Japanese Hotels That Defy Their Reputation

"At The Share Hotels Kumu Kanazawa, unapologetically contemporary post-industrial design, bare concrete and all, meets Japanese hospitality tradition; we’ve never seen tatami rooms look quite so modern. The Western rooms are impressive as well, and the bathrooms are a futuristic, minimalist vision. All of the interior spaces are stylish, clean-lined yet organic, impressive but not imposing — design-forward, but above all else, a welcoming space." - Mark Fedeli

This hotel is everything a hotel should be, and more. I stayed for a week and loved it from beginning to end.|Firstly very friendly, helpful and professional staff. Thank you!|Secondly great design and an excellent vibe/feel.|Thirdly great amenities - bicycles for hire, onsight laundry, great spaces on the 3rd and 5th floors to hang out and a delightful breakfast area/coffee-tearoom.|Fourthly the rooms are spacious and offer everything you need. Maybe the only complaint is the lack of daylight, but it didn't trouble me.|Fifth and lastly, an excellent location.|I will definitely return. Thank you Kumu - domo arigatogozaimasu!

Very interesting building with modern interieur. The rooms are Japanese style with a tea table. Staff is friendly and helpful. We could habe something printed out and also change our breakfast meal. Breakfast consists of an assigned meal and some addional buffet items like croissants, cake, soup etc. The hotel is next to a Bus Station so you can hop on the loop bus. It's 14 min from Kanazawa Station.

As other reviewers have noted, this hotel is totally not worth the price it charges. We paid ¥29,000 per night and the internet didn't even work. Feels like it should've been ¥15,000 at most. You'd get way better value at the Mitsui Garden Hotel across the street. Room was pleasant, clean, neat, basic (think MUJI aesthetic), and reasonably sized. Beds were hard as rocks (think salaryman-style train station hotel hard.) Most importantly... no internet. And when the internet happens to work, it runs at a sad 1.63Mbps. Slower than my phone data plan, impossible to do any work with. Reception staff were friendly, lovely people. Lobby cafe was good. I love giving establishments a chance to make things right. Will update my review if my complaints get resolved satisfactorily.

Absolute amazing experience, like always with THE SHARE HOTELS. Loved my stay in Kanazawa, and sleeping here just made it so relaxing. The hotel is full of art. The amenities are super high quality, and actually, some of them have insane design ( that laundry room? WOW ) . The room was so good, with a little tea drinking area. The toilet + bath allowed me to relax and unwind after a day of walking. But the showstopper of this specific hotel has to be that cafe in the lobby. OMG. You just have to see it. That wood substructure that flows along the whole ground floor looks like something that Kengo Kuma would have done. It's just amazing. 10/10

Interesting ‘industrial-chic’ hotel. We had a bunk-bed interior room with no windows. Rather small. Given the above, it seemed rather over-priced compared to other places we stayed in Japan. The staff was very helpful. Breakfast was delicious. The location was reasonably convenient for sightseeing.

From the Kanazawa station, there are several buses to take to this hotel, including a loop service (200 yen per trip). You can also take the JR buses. Ride is about 5 mins away, and the bus stops are right in front of the hotel. (30 seconds walk). If you dont intend to drive, stay near hotels with bus stops. Get a day pass for 600 yen and you can take unlimited rides with the left loop and right loop buses, that bring you to all the tourist attractions. Board at the back and alight in front of the bus.||We got a superior room and it is fantastic to say the least. Fits 4 adults with 2 thick mattresses and 2 tatami mattress. Room is nicely decorated with fully automated toilet with the lid opening and closing by itself. Bath room is perfect with an area and stool for Jap bath (onsen like setup). There are 2 floors at level 3 and 5 where you can chill and make green tea and other drinks. ||For our room, a complete tea set with a nice kettle and teapots and cups provide the experience of making your own tea with nice tea bags. ||Breakfast is around 2,100 yen per pax, and must be booked before 11 pm the day before. |There is no staff on shift from 12 am to 6 am, but an emergency no. is provided if you need urgent help.||Overall, a superb stay. (oh, if you want bicycles, you can rent from the hotel as well).|There is also a cafe at level 1.

Party of three adults stayed for 1 night in June. Nice Japanese design hotel is located within walking distance from Japan Rail station (15-minute walk). The neighborhood offers plenty of restaurant alternatives. Room was very nice and offered enough space for 3 adults with backpacks. The common areas are outstanding (On floor small kitchen, roof top terrace and laundry).

Great hotel to visit Kanazawa. It is located quite near the shopping area and 5 minutes from the castle. You can walk down the road towards the Samurai district and you will have many restaurant options. The hotel itself is quite new and interiors are very modern, refined and spotless clean. We had a 4-people room with tatamis, which was good but you get a bit claustrophobic since there is hardly any window. We end up spending some time at the communal tea place quite a bit. The Wifi was very erratic though. We don't recommend the breakfast unless you are looking for a Japanese option. Service was excellent as usual in Japan.
