"Open Thursday through Sunday in the winter and through Monday come summer, this “casual mountain cookhouse” is a pleasant surprise along Highway 285. A previously Denver-based couple (he, a chef, she, a produce purveyor) run the cabin restaurant, serving pan-seared fish, spinach and kale salad, and short rib sandwiches. A lounge area offers beer, wine, and cocktails." - Josie Sexton, Eater Staff

Google
Great breakfast. Best, most attentive and friendly, staff ever. Cute inside and out. Very clean and well stocked. Meals, pastries, retail goods and more. You really should stop in and check it all out. Airstream snack shack outside main building too!

Erik Smith (Rky.Mtn.Warlord_)

Google
Quaint boutique mountain restaurant with an amazing staff and excellent breakfast. Get a window seat so you can enjoy the humming birds over the patio.

Noël Lyons

Google
This is one of the cleanest restaurants we've eaten at in a long time! Loved the friendly service and the scones are stellar. We ordered two Classic breakfasts and they were great. Looking forward to making this restaurant a regular stop on hwy 285 roadtrips!

Google
The food is good. The menu isn't very extensive, but it seems like a good place. The pork is delicious. The waiters are very friendly and helpful.

Google
I've been passing by the Shaggy Sheep in Grant, CO on HWY. 285, for some time thinking, I bet that's a great place to grab lunch. So, I finally went and was not disappointed in any way! The atmosphere has a true mountain vibe, with a fireplace and rustic feel. It's like a cabin in the dining room. The service was personal and very attentive, and the food was hot, fresh, and tasty. I'll be back, but I'll make sure to take a couple of made from scratch cookies to enjoy on my drive back to Denver! I highly recommend a visit!

Anita S. (AMSB)

Google
This was a very cute place to eat with really yummy food. The menu was simple but creative. The service was great. Reasonable pricing. I had the Carnitas tacos with green chili soup. Delicious. Will warn you the soup was spicy. If you are heading in or out of Denver on highway 285, try it out!

Steven Fremgen

Google
Don’t drive by and say, we should try that place. Stop in and enjoy from their scratch kitchen. Local, family-owned

Google
I would drive from Denver every weekend just for the B&G with two eggs. The service was extremely pleasant and fast. Plus, we sat by the window and watched hummingbirds the entire time. The wife's burrito looked great, but I was so focused on the dish sent from the heaven's that I didn't pay much attention. 10 stars if I could.

Yelp
What a gem! This fun, cozy diner is in an area with not a lot of food options. That said, they certainly don't rest on their laurels because of it. We came for an early lunch driving through. I had the Quinoa Salad with chicken. It was fresh, delicious and filled me up. My husband had the brisket tacos (they were on special), and he loved them as well. We both had a cocktail as well, and they did not disappoint. Service was fun and super friendly! Don't miss out on this local, gem!

Sarah J.

Yelp
Friendly spot with tasty, fresh food including baked goods. Great spot to spot off while heading to the mountains on 285...I have driven past it for years and wish I had stopped earlier. I had the chilaquiles appetizer and would recommend it including the homemade chips. Rustic mountain decor, good for families or couples.

Yelp
This place more than lives up to the hype! I'm staying about a mile down the road, so stopped in yesterday and went with the burger, which is one of the best I've ever had (and I'm a burger lover). Went back today, and while I wanted another burger I needed the salad. The calabacitas didn't disappoint! Everything was fresh and delicious. They've got a bar area to the right, cocktail menu, and several good beers on tap. To the left is the gift shop (local jams, t-shirts, mugs), and further down is the main dining area. They've even got some "bar" seating right by the windows overlooking 285. Staff couldn't be more friendly! You'll feel at home right when you walk in. Pull over! You won't regret it.

Yelp
Stopped at this place randomly driving from Denver to Buena Vista and glad we did. Super comfy little cafe and bar with great decor and awesome little gifts. We were immediately welcomed with the most friendly staff, they are simply wonderful! Good selection of draft beers, wine on tap, and terrific house made cocktails. I had the short rib sandwich that came with grilled onions and a jalapeño cream sauce on a brioche bun. It was tender and delicious. But the star of my meal was the hand cut French fries, so very delicious. Perfectly salted, crisp-tender, and golden brown. You'll love this little gem in the mountains!

Casey A.

Yelp
A little pricey, but a great local spot. Keep an eye on the hours. 11-8 means they only have lunch and dinner. I was a bit bummed I couldn't get brunch this visit, but that's my fault for not knowing. I'd come back. The potatoe wedges were cooked perfectly. And their hand pies and scones are delicious.

Yelp
If you're journeying along Highway 285 towards Fairplay, there's an absolute must-stop destination, the Shaggy Sheep Restaurant. Located in Grant, Colorado, this charming eatery is a haven for travelers seeking hearty comfort food that leaves a lasting impression. Beef Brisket Sandwich: The star of the show at Shaggy Sheep is undeniably their Beef Brisket Sandwich. Tender, flavorful, and generously portioned, it's a culinary masterpiece. The succulent brisket, perfectly cooked and piled high on a fresh bun and topped off with a great tasting coleslaw. Every bite is a burst of flavor, and it's easily one of the best beef brisket sandwiches I've ever had. Soups: In addition to the stellar brisket, Shaggy Sheep also excels in crafting delicious soups. The variety of soups offered is impressive, and they rotate their offerings regularly. The day I was there they were serving a pumpkin curry soup that was outstanding. Atmosphere: While Shaggy Sheep might not boast a luxurious interior, its welcoming, rustic charm aligns perfectly with its roadside location. The staff are friendly, and there's a sense of camaraderie among the travelers who stop by. The cozy atmosphere is just what you need to unwind during a long journey. Location: Located right on Highway 285, Shaggy Sheep is an ideal pit stop on your way to Fairplay or other mountain destinations. Overall Experience: Shaggy Sheep Restaurant is a hidden gem that deserves recognition for its exceptional Beef Brisket Sandwich and delectable soups. It's not just a place to grab a quick meal; it's an experience that adds a memorable chapter to your journey. If you find yourself on Highway 285, do yourself a favor and stop at the Shaggy Sheep--you won't be disappointed. This unassuming eatery is a testament to the fact that sometimes the best culinary delights are found off the beaten path. Visit their website https://www.the-shaggy-sheep.com/

Yelp
My husband picked up food to go so can't comment on interior but the food was surprisingly good for being a random spot in the mountains! The burger in particular was delicious, kids grilled cheese not so much. Service over the phone was friendly, can't speak for dine-in.

Tyler M.

Yelp
This place is SOOOo good I love the burgers they have specials and today I got the fish and chips. the service is amazing too. The food and menu is small but everything is amazing. Perfect place to seddle down. And get a bite to eat

Kelly M.

Yelp
Excellent stop on 285 between FairPlay and Conifer. Homemade food in an adorable local cabin setting. We had a burger and carnitas tacos. Both were excellent!! Also locally owned licks ice cream has a trailer next to restaurant!! Great road trip stop!!

Reena E.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! I tried the green chili and tacos, and my husband ordered the ruben sandwich - the special of the day. The tacos had a different seasoning, i enjoyed quite a bit, and then i took a bite off the ruben sandwich and made me want my own (but i stuck with my tacos). All in all, it was all very yummy! When close to this town, i would definitely return to have more of that chili! Oh and definitely have more of their apple pie! Thank

Candace M.

Yelp
While the food was good, this place is about the ambiance. We had a great lazy morning breakfast at the shaggy sheep. The baked avocado was both unusual and tasty. As a southerner, the jalapeño-cheddar biscuits and gravy was not my favorite..but worth a try for local flavor. The staff was delightful and the to go bakery items were delicious.

Erica F.

Yelp
Great food, great prices, wonderful staff, and a delightful experience all around. I loved it.

Timothy S.

Yelp
The food and service were very nice in a little mountain town, exactly what you were hoping for in a small local place.

William G.

Yelp
Up here we don't have a grand amount of selection. We're rural, we're sparse, we have neither the time nor the disposable cash to support a Denver's-worth of restaurants. So imagine the absolute Triple Word Score in finding the Shaggy Sheep! It's delicious, it's uncompromisingly down-home friendly, and best of all, it's right here in my backyard. Sarah and the entire crew are nearly as delicious at the Chipotle and Lime Chicken sandwich. The potato soup is proof positive that the Universe loves me and wants me to be happy. Breakfast usually consists of three parts Joy and two parts Butter, along with whatever Chris and his team pads that out with (try the jalapeño biscuits!) In the summer, the Airstream trailer out back is a welcome addition. Plop down in an Adirondack chair, sip your beer and listen to the sounds of your blood pressure dropping and the mountains calling. You're going to love it!

Alex S.

Yelp
Great home cooked meals. Service is great, food is even better. The restaurant is a low key rustic mountain bar. Reasonable prices and fantastic food, especially given the location and difficulty of getting reliable fresh foods out on 285. Make sure to grab a couple hand pies to go for the road!

Amanda P.

Yelp
This small restaurant was adorable. We just had an awful meal and came in for a drink after leaf peeping. We walked in at 2:30 and they close at 3:00pm but they encouraged us to eat something. We had the corn and it was delicious! The staff was amazing and for what little food we had it was great. All of the staff we encountered was top notch! We hope to come back for breakfast or dinner.

Chuq Y.

Yelp
Likely similar to how many people stumble on The Shaggy Sheep, we were heading back from skiing and I-70 was backed up. We pulled up yelp and discovered the Shaggy Sheep. The parking lot is pretty big and at grade, so you can go to one end if you need some speed to merge back onto 285. We had called to make a reservation (highly recommended due to COVID) and the staff was very thankful that we did. When we walked in, there were a bunch of hats and scarves for sale on the left that were super soft and presumably knit from Shaggy Sheep wool! Our waitress was Morgan (who has a super cool tattoo sleeve) and she was spectacular. She brought us water and took our drink orders and since we were ready to order our meals, she also took those! Our food came out quickly. I had ordered the short rib with beets and my wife got a burger with fries. I was very excited to try the short rib, and I was not disappointed. I merely needed a fork to cut through the rib. There was a nice crust on it and the flavor was good. The beets were just slightly undercooked or under-pickled. They were firmer than I was comfortable putting my fork into, but the flavor was great. I like when the taste and texture is closer to the original of my food. My wife's burger was also great. I thought it was cooked well and the toasted bun provided a nice little crunch on the inside. That was a nice surprise. This will definitely be a "recommend to friends" and "need to go back" for me whenever we're driving through that area of 285.

Tom H.

Yelp
Whatever you do, don't get anything at the trailer next door. Food is a joke. Yuck!!!!!!

Marion C.

Yelp
Love the breakfast! My husband had the avocado with green chili and eggs.. It was great! The atmosphere was charming.... The waitress was very kind too. Ordered two fry pies to go... They were tasty but need more filling

Miranda E.

Yelp
This place is the perfect place to stop when in the mountains! Always great, friendly service. Great burgers and fries, good breakfast (baked avocado, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes are all delicious). Sometimes there can be a wait, especially during the weekends, but it is 100% worth it. The only downside is that they close at 3p now, so you need to get there early.

Kristie S.

Yelp
Best food in all of Colorado! Chris is a master chef and the staff makes you feel like family.

Deborah N.

Yelp
Such a great place, perfect for a post-hike lunch and beer! Around the corner from Guanella Pass turn off. Extremely friendly staff. Had the black bean burger with fries, very yummy. And while you wait for your table you can have a beer and snacks outside from the Airstream.

Brandon E.

Yelp
By far the best burger I have ever had, the service was incredible and the prices were great considering the high quality homemade ingredients that they use for their recipes. I am from Duluth, MN and will definitely eat here again when I am in the area.

Ellen B.

Yelp
Great food. Really nice employees. Be sure to try the specials! Leave room for the desserts, or take one to go. Highly recommend.

Dave R.

Yelp
Great pit stop on the way up to or back from the hills. Menu on the brief side of things, but Great Burger and hand cut Fries and fountain drinks. Looked like a great beer selection, also.

Annie B.

Yelp
Food is Fabulous! Driving 285 due to I-70 construction congestion. What a great surprise stop. Stopped on a Sunday and selected the Baked Avocado with green chili. Delicious! Husband asked why I wasn't sharing Haha!

Josip L.

Yelp
Excellent brunch. Feels like a popular family restaurant. Busy but service at the counter was friendly and quick.

Jeff T.

Yelp
Terrific setting, service and oh the mini pies!! We watched as most everyone even took some home.

Pam V.

Yelp
Always excellent food and friendly service. And the best scones you will ever eat! I highly recommend the peach!

Alexis G.

Yelp
Such a cozy cute restaurant, really enjoyed everything about this place. Service was great, food was great. Totally worth the stop!!

Carol C.

Yelp
Such a a fun place to stop and have a bite to eat. Dog friendly if you sit outside. Delicious sandwich pastries. A must stop!

Ciera N.

Yelp
The shaggy sheep is a great roadside restaurant along 285. Everything is delicious and made in house. The jam and the green chili is phenomenal. The owners CHRIS AND SARAH are pretty awesome and the staff has been great!!! The bartender/server VANESSA is fantastic and the little white haired lady CORINNE is soo sweet but spicy!!! Definitely will be back!!! If you happen to be close by stop by for a beer or food and even ice cream. It's all homemade!!!

Brian B.

Yelp
Consistently great service and food. Had the Beetroot salad & my wife had the black bean burger. Both were outstanding!! :-D

Mike s.

Yelp
We happened upon The Shaggy Sheep by missing our turnoff. Some things happen for a reason! Super nice staff. Great food. There might be a wait but grab a drink and hangout on their front porch. Don't pass it by!

Florence V.

Yelp
I was in the area with some friends and saw this cute restaurant off of 285 so we decided to stop for lunch. Upon entering, we were greeted warmly, seated immediately, and were asked what we would like to drink. When our server came back with our drinks, she took our orders. My friends ordered sandwiches and salads and I ordered the carnitas tacos with upgraded carnitas french fries smothered in green chile. Our food came out quickly and tasted so delicious. About midway through my lunch, I decided to get an arnold palmer because their lemonade looked so good. When we asked for separate checks, our server didn't bat an eye, which is great because some places frown upon separate checks. And although the register was at the front, our server was proactive and took our credit cards without us asking. The food is wonderful and the service was even more amazing. If you're in the area, you need to stop by!

Renee W.

Yelp
My husband and I were coming back from the long weekend in Salida and were early enough to stop for breakfast on the way back to Denver. All the ladies are so friendly, and NICE. We were sat at the 285 "bar" and had two seats on the end which was great. Prompt with coffee and water, my husband ordered the biscuits and gravy and I ordered the Classic = 2 eggs, potatoes, bacon and biscuits. The biscuits are fresh made daily and are jalepeno cheddar with homemade jam on the side. Ok when I say that the biscuits melt in your mouth, they do. Paired with butter and jam and its a PARTY. I think we'll drive there for breakfast one day as a day trip just for the biscuits and the service.

Sherrie K.

Yelp
Such a cute place!!! Food was awesome! Service was fantastic! We will be back next time we are driving thru

Tony R.

Yelp
Best meal of the extended weekend trip. Great menu selection. Lots of locals eating here which is always a good sign. Cool vibe and a great staff. If I ever return to CO, I will make the trip back for another great burger.

Bob B.

Yelp
Really great place to stop for a bite. Food is super tasty, made in house. Love all the humming bird feeders, so relaxing to listen to them buzz about and watch them on the feeders. Will definitely be a regular stop for us on our adventures.

Sarah Q.

Yelp
Two words: hand. pies. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! We went here on our way to Guanella Pass, & must've hit it at the perfect time as we had NO WAIT at 9:30 on a Saturday morning, despite the parking lot being completely full. It's a very cute, cabin-esque building that feels homey & mountain town charming. The breakfast menu was small, but ample enough to feed two vegetarians & a meat eating father. I like that they offer avocado instead of breakfast meat for the vegetarians, a nice taste you don't often see. I ordered their french toast, my mom ordered their classic breakfast with avocado, & my dad ordered the breakfast burrito with bacon. All of us were pleased with our meal, but I haven't even gotten to the best part yet. Their peach hand pie was to die for - omg. The crust was just the perfect flakiness & there was ample filling. I'm drooling just thinking about it and wish I ordered more. 4 stars as the service was just okay, nothing special, & the fact that this place is a bit on the pricy side, but definitely worth it for the mountain charm & delicious food. I will definitely be back here!

Jon C.

Yelp
We have ate here a couple of times. Food is really good and the chicken wings were huge. My only complaint is I wish they were open more.

Keith P.

Yelp
Everything you could ask for in a mountain lodge-style restaurant. The interior is beautifully decorated and gives off a cozy vibe. The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. There is even a patio with outdoor seating and a food truck to order from if you don't have time for dine-in service. I would highly recommend stopping by - there aren't many other restaurants that can compete with The Shaggy Sheep in this area.

Andrea K.

Yelp
This is THE place to stop if you're finding yourself driving up down 285. It's got it all. Awesome name, fun merchandise, and delicious food! We've stopped here a few times and have never been disappointed. On our way camping, we stopped for lunch. I had the pork tacos which were super yummy. My little had chicken nuggets which I must say, were quite tasty too. Hubs had the chicken sandwich which he deemed to be good. I had some of his fries because I opted for the green chile as my side and I was not disappointed. It has a nice kick. For breakfast on our way home, I had the baked avocado which is really good. I think I had that the last time we breakfasted here. Hubs opted for the biscuits and gravy and he seemed pleased! My little had the pancake and well, she finished every bite! They're spacing table during COVID, the staff wears masks, and they have outdoor seating as well. I watched them wipe down the tables thoroughly after people left. You can dine in ease. Also, free wifi which is great because there is no reception up here!

Janine B.

Yelp
Shaggy Sheep gets better with every seasonal menu change. Just when you think it can't get better they "wow" you again. I've had this short rib every Saturday for the past four weeks accompanied by the cumin roasted carrots tonight, roasted butternut squash last week and the crispy sprouts before that; all winners in my book. Their detailed attention to COVID 19 protocol is why they are the only place we "dine in" these days. So lucky to have this gem in our sparsely served county.

Kho I.

Yelp
This place was a pleasant surprise. Everything is made in house and was tasty. We ordered the green Chile soup - tasty but a barn burner, will see if it burns on the way out. The brisket sandwich and fries were excellent. Especially the fries, I would recommend getting a separate order. Lastly, the carnitas tacos were awesome. Dare I say, up there with my favorite carnita place El Tiempo in Houston.

Sara W.

Yelp
I had the best pork taco of my life here. my guy said his burger was superb. friendly folk, covid safe. i would go out of my way to visit here again!

Angi S.

Yelp
What a lovely surprise this restaurant was! We made a impromptu stop on Wednesday night and it was so much more than we expected from a roadside restaurant in the mountains. I wish I had taken better note of our server's name, because she was great--friendly, professional and very efficient. We both enjoyed our meals--crab cakes and a burger--and the potato wedges were possibly the best I've ever had. Great atmosphere too.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
When I went on vacation to the Colorado mountains, I never imagined I would be able to get such good food far away from any cities. The seared pork tenderloin and mushroom risotto were such high quality and full of flavor, something that I was struggling to find in neighboring towns. Best food I had on my trip here and would recommend to anybody driving though the mountains.

Seth B.

Yelp
Amazing food and a great staff. The quality is top notch and the atmosphere cozy. 10/10 would recommend.

Laura G.

Yelp
What a cute little place off the highway. Nice place for lunch, we had a hatch Chili soup - it was very good and we split a burger. Paired with a cold beer and it was a perfect lunch. You can tell that this place is beloved by locals and enjoyed by those passing by.
