This was supposed to be a CHARITY event with police officers in the 7th District, which is Englewood & the children on the teams, playing alongside. When I arrived today, I saw the police cars leaving & inside there was total chaos. Nothing seemed to be organized. I asked about the games & I was told that the event was cancelled & no one bothered to contact the coaches. Why, you ask? A few of the kids who showed up today we're mad they couldn't participate, so they complained to the Lieutenant of the Salvation Army. This wasn't something that popped up on the calendar today. It was planned. Each coach chose 8 kids for their roster, which was finalized last Friday. There were about 20 kids I've never seen there before. If you don't come around or participate, how is anyone to know whether or not you can play in the tournament? We chose the kids we know. The ones who always show up & who are actively present the majority of the time. Why not explain to them how this was arranged & under what guidelines? Why take away this opportunity for the others? On top of that, another Coach had shirts made for the teams & he was told no one can wear them until October 15th! Why? So now you've bitten another hand that fed you. Once I got a chance to speak with him he said everything was all wrong. That's not the way he wrote the proposal. The funny thing is I WAS THE ONE WHO WENT TO THE DIRECTOR IN APRIL & suggested we do a charity game with CPD & CFD. Hmmm. He also said 6 teams is too many & the quarters are too long for the police to keep up the same pace as the kids AND he ONLY wants Englewood children to play! PUMP THE BRAKES! So you mean none of the kids who have been showing up here, at this location, every Friday, where we have run our FREE program, for the last 3 yrs, without any compensation, are eligible to play? That's correct. Basically you just spit in my face! But you won't get the chance to fool me twice. DEUCES! You will not take advantage of me & my time & then take us for granted. How unappreciative of you! We've taken these boys to tournaments, bball games & hooked them up with different partners all over the city, even an upcoming trip to the white house for a few of them, and THIS is the thanks we get. I shelled out close to $400 last summer so they could play in a league. We've sponsored their teams for the Ronald McDonald 3 on 3 for the past 3 yrs. There are a small number of boys outside of Englewood who take the bus in or get transported by parents so they can be a part of the program, but they're gum of the bottom of your shoe. The police have to interact with anyone that walks, drives or rides through that area. All of the kids were devastated. They asked what are we gonna do now? That really hurts me & makes me sad. These boys don't just come there to play ball. They don't it because there aren't other options for them. Turning them away defeats the purpose of your presence & your mission statement.
