The Sentinel – Marfa, Texas - Gastro Obscura

"Between 2004 and 2018, almost 1,800 local newspapers across the United States went out of print. The Big Bend Sentinel of Marfa, Texas, however, is not one of them. After 100 years in print, the paper is toasting to the next century of coverage with renovations that include a cafe and a cocktail bar. After the longtime owners sold the business to Maisie Crow and Max Kabat, the pair of New York transplants opted to diversify the longstanding paper’s income. They relocated the paper’s offices to a recently shuttered dive bar in the heart of town, which had been a funeral home before that. After extensive sage-burning and renovations, the newspaper-cafe-cocktail bar is a masterpiece of desert-minimalist interior design. Partial stucco walls received a splash of blinding white paint, dramatizing the building’s original adobe brick laid behind it. A high, pale wooden ceiling gives the space levity, while rustic, earth-toned Scandinavian furniture invites visitors to get comfortable. Desert plants, Southwestern rugs, and local art tie it all together and remind you that it’s still Texas. It’s painstakingly Instagrammable without sacrificing a touch of dignity. There’s also food. To serve as an anytime-locale for the town’s 1,700 residents, the cafe (also named The Sentinel) serves not only coffee and baked goods, but cocktails, tacos, and pozole. A slew of local artisans, remote workers, and a handful of full-time reporters from the building’s adjoining newsroom will bounce in and out throughout the day while visitors lounge on gorgeous leather furniture and scarf down breakfast burritos. Supporting local journalism doesn’t have to be a chore. None" - stefaniemklett, notoriousFIG, Patron Editor, lukefater

Aesthetically, it embodies desert chic at its best. As one of the few places (if not only) that are open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Wednesday in Marfa – it gets the job done. The beverages are excellent. The breakfast is ok. It’s a beautiful place to linger, work from a laptop or write in a journal. I appreciate that it alerts patrons that food/bev purchases support the local newspaper it produces. Print is NOT dead – in Marfa, Tx.

Google
Beautiful coffee shop & working space. We had a pit stop in Marfa and decided to head over to Sentinel to grab some food. The place is vibrant, airy, and open. There's also tons of goodies, some from local artisans that you can purchase from. The coffee and food menu looks amazing! The Spanish latte and tacos we tried were delicious. Loved looking around at this space and all the design & art that the city has offer.

Google
The Sentinel in Marfa is a must-visit spot for breakfast. We stopped in and were not disappointed. We ordered the Breakfast Plate, which comes with two eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast with organic jam – everything was cooked perfectly and hit the spot. We also tried the Breakfast Taco with potato, egg, and bacon, and it was fantastic. The Golden Milk Latte was a standout – a delicious blend of cayenne, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, honey, espresso, and whole milk. It was flavorful and warming, a perfect complement to the meal. We finished off breakfast with a chocolate chip cookie that was absolutely delicious. Get them while they last! The vibe at The Sentinel is relaxing, making it a great place to start your day. Don’t forget to pick up a copy of the local newspaper while you’re there. If you’re in Marfa, make sure to check this place out.

Great coffee flavor, friendly staff, great service. If you are in town, it is a must for early coffee.

Google
Sadly, more hype and appearance than substance😢. Food was mediocre at best, coffee watery, potatoes in the tacos and as side dish were not cooked thoroughly, barely any egg in the breakfast tacos and salsa was bland, toast barely warm. One good thing was hot chocolate🤗. Merchandise was way too precious and pretty pricey. Hate to say it, but would not go again.

Excellent breakfast, signature lattes, and curation of local goods. Lots of seating at tables and also sofas and chairs.

Google
Perfect breakfast and lunch spot. Quick and friendly service. Definitely adding this spot to my favorites list.

Google
Interesting place with a small inventory of books and items for sale, with counter service and indoor/outdoor seating. Beautiful space. Food was pretty good, as was the people-watching. Five stars because we’re fans of local journalism.

Yelp
Okay got here on a rainy Sunday morning and became instantly OBSESSED with their vibe. Music was indie chill and it wasn't too packed to the point where I felt uncomfortable, but just enough people vibing drinking their coffee and hanging on their laptops that made this place feel like a cozy spot to park for a bit. In the middle of their room they advertise merch for brilliant art books, t-shirts for the local newspaper, and other fun trinkets you can take home as souvenirs for family, friends, and yourself! I didn't get a chance to try any of their food since it was later in the day and their specials were out (bummer!) but their iced matcha latte was one of the best I've ever had and my husbands iced coffee was delicious. They also carry coconut milk which is a huuuuge bonus for me! If I'm ever back in Marfa, I would 100% come back here for a morning matcha and brew literally everyday.

Yelp
Got here at 11:30 and various teas, lunch menu items and pastries were already sold out. Tried the lavender latte and the chicken quesidalla which were both wonderful, but it took over 30 mins to receive my food. The ambience is great and I liked looking at the various items and books they have on display. Would have rated this place 4 stars because food and coffee was great but just waited way too long for my food.

Yelp
Great service, an easy space to navigate with kids, and a crowd pleasing menu. The outdoor space is pretty and comfortable, and people of a certain age can reminisce about visiting when the building housed Padre's.

Yelp
$6 for a over cooked 3 bite tiny taco gets you a bad review. This place is a scam! Go somewhere else

Yelp
The spacious, high-ceilinged store/cafe exudes dessert vibes with leather couches and communal tables to sit on. The interior design is impressive, with a small shop and inviting goods on sale. The cafe offers coffees and full breakfasts. Coffee and food are all decent. The women working there are quite kind and friendly. Definitely worth the visit for the ambiance - and perfect if you want to hang around and work or chat for a while.

Yelp
The Sentinel Marfa is dependable with good drinks, food, and air conditioning. Is it a hot day and you can't find somewhere that's open in Marfa? Head over to the Sentinel to be happy & comfortable.

Yelp
Ate here during the Marfa lights festival and every plate that came out was amazing. We had chile relleno plate and pozole and it was so delicious.
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
Had an absolutely delicious breakfast here. They do not have gluten free toast as an option but were happy to swap the toast for an avocado. So many different spots to sit, cute chairs, big tables, and outdoor seating. Have some fun trinkets, books, shirts, and local art for sale as well. Great spot in the funky town of Marfa!

Yelp
Love the casual ambiance of this huge space. Nice relaxing hippie-dippie folk music, Art supplies, pottery, blankets, feminista books, comphy couches. $6 breakfast tacos (aka burritos) in Marfa, demonstrate not everything is bigger in Texas. Three bites it's gone. Quality is ok, but it's served with sauce so mild as to be tasteless. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. Definitely worth the quick breakfast stop over a generic gas station experience.

Yelp
They recently posted a sign outdoors that said no pets :( So that was a bummer. Other than that, the ambiance of this place was lovely. Cool knick nacks and aesthetics, but we got their specialities coffees - spanish coffee and the one with turmeric, forgot the name. Turmeric sat completely at the bottom which made it tough to drink and the Spanish needed one more shot to balance out the milk/coffee flavor in my opinion

Yelp
Ambiance could be improved by the servers improving their attitude. The young woman with the nose ring (she wouldn't provide her name and was extremely rude when asked) was amazingly rude. She was not inviting and really had a very serious attitude. She went so far as to say she hopes we have e a better day than we've had?!?! Food was great! Cocktails were delicious! Atmosphere was really unique and interesting. Just turned off by this nose ring woman.

Yelp
I recently took my first trip to Marfa & stayed 2 nights. Two days in a row, I visited the Sentinel. This place is wonderful. The inside is airy, welcoming & comfy. Ample couches & chairs up front, more in the back & tables outside as well. Groovy, laid back vibes throughout. On my first visit I tried the Spanish latte & a chorizo breakfast taco. The taco was spicy & hearty. The latte was so good I had another. On my second visit I stuck with the Spanish latte but tried a Clementine almond cake that was moist & tasty. The woman at the counter (both visits) was nice & efficient. The food came out quickly & I have a feeling that anything on the menu would be just as good as what I tried. Next time I'll stay longer, maybe try some pancakes or a breakfast plate. Honestly, I could have easily sat there all day. I will absolutely come back the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
AMAZING coffee! I wish we could have stopped in more than once. Great aesthetic inside and out as well. We walked in and noticed there was more seating in the back and an outside area as well. Coffee was out in no time and we were helped by an awesome guy at the register. Bought one of their newspapers as well, great merch!

Yelp
Unfortunately, it just wasn't good. The breakfast food was average and some of it was burnt while other parts were cold. The space is really cool and service was fine, but it fell short for me.
google avatar

Trina W.

Yelp
Nice spot to relax, get some work done or visit with friends. They do have a small menu of food items and coffee and a few other drinks. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

Yelp
The Spanish latte and the ambiance were great! It's such a cool little store, and I loved the building itself. We had food (which was pretty good) and sat for an hour, just soaking up the atmosphere. They have a small quantity of curated books and items that I really enjoyed checking out. Staff was friendly. Overall, it's absolutely a must visit place!

Yelp
Sensational setting, great coffee, good breakfast, neat souvineers. We really loved this place! Big and spacious and very affordable for our large group. Our kids liked it so much they returned the next day!

Yelp
Wife found this place. We are traveling the country and stopping at smaller mom and pop locations. Super cute inside. Doesn't feel like I'm in the middle of nowhere. We ordered the barbacoa tacos. You get three street style tacos. Easily the best tacos I've had in a very long time. They know how to make them. I ate them faster than I could take a picture! Luckily my wife got a pic for me! We also ordered some sandwiches. The bread was fresh and delicious. The cuts of meat aren't cheap. Arugula. Fresh. They are on the smaller side of things but they pack a flavor punch! Everything we had was top notch and this place is highly recommended if you ever find yourself in Marfa TX. They even are dog friendly!!

Yelp
Pros - Loved the interior space, very inviting and lots of place to sit and talk Cons - Ordered Chai Tea and they were out of Chai???. Staff suggested another type and it wasn't for me, but that's OK. - A bit pricey - long lines

Yelp
Cute spot. Adorable interior. Sweet staff. Recommend if you're visiting town. Nice menu assortment, lacking in the salad department, but nice options of coffee and lunch items.

Shruti S.

Yelp
tldr: food (2 or 3/5), drinks (4.5), ambiance (5/5), service (3/5) . Good: I got the barbacoa tacos and the best description I can give is that it tasted half cooked. It wasn't piping hot, the taco was soft instead of cooked (maybe warmed but almost right out of the bag), and it wasn't flavorful. My parents got the eggplant sandwich didn't like it. They are premade and not heated up. Again, feels half-cooked. Drinks: The coffee drinks are solid. Ambiance: Such a beautiful, relaxing, cozy interior. Seems like a lot of creatives come here to get work done and chat. There's many small business pieces which is cute to see as well. Service: Kind but slow.

Rachel B.

Yelp
Very tasty coffee! I'm not a big "small coffee house " coffee drinker. Mainly because a lot of places use cardboard cups and I can taste the cardboard idk it's something with me so , I always struggle enjoying coffee. It's often bitter or extremely sweet no in between. But ! I got an oat milk mocha , and it was so good ! So smooth and tasty and it was just the perfect temp. The girl who was there helping me is so sweet and I love the ambience , love the rotating menu as well very cool concept . As a visitor from Miami where we are known for coffee 10/10 love and recommend it is a Marfa institution .

Yelp
Very hip-industrial establishment...clean and everyone here is super friendly. We've mainly come here for their amazing coffee but we've tried their breakfast tacos and they were very tasty. Great place right next to Saint George Hotel to grab an amazing cup of Joe!!

Yelp
The very first place we stopped in Marfa. I have never had a Lavender Late before but it was wildly delicious. My husband got a breakfast plate and a black coffee. We loved the ambiance and the $1 newspapers you can buy! It was like a little time capsule but yet still trendy and modern. We will absolutely be back each morning we are in Marfa! See you tomorrow Sentinel!
google avatar

Lindsey H.

Yelp
A great coffee shop to hang out in. We loved it so much we went twice during our stay in Marfa! The food is excellent as well; I ordered the steak torta and enjoyed it sitting outside on the dog friendly patio.
google avatar

Gigi E.

Yelp
Man! Best coffeee everrrr! I love the cool ambiance of The Sentinel. It's a relaxed and nicely decorated vibe. Although I ordered the chilled brew it was great. Husband said his was of the best Americano's he'd ever had. So there you go. Good coffee. Good vibe. Boom.

Yelp
I was blown away by how much good food we got to enjoy in Marfa but 2 places particularly stood out - The Sentinel being one of them. Everything we tried here from coffee to lunch entrees was absolutely delicious! Service was friendly and the space is spectacular. With seating options both indoors and outdoors, you can choose your environment. They've created a comfortable place you can hang out all day. The decor is chic and the store collection reflects a similar style. If you have time for only one dining experience while in Marfa, make it The Sentinel!
google avatar

Nathan B.

Yelp
Amazing spot. Historic looking building with incredible food and pretty decent coffee! Highly recommend
google avatar

Yelp
We came in for coffee in the morning. There was only one barista working, so it wasn't ideal if you're in a hurry. I ordered the seasonal drink, which I think was a blood orange latte. It was a nice drink. The space is big, and the back has even more seating. It's a great place to hang out.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food, great service, friendly staff Would return. The decor was great. Had books for purchase and other nick nacks
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
Great coffee, breakfast, friendly service. We got there too late to have the tacos (sold out) so we had the breakfast plate. The salsa was amazing! I could have that on my eggs every morning.
google avatar

Yelp
Great breakfast and coffee drinks. They take credit cards which is a plus in Marfa. Haven't tried lunch yet. Classy place! Plus wifi!
google avatar

Yelp
Great breakfast place when visiting Marfa. Coffee is really good as well as their food. Fresh and huge portions. Don't forget to try the pastries

Yelp
My girlfriend and I came in at 2:45 on a weekday, rushing to get there before they closed as we knew it closed at 3:00. I was excited to visit on several different levels: it is in an old building that once housed an awesome bar I found many years ago, and the concept of combining a newspaper, a bar, and a coffee shop is simply a fantastic idea (I come from a newspaper family and I remain a fiend for print). We walked up to the counter to order drinks and a copy of the latest news, and we were told that they could not serve us because it was too close to closing time. In looking around, we saw several tables where people were obviously just starting their meals/drinks. We had just driven 7 hours to get there, yet the employee remained firm. This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that is contributing to Marfa becoming a place not to visit. I will save my rant on property values and property taxes driving out the locals for another forum, but this approach to customer service is an indicator of what this town is becoming. I really wish our experience there could have been more positive. At the end of the day, why should they care when another tourist will be there tomorrow?

Yelp
I absolutely love this place -- it has my whole heart. After starting my career as a local newspaper journalist, the idea of supporting a local paper with your coffee/beer/snack money is genius, and one I would hope to see adopted elsewhere. Such a lovely environment, great food, good people. Elsewhere in Marfa, we found rude and shortstaffed restaurants. This stood out from the crowd. Please support this place!

Mallorie T.

Yelp
COFFEE IS SO GOOD. Smooth, warm and cozy. Not too strong. They have a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating, but not a lot of outlets, bring your devices charged.

Marjorie H.

Yelp
More of a breakfast, baked goods, coffee shop than full range lunch spot. Great coffee choices. Clearly people were there to stake out wi/fi so seating for folks eating was share big tables. Otherwise couches.

R W.

Yelp
Best coffee I've ever had. Hands down, the best cappuccino. Cool place, lots of charm. Breakfast is always great. It's a little pricey for a taco but it's not where you're from it's where you're at.

Pedro L.

Yelp
Perfect lunch. Excellent food. Plenty of space to stretch out and work on your laptop.
google avatar

Giena L.

Yelp
LOVE the aesthetic of this spot, which is also where the newspaper heralds from. Lots of home goods, apparel and jewels to check out with Marfa prices (read $$$). Met the owner of the spot, Garbo, she was lovely and also is the maker of some rad jumpsuits. Coffee drinks were great. Ordered breakfast tacos, which took awhile to get, and actually were taken by someone else (I'm assuming by accident, because crime in Marfa is nil).
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
Very limited menu, but what we had was delicious. The coffee was excellent! Very clean and relaxed atmosphere. Outdoor seating available, and they are very dog friendly.
google avatar

Clare O.

Yelp
This is the cutest place EVER! We stopped here for a coffee and everything was great. We got a coffee, a (real) macchiato, a hibiscus tea and a croissant. The space is so adorable, I'm obsessed with the tables specifically, and they have an adorable little section of gifts/pottery/mortars and pestle you can buy. The tea and croissant were great and the staff was so sweet (and masked!). This is the gem of marfa and not only do they have tea/coffee/bakery but they have breakfast sandwiches/tacos/parfaits. 10/10 recommend.

Kahlee G.

Yelp
So disappointed that this place was such a bust! Had such high hopes especially after reading the reviews. They hardly had any items available on the menu. The limited food options we did order took well over 40 minutes to receive, which ended up being incorrect. Tried to discuss the issues with the server but that was a complete joke. Tried calling the "manager" Tyler numerous times but shocker have yet to hear back.
google avatar

Rik S.

Yelp
This was the first place we stopped at on our Marfa Trip and OMG was it AMAZING. I wasn't really hungry and didn't want breakfast just a coffee. That's until I seen a server walk by with some good and I was like wow that looks good. So we decided to sit down and eat breakfast. My breakfast was amazing so good. I was very pleased that they were able to make some Vegan Tacos for my GF which she absolutely LOVED. I love this weird little city and when I come back The Sentinel will definitely be our first stop again!
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place. Inside was super cute and cozy and they had outside seating next door. Plenty of parking and chill vibes. My son and I came for breakfast as I had read good reviews and wanted to try it out while we were here. My son ordered a chocolate croissant and a Mexican coke. He enjoyed his. I wanted a breakfast taco but they were sold out so I got the egg breakfast and a lavender latte. They asked if I wanted whole or oat milk and I was happy to hear they had oat milk so that's how I ordered it. They also asked if I wanted my latte hot or cold. I love the service related questions so you make sure to get exactly what you want. Service was really fast and very friendly. My breakfast plate was so delish. The eggs were a bit salty for my taste but everything else was cooked perfectly. The bread was really, really good. Tasted like it had rosemary in it. Went really well with the jam they served. There were two big tables in the front and two small tables with couches. They had small pillows to sit on the floor so you can be level with the table for a more comfortable seat while eating. The only thing that was blah was that there were several flies in the pastry cabinet.
google avatar

Judy Z.

Yelp
We stopped here based on the previous reviews that they accommodate vegans and were looking forward to tacos. I asked if they had anything vegan or that could be made vegan, I got a resounding 'No'. We were obviously disappointed and eventually the cashier said they could probably make a pancake. We just opted for lattes (which were fine) to go at that point. It's a cute place.

Yelp
Low key Texas Chill AF! A long road trip to Marfa deserves a stop to relax at The Sentinel! A local paper that sells wares and serves up some great beverages. There isn't much more to say beyond it's a required spot for visitors and locals alike!

Kelley K.

Yelp
Fun and relaxing spot to grab coffee in Marfa. Excellent coffee and pastries. We were not so impressed with the tacos.
