Best New Cookbooks: Fall 2020 - Eater

"In the introduction of her debut cookbook, Lara Lee writes that an overflowing generosity is central to Indonesian culture; meals are shared freely between neighbors and friends. This generosity fills the pages of Coconut & Sambal, each recipe heightening the sense that as a reader, you’ve been let in on something special. Lee, who was born in Australia, didn’t spend time in Indonesia until later in life, so early memories of Indonesian cooking come from the trips her grandmother Margaret Thali — whom Lee lovingly refers to as Popo throughout the book — would take to Australia. Each of the cookbook’s chapter introductions is deeply researched: Some recount stories of Lee’s grandmother, and others focus on the Indonesia that Lee fell in love with as she traveled across the archipelago collecting stories and recipes for this book. The recipes that fill Coconut & Sambal demonstrate that Indonesian cuisine cannot be painted with one brush. The food of the nation — made up of more than 15,000 islands — incorporates the sharp heat of chiles, the mellow hit of fermented shrimp, the sweetness of coconut in nearly every form, and always enough rice to go around. You’ll find curries fragrant with makrut lime leaf, ginger, and turmeric, and bright ceviches adorned with thinly sliced chiles, banana shallot, and palm sugar; I was particularly drawn to a fried chicken dish (page 142), its crisp shell smashed and laced with fiery sambal. Lee explains that recipes are typically passed down orally in Indonesian culture, which makes me even more grateful for these written ones. What Lee has given readers is a gorgeous document that sets in stone food traditions passed down through generations, as well as some she’s created herself. You’ll want to dedicate an evening to turning the pages of this book, planning out feasts of green chile braised duck, Balinese roasted pork belly, and perhaps some sticky ginger toffee pudding to top it all off." - Eater Staff

Yesterday both of us were totally zonked after working in the cbd. Since my boyfriend is a seafood nut, it's like searching for a needle in a haystack to get seafood Indonesian restaurants in Sydney that won't overcook the seafood - tasty but dry, what a total culinary cop-out, right? Imagine fried prawns or fish - tasty but dry, it's a gastronomic sin! Sigh Hence I took him to Sambal on Kent Street - they totally delivered, thank goodness! We ordered Eggplant Sambal Balado style (yummy), Fish fillet with spicy, sweet and sour Padang style sauce (approved!), highly recommended fry PRAWNS & stinky beans in sambal sauce - Carrick was in absolute seafood heaven! The rendang was good but cannot be compared to the most delicious original minang rendang, let's get real. Carrick loved his wedang jahe (hot sweetened ginger tea) and I had es cincau (Grass jelly, chia seeds, coconut pandan syrup) - yum! Overall we love this restaurant and was happy I was not the cook, phew!

Compared to other Indonesian places I have had, this one wasn't that flash. Service was ok, but I did have to ask for a fork. The satay chicken lacked flavour but was eatable. My wife had the duck which she found ok.

PROS: -Tasty and authentic Indonesian food -Small family run business -open and airing to the street side -Location is convenient -Very Reasonable priced. CONS: -Just about every dish has garlic. They tried to accommodate my garlic allergy. OVERALL Impression This is a hidden food gem that I am glad we found. Give it a try.

The Sambal serves up authentic Indonesian flavours in Sydney. The Soto Ayam is exactly what you'd expect from a real Indonesian kitchen — rich, comforting, and delicious. The Cendol is one of the best in town, and the Ikan Saos Padang is a spicy, flavourful must-try. Highly recommended!

Yelp
First night of our first time in Sydney and stopped by Sambal. We knew it was going to be a good meal from the smell of sauces and spices before we even ordered, and we were not disappointed!! We got a little of everything gulai ayam, rendang, cah kangkung, and beef kabobs with a variety of sides. Everything was so fantastic we finished all of that!! My wife and I agreed the panang curry sauce of the gulai ayam was the star of the show...she was literally eating it like soup by the end!

Yelp
Average Indonesian cafe in Sydney. We ordered the rendang beef, nasi-goreng with chicken and fried egg, the gado-gado, and chicken satay skewers. Flavors are just a-ok compared to the rich flavors and textures we had in Amsterdam Indonesian restaurants. I'd say this is tuned down quite a bit in flavors and spices. Comparing to Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam may be unfair, but considering the huge southeast Asian population in Sydney, I thought the food could be more authentic. The food is average - meat and ingredients freshness, and cooking were ok quality. The rice was so hard that I couldn't swallow. Price is reasonable, but portion is quite small. Plus you pay extra for rice. I'm old school when it comes to Asian cuisine and I know it's not common anymore, but rice should be free or accompanied with main dishes. It's a simple family cafe with good service.

Yelp
We came here for early evening dinner due to the ratings - and they were right. A clean but basic place, a warm welcome and easy men to order from. We ordered calamari, fish fillet and mee goreng with beer and wine. The quality and quantity of the food and drink was excellent. The total cost for 2 was $83 which is very good value - fully recommend.

Yelp
Ordered Mel Gorang, I can say i could not finish the dish...it was so yummy and for sure the quantity is huge. Good service. I went during the weekday lunch time, and it was quite busy time ! Plenty of seating, service is good and price is reasonable. You will be spoiled with too many choices in menu. I would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Cute new hole in the wall Indo restaurant. Simple, but authentic menu at a reasonable price. My new go to place when I'm in town.
