The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa

"Start us off with an overview.Set within Bath’s imposing, sandy-hued Royal Crescent across a pair of Georgian terraced houses, this vast hotel is Grade I listed (i.e. "with heritage so precious it’s illegal to alter it") and grander than grand—it’s sure to blow away anyone unused to the grandeur of historic British architecture at its finest. Ceilings are high and edged with frilly cornicing, walls paneled and home to period portraits with eyes that will follow you around the room. Tall windows offer beautiful views out toward the city of Bath or back over the private gardens behind, home to the Dower House restaurant, The Spa and Bath House, the Garden Villa—and a rather delightful swing. That's a fun feature. Can you give us the backstory on this place? The exteriors here can be traced to the mid-18th-century, when they were built with the intention of being sold off; it was up to the new owners to construct the rest of the building. The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa (parcels 15 and 16), however, only began life as a hotel in the 1970s. A few decades later, in spring 2014, local interior designer Jane Clayton refreshed and resuscitated its Georgian credentials. The crescent also has a literary life: Jane Austen's Persuasion sees characters Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth confirm their relationship status right outside the front door of one of the grand mansions. Swoon. Now, tell us about the rooms—how are they? The Royal Crescent Suite is as magnificent as it should be and is the hotel’s ultimate room—spacious, airy, with a separate lounge and drawing room as well as the bedroom with luxurious, canopied, four-poster bed. The décor and color scheme are not modern by any means (there’s a lot of peach and beige, with original antique furniture laced in throughout), but that’s not why you come here. Tech is adequate—sockets can take a little while to find but the A/C, television, and shower all are easy enough to master. Got it. So, what's the F&B situation? Anything stand out?Scottish executive chef David Campbell has done an impressive job with the menus, weaving his dishes with contemporary, creative flourishes and locally sourced ingredients—the tasting menu at the 3 AA rosette award-winning Dower House restaurant moves seamlessly between the pleasantly sweet-sharp beetroot yogurt foam to a sturdier braised lamb shoulder, served with anchovy tempura and purple basil to give it extra shimmy. Eat outside on a summer’s evening for maximum magical secret garden whimsy, ideally kicking off with a summery Sipsmith gin special. Our only shock during dinner was that the pianist was playing an electric keyboard rather than a more refined actual piano, although, that said, he was still excellent. We were also surprised that the place was empty by 10 p.m., but that’s no doubt due to it being a location restaurant in a smaller English city that actually sleeps. The breakfast buffet is complimentary for guests and best eaten in the garden if weather permits—don’t miss the mango bio yogurt straight from the Yorkshire Dales, the supremely creamy coffee, or the Matcha muffins. The afternoon tea, made up of perfectly pretty cake morsels and scones, should ideally be taken while sitting back on a sun lounger, for maximum barefoot-contentedness. That all sounds delicious—and thanks for the tip. How did you find the service? The staff are helpful, humble, and human, and help to feed the hotel’s very relaxed feel: the French sommelier is particularly good-humored, and one of the doormen even kindly offered to pop to the pharmacy to grab some painkillers for us. That's lovely. Can you tell us a little about the other guests? Who are they?Either lucky Brits on a romantic break or spending quality time with their mothers and aunties, or foreign tourists who’ve heard of Bath’s chocolate-box delights from far and wide and know that the Royal Crescent is one of the most prestigious places to stay in the city. Consider them a cast from a Richard Curtis film, comfortable with their lot and suckers for three-hour picnics on the lawn, probably with a side of crochet. Johnny Depp is said to have stayed in the Garden Villa for three months; U2 and the Rolling Stones have booked the entire hotel before; and Manolo Blahnik has his own house just along the crescent—so don’t underestimate its more glamorous credentials, either. That's quite a mix. What about the neighborhood—anything worth checking out nearby?Bath is one of the UK’s most picturesque cities, renowned for its Roman-built baths and honey-colored Georgian architecture. It's also home to the only natural thermal hot springs you can bathe in the UK—all-in-all, the city very much lives up to its name. The local scene is therefore the quaint stuff of English stereotyping dreams. While the city has a clutch of smart B&Bs and retreats, the Royal Crescent is the hotel that locals will choose to head to for the one-off occasions they want to commemorate properly. Got it. Is there anything you'd change? There's no minibar—though if one was introduced, it would need to be stocked with suitably sophisticated wares, rather than your average M&Ms and Coca-Cola. What about anything we missed—is there anything you want to call out?The spa is surprisingly small, considering this is a spa hotel. No matter—what it lacks in size it makes up for in bespoke detail. The unique, nearly 40-foot pool is overlooked by chapel windows and has a door that leads directly from the water out to the courtyard beyond. And visitors must complete a charming personality quiz before any treatment, in order to assess whether you are a summer, spring, autumn, or winter person and therefore what sort of holistic Elemental Herbology product you require. Well, that's unusual. Alright, now tell us truly: Would you recommend this place to a friend? Why or why not?Visit the Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa anytime you want to feel quintessentially English. Teeming with historical grandeur, yet with laid-back, teetering on cheeky staff, you can walk through the mansion’s tall front door and feel time slow down, as well as reel right, right back, just for a little while." - Becky Lucas

We had a wonderful stay at this lovely hotel in Bath. The rooms are beautifully decorated, and very comfortable — a perfect place to relax after exploring the city. The hotel itself is full of charm and offers some great facilities, including a peaceful garden and a relaxing spa, which really added to the experience. Breakfast was also a highlight — fresh, tasty, and a great way to start the day. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout our stay, making us feel genuinely welcome. If you’re looking for a place to unwind in Bath with great amenities and a warm atmosphere, this hotel is a fantastic choice. Highly recommend!

Arguably, the best hotel in the south west. We visited for a 40th birthday treat for my partner, and indulged with the taster menu, spa treatments and afternoon tea. We were very kindly upgraded to a suite, and were very well looked after. All of the staff were friendly, kind, and looked after us very well - we were treated like royalty! The garden was simply stunning, and we will visit again. The best surprise, was the resident cat - Alfie. Met him on arrival and heard his story. As cat parents, we knew immediately we'd be happy here! 10/10 would recommend.

We just returned from a short stay at the Royal Crescent Hotel on 21 June. The setting is spectacular— overlooking Bath city centre in one of the most iconic set of Georgian buildings in the world. Our room (Room 55) was lovely. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom large and luxurious. Every detail in the room — from the furnishings to the upmarket toiletries courtesy of “Jo Loves” — felt very well curated. The service was very good. The staff were warm, professional, and welcoming. We took time to unwind in the spa —we especially enjoyed the pool and steam room. I’ll definitely be back. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for something truly special in Bath.

As you'd expect, expensive, but good quality and attentive staff. Great atmosphere and decor with pretty grounds. For us, we only visit as a treat on special occasions. I took my mother for afternoon tea. I have a food intolerance and they were extremely accommodating and helpful! I've never stayed overnight or used the spa, so cannot comment with those regards.

To be completely honest I am picking now and still believe this is the best hotel in Bath. My review is based on 2 stays. First time we stayed in a 2 bedroom suite in a main building and I can’t find any fault with it. Second time we travelled with our 2 dogs and were accommodated in a garden suite, consisting of 2 bedrooms and a small orangery type of living room. Tastefully done but the lack of windows was uncomfortable and slightly depressing. My main complaint is absence of coffee machine and fridge (to keep freshly prepared dog food 😎) during our second stay. It had a small kettle with an extremely short cord . Putting it on was a challenge. And no proper coffee afterwards. Second detail is the milk. I still remember the taste of fresh milk delivered in an old fashioned glass bottle to our room every morning during our first stay. Small thing, but goes a long way. Unfortunately now it’s just tiny industrial bottle of questionable substance with a weird taste. Undrinkable. Basically, if you are not a morning person and good coffee is essential for you, the morning experience turned into a challenge will disappoint you. Otherwise it’s a gorgeous place with magnificent gardens and decent breakfast. The afternoon tea and dinner on our first stay were mediocre at best. However it seems it was a big improvement and the dinner during our second stay was excellent. A huge plus if you travel with dogs is the abundance of parks around the hotel where your muppets can run freely off leash. Didn’t have the time to try SPA. Will I stay there again? Absolutely.

This is truly a beautiful hotel, in gorgeous grounds and in an iconic location. Peaceful and calm during our stay yet close to the centre of Bath.|Communications from Katie during my husband’s process of reservation was timely and very professional. It was a total surprise to me that we were staying and we were delighted to be offered an upgrade. Our room was fantastic. Located at the rear of the hotel, accessed through the grounds. Cleanliness was first rate and comfort within the room was excellent.|We had booked afternoon tea as part of our two night package which was a little underwhelming - not too many savouries really. We also felt that the attention from the staff was a little lacking in warmth and not particularly attentive considering the hotel didn’t seem to be overly busy at this time. |My husband and I both had a spa treatment which was excellent and we also used the pool which was very nice.|We did have a drink in the bar one evening and again, the service was professional but a little cold - similarly at breakfast. Not too much small talk and not too many smiles. Maybe that’s how guests prefer it although we do feel it is nice to be checked upon during service.|Overall a special hotel in a special location - just scored down slightly by our own views on the restaurant and bar service.

Stunning afternoon tea experience. This is well and truly a 5* hotel and staff deserve so much prase for the service and attentiveness they provide. The surroundings and furtniture are immaculate and the afternoon tea was gorgeous. The afternoon tea was themed to the writer Jane Austin as a celebration of her career. You can have an extra layer of sandwiches included as complementary and try lots of flavours of tea and coffee as well as hot chocolate, as much as you can drink. There was not one leaf in the grounds out of place!! We highly recommend.

Massage & Afternoon high tea- I had the most wonderful experience at the hotel spa and couldn’t be more grateful for the exceptional hospitality! I booked the 90-minute Signature Package which included a relaxing steam, sauna, swim, and a superb massage by Charlotte. She truly has magic hands, she knew exactly where my pressure points were and worked wonders on my aching shoulders. As a postpartum mum, this pampering session was exactly what I needed. After the spa, we were treated to a delightful afternoon high tea, beautifully served by Johnty. Everything was delicious and elegantly presented, even my toddler gave it a thumbs up! This entire experience made my birthday week feel extra special. Thank you to the entire team for creating such a warm and welcoming environment. I’ll definitely be back soon! 💗

Yelp
Situated in the Royal Crescent with stunning views, this Georgian hotel is the nicest I've stayed at in Bath. We stayed for 6 nights and I can't wait to come back next year. Everyone from the concierge, waiters, managers, and housekeeping made us feel welcomed. The one manager took the time to speak to my family every time he saw us and even went out of his way to explain the sculptures in the garden. The gardens themselves are stunning - a little oasis away from the crowds. We had the same waiter for our first tea and several breakfasts and he was so kind. I recommend afternoon tea, the breakfasts, and drinks at the lounge.

Yelp
I've had a lot of afternoon teas but this one by far, is the best I've had. Plus I'm in England having it! Also got lucky with it still being coronation month when I was there, they still had the coronation high tea. Perfect! The Royal crescent hotel is a stellar location to have the tea at. Definitely in a league if it's own, in Bath. The hotel itself was fascinating and very classic and beautiful. The restaurant where you have the tea is in the grounds and the scenery is just stunning. Lush greenery everywhere and beautiful flowers, and just the most beautiful setting for a very classy British tea. We all opted for the Coronation high tea, and I added a glass of champagne, because why not! We all picked our teas from an extensive list. I had the masala chai which was a nice take on the Indian chai with spices . Others had granny's garden, morning dew and the yunnan black tea. Lots of different colors! The champagne was also lovely! The tiered plates came with lots of delicious bites, the finger sandwiches were awesome, they had smoked salmon, the classic cucumber, egg salad, roast beef, and we opted for some vegetarian ones too, the roasted red pepper , basil and lemon hummus was my favorite. The plum tomato chutney also really good, and there was a guacamole, dill and lime one. You get unlimited amounts of finger sandwiches! The bread was so nice and grainy and soft. The array of sweet treats was mind boggling. Cakes, pastries, scones with real clotted cream and jam! Bath buns, specialty of the area Kinda really loved the scones and bath buns. The cute chocolate crown on the brownie was adorable and delicious. Everything here was just fabulous. Such a fun afternoon experience with my high school friends. The service was awesome, felt very high society ! One of the fanciest teas I've had.

Yelp
The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is situated in one of the most famous crescents in the world. Designed by the architect John Wood the Younger, the Royal Crescent was built between 1767 and 1774. Occupying Houses 15 & 16 of the Crescent - Number 16 The Royal Crescent became a guest house in 1950 and in 1973 it was combined with House 15 to create The Royal Crescent Hotel. The hotel has had 3 previous owners before being acquired by Topland Group. The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa went through an extensive refurbishment throughout all 45 rooms and suites, function and public rooms, the kitchen and one acre of private gardens, this was completed in April 2014. Jane Clayton was the Interior Designer and Alison Jenkins the Landscape Designer. Alison went on to design the Tattinger Spa Garden in July 2015. In April 2016 The Garden Villa's own walled garden was redeveloped, enabling residential guests, wedding parties and corporate clients to make full use of the area. The Spa & Bath House had a complete makeover in May 2016, bringing it in line with the rest of the hotel and its facilities. The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa's suites are named after famous guests who have stayed there. Amongst the most famous was Prince Frederick, Duke of York, the favourite son of King George III and the reason why the Royal Crescent achieved it's regal title. Frederick is best remembered in the nursery rhyme 'The Grand old Duke of York' which charters his humilating defeat at Flanders against the armies of revolutionary French in 1773.

Yelp
BEWARE!!! If you are greeted by an employee named MATT at the restaurant (tall gentleman with thick rimmed glasses) and he tells you that HE DOESN'T SEE THAT YOU MADE A RESERVATION, call the main number and inquire. When I checked in with him and inquired about a possible earlier time for our dinner reservation (made the day before), he took one look at me and told me that he didn't see our name for a reservation. That's so strange. What about a different time? Sorry, he said... The restaurant, was booked. He didn't look up from the screen and didn't offer to help in any way. We were leaving the next day so it was our only time to eat there and we did make a reservation. "So sorry," he said, without looking up. I'm not sure if it was how I was dressed or my American accent. We went up to our room and started looking at other dinner options... and then I remembered how he looked at me.... And I asked my dad to call the main number about our reservation. He did. Sure enough WE DID have a reservation. And of course, they could move it to an earlier time. We were seated half an hour earlier and the restaurant remained half empty throughout our meal. That was the only unfortunate experience we had here. Just wanted to warn you all since it had been quite a while since I have been treated like that. Every other aspect of our stay was wonderful. The rooms are fabulous and the garden is stunning. All the other staff are polite and welcoming. The food is fabulous and the surrounding area is lovely. They put sparkling water by the bed each day and replenish it for turndown service. I would come back here in an instant. Wonderful experience overall.... Except for Matt treating us very poorly.

Yelp
If the architecture alone for The Royal Crescent doesn't draw you in when on a visit to Bath, then let the high tea in the garden convince you. I did not personally stay at the hotel, but I did go to the garden for tea one afternoon, and after having several other disappointing experiences with tea in the UK, I was so happy to have paid a visit to The Royal Crescent. The staff was lovely, and the environment was elevated and chic. The weather was absolutely perfect (end of May), and could have stayed in the garden all day. Highly recommended.

Yelp
The food here is out of this world. The only problem I have is the drink size. Wine is a very small pour as well as the martinis. I called them baby martinis

Tom C.

Yelp
During a recent stay we discovered that we had lost a passport. The hotel staff could not have been nicer and more accommodating in helping us solve the problem. Especially the hotel manager Isabel, she was fantastic. On top of all that, the hotel is lovely.

Yelp
This hotel is amazing! It's definitely a 5 star hotel. The staff is delightful and the hotel is kept in pristine condition. I also went to the spa which was a great experience.

Yelp
We stayed here for a weekend in the classic Elizabeth Linley suite. The staff were very polite and helpful especially when we were checking in. However when we got in our suite we were not very pleased as it looked like it was really ready for a refurb. The t.v was way too small, the bed coverings and the bed head very stained and the room had a very distinct odour which I suspected was coming from the restaurant down stairs. The breakfast was good enough. We used the bath house which was not too bad, my fiancé enjoyed the pool and I did not mind the steam room. All in all a nice stay but perhaps a bit expensive.

Yelp
It is not every day (or even year) that I cross the Atlantic to partake of some English culture so when my aunt and I decided to venture to Bath for a short visit we knew we wanted to make the most of it. The Royal Crescent was a memorable experience, even though we did have difficulty finding the hotel itself seeing as how the roads were one way and signage sparse once we got into Bath from Southampton. By the time we had located the hotel- thanks to a very helpful cabbie - we were more than ready to check out the luxurious surroundings that would be ours for the two days of our stay and regroup before making our reconnaissance of Bath. I will point out that the hotel is undergoing a refurbishment program, making the spa off limits, except by appointment. This was not a deal breaker, as the purpose of our visit was to soak up some culture and take in the sights. The room that we stayed in appeared by all counts to have been refreshed, seeing as how it boasted a large, flat-screen wall mounted television. The décor featured soothing, if muted, grays and purples, along with flower arrangements throughout. We enjoyed seeing the adjoining gardens. As we were located just a few doors away from No. 1 Royal Crescent, an historic Georgian town house that was the first house to be built in the Crescent, we took the opportunity to have a look around. The hotel staff were very helpful and unfailingly polite throughout our visit. We would have liked to have sampled the afternoon tea, but we did find the breakfasts were quite good. On the one night that the rain curtailed any evening outings, we decided to stay in and were pleasantly surprised by the hotel bar, especially the excellent martini which I understand is not always easy to come by in England. This is definitely a once in a lifetime experience and I am glad that I had the opportunity to view aspects of Bath, both historic and modern, through the lens of this top quality hotel.

Yelp
As someone who is a little over zealous about history, staying at the Royal Crescent has been on my bucket list for a very long time. It did not disappoint. The service is exceptional and the rooms are what you would anticipate when paying what you must to experience a setting of this caliber. To walk through the doors on the famous façade and have a room with all the modern luxuries you would expect with the Georgian charm you hope for is almost surreal. The gardens through the back create a wonderful sanctuary against the often present crush of tourists in the front. Having been one of those tourists who is fortunate enough to be able to cross the threshold into the Royal Crescent, as opposed to being a spectator on the outside, I felt especially privileged. I strongly urge anyone with a passion for history, a love of Bath, and the means to stay a visit to this prestigious and spectacular hotel.

Yelp
I have taken so long to write this because I don't like to give bad reviews but feel it is necessary to warn others. We stayed here in March. The hotel is really stunning and the service is great. The bartender Liam was exceptional. I had a massage and facial and really enjoyed both. I felt so comfortable at this hotel so much that I didn't lock up my cash in my purse. Unfortunately someone went through my purse and took $550 from my wallet. They also went through my husbands backpack but fortunately he didn't have anything of value. We reported this to the manager. He interviewed the house cleaner who usually has someone with her but that day she was in our room by herself. The manager could not do anything to resolve this issue. He has offered us one free night next time we are in Bath. We live in California so I don't see us returning anytime soon. Lesson learned even if you feel safe and comfortable lock up you valuables!

Jeff S.

Yelp
The High Tea here was not great. It was very costly and the money didn't meet the standards. Normally when you go to high tea, you expect them to give you basically as much food as you can ask for. My family of five all ordered 5 Afternoon teas and when we asked for an extra six scones they said they couldn't give that to us. They said they would allow top-offs and they're basically denying us the right for all to get one extra scone when we're paying so much. The tea also was not of great quality and there was nothing special about the finger sandwiches and the desert was sub-par. Other than that, the staff was friendly, but I would not recommend having tea here.

Nina G.

Yelp
One of the finest hotels at which I've ever stayed. I splurged (got a great deal on one of the travel websites) and have no regrets about doing so. This beautiful, historic property will blow you away ... luxurious rooms, free afternoon tea with cookies, beautiful gardens, a first rate spa with relaxation pool, sauna, steam room and whirlpool. Most of all, the staff, to a person, was professional, helpful and attentive. I loved it and can't wait to go back again. Highest recommedation.

Yelp
We understand that this is a High End Hotel. Please state if it is your policy that the restaurant and bar are for guest only. My husband and I were willing to pay whatever it took for a glass of wine in the corner ,on a bench in your garden at 1:00 pm. We did not take up a table , which there were many. Our server seated us knowing we were only having a drink. He gave us drink menus and asked if we were staying at the hotel. We should have answered yes! He never came back. We waited 20 minutes and left. Then went to The Circus. Amazing meal and had our glass of wine.

Yelp
Excellent hotel, well located in Bath. Service is outstanding as the staff leaped to meet any request. Grounds (the garden) are charming and the whole property has an excellent feel. Rooms are spacious and well appointed and the restaurant was very good, even if a step behind the Olive Tree. Gym and spa are also excellent. The place to stay in lovely Bath.

Top quality hotel with top quality food. Excellent for business meetings. Part on Von Essen that have Hunstrete House, Homewood Park and Ston Easton in the Bath / Bristol area.

Great affordable accommodation in the Centre of Bath. This Royal Crescent ground floor apartment has a romantic garden and is much cheaper then other hotels in the building. Highly recommend

Yelp
definitely a special occasion venue but the suite we stayed in was sensational. it made the moment of proposing so very special. the spa facilities are also worth exploring although not the most exceptional they are a good way to end the day. food was of the same standard as you would expect. very high. all in all an experience worth repeating.
