The Best Restaurants and Bars in North Beach, San Francisco | Eater SF

"This destination for live music and stiff drinks opened in 1907, beginning a storied history punctuated with landmark events like debuting San Francisco’s Beach Blanket Babylon in 1974 and appearances by the Ramones in 1976. The venue reopened after a few years of closure in 2022 and is packed with cocktails and crowds once again, hosting local musical acts such as the Tuesday People on the regular." - Paolo Bicchieri

The 117-Year-Old Savoy Tivoli Is Finally Reopening - Eater SF

"The Savoy Tivoli, originally opened in 1906 at 1434 Grant Avenue, is set to reopen after closing during the pandemic. The 117-year-old restaurant and bar is a veritable San Francisco institution: the Ramones played at the bar in 1976; it was the original home of the city’s holiday special “Beach Blanket Babylon;” and it’s situated a block from the original publishing location of City Lights. According to Tablehopper, the restaurant and bar will reopen after finishing up final inspections by the health department. The current owners, Tito Avila and Paul Kozel, took over from Kozel’s mother who passed away in 2021. Designer Craige Walters, who is responsible for the swanky luxurious decor of the Tenderloin’s Black Cat and Civic Center’s now-closed August 1 Five, took on the redesign for the space. David Sabo is the new general manager who worked with the team to launch 13 cocktails, three low-ABV options, and three nonalcoholic drinks. Opening hours and an official reopening date are still in the works." - Paolo Bicchieri

Live music venue featuring a full bar and a sushi menu. Their window seats give a full view of all the interesting people traversing the heart of North Beach, Grant Ave.

Amazing neighborhood spot that captures the essence of north beach San Francisco. The bar service and knowledge is top notch and the live music and vibes are stellar.

Great cocktails, music, and good vibes! On a hot day before the music starts they open their large windows. The band last night was great!

This bar is near my apartment and therefore I regularly come here. I come to play pool, watch sporting events, specifically the UFC fight cards. I have also came to watch live music, and to attend comedy shows. The bartenders are very friendly. A shoutout to Giovanni who went above and beyond with his customer service to my girlfriend and I on a Saturday morning when we went to watch the UFC Abu Dhabi card. I highly recommend this place. I take friends and family here whenever they visit.

Yelp
After having brunch at a nearby location, my friends and I decided to explore the area and discover new bars. That's when we stumbled upon Savoy Tivoli. As soon as we entered, we were greeted with warm smiles, which I always take as a sign of excellent service--and it truly was! My group ordered three espresso martinis, and I can confidently say the martini I had was a solid 5/5. The ambiance of the place has a tiki vibe, with palm trees and dim lighting, making it perfect for a date night. The bar tender suggested we go to the back of the bar where we found a free pool table and a Bluetooth speaker for our use, which is a rarity in San Francisco. Overall, I was very impressed with the experience and will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Music was amazing 6/14/25. Love the country band. They played a lot of variety and it was a good time dancing. Sushi was 10/10!!! Chef Wilder is awesome! The 49ers roll was one of the best rolls I've had in SF!
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
Drinks were pretty good! There was some salsa dancing event going on! Seemed pretty fun! Service is great, bar tender made really good mocktails for us.

Yelp
Savoy Trivoli 1434 Grant Ave, SF No cover, live music, good food, pool tables, multiple dining areas in back area away from the bar area. Near Grant and Green. If after work get together, cool place to hang out, different sections for dining away from initimate stage / dance floor as well as individual seating or 3 chairs / table recessed in back from traditional island bar setup.

Yelp
Used to like this place before the retrofit, recently revisited having forgotten that what was great about the old place, namely the terrace-like area next to the street, was now gone. We decided to have a drink anyway and succumbed to the barman's enthusiastic promotion of the daily drink special -- an hibiscus margarita. Sounded great, so we ordered two. Should have checked the price as when the bill came couldn't believe they were $15 each. Now, I live in San Francisco and know that drinks can be expensive, but this is just gouging. They weren't even large glasses. *Update in response to the owner's response below: As I made clear I live in San Francisco, and know the costs of drinks. $15 for a very underwhelming cocktail that as being pushed as a "special" is expensive. This is a pretty average bar, not a high-end specialist cocktail lounge, and for a special I'd expect a drink to be reasonably priced. North Beach is known for catering to bridge and tunnel tourists, and the response from the owner speaks volumes. Justifiable criticism of overpriced drinks is "trying to harm their business". Won't be returning.

Yelp
This bar has an amazing vibe--perfect for a night out! The drinks are top-notch, and the live music adds to the lively atmosphere. Be sure to ask for Lanzo; he makes an excellent Old Fashioned and will take great care of you for the night!! 10/10

Yelp
Friendly, good cocktail menu, live music sometimes. Live Jazz third Sundays 4-7. Friendly bartenders. Cool vibe

Yelp
This is a great place for a drink with amazing vibes. Drinks here were about $13-15 for a cocktail. Went with some of my girlfriends for a drink on a rainy Friday night and the place was pretty empty. The bartender was really nice and got us our drinks quickly. My friend really liked her expresso martini. The music here was great and we asked them if we could dance a little on stage and queue up some songs, they were very friendly and accommodating and it was nice to be the only ones in the bar as it got to closing time. The place has a room with a stage and another room with an additional bar and seating, there is also a pool table in the back. Overall a happy experience and a fun night!

Yelp
Amazing fun. The bartender, David is the best!!!! He is so nice and service was fantastic!

Yelp
We visited the newly renovated Savoy Tivoli on New Year's Eve for a comedy show, and enjoyed the high-spirited and easygoing atmosphere. It appears to be two separate rooms/venues, each with their own bar and style, and separate entrances (which can be a bit confusing). But inside they are attached through a doorway, with restrooms only on one side, which looks more like a nightclub scene with a lounge area (they were playing hip hop music this past Saturday), whereas the room that held the comedy show has a stage, some tables and seating, and a bar at the center, a decent event space. The architecture and decor throughout is beautiful, quirky artwork, arches along the walls, art deco lamps hanging from ceilings, palm trees and sculptures adding a nice touch to the overall setting, and of course dim and colorful lighting to set the mood. We enjoyed the comedy show as one of our stops for the night, and the drinks were decent (apparently they have an updated cocktail menu). The place was clean and looked brand new, even though I know it's really 117 years old (as of the start of 2023). All of the staff were friendly and eager to help while we were there. Only downside to our experience was the wait for drinks. It wasn't horrible, and we could see the bartenders hustling to serve patrons, but there was just 1-2 of them per bar (on New Year's Eve!), and even though it wasn't super crowded for the night (yet), service was just slow compared to what I'm used to at other bars/events.

Yelp
Dear Yelpers, I wanted to provide an update to my last review. I have spoken to the owners and they have apologized and even asked to refund a portion of my transaction and I politely declined. I know it is a bit late of an update as this happened 5 months ago but I appreciate them taking the time to read my feedback. They have acknowledged that they can do better and that is what we all hope for. I hope their security team is provided with better training on how to handle difficult situations and they are able to learn to communicate better internally and externally.

Yelp
Great place for a quick drink and live music. I had the espresso martini which was delicious and not overly strong. Listened to a jazz band which was really good.

Peter T.

Yelp
Nice ambiance good drinks live music. Fun stop Grant Greene. ha! Would recommend on a Sunday afternoon

Yelp
Delightful place to hang out and have a cocktail on a rainy afternoon! Great service and vibe.

Yelp
This is a great bar for coming in for a quick drink. The open windows and seating keeps the place feeling fresh and clean, there's heaters inside so if you feel chilled, you can sit right underneath one and stay warm, and the bartenders are super friendly and knowledgeable about what they have on tap. We've come in a few times to relax and chill out a bit while wandering North Beach, and even to bring in food from elsewhere to have a drink while eating.

Amiga D.

Yelp
Don't go when they have live music because it is WAY, WAY too loud. Since the space was renovated, the space is all hard surfaces and the sound mix and general decibel level iwas absolutely intolerable. We left as soon as we finished our drinks and a bunch of other people obviously did too. For the record, I like live music a lot and see a ton of live music. It's not me. Bartender was not very nice and knowingly gave me something other than what I ordered and when I said "that's not what I ordered," he said that they were out of what I ordered. Not the right way to deal with that issue. Also, $10 for a beer is not what the menu said (which was $8) and is a ridiculous price for a beer, even in SF.

Yelp
We went to Savoy Trivoli for the LaughGPT show. SHOW: The show was a solid B. Nothing spectacular. They are local comics (no one you've heard of), and its fun to see them give it a good effort. But its really not hysterical. Think lots of forced laughs. DRINKS: There's a two drink minimum at the show. We bought the VIP tickets and were right front and center at the stage. The chairs and tables are so packed in this little venue that it was nearly impossible to put in our required drink orders during the show to the pestering waitress standing 8+ feet away in the isle. I think nearly 10 people's viewing of the show was interrupted to hear me order a Manhattan. BATHROOMS: Ample and easy to access. LOCATION: In the heart of North Beach. If you are going to drive, plan on finding a parking space 4+ blocks away.

Yelp
Swung by on Tuesday for Karaoke and it was the funny Tuesday night I needed. Good time overall.

Yelp
Love their salsa Thursdays! Amazing live band! The whole place is great if you're looking for a great way to start the weekend early. The vibes the people the whole place is an experience you'll never forget all in the heart of little Italy
google avatar

Carlos B.

Yelp
Salsa Thursday's with Rene Escovedo and Son Sabroso was great last night and looks to be the start of a really good gig. The band has an awesome sound that OG salseros will appreciate. Venue is invitingly and cool.

Tony T.

Yelp
Wonderful venue with old school vibe . Great drinks and conversations with locals and staff. Movie night, salsa Thursdays all very special and truly love this place. Sabrina , Abraham, Luke at the bar make you feel at home and Dolly manages with such a cool touch that you spend wonderful evenings and nights as time flies by. Bar music is on point and great mix and bonus are the two pool tables!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Watched a Hella Funny comedy show here last month, good drinks too, stand-up at it's best

Ky L.

Yelp
Really nice vibe, super sweet staff, good drinks! Served one of the best cocktails I've had in a while. Came in for my friend's 21st birthday and everyone was super kind. They had a pool table close to the bar and it was honestly so perfect! Right in the middle of everything and close to the bar. Played a game, got a few drinks, will definitely be coming back!

Lily H.

Yelp
Amazing and friendly service! Bianca is a star, and Sabrina is such a sweetheart and great manager. Maggie is super awesome, as is the rest of the entire staff! I wish every bar was like this place. They have a fun trivia night on Thursdays and great bands on Friday and Saturdays. It gets pretty crowded, though. Great place to meet people ;)

Yelp
Delighted the Savoy Tivoli has reopened. Quintessential North Beach Bohemian Class. A remarkable history that will continue to be made. A wonderful and unique live music venue.

Blyth G.

Yelp
After noticing on instagram that Savoy Tivoli was open in the morning and serving coffee, I decided to stop by on a Saturday morning. I original was going to get a regular latte but then noticed the sign for Irish coffee so I had to try it. The Irish coffee was definitely strong but was very tasty. Service was great and place was very low key in the morning which I enjoyed. Swing by in the morning for regular coffee drink or something more strong. Also they allow outside food in which is plus!

Yelp
Always a great location, especially on the 'patio' when the weather is nice. Bartender's are very good and always friendly.

Kathleen K.

Yelp
Americano Social Club's Family Ruckus at the Savoy Tívoli on 1st Fridays is the best! When you combine great musicians, wonderful singers, belly dancers, and a drink or two, everyone ends up having a great time.
google avatar

Martin V.

Yelp
The bartender with see through yellow glasses is the worst. He would not help out my girlfriend. Someone even mentioned that she was waiting first so he would help her and he purposefully decided to help someone else. I am never going again. What an ***

Ethan S.

Yelp
For as many gay people who show up, the bartenders only serve straight-presenting people

Yelp
The Savoy Tivoli has reopened! Come down and join the fun! Experience a taste of old San Francisco.

Yelp
This was the spot during the nineties. I must've gone there at least 50-60 times. The place had a great vibe with a mix of regulars and non-regulars, the drinks were cheap and they stayed open late. I lived closer to Union Square but had no problems making my way (even walking) to North Beach for this S.F. drinking mainstay. It was one of those places that was popular but not trendy. I remember my friends and I lamenting about the changing demographic in SF during the Dot-Com boom of the nineties. We were glad to see that The Savoy and not been completely invaded by the techy horde. There were some, but thankfully most stayed away (no disrespect intended to those in tech). It's funny how history repeats itself. With the current tech-boom changing the SF landscape once again, I was surprised to see how quiet the bar was on a Saturday night. A friend and I arrived right when they opened and stayed there for a few hours. I told that the place would probably get going after 10:00 pm. By the time we left after 11:00 it was only half full. It could have filled up later, but it didn't seem like it would. One of those party busses that looked like a cable car stopped right in front. About thirty drunk and loud, but happy folks stepped out and entered the bar. I read some reviews that The Savoy had closed down for a while and then reopened. I'm not sure if this was why they weren't busy on warm Saturday night, but it did feel different. I loved that place and wanted to take my friend there. Alas it was not like it was, even though it looked the same. But it was quiet enough so that we could talk and have a few drinks. I'd go back if I was in the area. One small thing, as another reviewer mentioned, they do need to clean their beer taps. My pint of Stella was sour/stale and I switched to mixed drinks. Not sure of the joint is under new ownership/management but that should never happen. My advice to them is get that handled. A good bar still, but you only serve drinks, don't screw that up.

Kaitlyn T.

Yelp
The drinks here sucked I will not be returning. The place across the street was way better

Chloe H.

Yelp
We had some of the worst margaritas of my life here. It was super slow barely anyone there, and our drinks took about 15 minutes and the bartenders were just standing there talking before they even attempted our drinks.

Analysa C.

Yelp
Love savoy. Most underrated bar in North Beach. The ambiance is amazing and the drinks are so good. Service is pretty fast too. Even on a crowded night.

Yelp
Went to their soft launch December 9th and had the best night. Wish I knew the band they had the whole place up and dancing. Loved the drinks/ energy/ and atmosphere. my go-to spot

Yelp
This is a great place for music. I love the ambience.! Very nice waitstaff also. Locals love this place.

Yelp
This is your classy "kitty bar." It's where 21 year olds learn how to drink alcohol in a social setting. You can also tell it's a kitty bar because all the young un's in this bar are having quite coherent conversations despite the unnecessarily loud level of noise from the music the play. Way too loud. Why does the volume have to be on 10? Still, there is one part of the bar where you can breathe the rushing outside, foggy San Franciscan air off of Grant Avenue. The bartendress was fairly friendly by San Franciscan standards. The beers weren't too over priced and they had a decent selection. I had a couple of Coronas and she even remembered to include a lime. Not bad. The crowd here are ironically very innocent looking. At my age, I felt as if I walked into a G-rated movie with a bunch of little children, wearing make up pretending to act like adults. I swear to you, the people here are too young. I think the City of San Francisco should change the drinking age to 40 and over.
google avatar

Genevieve M.

Yelp
This place is a joke. Don't bother with coming here. Horrible service horrible drinks. Always mostly empty.

Natalie N.

Yelp
Just reopened! Great vibes drinks and live music. Definitely going to come more often

Analysa C.

Yelp
I really wanna love this classic bar and with that being said-- both times I've been, my drinks were messed up and/or things weren't available for what I would consider a basic drink (hot toddy and mudslide). I WILL say the bartenders were super nice. I would assume it's not their fault that they didn't have a fully stocked bar. BUT it would be nice if at the very least there was hot water and Irish cream available.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Best bar in San Francisco. Enough space to avoid sharing oxygen with the riff raff and yuppies, but compact enough to where you still feel like you're with the *it* crowd. There's 2 separate bars, tables to bring your own food and eat at, pool tables and enough eclectic decor to play a different game of eye spy every time you come visit. You can get no-frills cocktails and take them over to San Francisco's hidden gem of a dance floor, complete with disco lights and lasers. -1 Star because they recently revoked their policy of play your own music on the bar speakers, and Javier, the neighborhood friendly bartender, no longer works there. But that still won't prevent me from starting the night off at Savoy anytime I'm in North Beach. Put your name in at Tony's down the street and head here to pass the time while you wait. You can't miss it.

Yelp
Savoy Tivoli has an owner who cares about customer concerns and an amazing atmosphere, unique for San Francisco. After expressing my displeasure with a specific bartender not honoring a happy hour deal, the owner was quick to resolve the situation and was quick to re-educate his staff on the importance of quality customer service. While at the bar on a Saturday night (around 10:30pm), me and a group of friends were sitting at a table and I offered to go buy some drinks. A friend had asked for a glass of white wine so I went up and purchased two glasses of wine. The total was $16 and I tipped $3, all cash. When I came back to the table, we were just chatting and my friend asked if I got the deal on the wine. What deal? My friend pointed out the main reason she got a glass of wine was because it was supposed to be $5. Looking around, there was a promotion being promoted on pretty much every table in the bar. "All glass of wine - $5, 8pm-12am." Seeing as the bar wasn't too busy, I went up and told the bartender who served me that I hadn't received the deal. He said the promotion was not going tonight and that it shouldn't be on the table. I asked for a refund of the difference and was denied. I then asked if a discount or small pour of another drink could be given instead to make up for the difference. The bartender said he could not provide anything cause "the boss is watching on the security cameras." The bartender at the Patio bar who said his name was Javier would not admit a mistake on behalf of the bar and would not apologize for the false advertising. I asked to speak with a manager and was refused by Javier because the boss was "on the roof" and would not come down. I asked if he would at least take the other deal placards off the tables so as to not mislead other customers and he said he was too busy (there was nobody waiting to be helped during our conversation, but there were people sitting/standing at the bar with drinks). I asked if this is really how little they care about customer service, and at that point, he may have apologized saying there was nothing he could do. By going around Javier, I was finally able to get in touch with the manager/owner. He was very receptive and offered my refund and a much more personal and friendly experience on my next return. Aside from this one bartender, Savoy Tivoli is a very special place for San Francisco. For those of you looking for a unique atmosphere, this is the place. The open patio in the front is a pretty cool space. It's like an indoor patio with large, open windows that is amazing on a nice night like when I was there. It reminds me of sitting at a cafe patio in Italy or Spain and is great for a relaxing drink after work or before going out to dinner in North Beach. I will be back.

Yelp
Our friends were looking for a chill option on a crazy, beautiful night when the Giants were playing on TV and they ended up at Savoy Tivoli. We joined them after dinner and we didn't really know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find our friends sitting in this awesome indoor/ outdoor patio area in this very chill spot on Grant Street. The place was perfect for a warm city night to have some drinks and conversation without normal indoor voices. I always appreciate it when places aren't too loud. We only got beers - I wouldn't say the place looked known for cocktails. Quickly the spot filled up with folks getting drinks before going out for a wilder night and that was our queue to leave. The place is surprisingly large. In addition to that indoor/outdoor with plenty of seating, there was a back room with a pool table, another seating area, and then a whole dance floor and other side with a giant bar. It makes me curious to know what the place is like as a dance club...

Yelp
What happened to The Savoy? This was THE SPOT back in the day. It was always completely packed every weekend. So much so that we north beachers would actually make sure to avoid it. This was the birthplace of Beach Blanket Babylon. The first run was here, before they got the Club Fugazi space a couple of blocks away. And despite being predisposed to being overrun w tourists, euro trash, & people that could not hold their alcohol, The Savoy was still an institution. It was still a place I was sure to bring my girlfriends when they came to visit from out of town. That was the thing w this place; we avoided it, but we still respected it. There was a big problem w noise a few years back. Apparently, several neighborhood residents complained & complained. I never understood this. If you want peace & quiet, then you shouldn't move near a bar. Common sense, right? They were temporarily shut down. So, consequently, today they're only allowed to have live music for a very limited amount of hours a month. Sad. It's all about that front patio. Totally romantic, sexy, & european. It's still to this day a chronic movie scene to be sitting on this patio, wearing a slinky dress, sipping a cocktail. Preferably while smoking a cigarette. Think "A Streetcar Named Desire." The mystique is still here. It has that cafe swank & dive bar thing down. The patio for the former, the second barroom for the latter. It would be great if the Savoy could pick itself up & be a player in the hood again. The history & the space deserve that. I know I'm not the only one that misses it. 3 stars.

Yelp
My wife and I met here on our first date. We sat on the patio, talking, drinking a couple of pints, sheltering under the heaters in the cool March air. Later that night, we walked down Grant Street and had a wonderfully romantic dinner at Viva's. So you hate the frat boys and the pseudo blonde tramps walking around this place? F**k 'em... Why don't you just grab yourself a pint or some other elixir, put a dollar in the jukebox, play some tunes, maybe shoot some pool, or just relax and enjoy. You're in San Francisco, in North Beach, in a cool bar that's been around a hundred years, before the beatniks were even born! Just enjoy it, baby.... There you go, it's all good.
google avatar

Gloria H.

Yelp
Friends wanted to hear some music but unfortunately we only got to hear their last set for about 20-30 minutes. The band is good and lots of fun - friends enjoyed it so much, reminded them of New Orleans. The beer was a little colder than our last visit so some improvement.

Yelp
I was having a night out with my friends and we were bar hopping in the area; this bar was one of our stops. The place has a good amount of pool tables/things to do other then just sit around and drink. But even if that's your thing, they do have plenty of tables to go around. The bar area can get pretty tight and the bartenders aren't very nice ... not to mention that it's CASH ONLY. It isn't a place I would think about going to first for bar hopping or to stay at an entire night, but it is a good place to stop at in the middle of your bar hopping fun.

Yelp
Awesome place to listen to jazz on a Saturday afternoon!!! Great band and nice crowd. The cocktail waitress we had was very out of touch with her job, but she was nice enough. My biggest bummer is that it's a cash only bar. Cash??? That's crazy.
