Night's out are a bit of a rarity these days, since the little one came along, so when my partner and I got a chance to come to The Salt Room on a work night out, we bagged a babysitter and jumped at the change to eat out in a restaurant again - a real treat these days! Plus we had heard great things about The Salt Rooms and couldn't wait to try them out.
We arrived early and grabbed a cocktail at the bar. We both went for a Sussex Royal which was a delightful combination of Prosecco and sloe gin, with flavours of cherry and citrus. A perfect aperitif. To be honest, I would be perfectly happy to sit at the bar and sample a few of their cocktails without even having a meal here.
However, on this occasion, we were here for the food. The menu heavily favours steak and fish, and the majority of our table went for the Black Angus rib-eye steak cooked on the josher charcoal grill. Being the only female on the table, I wasn't going to be outdone by the boys and I went for the 400g as opposed to the 250g. The steak was good, but as I so often find when eating out, there was nothing exceptional about it. We have better steak at home for a fraction of the price and I do wonder how they justify the £32 price tag. Luckily on this occasion, I wasn't paying!
Before the steak, I had the crab starter which was a bit of a disappointment as there was far more mayo-style sauce than actual crab meat, I definitely wouldn't re-order this dish. Unfortunately, we had to leave before dessert, due to babysitter restrictions, which was a shame as the menu looked very tempting.
The atmosphere was good and the service was exceptional. We had a lovely Australian waitress who was helpful, friendly and chatty. However, the restaurant as a whole didn't quite live up to the hype so although it was a nice night out, we will definitely try somewhere else next time the opportunity arises.
