucks, etc. It is nice and very new but i think the parking is a bit difficult. Some parking spaces are very strict on the policy. They tow a lot. Hampden main street is not too far from the Rotunda. So it is good to see and explore some antique store down the street. Highly recommend as a place to hang out.

An acquaintance of mine took me out there to show me how much the place had changed since my childhood, when I visited the Horn and Horn Smorgasbord that was there. The Rotunda had been a staple of my life in Baltimore since as long as I can remember, but I hardly recognize it now. I grabbed a coffee from Starbucks, got a glimpse into the Icon Residences and caught a glimpse of a jazz performance quite literally in their backyard. There's a MOM'S Organic Grocery store where the Giant store used to be. It's a very surreal and somewhat unsettling reminder of how much life has changed and how many years have passed.

I love to see a date night movie here. The cost is slightly higher, but it is worth the nice big leather seats. There is a bar for those who like a specialty drink, and there is a different variety in upscaled food. The food is served fresh and hot, too. Bathrooms are clean. A very cozy theater.

Yelp
A beautiful shopping center located near downtown Baltimore... Only been here once, bit loved the layout and structure. It's built with red bricks that give it a nice touch. Decorated for the holidays, visiting at nighttime or during the evening is a pretty neat and eye-caching experience, even if it's to window shop. Has an organic whole foods type of supermarket, Starbucks store, barbershop, restaurants and other typical stores. Mostly expensive stores though (that's why I would only go again for window shopping), bit it's a nice shopping center to visit when nearby.

Yelp
Great shopping center. I come here often to shop at Moms Organic Grocery, Mod Pizza, Pure Raw, Starbucks and Local Fry. Love it here. There are a few other great restaurants and retailers as well. Parking is easy as there is a lot with open parking and also a garage. I especially enjoy the open green turf space here with outdoor seating and pop up shops surrounding the space. They also have electric car charging stations. Located in the Hampden area or Roland Park south, the location is prime. Movie theatre is still closed but hopefully will be restored or repurposed. Great shopping center!

Yelp
We live pretty close to the Rotunda and walk there often for grocery shopping or to pick up takeout from one of the restaurants there! The Rotunda is a pretty large shopping center, with several restaurants (Toki Tako, Mi & Yu Noodle Bar, 18-8 Sushi, MOD Pizza, Moby Dick Kabobs, The Local Fry), a Starbucks, Mom's Organic Market (a small but great organic market that we do quite a bit of our shopping at), lots of gyms/exercise studios (Brick Bodies, Corepower Yoga, Pure Barre), and more (a move theater that is still closed due to COVID, a massage salon, a barber shop, a nail salon). In the center is a fun little park area with a fountain kids play in. There is lots of seating (so it's fun to get takeout from a nearby restaurant and enjoy it outside), and they also host fun events (like movie nights) in the plaza as well. The only down side is that parking can be a little busy depending on the day/time! It's a great shopping area in the Hampden area!

Yelp
My favorite place to hang out when its nice outside while I am at work. Its very peaceful, there are a few restaurants you can try and sit out during the summer months. They have farmers market. They do food truck festivities They have a water sprinkle where kids can go play during the warmer summer months. Its sucks that covid took that away from us!

Yelp
I didn't go here for three years because of the security staff being so rude last time I was there. Today I had to go to the Rotunda and within one minute of being there I was yet again attacked by a terribly rude security officer for literally no reason other than asking where whoever was manning the desk was so I could ask a question as to where I should be going. It must be a job requirement that they only hire miserable aggressive people or something because I cannot explain these people's behavior. Something is seriously wrong with them.

Yelp
Oasis from the world (with Free Parking). Located just off 40th St between Roland Av and Keswick Rd it has everything to be the one-stop shop you need to make. Let's recap. Drug store? Check. Groceries? Check. Pilates? Check. Massage after pilates? Check. Pizza, noodles, Mediterranean, sushi, Vietnamese, coffee, pastries, raw juice, proteins bowls, 100 beers on tap, High-end CineBistro restaurant movie theater to escape to? Check. Check. Check. Private gym after all that? Check. Barbershop/Salon to look good after the gym? Check. Great business. Courteous staff. Safe space. Family-friendly. Well organized. One stop to rule them all.

Yelp
Realizing that duh I should review the shopping center as a whole, since there are a lot of people who still aren't that familiar with it. Such a cool tucked away little spot in the middle of Hampden, that offers almost all the things one would need from a small little center like this. Movies, restaurants, park, free parking, services, gyms...I could go on and on but you get the picture you can find most of it here. I really love the free parking aspect as anyone from Baltimore will tell you how hard it is to find decent parking, especially in Hampden on a busy evening or weekend.

Yelp
Great shopping complex. There is MOMS organic market, apartments that are in a great location, Rite Aid drug store, Starbucks that will offer alcohol with the options already there, and of course Pet Valu.......the best pet store ever. They have live crickets, and work with a variety of rescues and other organizations like the humane society and the Md SPCA to adopt out shelter animals......I love them......(and yes....I work there now....so look out!!) :-)

Yelp
This shopping center is so nice and so new but I just hated it. Instead of putting things in a well planned area. For season reason people would rather squish a million things in a small area with bad traffic patterns and not great signage. I don't know, this place made me crazy. It was just so busy and congested to get in and out was a mess. It's great to have a big parking garage but not convenient for only one of the parking ticket machines to work. I really liked all of the new stores in the shopping center, but having to get through the lot, in a spot and out and about really got my blood pressure going. The types of shops and variety in the center get 5 stars, the layout, parking and signage....maybe a 2. Even with the great stores here, I won't be back. I prefer a better thought out area. If you live here and have to come here for stores that's one thing, but I was rather go to other areas.

Yelp
We did the Cinebistro at the Rotunda. The experience was neat but VERY expensive. We had the "dry aged bone in ribeye" The reason I quoted that is because the ribeye is my all time favorite steak. I've eaten and cooked it a thousand ways. I seriously doubt this was dry aged. Other than that the meal was good. Honestly, I've had better food for half the price but I guess you're paying for the experience. The theatre was a bit cold but the seats were roomy and comfortable. The service was incredibly fast.....almost too fast (had our entire meal within 10 minutes of ordering) BUT that could be because there were only 4 people in the theatre at the 5pm show on a Wednesday night.
