The Best Beach Hotels In Southeast Asia That Embrace Local Culture

"The Sanchaya is grand and gleaming, impossibly photogenic at dawn and dusk, the colonial architecture and towering palm trees reflected in the still water of an Olympic-sized infinity pool." - Mark Fedeli

The Best Resorts in Asia: 2018 Readers' Choice Awards

"This 30-room-and-villa property—an imposing colonial mansion with a courtyard and a stone fountain—is serious about doling out a luxury experience. Check-in was done in-room with assistance from a British Butler Institute–trained butler. The suites, too, are handsomely appointed; floors were polished wood, the furniture sleek black bamboo, while antique maps and antiques added a touch of mystery and adventure. It’s Brad Pitt meets Indiana Jones. The beds are comfortable, and staff members are doting. You don’t get this level of luxe anywhere else in Bintan…or even nearby Singapore." - CNT Editors, Betsy Blumenthal

The Sanchaya, Bintan Island, Indonesia - Explore & Book

"Less than an hour by ferry from Singapore lies this stunning colonial-chic estate, billed as Bintan Island’s leading luxury resort. Gable roofed, with white plantation shutters and dramatic dark-wood floors, it’s a tropical fantasy of a boutique hotel, complete with a 50m infinity pool overlooking palm-fringed white sands. If you’re looking for a special-occasion stay, there is simply no better. Inside, you’ll find layer upon layer of breathtaking design, blended from the influence of several Southeast Asian countries. An Indonesian-influenced spa offers Reiki and Thai massages, and waiters deliver pool snacks in hanging baskets suspended from a pole, as is the Vietnamese tradition. The extravagant detail throughout is incredible – especially where guests are concerned. From the moment we boarded the ferry, we were treated like VIPs.All 29 suites and villas combine space with flawless style and comfort: claw-foot tubs and herbal bath salts, sarongs for the beach, personalised stationary for missives home. And in the airy-light Dining Room and cosy-dark Bar, even the food and drink is creative. Start your day with truffle-scented eggs and a visit by the jamu-wallah for a shot of traditional Indonesian tonic; end it with pink margharitas and Thai street food under the stars, followed by liquid-nitrogen ice cream. Mind-blowing all round. Highs Sunrise yoga in an open-sided garden pavilionImmaculate bedrooms with complimentary minibars and an iPad of movies Staff are a delight; as friendly or unobtrusive as you needThrilling activities include blokarting on the beach and night mangrove tours to watch iridescent firefliesHugely romantic, but surprisingly family friendly too, with lots of space for everyone Lows Hardly a low, but this is such a haven it’s hard not to just ferry-and-flop and miss the island’s activities and cultureMosquitos and sand flies – bring repellent with DEET" - Catharine Nicol

The Sanchaya (Bintan, Indonesia) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Ah, paradise — just a hop, skip and a jump away. Well, for non-locals, just a flight to Singapore, then a 15-minute drive to the ferry terminal, then a 45-minute boat ride to the island of Bintan, then another 15-minute drive to the north shore. We won’t pretend otherwise: the Sanchaya is far away from everything. But the remoteness is part of its appeal. And the path to this particular paradise goes a bit faster and smoother than it would if you were staying in some other resort. The Sanchaya handles express immigration and customs clearance, and has a private VIP lounge in the ferry terminal. In other words, you’ll be relaxing with tea or champagne while someone deals with your paperwork." - Tablet Hotels
