15 of New Orleans’ Best Bloody Marys | Eater New Orleans

"Who needs lunch when you can order a Shimmy Shack bloody mary? Pepperoni, cheese cubes, pickled okra, bacon, olives - it’s all in the towering mix, even a little plastic baby that’s gone AWOL from a king cake. Good local spot on the West Bank, this bank-turned-bar and restaurant has a solid menu and friendly regulars. Come hungry." - Beth D’Addono

I ordered the blacked catfish & had the outstanding Bloody Mary while I waited. I must say, The chef knocked it out of the park!! After a short time my meal arrived so visually pleasing i almost didnt want to eat it, however, with the aroma of perfectly cooked catfish, fresh crisp vegetables, & a perfect portioned bed of rice... I couldn't resist! The service was comparable to being served by your mother after a long time away; friendly, nice small talk with pleasant get to know you as a person attitude. This establishment has a cozy indoor with several tables as well as many seats at the bar. One step out the side doors you'll find a quaint tree shaded patio with several tables to enjoy the outside breeze & people watch. I highly recommend for any 1st timers to visit at least once. As a 20 year old establishment, I would like to see more patrons to frequent & call this their "home". Let's bring this place some booming business to ensure it's enduring life in this part of town.

Excellent all around! Chill, laid back bite to eat under the good feel 80s tunes. Kayla was an outstanding server. Very attentive and pleasant. The food was delish. Cheese curds, fried mushrooms were nice sized portions and very tasty. The Reuben might have to be the best I've ever had. Patty was healthy and the marble rye perfectly toasted. I ordered it med well and it was more like medium, so bare that in mind. I didn't mind. The Chicken Ranch sandwich is ridiculously large and the breading reminded us of a good old Chicago area pork tenderloin sandwich that you just cannot find here. (Just a thought, wink wink) The fries are what I consider heavily seasoned and salty, but very good if that is your liking. Modelo on tap! What?! You hardly ever see that around here. So refreshing with a lime! Don't hesitate to try this place. I will say overall the sandwiches were a little greasy. We will be back though!

Google
I will definitely be paying this place a vist everytime I'm in Nola. The food was sooo flavorful. The staff is amazing, Lacey was our server and she definitely makes sure your taken care if. Everywhere you look there is something to catch your eye!

Google
We loved that the bartender and staffed talked with us and joked around with us. Other diners talked with us as well. The food was excellent. If we ever come back to New Orleans this is a must stop for us. The food was very good and I even enjoyed the alligator bites.

Google
Wanted somewhere with outside dining. The food was great, server Bruce was extremely helpful for a 1st timer. Onion rings are amazing and the sauce can be put on everything. Catfish Appetizer is more than enough and order fries for a dollar more. The fish was hot and fried to perfection. Not to hard and Definitely not soggy. Highly suggest and bet it's even better at night with the outside bar. Definitely will be back.

Google
The atmosphere was super laid back. We had a super cute waitress that was really chill and told us about how it was a bank at one time and the vault etc. food was great and really reasonable on pricing! Definitely must check it out if your in New Orleans

Google
The food was delicious and the decor was entertaining. Our wait staff was attentive and helpful, and the bloody mary was exceptional. We ordered the debris cheese curds, the crispy oysters with brie, all were large portions, fresh and delicious! Highly recommend!

Google
The shimmy shack is a great place to get quick bite to eat. I was greeted by their friendly wait staff. I ordered the Hot Shimmy burger. The patty is a beef and hot sausage blend. It was so good!

Yelp
Very casual restaurant and bar in Harahan. Just like its name states, it's a shack with a wide variety of decorations on the walls like old me used to from New Orleans restaurants. Started off with cheese curds and fried pickles which were so delicious. For entrees we had a roast beef poboy which was one of the best I've had, one of the specialty burgers, debris fries and a grilled shrimp platter. Everyone said that theirs was great. The serving sizes are pretty big which is nice. I treated myself to a strawberry margarita which was the bomb! We will definitely be back as their menu Is huge with lots of things we want to try.

Yelp
Primarily a bar, but serves large portions at reasonable prices in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Solo lunch eaten at the bar. Decided to indulge my "Reuben Snob" with fries. Was not disappointed! Had plenty of leftovers to share with my husband that evening, whom I'm sure will be wanting to visit himself in person in the near future. Quick service, drink kept full, quick check out. Check, check, chek!

Yelp
We enjoyed a nice of evening patio dining here tonight. We seated ourselves and a waiter quickly came over to greet us and take our drink orders. I had the blackened shrimp tacos topped with green fried tomatoes and my hubby had the Buffalo chicken salad. Both meals were fillings and delicious!

Yelp
The service here is really the key. I've been going here for eons and the servers have always been amazing. The food is great too, don't get me wrong, but the servers are amazing. Kendra was amazing. All the servers I've known there have been amazing but Kendra was extra sweet and cool.

Yelp
Truly enjoyed my experience here. Came here with the wife and kid to have some bar food with a family touch. The inside was like we both wanted, could be a dive bar, but also a family friendly establishment that you can bring your kids to in the daytime. Food was perfect and exactly what we wanted. I grabbed the Philly flat and was super happy with it. Add in the shimmy sauce with my fries and you got a great place to eat. It's a great spot, give it a try!

Yelp
We come here all the time and always have a good time. Great selection of food and drinks. I always get the spicy honey garlic pork sliders (they aren't spicy, even a little lol) but they're delicious. I've have the southwest panini which is good too. The onion rings, fried pickles and debris fries are great apps. Waiters are always attentive and quick. Food is cooked to order but comes out in about 15 minutes. A little on the pricey side but well worth it. You can sit inside or outside, both are nice areas to be. We usually eat outside on the patio.

Yelp
Kendra, our server was great. We were seated immediately. Meal was served timely. Food was pretty good.

Yelp
This place has the funniest sayings/jokes out front! Cool lil spot with an outdoor bar with a tv. We stopped in to order food to go. I like the ecclectic decor. We had a beer while we waited...staff was friendly and answered questions we had about the menu. Anyone who knows me knows that im a huge fan of the oyster so i chose the fried oyster ceasar salad. My guy got the white beans and pork chop. My salad was pretty good..could have used a few more oysters. The white beans were good as well. Pork chop wasnt like a typical pan fried one..it was encrusted with i thk panko breadcrumbs. I enjoyed the crunch and flavor of it. Definitely want to dine in next time bc they have a lot of tasty sounding items on their menu. They have a small parking lot and prices were reasonable.

Yelp
Shimmy Shack is a fun place to go. I miss the sign man though. Outside the restaurant there is a big billboard sized sign out front located in their parking lot, the sign would change weekly? maybe daily... anyway, whoever was in charge of the sign would come up with some fun phrases or joked or advice for the day or the week. It just used to make me smile and I so miss it. Just a suggestion to bring the sign back. So on to the restaurant, this place is ok. I never had an amazing meal here, the food is decent. But the ambience has always been fun, you can dine outside and there are TV's to watch sports, the wait staff is always friendly and, the drinks are good. In fact if there is one drink you should order, it should be the bloody mary which is not on the menu oddly enough. It is located on the napkin or the table menu I think? Anyway, the drink had some good flavor to it, it could have been a little spicier but overall very smooth, not too thick and there is a meal inside your glass - which I loved! I recommend coming here for sports games and for drinks, very fun casual place.

Yelp
I recently had food from here because one of my coworkers was going to pick it up. As I was reading the reviews I was really side eyeing this establishment and reconsidering if I even wanted to give them my money. There's tons of racist reviews. However, the girl who was getting the food said she hadn't experienced any of these things when she went so I obliged. I ordered the half beef/half hot sausage burger and it was amazing! I couldn't finish it all because it's huge but I sure gave it my best effort. Tip: take 10 tums before you try to tackle this bad boy

Yelp
GET THE FISH TACOS WITH LOTS OF SIDE AVOCADO SAUCE Shimmy Shack has an unimpressive general menu. The atmosphere is a bit oppressive and service a bit too indifferently hostile. But no place is perfect. However if you stick to my script you will have a great experience: GET THE FISH TACOS WITH LOTS OF SIDE AVOCADO SAUCE Fish tacos are pretty much a no fail, but here they are the specialty and well executed. But what's unique is the avocado sauce. (See pic) It's last meal worthy. My suggestion, order them as the chef suggests, then get a side of extra sauce...maybe two. A good pairing with a double house margarita.

Yelp
Great place to stop for bar food and a drink. I had the sliders (burgers) and a old fashion. Simple but nice.

Evan S.

Yelp
Great service, not the best portions.. I paid 15 bucks for a shrimp po-boy with (I counted) 7 shrimp on it. Usually when I get a po-boy, shrimp are pouring out from the sides. (Ya know - southern portions. We love to eat.) The flavor was still really good I'm just disappointed with the portion. I understand that the shrimp and oysters on the menu are set at market price but I mean.. French bread cost a dollar. There's no way I would pay $2 per shrimp again. Other than that the atmosphere was as shown on their site, it had a small community feel to it. It was very comfortable. I'd possibly visit again to try something different.

Yelp
At first your thinking it's a bar when you drive past but it's way more than that when you go in. It's small on the inside but they also have seating outside. It was hot inside but I don't know if it was because it was like 100 degrees outside or their AC wasn't working to it's full potential. The servers were professional and always on the go. Now the food, . The debris cheese curds were off the chain. The pieces of roast beef, sinful tasting gravy and perfectly fried cheese curds. I want to drive to tickfaw and slap my momma it was so good. You get a lot for the price so don't let that scare you. It was WORTH it. Trust this fat girl. I'm still dreaming about it. The Jimmys chicken ranch was a huge piece of breast. The only thing I can say is that it could've used some seasoning to make it pop but I saved half for later and it tasted even better. Maybe it needed to cool off but I also dipped some of it in that gravy and . BAM. Fries do not come with it but it's like $2 extra. I wouldn't even get the fries just get those debris curds. I will definitely get food from here again and shout it to the Mountains for other people to come eat here.

Yelp
Food was great!!! Service was friendly and attentive. We sat outside and it was such a pretty day and enjoyable.

Yelp
Ate lunch there today with friends and got one of the specials (blackened catfish on cheese grit covered in barbecue shrimp). It was fantastic. The catfish was cooked to perfection and the barbecue shrimp on top mixed well with the grits. I felt the fish was flavored well and mixed with the grits and shrimp made a fantastic meal. All in all I'd recommend lunching there.
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
Went there for lunch and it was a joke. Hard to find a parking spot (which I thought was a good sign!), understaffed, waited 30-45 minutes to place an order and then another 30 minutes to get our food. My shrimp po boy was mediocre. Coke was flat. Lunch for 3 was $52. C'mon! I can't recommend this place. We will never be back. I expect prompt service and good food if you're charging inflated prices!
google avatar

Mitchell J.

Yelp
The food was good however the service was bad. It took us 25 mins to order and then they got my order wrong. I got chips instead of sweet potato fries. Then it took another 20 minutes to get our check.
google avatar

Gary H.

Yelp
The Brunch was fantastic / got the eggs Benedict with grits & OJ / can't wrong. Plus a Spanish omelette/ can't wrong with either Highly recommended

Katie E.

Yelp
Table for 2. Food took an hour but was freshly cooked when it came out. Onion rings were delicious! The catfish "platter" for $12.95 was disappointing. It only includes 1 piece of fish.
google avatar

Dalynn B.

Yelp
This place was great!! It was our first time here and we will definitely be back!! The service was really impressive considering some of the reviews said other wise! We shared a special appetizer on the board and each got a special entree. The food was amazing!! Can't wait to be back
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
This place is hit or miss on service but the food is always good IMO. The shittiest waitress I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with was at this place (I'm talking about attitude for asking for another beer refill). I actually asked to be reimbursed for my courtesy tip of 20%, but didn't follow through after management started the process on my credit card. I just wanted to make a point. The next time I gave it a try the waitress was wonderful. I've been here six or seven times. Shite waitress 50% of the time. Roll the dice folks

Yelp
First time visiting this place. Loved it. The honey bbq sliders and the spicy shimmy....DELISH!! The Long Island ... loved it and the Bloody Mary was awesome. I will definitely be back!!

Claire C.

Yelp
Delicious! Been many times and they always have the best specials (kudos to whoever comes up with them)! My fav was the étouffée from a few days ago, im still thinking about it!
google avatar

Yelp
As I walked in I knew the owner was a redsox fan. I was wearing my Yankees cap, so the owner had to show the Yankees handicap spot he has in front of the establishment lol. Besides his bad taste in baseball, he had a very cool place. I'd definitely come here to watch a ballgame, and I love the outside seating. I had the angel hair pasta chicken parm which I enjoyed.
google avatar

Kris C.

Yelp
A very unique place to have a meal. The menu is big and offer both meat and seafood options. They have daily specials that are written on the wall. There is normally a daily taxo special and you can't go wrong with that. Also the grilled catfish and blacked catfish is awesome. The service is always great and with friendly waitresses that are willing to take care of you. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Lynn W.

Yelp
I came here with my old manager for lunch. It was very dark hole in the wall. I must say you s at yourself quickly. The hostess jumped right after our table. Food was out in less than 10 minutes. The turkey burger was very good. I will be back.
google avatar

Mary F.

Yelp
Owner extremely rude when we picked up food. Probably last time we will go. If you don't appreciate my business I have plenty of other places to go to.

Yelp
Have to admit, I came here "looking" for these racist banners that are meant to divide us. I don't know if this is some sort of practical joke, but I think someone created a fake Yelp account and posted this horrible stuff. I mean look, when the post office lost my "package" I HAD to admit to the postmaster that I mailed my "employer" a GUN. A federal investigation traced it to broken arrow, ok., but the guy is afraid to pick it up!!!! Lol . So frankly I am deeply offended that yelp would remove my positive review of Mosca's for "lack of personal experience". And if I have another person ask "where I'm from"-I am going to hurt them. It's not like I'm a BJJ Brown belt that was denied black because of some Iraqi kid (true) - I am a nobody. I am much worse than Rambo. I am a federal academy DROPOUT. So I know what it takes and the secrets to training others. But am the 1st loser. I never started the yelp bathroom pics, someone else did. All I did find is that they had an awesome pastrami and a great salad, nice beers, a beautiful patio. The owner said that he might install a FREE CAR WASH if enough of the apartment clientele. He said the key to life is to go to work enjoy what you have, and go home. Some of the best advice I've been given aside from my LSU dental school graduate. "Go get your vision checked!!!" I'm going to schedule that LASIK with the 20% radio app discount..... love it

Yelp
Husband and I have lived in the area for two years and never tried this place. Stopped here for burgers tonight and we were pretty disappointed. The size of the burger was great - 8oz of meat. However, meat had zero flavor and was basically just a big chunk of grilled meat with a small amount of toppings (one tomato, one slice of onion, two pickles). We also ordered some fried pickles to start, they were actually decent. Service was awful. Waiter told us he was busy and behind multiple times. We never got our water refilled, had to request extra napkins etc. After we asked for some ranch for our pickles and waited for a while, my husband ran inside to grab it and was told to "Be patient!". When the table next for us asked for a menu after sitting for about fifteen minutes, the waiter told them to "Hold up!". I get that it's a pretty casual place, I'd hardly expect five star service but a friendly attitude would have been nice. The other wait staff we did observe seemed accommodating. Bland food, bad service. We won't bother going back.

Yelp
Not sure why so many negative reviews here!!!! I've been going to the Shimmy Shack for over 6 years now and am always 1000% pleased. Food is delicious, well priced, and staff is super fun and friendly. Great place for game days, hungover brunch, and Cuban sandwiches!
google avatar

Terrence M.

Yelp
Probably not going back to this place. Food was ok the two time I've gone. I've notice the Obama hatred displayed in this restaurant and can't find myself to give them my money again. Instead of going nurtural with politics they have to show hate, witch is fine it's your business display what u want. I just choose to go else where for now on.
google avatar

Kodi W.

Yelp
Such a sweet surprise to find the gem!! The food was truly spectacular for "bar food" expectations. Cool bar chairs
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
I was surprised to see The Shimmy Shack at 2.5 stars. River Ridge/Elmwood can be a little sleepy and this place adds some fun and flavor. You can actually go grab some food after 9pm. Because sometimes you just need a late night burger. I had a burger with a side of awesomeness. It was a hot sausage and angus beef mix. Topped with BACON, corn beef, fried egg, cheese and dressed. The folks were "bar" friendly and love regulars. The space has some fun and creative stools. Don't let the low stars full you. Go grab a burger from the Shimmy Shack sometime.
google avatar

Jan M.

Yelp
The food was average, but the atmosphere was uncomfortable. As a result, I do not recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Lara P.

Yelp
Breaking all kind of food rules really pays off for Shimmy Shack. French onion soup with andouille sausage, raspberry pulled pork sliders with pepper jack cheese, black forest cake with raspberry mint sauce. Crazy good stuff!!! My husband loved the ribs so much he almost bought a second order to take home for tomorrow. Oooh and the muffuletta is on flatbread. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Chance S.

Yelp
I ate here the other day after living next to it for about a year. I read the reviews and was leery to say the least. All I can say is, the place was great. Service was great. I don't care about political views. I find it mind dumbing that people give this place 1 star because they have anti Obama stickers on the wall. As far as the racist situation goes, I saw a 2 different black men go to the bar and they were regulars. The had a good reception and weren't treated bad at all. I find that people see a sticker on the wall and just assume racism. That is great though. I don't want to eat around those kinds of people anyway.
google avatar

Dariela W.

Yelp
I can't believe this was my first time in this restaurant. I absolutely love their outdoor sitting area! The food was great too. We had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and at first I was skeptical because I don't like marinara sauce but MY OH MY! Their marinara sauce is to die for. For entrees we had the blueberry pulled pork sliders and the Jimmy's chicken ranch sandwich. The pork sliders came with onion rings and you can tell they are made from scratch because they were just perfect. The sliders had a very unique/interesting flavor, I never thought that blueberry and pork would be so great together. The sandwich WOW WOW WOW! Mouthwatering! Just perfection! A bit difficult to eat because they don't skimp on the chicken but I didn't mind taking some leftovers for dinner later! I can say that this was the best chicken sandwich that I've ever had. The service and employees were ok. They were really busy but they were always very attentive. We will definitely go back to this restaurant because of their food and environment.

Yelp
The Shimmy Shack is basically a comfortable dive like neighborhood restaurant. Before I actually ever ate here, I knew it as the place with the funny puns on their signs. Some have gotten all butt hurt by some of their sayings in this overly sensitive politically correct robotic society that we are currently in. I'm sure that statement offended somebody as well. Boo freaking hoo. Anywho, we came here after a Zephyrs game and started off with a few drinks and some Fried oysters, spinach, and brie on a baked pita. Holy smokes this was good! This dish could have been served at Restaurant August it was so good. The only exception to this dish being served at a fancier establishment is that the portion size was large. After a few beer and the app, I got overly ambitious and ordered a burger. Not just any burger but this huge monstrosity of a burger. I got what was called the Blarney Stone Burger. It included 1 large patty which was 1/2 ground beef, 1/2 hot sausage, corned beef hash, pepper jack cheese, bacon, and a fried egg. I'm damn near 40....this is a burger for a 20 year old. I needed a bottom of Nexium, some Maalox and a difibulator by the time I was done. The burger was tasty but the hot sausage overpowered the whole thing. I think a little less sausage and more beef would have balanced out the flavors more. The burger comes with fries but those are crinkle cut frozen crap. Blah. Come for the burgers and that oyster app, totally worth it just get a different side. Shimmy Shack is a fun place with some hidden gems on the menu.
google avatar

Bob B.

Yelp
Lunch here at least once a week. Nice laid back atmosphere and a menu diverse enough to satisfy anyone. Formerly under the same ownership as Rivershack, many of the core menu items are similar. This is the Rivershack, but more open, colorful and light. The owner, Jimmy, is an experienced New Orleans restaurateur with a great sense of humor. Like this place mostly for the drinks but the menu offers quite a few gems (spinach salad, paninis, and whatever the special of the day is)

K J.

Yelp
The first visit the food was amazing the second and third was just for the onion rings that are flour batter and hand breaded. They are good. The fried pickles are good too.

Catheryn N.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. The phone was beyond what I expected. I got a special for the day, roast pork and crispy grits! The Bloody Mary and Moscow mule were right one point with a late Saturday brunch.
google avatar

Thomas C.

Yelp
Were Simi regulars at The Shimmy shack. We just had the Chrispy Oysters & Brie, I'm usually not a fan of brie but the combo of flavors is amazing. I couldn't take the picture fast enough before half of it was gone. I do not know who decided to make this and put it on the menu but I thank you, It was quite tasty!!!
google avatar

Jill Z.

Yelp
We love the Shimmy Shack. Don't let its' bar themed exterior fool you. The only bloody marry that comes with a flossing tool. Large menu and kid/family friendly.
google avatar

Prakash A.

Yelp
Do not drink beer at this establishment. I thought getting a expired beer was a one off situation, but since my family frequents this place I had to return and it happened again. After nicely asking the bartender for another beer he became infuriated and stated I'm not putting my hand back in to the cooler just to pull out another same beer you think is expired.... apparently Im not the only one because another reviewer had the exact same experience/situation. If the food was great I would overlook the incompetent staff, but it isn't. Save your money and appetite and don't eat here.
google avatar

Dosh W.

Yelp
Honestly we don't normally eat here. Drinks only. We can bring our dog on the patio. They give her bacon she loves it! However, this Friday night we ate, catfish, shrimp & grits and a infused burger. It was good, like actually good! The owner can be a bit over the top.
google avatar

Donna U.

Yelp
Grilled Ahi Tuna was very good! The Cosmo was on point. Service was good & atmosphere was casual...
google avatar

Bre W.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend came here for a late lunch. We got alligator sausage, a Cuban flat and a Cuban burger. Both super duper good, and don't get even get me started on how tasty the fries were!!! But our server had ZERO personality and it felt like he didn't want to be bothered :(, but he WAS NOT rude tho. I'll definitely go again!

Tony B.

Yelp
If you want to know the truth about the 2.5 stars in the reviews, here it is. The owner has political banter on the walls such as a sign that says Obama Bin Lyin. He also puts jokes on the sign by the rode regularly. He once put a joke about Bruce Jenner on Father's Day and liberals got their panties in a bunch and teamed up writing 1 star reviews. Many of these people haven't even eaten here. As for the food, they have the best burgers and best bloody Mary in the area. They stay packed during lunch and dinner rush times. The service can be a little slow at times but the patio seating makes up for this in my opinion.
