First, while I'll say I'm sure this place isn't for everyone, I have to add I didn't think it would be much for me, either, and I went here to entertain my wife (who loves both everything Hawaiian, and kitsch). But there is something to be said about a 'bad joke' that is just committed to so hard and with such love, that it becomes a good joke after all. I've been to Trader Vic's and many other such places in the past and had a so-so time, but when the entire bar begins to flash while a chant of 'Volcano Bowl!' starts up, and the large tiki at the entrance unleashes smoke at the delivery of the aforementioned bowl drink (and there's a different one for the Mystery Bowl, and I would guess a third for the other bowl, which didn't get delivered while were were there), that even a stoic non-drinker found it charmingly hilarious.
But the most surprising thing was the Polynesian dancers--that come out on Wednesday nights and we arranged to be there for--were actually so affecting. I didn't expect an impassioned dance to a version of Stand By Me, partially sung in Hawaiian, which hit hard after losing one of my closest friends earlier in the month who would have loved the place. That alone would have made it worth the effort to find the place.
So I would definitely say this was one of the highlights of our trip to Vancouver. And even if you're a local who's somehow never been, I'd highly recommend it. They are lovely people in every way.
