Eat, Sip, and Stay in These Epic Culinary Hotels in Canada

"A restored 19th-century, 33-room railway inn near Prince Edward County that blends Italian flavors, Scandinavian design and Canadian heritage. Many apple- and pear-themed rooms feature fireplaces, tartan-tiled bathrooms and soaker tubs set right in the bedrooms, creating a cozy boutique atmosphere. In the kitchen, chef Albert Ponzo sources from his family’s Edwin County Farms for handmade pastas, wood-fired sourdough-crust pizzas and dishes finished with honey from the chef’s own beehives." - Claire Sibonney

The Royal Hotel

"Why book?  Since it first opened its doors as a luxurious railway hotel in the late 19th century, The Royal Hotel has claimed an illustrious place on Picton’s Main Street—and in the hearts of locals, most of whom have a story about the building’s run-down dive bar days. After the Sorbara family saved the property from demolition and lovingly restored it from the studs, The Royal is back and better than ever, offering casual luxury that honors both Prince Edward County’s roots and current status as a wine tourism hot spot. Set the scene Even on a wet, gray afternoon, the lobby of the newly reopened Royal Hotel is buzzing, full of locals meeting by the sleek curved fireplace and moms chatting over coffee at The Counter Bar. Once the center of County life, it didn’t take The Royal long to reclaim its destiny as the County’s most notable address. Every detail of the property’s restoration has been carefully considered, from the oversized windows that are perfect replicas of those that looked out onto Main Street more than a century ago to the mortar used to bind the entryway, made of the same composition as the original. But the new Royal is hardly mired in nostalgia. From contemporary works throughout the property by locally based multimedia artist and photographer Christine Flynn to a weekly winemaker series—hosted around a vintage-inspired cupboard that swings open to transform the back corner of the lobby into a bar—Prince Edward County’s modern sophistication and creativity feature heavily in the hotel’s exciting reinvention. The backstory When former Ontario finance minister Greg Sorbara purchased a family farm in rural Prince Edward County nearly 20 years ago, he never imagined how far his new roots would spread. After learning the crumbling structure that was once The Royal was slated for demolition in 2014, he snapped it up and made restoring the former gem a family endeavor. Led by Sorbara's son-in-law Sol Korngold, who is now The Royal’s GM, the the hotel's restoration and transformation by Giannone Petricone Associates was singular in its execution, from the hand-plastered walls and spot-on lighting (energetic zig-zag lighting ushers guests to Chef Albert Ponzo’s dining room, at the rear of the ground floor, while floor-level sconces bathe guestroom hallways in warm, sexy light) to modern details that pay homage to the hotel’s Victorian days. The rooms All 33 guest rooms at The Royal are named for local apple varieties, honoring the County’s agricultural heritage. The rooms echo the modern play on Victorian design seen in the lobby—all highly touchable textiles and fresh takes on classic details, such as custom floor-to-ceiling tartan-inspired tile mosaics and rippling doily-like edging around bathroom counters. While the lines are sleek, the vibe is sumptuous: rooms feature plush robes and bedding and many have fireplaces that turn on with the flick of a button and deep soaker tubs located right in the bedroom (bathrooms have walk-in rainfall showers)—as enticing as County’s wine and food trails and provincial parks may be, it’s very tempting to just stay in. Food and drink As you might expect from a hotel that credits its new existence to its owners’ farm, the food at The Royal is rooted heavily in local ingredients. Executive chef Albert Ponzo—who formerly helmed the kitchen at Toronto’s iconic Le Select bistro and was drawn to the County specifically because of the Sorbaras’ vision and the appeal of rural life—cooks deeply satisfying and decidedly unfussy food rooted in an Italian approach: think house-made pastas, such as tiny, perfect cappeletti stuffed with squash, sourdough breads and pizzas, and simple salads that allow the best of the season to shine. Much comes from the Sorbara family’s Edwin County Farms and other local purveyors, including honey from Ponzo’s own farm (also sold in the lobby gift shop). The Counter Bar in the lobby also features grab-and-go pastries, coffee, snacks, and curated groceries, and warmer months bring al fresco dining and drinks on the back terrace.  The neighborhood/area Just the promise of The Royal’s reopening has reinvigorated the eastern end of Picton’s main street: the last few years have seen the opening of a new tapas bar, craft cocktail room, and a second location of the beloved Slickers County Ice Cream (try the campfire flavor), as well as shops such as the Ye11ow Studio pottery shop (you’ll find artisan Dawn Middleton’s works in The Royal’s dining room), all within a block. Sandbanks Provincial Park and popular wineries such as Closson Chase and Hinterland—known for its crisp bubbles made by the Charmat method—are within a 25-minute drive. The service Don’t be fooled by the staff’s laid-back approach—employees are informed and empowered to attend to every detail, and highly attuned to guest needs. There’s no doubt working conditions have something to do with it: the Sorbaras purchased adjacent housing to avoid the staffing challenges associated with being a seasonal destination and organized tours for employees of every beach and winery in the region to make everyone who works at the hotel a local expert. That means that from the front desk staff to room service delivery, every employee has a favorite recommendation they’re eager to share. For families While rooms in the main building are better-suited to couples, suites in The Royal Annex are perfect for family stays. Previously horse stables, the Annex too has been thoughtfully renovated, featuring Scandinavian-inspired design with oversized pet-friendly suites that offer sofa beds, kitchenettes, and dining tables. ** ** Eco effort Reusable bottles (there’s a filtered water and ice station on every floor) and refillable toiletries in every room. Accessibility Three rooms (one Cortland and two Russet) meet accessibility standards and the hotel’s dining room and public spaces are accessible. Anything left to mention? While the ultra private, uber chic guests-only pool deck makes The Royal the place to book during Prince Edward County’s busy summer season, don’t sleep on an off-season stay. Many rooms have fireplaces and standalone soaker tubs; add in Chef Ponzo’s hearty cooking—ribollita with cassoulet beans and kale salad with sweet potato, parsnip, and celeriac—and you’ve got the makings of a cozy luxe getaway any time of year." - Alyssa Schwartz

The Royal Hotel (Picton, Ontario) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"150 years ago Picton, Ontario was important enough to merit a rather grand railroad hotel, but prior to its recent redevelopment, the splendid red-brick Royal Hotel was on the way to demolition. Now, with wine-country tourism on a major upswing, there is again a need for a stylish and luxurious lodging on the Royal’s level. Today it mixes heritage glamour with contemporary cool, filling the rooms with high-end modern comforts and adding enticements like a spa, a sauna, and a seasonal outdoor pool. Farm-to-table cooking is a major point of emphasis, as are Prince Edward County’s local wines." - Tablet Hotels

We recently stayed for 3-nights to celebrate a birthday. The team was able to put balloons in our room when we arrived to surprise my partner, which was great. We loved the relaxing suite, especially the bath tub and fireplace in the room. We visited during a heat wave so we ended up ordering room service more than we usually would. It’s the same menu as their amazing restaurant (which we also visited and love) so it was actually perfect. It was very relaxing to have this option. Our room faced the street so there was noise but being a small town, it wasn’t loud other than a few cars honking during our stay. At night it was quiet and peaceful. We visited the spa for massages, which were nice and relaxing. The staff here is very friendly and want to help you have a great stay. Even during a busy time, they still make you feel welcome. This was the perfect place to escape for a few days to unwind and not lift a finger. Thanks for a great stay!

Decided we needed some culture and gourmet food on a recent scuba diving trip, so we made a reservation. The serving staff were amazingly polite, efficient and fun to interact with. They seated our group at the harvest table. Atmosphere was nice, the place was hopping with diners and guests. The food was exceptional! Oysters 🦪 were great. Appetizers were great. Pasta was great and most of us enjoyed the rib eye which was an incredible 🥩 cut. So melt in the mouth good and the flavour was exceptional. The chef 🧑‍🍳 Albert even came out to say hello and thank us for dining there. Very classy and professional. The quality of the food and the service cake at a price, but you know what? Sometimes you just have to dive in and enjoy the finer things in life and this food was it! 👏 Thank you for having us.

They have done an amazing job with this hotel. The facade to the buildings history has been maintained but everything in it is modern. The rooms are well designed for comfort and calming . The soaps were local and even my husband noticed the wonderful natural ( NOT FLOWERY) fragrance. We enjoyed the restaurant as well for lunch and breakfast. The food was delicious and service was attentive. The place is a central drawing area as it is fully booked with guests but never too busy for what we needed.

A charming place, with a lovely outdoor veranda that made our lunch simply perfect. As an Italian, I usually avoid eating Italian food abroad. But this time, it was impossible to resist—the aroma coming from the kitchen completely won me over. We decided to stay… and it was a great choice. Delicious, authentic dishes prepared with care and passion.* The experience was so positive that we asked to meet the chef—Albert, of Italian origin, who was kind and passionate. *Clean, bright, airy and welcoming atmosphere. The cuisine truly exceeded our expectations.* Highly recommended!

We had a lovely one night stay at the Royal. We had massages at the spa with Laura Young and they were great and therapeutic. The spa staff-Brittany at reception she was so inviting, friendly and knowledgeable. Love there are lots of products to sample.Jay at the front desk was so friendly and accommodating. Love the welcome sparkling wine from Hinterland when you check in it’s a nice touch! Our room had beautiful linens and a gorgeous stylish shower with Telford high end products. The bed was comfy as well. We went for dinner on the garden back patio. We loved our food-meatball appetizer, pesto gnocchi, and a speck pizza and we shared the huge homemade chocolate cake. Great service there as well. All around it’s a quality stay! They have a small pool which we enjoyed as well. We plan to return possibly in the fall for countylicious.

I was visiting Picton during the Canada Day festivities and happened upon The Royal. I was intrigued by its presence on Main Street and had to walk in and see what was behind the stunning street view facade. Oh my gosh, loved it at first sight! I didn't have the pleasure of staying overnight but want to return soon for a mid week visit. I did get to enjoy a gorgeous cafe latte in and bomboloni in their foyer seating area which was comfy and with a view of the street activities. Then I returned again later in the day for their delicious stone oven pizza in the bistro, which didn't disappoint. And of course another latte because the first one was just that good. I checked out the restaurant area which was tremendously inviting and there is a patio out back that I can't wait to explore through the taste buds. I can't wait to return for a stay, and yet my two time visit in one day was absolutely lovely! I also ran into Rachel at the front desk, who I knew from another property and was delighted she remembered me and offered to connect in the future. Bravo, well done ... I Loved this first impression of the Royal property, downtown Picton!! Cheers, Spicy Jan

Dining at The Royal Hotel in Picton is an experience that quietly impresses from start to finish. The atmosphere is polished but never stuffy—warm lighting, elegant decor, and a thoughtful layout that gives the space a sense of calm and sophistication. It’s the kind of place where you can dress up for a special occasion or just enjoy a relaxed evening out in style. The food? Genuinely excellent. Everything we tried felt rooted in quality and care—from the house-made pasta to the beautifully plated mains.

Google
I had a wonderful experience at The Royal Hotel Spa. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is calm and inviting—thanks in no small part to Brittney at the front desk, who is friendly, welcoming, and helps set a relaxing tone right from the start. The spa itself is nicely designed and feels upscale without being stuffy or intimidating. I've been twice now and have had treatments from Rachel McNamara and Laura Young, while my daughter saw Alexis Bowen. All three massage therapists were exceptional—professional, attentive, and clearly very skilled. You really can’t go wrong with anyone on their team. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a top-tier spa experience in a warm, approachable setting.

Yelp
Overall rating 3.5/5 (rounded down on Yelp) We were very much looking forward to dining at the Royal Hotel during a recent trip to Prince Edward County, especially after seeing positive social media posts & reviews. The decor and ambiance of the hotel and restaurant are gorgeous. It gave us Anthropologie/modern secret garden vibes with warm mood lighting and cozy patio benches that truly elevated the dining experience. In terms of service, the host was prompt and for most of our meal, service was attentive. We did notice that when we were mostly finished eating, service quality decreased (e.g., no more unprompted water refills or checking in to see if we were done/wanted dessert). Not sure if it was because the restaurant got busier? The most important part, though, is the food. Unfortunately, this did not meet our expectations. While the presentation was beautiful, the main issue we had was that every dish was too salty (especially the tartare and pasta), making it difficult to taste all the flavours. Personally, I was disappointed by the pappardelle because I couldn't taste anything other than cream and salt, and I found that the pasta itself was a bit too thick and threw off the balance of the dish. Presentation also didn't seem to be consistent, as you can see in the photo with the two exact same pasta dishes that one looked significantly more well-presented (top). Hoping that this is just a one-off incident because I would love to return if the food improves.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about the Royal. The restored/renovated building is beautifully done, modern architecture modern styling. They have imported some decent chefs from Toronto. The Drake suffers from inexperienced and overbusy staff and dishes lack personal attention by the sous chefs. The result is a small production style menu to be produced en mass with lack of quality control in order to handle the tourist crowds. I have experienced a woke big fish in a small pond attitude - that their reputation precedes their care for customer service. At this price point - I will go elsewhere where my business is appreciated.

Yelp
I joined a group at the Royal for supper, we had a wonderful night. Amazing atmosphere, the establishment is beyond beautiful. The staff were very quick to answer all of our questions and ensure we were taken care of. The food was absolutely divine and I can't wait to return!

Yelp
Had breakfast this morning in the dinning room. The location was great looking over the back patio. Dinning room was comfortable. We where welcomed at the concierge and escorted to the dinning room. We where again welcomed by Kerry at the dinning room. Coffee/Tea was ordered and arrived and arrived quickly. Water was provided as well. Two orders of "Royal Breakfast" arrived quickly and was absolutely delicious. Two eggs(any style) potatoe pave, sauté collards, strip bacon and toasted sourdough bread(made on premises). A thoroughly enjoyable atmosphere and meal. Definitely worth a return trip... perhaps for lunch or dinner. Shout out to Kerry. Your interaction with dinners makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

Yelp
Great food and great ambiance, whether you eat in the restaurant, bar, counter bar or patio. They play upscale but have dependable and professional service. Their menu is tight, meaning they are conscious of changing their offerings and keeping this fresh.

Yelp
We didn't stay at the hotel but went to the royal for lunch while on vacation in PEC. The food was delicious, the service was very accommodating and so friendly, the place is beautiful, but best of all they brought 2 etch a sketch to occupy our 4 year olds until the food came!

Yelp
Visiting the county for the week, was delighted to see The Royal was finally done construction and opened for business! Located right on Main St in Picton, the building has a beautiful facade and ambience. We came for dinner on a Tuesday night. At first we were only one of two tables, but throughout the night more and more tables were filling up. The server was very friendly, knowledgeable and polite. The food was very very good! We ordered a few appetizers and entrees to share. The drinks were also delicious! We tried the following: Cocktails: Mule: served with a lot of crushed ice. Really lovely light taste that was not too sweet. County G and T: Made with Kinsip Old Toms Gin - one of our favourites - and their own homemade tonic water. This was a very lovely refreshing G&T. I would've thought it was really really good, had i not tried Kinsips own recipe for G&T which does beat it. But if you haven't tried Kinsips drink, this one is still very very good! Beef tartare: just what you'd expect, simple served with some crostini's. Whitefish mousse: really really good! I think it might be one of my favourites of the night. Little "grainola" on top to add a delightful little crunch. Radicchio salad: to be honest, we only ordered this to make ourselves feel better about ordering all meat and fish it was still a nice fresh salad, but I would've liked more citrus in there to offset the bitterness of the radicchio. French fries: Really good fries! They were seasoned perfectly and nice and crunchy. They also were great to dip into the whitefish mousse and beef tartare. We were having a huge craving and this was just right! Capellini: OUTSTANDING! Might be one of the best pastas I have ever had and I have been to Italy a few times. Filled with unctuous butternut squash in a brown butter squash. This was seriously so delicious. Cheese plate: Came with a variety of Canadian cheeses. One soft, one firm, one blue with a fruit jelly (I am guessing Concord grape) and some nut bread. Really nice entrance into dessert! Lemon dessert: I don't recall the true name, but it was excellent - not too sweet. Lovely lemon custard with blueberry jelly and some crunchy graham cracker. All in all it was truly a wonderful meal, great service, and beautiful atmosphere.

Yelp
Came here for brunch and was not disappointed ! The dining room is stunning & elegant. Gatsby vibes. Love the open kitchen. Ordered the Royal Breakfast - Potato Pave is a huge standout - crispy & perfect. We ordered two separate pizzas (we were hungover) - one for the table and one to go, both were incredible (we got one white pizza with caramelized onions & one traditional pizza with red sauce & pepperoni). Would definitely return for dinner next time.

Yelp
Fantastic diner of duck confit, a special potato sliced finely and veggies from the Eddie farm. As well, the other guest had lamb shank with paperadelle noodles. Superb. Best was the Meringue with strawberries.

Yelp
Super friendly staff and such a stunning hotel. I loved the design of the entire hotel. Definitely a must visit. Rooms: they were really spacious and even had a speaker and a fireplace. Restaurant: the food was delicious. Probably one of the best burgers we've had.

Yelp
Sad that someone posted a negative review of a place that's only been open for a month, and has only just been allowed to open fully two days ago. I'm not surprised that the staff were reticent to allow dogs in a hotel, especially one with a takeout counter operating at the time. I'm pleased to say that both of my outings to the newly opened restaurant have resulted in excellent food. The cod with Béarnaise and the Royale burger (medium was perfect) were highlights for me. The slight hiccups with service on Monday's opening lunch service were not repeated today. The staff were pleasant and efficient. Chef Ponzo's food is exquisite and a welcome addition to the County.

P T.

Yelp
The service is rude. Walked in for dinner in the bar and although the place was nearly empty and there were five staff in sight, I was ignored by all for about 5 minutes. The bartender was too busy chatting up a customer. The chef, standing two feet to my right ignored me. Two other wait staff pointedly ignored me, after walking right past, and the front desk staff did the same. If you like that kind of snooty-ass Toronto service, you'll feel right at home. Eaten here two or three times before and the service was similarly casual. If I'm going to pay big city prices for a pretentious small town watering hole, the service needs to be fantastic and friendly.

Yelp
Bliss. This hotel is perfect. It's as if the best boutique hotel in Manhattan dropped into Picton. Nothing has been overlooked. Great customer service in an atmosphere that is simply stunning. Excited to spend 48 hours here. We will be back!

Yelp
Hands down the best steak and frites (medium rare on chef's recommendation) & cheeseburger, cooked to perfection. The beef tartare with pistachio garnish was an interesting and highly recommended starter. We were equally surprised with the fish mousse that the server recommended- there was a subtle fish taste (not fishy at all) and overall incredibly light and very fitting for an appetizer. For steak and Frites: The quality of the meat is incredible! The manager mentioned that most of their menu items are locally sourced. This restaurant is hands down the best fine dining I've had. Sick of the highly overrated restaurants in TO and found this to be amazing value for money. Booking in advance is recommened for busy weekends.

Yelp
Excellent food and fabulous ambience. And special thanks to Michael and Emma for their professionalism and redeeming customer service. We appreciated it!

Yelp
Typically when I have eaten at hotel restaurants the service is excellent. My expectations of The Royal was to be luxury in all aspects. Decor is pretty but that cannot be the only experience. Hotel employees were engaged in their own conversations and missed the opportunities to greet/thank individuals as they walk in/walk out. I was not expecting that employees not have a styled dress code. We have property here and love to shop local and support local. Food was OK. Prices are not a concern except I would have expected a breakfast menu that was different.

Kelli D.

Yelp
Service was slow. Atmosphere was bland. I expected more for the money I paid. It's the details that matter. For example, I ordered the bone marrow for an appetizer and it was served with some super thin emaciated crostini that couldn't stand up to the marrow. The wine list was just OK. The entire dinner was mediocre. The tally was over $300 for 2 people. For that money it was not worth it.
