Yelp
Why has no one ever told me about this place??
I love old school restaurants... Those dark, stodgy, old boys' club-looking establishments that actually seem authentic and rather refreshing compared to all of the Instagram-friendly, see-and-be-seen restaurants you see all over LA and OC these days. Sometimes you just want to sit in a corner, down a few cocktails, and tuck into a thick slab of BEEF. That's the name of the game at The San Franciscan.
As a lifelong Southern California resident, born and bred, I hate the name because I hate San Francisco, the Bay Area, and everything associated with NorCal... but this particular San Franciscan is alright in my book. Open since 1963, they've been slinging prime rib for over SIXTY YEARS and it shows! The interior reminded me of a cross between an old steakhouse and an Elk's Lodge... just the type of place you'd expect Boomers to be holding court as they watch their country disintegrate before their very eyes.
All jokes aside, regardless of your age, the service here is great but the food is even better! Shortly after being seated the waitress brings you a hot loaf of sourdough bread with whipped butter: the loaf is crusty on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside, just as sourdough should be. When you're ready to order, just take a look around and it's clear what's the best thing to order here:
PRIME RIB
Now I've never been to the House of Prime Rib in SF, but when it comes to prime rib in Southern California, I've had most of the classics, from Lawry's to Five Crowns, from Gulliver's to Summit House, and even locals' hidden picks like Heritage Family Pantry in Lakewood and Captain Jack's in Sunset Beach. For just $31 for a half pound slab of prime rib, The San Franciscan is KING when it comes to bang for buck. While not as nuanced in flavor and seasoned as the beef from the Lawry's family of restaurants, the House Special Prime Rib here at The San Franciscan is still meaty and flavorful, and a DEAL when you consider that it's a half pound of beef served with a soup or salad and a side of your choice... all for $31!
Besides the main course, we ordered Corkscrew Shrimp ($13) as an appetizer: basically popcorn shrimp served with lemon and sweet & sour sauce. If you're not fussy about what you're served alongside your beef, the sourdough bread, split pea soup, baked potato, and random appetizer accompaniments are more than enough to satisfy a grumbling stomach.
Word to the wise... since the House Special Prime Rib is already half a pound, it'll take an especially voracious eater to tackle the three-quarter pound Franciscan Cut ($38), or the 19 ounce Diamond Jim at $51. If you need to do extra research on the menu before you dine-in, make sure you do so before entering the restaurant... I found cell reception to be especially spotty inside this time warp of an establishment.
A big thanks to the venerable Howie C. for turning me on to this place and initiating me into the old boy's club; they may not hand out gold or green jackets with every meal but you'll certainly feel like a retired Hall of Famer after dining at The San Franciscan!
