On the Grid : The Ship

"A gem in the sea of warehouses, The Ship is the perfect last stop on your West Bottoms pub crawl. Yes, you may feel like you’re walking into an abandoned building from the outside. But walk in and be transported to another place and time. The kitschy, nautical decor is in fact from the original 1935 bar of the same name, discovered in the basement of a West Bottoms warehouse in 2004. Since then it has gone from a speakeasy to liquor license-toting establishment. However, it still maintains that undiscovered charm. Go for the live music and stay for no-fuss drinking." - Faregrounds

The Ship Review - West Bottoms - Kansas City - The Infatuation

"If you’re looking for a spot to get drinks before dinner or just somewhere that has strong cocktails and good bar food, come to The Ship. Their fries are always seasoned to perfection and the Ship-Fil-A Chicken Sandwich claims to pack “all the flavor without the savior.” They often have live music, and you’re sure to see people who were around for the Carter administration dancing with frozen cocktails in hand next to recent college grads taking Fireball shots. During Halloween, when haunted houses pop up in the surrounding warehouses, The Ship is a great place to recover after getting scared sh*tless by a werewolf holding a chainsaw." - Ryan Bernsten

First time visit for me and I can say for sure I will be visiting again. What an interesting venue with a great staff. My wife's band played here and everyone was super helpful and accommodating. The facilities are nicely set up for the talent with room to load in and store gear. Lots of nooks and walkways with two stages that are far enough apart that you wouldn't know the other one was there. Even an indoor diner. Food and drink selection is excellent. Again, I can't say enough good things about the staff. Looking forward to my next visit.

Google
This place has all the character you could ask for in a “gathering place”. A friend told me about this “bar that looks like the inside of an old ship.” I was intrigued, so I went for lunch. The gumbo was delicious. Also, who knew fried green beans were so amazing?!? I sat at the bar, and being a noobie, the bar tender took really good care of me. It was overall a pretty great experience. I am looking forward to catching some live music.

Really unique and fun atmosphere here at The Ship! Interior is decorated like an old wooden ship. Bathrooms are single rooms and have doors with faux porthole. Really fits with the theme. Service in the afternoon on a Saturday was great. Told our server that we were in for a few appetizers and drinks but had to leave in 45 m. Our food, drinks and check were all out in 12 minutes. The fried green beans are wonderful! The fried pickle chips are crispy and perfect. We will be visiting again when we have the urge to shop in the West Bottoms!

Google
Truly a unique place that has great food, excellent service, and great drinks! Been here a few times, and haven't had a bad experience yet. Bartenders are friendly and funny, service is fast, and the food is really good! Very unique bar and resturant and the atmosphere is incredible.

Google
The smoked Mac and cheese with grilled chicken was the best I’ve ever had, and the gumbo was delicious! Our server was awesome, she went to the back to check that the Mac wasn’t made with American cheese which was so nice. Prices were reasonable too with how much food we got. We’ll def be back next time we’re in KC, so glad we found this place!

Google
Great small venue, saw my favorite fusion band - Marbin there. Wish this venue booked more Jazz, Rock and Metal shows! KC needs another great club to pick up where the Riot Room left off.

Google
Great food, the shrimp & sausage skewers are the absolute best. The shrimp po boy is also great. Their chicken sandwich (asked for it spicy) was very good as well. Their gumbo is good, some days it's better than others, but always good. The atmosphere is very laid back with dim lights. Service is good too.

Google
The Ship has a great, cozy atmosphere. Every employee was fantastic, friendly and helpful. Food was good, had the pulled pork. The concert venue in the other room might be my favorite room in town now! First time catching a show there. The sound was great (ears still ringing!). Great place to catch a concert and a bite to eat beforehand.

Yelp
I lived downtown in the 80's and 90's and there wasn't a lot going on at that point and the options for an adult beverage were limited to a handful of old school dive bars inside the business loop: The Office, Joe's Standard, Soakies, The Auditorium...they could all be a bit sketchy after dark, but they were all unique and had great allure for me in my youth after I had escaped the suburbs and found the delights and intrigue of the city life. The Ship was my favorite and was my go-to for several years. The original location at 9th and Cherry was the perfect haunt. Definitely in a seedy neighborhood with a mixture of regulars that included low-income retirees from the nearby rundown apartments, hustlers of all trades, KCAI students and general followers of the stereotypical no-nonsense- but lovable- short Italian evening bartender - Vinnie. Not only did I gravitate here because of the regulars (Cleo- aka Mr. Jolly, Mary #1 and Mary #2) but the space was the most oddly eclectic in the city. The Ship opened in the 1930's and was created to look like the interior of a ship with lifeboats, marine vessel type doors, lightbulbs screwed into the walls that illuminated the murals to look like lighthouses, and with it's dark lighting, large wooden bar, a few rickety tables and a pinball machine and jukebox; The Ship was the hippest and sketchiest place in the metro. A vibe that attracted those looking for the out-of-ordinary and with its location, keeping out the "Westport / PnL" type of partiers. My last visit to the original Ship was in 1993 for a going away party for myself when I took a job in Alaska for a while. Shortly after The Ship was closed to make way for Ilus Davis Park, yet before it was torn down scenes from Robert Altman's "Kansas City" were filmed here and thankfully the interior was salvaged, put into storage and later used to re-birth The Ship for a new 21st century cult following. Using the original interior pieces, they have built a large complex in an old warehouse space in the West Bottoms that not only plays homage to the original, but expands upon the vibe with art, found objects and decor that creates a places that is not a cheap rip-off of the original but a bar and live music venue worthy of this great city. The best renovation and architectural salvation project in town. I was a bit leery to visit at first because of my distant and fond memories, but The "new" Ship now has a returning passenger. My last two visits over the past 3 weeks have been for live music. The Ozark Cobras in the original small space and then for Found -a-Job in the newer larger space. Once again The Ship provided opportunities to run into people from my past life and make some new friends as well, while soaking up the history and nostalgia and enjoying some great music and some local beers. We are blessed in this city to have Knuckleheads in the East Bottoms and The Ship in the West Bottoms - two of the most unique and organic music venues in the midwest. I wish Vinnie and the old gang were here to see it!

Yelp
Always a fun night here, especially for LGBTQ+ events. Could do with a bit more seating, but it's great to have a dance floor so that's just depending on the night. Drinks and food are solid, staff are friendly and helpful. I'd possibly give points off for the audio mixing (?), but I've only heard one band play here. Whoever was in charge of the sound made the lead singer's voice sound like it was cutting in and out.

Yelp
We went here a few months ago to see Jeffrey Lewis perform with the Grasping Straws and everything was amazing. The location is great and the decor is fun. Every employee I dealt with was incredibly friendly. We even got a quick tour of the place when we showed up early. It has a fun little history worth asking about. Drinks were good and to top it off the food was fantastic.

Yelp
A group of us found ourselves in the west bottoms looking for somewhere to eat. My friend's uncle was once in the navy so The Ship seemed like the perfect destination. We weren't wrong. The dining area is a claustrophobic little place, much like a submarine interior, but in an intimate way, as though the seas above were nothing but calm. The menu is small but mighty, full of interesting selections and also vegetarian friendly. The same is true for the drink menu. The servers were super friendly, in a boldly unflinching manner. I'm guessing they don't easily suffer fools but thankfully we didn't test that theory. We had a great dining experience and will happily return, especially to check out the lounge area for some live music and delicious cocktails.

Yelp
My brother and I came here for the live music as all of the live music I could find on a Thursday evening was lacking except for The Ship. Overall, the music was ten plus stars but when we added in a dinner, the experience was very disappointing. The facility is rather eccentric and eclectic with its ship theme but it's pretty cool. Very dive bar vibes in a "dicey" area of the City, The Ship has multiple areas and bars. Our female server was excellent and kept on top of keeping us happy. My mixed drink was weak, but the specialty beer made just for The Ship was decent. Where things went downhill was the food. Today, they could've put one ingredient on the menu and everything else was a side. Salt! The fried pickles were plentiful with a good ranch dip, but seriously over-salted to the point where they were not enjoyable and more than half were tossed. Same with the fries but with whatever seasoning was on them. The gumbo I had was mostly a bland salted roux with a few slivers of meat and the side of shrimp I ordered was overcooked. Garlic bread was nothing great. My brother's Reuben also unfortunately half tossed as it was just not that good although told to us that they cure their own meat for it. The Mac and cheese side was rather good surprisingly. The plan was to get some of the awesome sounding dessert, but after this poor meal, we weren't taking the chance to waste any more money. So, if not for the awesome music of Lucas Parker and Friends, The Ship was just about sunk for us. The staff and quirkiness helped keep it afloat for one star, and another for the music. About $75 for two people, a cocktail, beer, tea, two sides and two mains. Not worth it tonight.

Yelp
This is a super fun and one of the most unique venues in KC. It's large with different rooms for dinner, drinks, and live music. And the ambiance is on point with the nautical theme. We started with some drinks and dinner. I went with one of their drink specials, the Dragonfruit margarita-Silver Tequila, fresh lime, agave, and dragonfruit. It was really sweet and summery. This would be fantastic on a hot summer evening on their patio. My partner ordered a fig Manhattan and thought it was good. I ordered the Cubano: shaved ham, salami, roasted pork loin, swiss cheese, pickles, mayo and mustard, pressed french roll. This version reminded me of a Cuban that the foundry had before they closed. It was one of my favorites and I'm so glad I ordered this one. I love the addition of the salami and I appreciate the pressed French roll. I'd definitely order it again. I upgraded my side to the smoked Mac and cheese: creamy classic mac and cheese, hickory smoked Kansas City style. This was some of the best Mac and cheese that I've had in KC. I would totally order it by itself as an entree. My partner tried the KC Reuben: hickory smoked pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, kc special thousand island, marbled rye. He said it had good flavor but the meat was a little on the fatty side. But he still ate it and said it was overall good. He also tried the coleslaw. He said it was alright. It had celery and red peppers so it was a little non traditional and it was chopped pretty large. We also ordered a cup of the chicken and sausage gumbo. It also had a good flavor and we'd definitely order it again. After dinner we made our way over to the music venue side. They do have a few tables throughout but you'd need to arrive early to snag one because they fill up fast. They also have bars in a few different locations so you can easily grab a drink. The dance floor in the middle is fun. It quickly filled up with people and there were even some dance offs. Definitely check out this spot and grab food, drinks, and listen to some music.

Yelp
While on my birthday adventure downtown, this was our first stop on a Thursday for lunch. I've been looking for a place in KC with good red beans and rice and wanted to try. They were really good, but boyfriend had the gumbo and I actually liked it a bit more...both were great! The service was wonderful, great little local place in the West Bottoms. I want to go back for some live music...it looks like they mix it up with what kind of music they have, but I'm sure it would be great. The parking was a little rough, but it's what you'd expect in the Bottoms. We made friends at the bar and had a great time! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Excellent Reuben sandwich, tasted as if smoked. Blvd Nutcracker Ale was on tap, so good. Excellent service. Love this place visited on a Saturday around 3 pm when the other West Bottom restaurants weren't open. Can't help but love this

Yelp
I can't believe it took me so long to come here. It's a large venue space and I enjoyed it. The food is good, The drinks are good, service is great, and the music is even better! I highly recommend

Yelp
Our server was nice and friendly. The food was pretty good. My red beans and rice were kinda bland. My husband enjoyed his shrimp po boy. The one negative thing was someone in our party walked into an area where there was a bar and an employee came up to her and said what are you doing here and she said I'm just looking. He said "get out" very rudely. She saw when she walked out of the doors which were propped open that there were 2 little signs that said "ship crew only". So while it's understandable that she wasn't supposed to be there - the way she was spoken to was completely rude and unnecessary.

Yelp
Such a fun atmosphere and consistently great food! Service is a bit hit or miss; not overly kind or helpful, but the food makes up for that easily.

Yelp
Let me tell you about "The Ship". The original "Ship" was a lounge that operated from about 1935 until 1995. The original location's real estate was scraped to make way for Ilus Davis Park. The owners dismantled the bar, took all of the furnishings and bric-à-brac, and put them in storage. In 2004, the current owners obtained these artifacts, and recreated The Ship in its current space. The area surrounding The Ship is in transition. It looks like it was a warehouse district, and the buildings are being repurposed or redeveloped. The bartender told me that it isn't unheard of for someone on a controlled substance to lash out and break a car window. Beyond that, the area is safer than it appears at first glance. The bar can be described as being separated into two spaces, each with its own stage. On slow nights, they operate one room. This venue hosts live music. If you check out their website (www.theshipkc*com), you'll see that the genre of music varies from night to night. There might be a cover to pay for the entertainment. Basic drink prices are really reasonable. I spent an evening, had more than a few beers and mixed drinks, and my tab was less than $30.00 before gratuity. Cover charge for the band was $10.00. I was staying near KCLive. The Ship was out of the way, compared to a lot of options. But my visit was worth the time and effort to get there.

Yelp
Went for lunch and it was super cute. The interior is decorate with lots of nautical ship items. Started with the Bloodhound drink. It was good, a gin with grapefruit. For an app we had the green beans. They were delicious and crispy The Mac and cheese is creamy. I had pulled pork on this side. It was a little more fatty than I like The Cuban was decent. Staff were quick and kind. Would definitely go back to try dinner
google avatar

Lindsey L.

Yelp
The Ship is a fantastic local spot from lunch to late night to even hosting large events in their All Else The Seas Lounge. As president of the party planning committee at my work, I was tasked with organizing the holiday party and choosing The Ship as our venue. We leaned into the venue with the theme "Tis The SEASon" and it was a hit. They were super accommodating and flexible with everything from the in-house catered menu to the event time, set-up, guest count and signature cocktails (and mocktails)! For a party spot, their food is surprisingly solid. All in all, I'm always down to go to The Ship for a happy hour or hang and would love to host a party in their event space again sometime soon. Check their website for upcoming public/ticketed events and live music.

David S.

Yelp
Loved the venue, the staff and was excited to see the offerings on the menu. Unfortunately the food was a little disappointing. My wife had red beans and chicken. Red beans were very under seasoned and bland, but the chicken breast was on point. I had a shrimp poboy with gumbo and was disappointed to receive a huge sandwich with five little shrimp which didn't cover half of the sandwich, especially for the price. With a little more shrimp , it could have been good. The gumbo was watery and underseasoned. I didn't see where a roux (that was stated in the menu) was even present. Being from southern Louisiana, I was hoping for a little more. We will return, but will probably choose different option from the menu.
google avatar

Crys F.

Yelp
This is the cutest bar, and small music venue that I've been to in awhile! The wait staff is exceptional, and we even got to see one of our favorite bartenders from another location working here. We will be back for other shows!
google avatar

Charley B.

Yelp
How do you make one of the coolest venues in town better? You expand into the empty space next door. The Ship still has its original space, where you can dine in and watch a happy hour band, but it's expanding next door to include a large event space. There's a lot to like. There's a lot more room, too. There's also a large bar staffed by bartenders who are happy to pour an adult beverage for you. The entertainment schedule features a variety of bands and djs. Jazz, big band, old country, rock, Latin and more are included. There's something for everybody. The sound is first rate. The lights could be better, but you won't have any problem seeing or hearing who you came to see.
google avatar

Bailey K.

Yelp
Super fun spot. Staff are phenomenal and very polite. The food was fine but that's not really what this spot is for. The drinks were great! This place is huge with many different rooms. Nicely decorated with fun ship decor and dim lighting It's in the west bottoms and you definitely won't think you're in the right place if you've never been over there before.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
This review is about The Ship (original bar) and not the "All Else the Sea" bar and larger venue. We made reservations for four and headed down to give The Ship a try. We believe that the concept was going to be a nautical speakeasy. The decorations and theming was nautical in nature, but at an average level. Since we were there to drink, we focused on the cocktail menu. One word: uninspiring. I had the Maple Barrel Old Fashioned.. what I received was the basic rock glass full of ice, a shot or Rye, splash of bitters, and a cherry.. no hint whatsoever of maple.. The staff was less than engaging and somewhat flat with their interaction. We were so uninspired that we settled up, I got in the car and drove over to J Riegers.
google avatar

Robert F.

Yelp
I think this is a new favourite in KC! I showed up here for a date and assumed by the band we would have good music... but didn't expect much else. This is where I was WRONG! The super friendly staff helped us figure out all of the best options since neither of us was that hungry but knew we needed food before we went off to further adventures. I ordered an appetizer of Sausages and Shrimp which was absolutely delicious. My date picked a cuban sandwich.. this was absolutely one of the best version I have ever had! We had a few drinks that were also fantastic. My date had one of the house ones that was amazing. Mine was nothing more than an Old Fashioned but it was made perfectly. Go check this place out!

Yelp
What a cool dive bar. Came here Saturday night around 6:30 and at in the back room with no live music. Loved the decor, drinks were strong and reasonably priced and the whole place was very cool. A little off the beaten path but worth the trip.
google avatar

Cheri M.

Yelp
This place is basically a bar with some food. Very cool vibe walking in. I could hang out at this place a lot even though I don't drink. I had lunch with a bunch of lady friends. I ordered the classic cheeseburger with blue cheese and bacon apple jam. So yummy! It comes with chips or you can order fries for a small price. This place seems like it would be a fun place to go at nighttime since there's live music. I just might do that :) If you want to go to a cool, interesting place come here.
google avatar

Maggie C.

Yelp
What a fun place, hidden in the west bottoms, for live music, drink, and food. Heads up, if you're coming into the restaurant only, and there is a live band playing, they will still make you pay the 10$ cover before you go to your seat for food. The restaurant was decent! I ordered a Cesar salad with chicken along with some fries. I did ask for no croutons, maybe our waiter took that as no garlic bread either (which comes with the entree size), which was actually perfect since I have a gluten allergy. Cesar dressing comes vegetarian. There were several vegetarian options, and we had a vegetarian in our small group, so it was appreciated. Another person in the group had ordered the red beans and rice entree, but was presented with the gumbo. This normally would have been fine, except my friend does not eat beef, and accidentally consumed some, thinking she got red beans and rice. So, the kitchen was a bit off that night. Service was a bit slow. We got our drinks really quickly, but it did take quite a bit of time before our waiter came back for food orders, or for food to come out. Since we were told we needed to pay the cover for restaurant entrance, we went ahead and stayed for a little bit afterwards too. Lots of seating and standing room, tropical plants everywhere in the front, and a full bar available.

Yelp
I usually come here at night for the music but decided to come for dinner one day. Turns out they were also playing live music this night inside as well on a random Tuesday. It's impossible to hear anyone talk when there's music inside so be aware! Luckily it was nice enough to sit outside. Got the chicken sandwich and it was delicious. The fries are to die for . Large portion. Great taste. The atmosphere and music is usually great and it's a good time too!!! I do enjoy this place.
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
The food was delivered quickly, lots to choose from especially on the vegetarian side. Got a cup of Mac n cheese and shared veggies nachos during happy hour before heading to a show. Fun space, the service was a little wonky but they were filling up on Friday so no harm, no foul! Love this place as a dancing venue, bar hangout and dinner spot!
google avatar

Faith B.

Yelp
This is a classic KC joint. On a recent visit back I just had to visit with my BF who had never been there. My prior visits were all night time visits for drinks. We stopped in for a late lunch. His Cubano was excellent and much enjoyed. I had a veggie Cubano, which was also great. I have an excellent Vieux Carre. Fun atmosphere and solid service make this a go-to. Who knew the dining was so good? Now that you do, you should go try it.
google avatar

Elle R.

Yelp
Such an amazing atmosphere and concept, definitely unexpected after driving through the area! Drinks were great, service top-notch, and I loved that there is plenty of space for people to spread out.

Ronnie R.

Yelp
This place is humble and cozy and unique with reallly great humans working here in a cool industrial area of West Bottoms - feels like home. Food & drinks were on point - can't wait to come back
google avatar

Phon W.

Yelp
Met a friend here for lunch in a random Tuesday and it was awesome!!! I didn't even know this place had a kitchen. The fried pickles are really good! I had the shrimp po boy, and it was amazing, The bread was awesome.
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to seeing this place because, hello, it looks like you're on a ship! How could you say no to that!? Well, didn't make it but 10 feet in the door when the bouncer said it would cost $10 to get in. If the popular jazz clubs in town are only $5 at the door, and they have live music, there is no way I'm ever paying $10 to get into a place that blasts music over a speaker.
google avatar

Roberto B.

Yelp
Best bbq on the block. There isn't really a reason to go elsewhere. The people are very friendly too

Patti C.

Yelp
Gumbo is flat, not vibrant, as are the cocktails. Appetizers better. Staff also doesn't seem motivated to give you a good time, just brings drinks and food without any personality. Prices are reasonable and atmosphere in old bar is wild. But ultimately, bring your own crew or don't expect to be entertained.

Mary P.

Yelp
Absolutely a great time! The fried pickles were tasty and salty, and so good drinks are reasonably priced and the clientele is like going into cheers, welcoming throng of people.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
The ship is a fun place to go on a night out. I especially love the live music, fun and eclectic decor, and dance floor. The drinks are a decent price, and actually taste great. Service is fast and the bartenders are kind. Overall, such an inviting and lively space. The cover is on the higher side, but well worth the good times in my opinion.
google avatar

Toni A.

Yelp
Yum! Went for a birthday dinner. Sadly, it was just us and a couple at another table, so plenty of room to social distance. Great cocktails, super friendly staff and solid food made our experience delightful. Masks required. Reservations recommended. Live music is on hold- but hope it returns soon. This is a true gem in the west bottoms and they as well as the other local businesses and restaurants need our support. Takeout available.
google avatar

Yelp
Food very good ; service very good; neat old warehouse ; interesting use of historical building;
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
So much fun! Music crosses multiple genres and very unique space. Food was good and drinks were affordable. Cover was steep for KC ($15/person) but we had a blast so no regrets.
google avatar

Netanya B.

Yelp
I had the shrimp roll. It has a nice spicy Buffalo and shrimp was breaded and crunchy. The bread was overwhelming so I ended up eating just the shrimp when I was half way done with the sandwich. I ordered a side of Mac and cheese. It was good for a side, very creamy and smoky but not very cheesy. I wouldn't order that as a full entree. I loved that it was decorated to make it feel you were on a ship. Great place go check out if you need a place to eat and sit down at west bottoms.
google avatar

De'ja M.

Yelp
What a place was referred to go to the shit by a associate last night. The atmosphere is very quirky and subtle they have live music gratefully we entry before the rush happen. As we approach the counter the lady in the red shirt I felt rushed us but maybe that's just their atmosphere. We sat at the bar above the entrance it was a nice spot the pool table was next to us. We ordered drinks which consisted of Lavender mint, pineapple coconut drink and Hamms beer. The food consisted of a Poboy shrimp Ruben in grilled chicken and fries. We wanted our fries crispy, but that wasn't an option. Great event space.
google avatar

Marcus S.

Yelp
Great service at the bar on a Saturday night. This place is unique with multi rooms offering different music genres. The ship feels like a ship without the sea sickness, unless you go overboard on drinks. Low prices for the city! Certain nights, you'll have techno in one room and salsa dancing in another. Amazing venue and view from the back deck outside of the city at night.
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
Had previously only been to the Ship at night to drink, but had a surprisingly tasty meal during 2022 restaurant week! We sat at a high top where the dance floor usually is, and we really enjoyed the vibe of the place. Super interesting art on the walls. The cocktails that came with dinner were fun. Both the smoked duck breast and the trout entrees were tasty! Plenty of random street parking on the surrounding blocks. Definitely enjoyed The Ship both for dinner and for a night out!

Yelp
Another restaurant week stop to try a new place. This one didn't disappoint. The interior does make you feel like your on a ship and is so cool. Seating is broken up between like three rooms with the largest seating being in the bar area. Our waitress was so nice and so helpful. Great service all Around. I didn't order off the KCRW as I really wanted to try the shrimp po boy. It was huge and was sooo good. Came with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. The shrimp were large and had great flavor just wish there had been a couple Morris on there. I just cut them in half so I couLd hh are some I in every bite. Fries were good but also sparse. Overall great food and want to go back to try many other things on the menu.

Yelp
Been to the ship a couple of times for happy hour and lunch. First, the place is so funky! The back bar is my favorite! Every time I've been the drinks and service have been great. The spicy margarita is SPICY, so be prepared. The painkiller is a great balance of boozy and fruity. I was very impressed with the veggie cubano- our server recommended it and she was right- the herbed cream cheese on it is incredible. Fries have been good every time I've had them, fresh and crispy. If you're in the west bottoms, check it out!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for some time. My wife and I visited on a late Saturday afternoon. We drove around the building to the alley. Parked, and made our way through the smells of 420 and cigarette smoke, to the bar where we were told to sit anywhere we'd like. The decor is simply amazing! One of the best themed venues in KC. Definitely picture worthy. A gentlemen walked over, provided us our menus. I asked there was "...a whiskey menu or is everything listed?" Server said everything was listed. So I looked, and there was no whiskey listed, except for in the cocktails. Not a whiskey bar. He took our drink orders, brought them back, but I'm afraid he may have fallen overboard because I don't think I saw him for the rest of the time we were there. We flagged down a server and she took our food order. My wife ordered beans and rice. Loved it! I ordered the Ship-Fil-A chicken sandwich. It was amazing! Food 4/5 stars! It seemed that like there was a great deal happening. DJ was preparing his booth. Bands were unloading their equipment and preparing for their show in another part of the building, and employees were moving around all over the place. Worth visiting for lunch? Yes. Should you expect amazing service? Meh, just go with the flow. Should you go during the night when the place is hopping? Maybe....it sounds like they have a great night life when the clubs start jumpin'! You'll always want to see if there is a theme night for the dance parties!

Yelp
Weird vibes from the bartenders. After not being served while standing at the bar, we asked if we could get a drink, and the two bartenders, looked each other and asked if they "had a tiny violin for our whining", and then wouldn't serve us. It was kind of a super awkward moment and a vibe kill for our group so we ended up leaving. I'm not 100% sure why the bartender to be so passive aggressive, they definitely gave bullying vibes to the patrons. (To elaborate, before this, a female at the bar got upset because she said we bumped into her elbow, mind you this was a Saturday night and she was reading a comic book at the bar. I would assume the bartenders knew her because she got up and walked out and from that point on, they were super awkward with us and wouldn't serve us).

Yelp
This place was absolutely awful. We stood at the first bar and didn't get served for 10 minutes so we went to the second bar and a patron at the bar immediately said we were touching her and to back away while we were waiting for a drink. We apologized and continued to wait for a drink and she again looked from her comic book to tell us we didn't understand spatial boundaries and the bartender then asked if we had a problem and refused to serve us then asked if we needed a tiny violin to leave. Completely unprofessional, will never be back

Yelp
I'm here for first Friday and Mother's Day weekend....Woooohoooo! Very spacious place with excellent social distancing. Seating is large picnic tables and stools for those who prefer the bar. Nice jazz playing in the background and cool decor (brick walls, rustic hardwood floors) This is a great place to chill, enjoy the music and unwind from the week... Oh and the sausage/shrimp skewers and chicken/sausage gumbo isn't bad.

Yelp
We made reservations for Kansas City Restaurant Week here in the "All Else The Sea" side (we were with my parents and figured this was the safest option). This side is next to the original Ship but with more space to allow for social distancing. As usual, it's hard to find real vegetarian options during KCRR, but The Ship had both a dinner and lunch option. It also looks like they normally have a few vegetarian options on their regular menu. I had the dinner option which came with a drink, app, entree, and dessert. I got an old fashioned and the hummus to start... the hummus was good but not exceptional. For my entree I had the smoked vegetable curry. The curry was actually pretty darned good. For dessert I had the lemon tart which was also good. Overall, my experience at The Ship was good, but the new section was pretty cold (which was exacerbated by them having their fans on... and no, they were not going clockwise to bring down warm air). I know that this section was thrown together during the pandemic, but I probably would have stayed for another drink if I wasn't frozen. In any case, The Ship frequently updates their menu and I look forward to dining and drinking in their main section in the future.
