The Best Dive Bars in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Multnomah Village occupies an odd sort of bowtie intersection along Capitol Highway, and features a handful of intriguing saloons just off the main drag. Wander down the steep slope of 35th and you’ll encounter a tavern seemingly carved into the landscape of a jaunty nautical mural. This ship isn’t of the cruise liner variety — everything has been worn down over the years and the decor is mainly Pirates of the Caribbean swag and old beer signs — but there are touches of elegance in the cracked marble back bar and framed sepia-toned photographs of handsome old schooners. There are fancier bars on the West side, and far less nice ones, too, but there’s no place quite like the Ship." - Ben Coleman

Fun atmosphere with lots of TV’s for all of the football. Portable, lottery and pinball. Simple eats but good. Bar was quick and solid. Bartender was friendly and service was him and also good. We had cocktails and nachos and watched some football. Nice stop in after walking around Multnomah Village. Food carts down the street. Parking is a bit dicey with no parking lot but we lucked out with parking right in front. Tons of pedestrians so keep an eye out.

I had a great time my Bartender Rachel wasn't only really cool but very cute too. The service was great. Wonderful neighborhood bar in Portland highly suggest you stop in

Google
This is a small sports bar in Multnomah Village. The service was excellent, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable; very helpful. The food was terrific! A nice, clean and cozy atmosphere. There are several t.v.s with different sports and one with shows as well as some betting machines if you prefer to play games instead. I enjoyed my visit and will definitely be back!

Google
Tuesday open mic with Sarah is so fun and welcoming! The Hot dog with the works and the hummus plate are my favorite things from the menu. Always have a good time here and have been coming back for years!

Google
Standard bar. Service was okay, not overly friendly. Didn’t try the food. Lots of seating. Darts and gambling machines.

Google
Went there for the Chicago Bears playoff game and was not disappointed at the Chicago fan turnout. Numerous TVs and very cool artifacts around the bar. Food was okay, but beers were inexpensive and the entertainment was just what we were looking for. Bear down!

Google
I went for the Open Mic on Tuesday, so it wasn't a lively weekend. It's a good dive bar with decent food.

Andrew N

Google
Stopped to play VP. I believe 6 poker machines. Usually, one or two are available. I don't drink, so I can't comment on that. A few sexy women that I wouldn't mind....I have never ate if they even serve food, so again, no comment.

Yelp
Total dive neighborhood bar but heavy handed beverages and good eats!!! Weekend live music outside and overall very interesting vibe but be cautious and patient only two behind the bar and be nice!!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
We had just came from a lively evening and needed to cap off our night at a dive bar. Had some beers, fit all of the criteria that a dive bar demands with colorful characters and live music.
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted to go to this tavern for years finally made it about a week ago. It's one of the last great dive bars in Portland. We went to hear the bottleneck blues band there and they were good, but the volume was way too loud. It was a nice mix of younger people and everyone in our group was around 70 - fun evening.

Yelp
Some friends in the neighborhood and I have gone here twice for their bar trivia nights. It's pretty fun! I'm kind of surprised that this place is as empty as it is. Both nights that we've gone, we've ordered the meatballs and a hummus platter, and I ordered an Italian sandwich for myself. There are TVs every which way you turn, and there is some seating on the sidewalk for the smokers. The meatballs include some garlic bread on the side, and are covered in a chunky marinara sauce with a dusting of parmesan cheese. At $8, it's a good amount of food and tasty, too. Everyone in my party has some kind of sensitivity, so we've ordered them without the cheese and the sauce on the side, and the servers did not bat an eye. The hummus platter is massive! A very generous portion of hummus with tortilla chips, olives, carrots, tomatoes, celery, and probably some other things that I didn't take note of for dipping. Great to munch on through a trivia night! The Italian sandwich is an unexpected gem. Served on ciabatta bread, it's served hot and absolutely piled high with meats. Served with a bag of sea salt kettle chips and a pickle spear. You can order a "single" or a "double" and the double is literally a second sandwich. The single is enough if you're a hungry guy, but the double is perfect if you're starving. As to the drinks, we've usually ordered beers, and they have a pretty good selection. My friend did order an old fashioned one night and said it was decent. The weird thing about this place is the layout of the men's room. It wants to be a multi-user space as the door doesn't lock, but there are no privacy dividers or anything. The urinal and toilet are mounted opposite each other, so one person has to stare at the back of the other (the urinal has been broken both times I've been there). On top of this, there's a sightline from the door into the room directly to the toilet, so...awkwardness abounds.

Yelp
service was spectacular! Long Islands were great and pool tables were open. I suck at pool but Jacob killed it!

Mike T.

Yelp
Great Chicago's dog. And friendly staff. Also good selection of video machines. Prices are very reasonable

Lily K.

Yelp
Live music is too loud. :( I'm a musician myself and find that the music is just a tad too loud for the space itself. It makes me resent the band when I know that's not their fault at all. If it could be turned down more patrons would appreciate.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE. That is all Nice to just pop in for a beer. The bartender is nice and plays frisbee golf. Funny guy. They serve food, have games on tv, and an assortment of arcade games.
google avatar

Ariel S.

Yelp
Nice spot to watch the game or hang out with friends. It's definitely a dive bar. I came here on a sunday so it was a little slow but I was informed it can get quite packed. The girls at the bar were very friendly and helpful. They have a full bar and a little stage for dancing. They do live music sometimes and will have promo girls come in for sampling.
google avatar

Robert N.

Yelp
Dark dive sports bar with pool, pinball, and poker machines. Good service and beers but menu is severely lacking. Eat somewhere else in the village and come here for drinks.
google avatar

Brandon T.

Yelp
Chill dive on the outskirts of Portland. I nice find that I definitely plan on returning if my travels take me back to the area.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Came here for drinks and was very pleasantly surprised by the experience. I've lived in Multnomah Village for five years but never thought it looked like a nice place from the outside and so I never visited. But it was great! Really outstanding bartenders, very large (and good) beer selection, good prices, and a young vibe. Pool, trivia night, good seating. I'll definitely come back here again!
google avatar

Dominique N.

Yelp
Love this dive bar! Cheap drinks and really friendly service. It's a great place to gather with friends. I love that they have live music, but it usually is a little too loud for me and makes it hard to talk to people. Many bars are like that, but this one especially so.
google avatar

Michael V.

Yelp
I hadn't been here in ages and went last Friday late afternoon. It was the same but different. Seems like they have cleaned it up a tad and the beer selection was better than I remembered it. Still great pool and darts. I would recommend this place for low key games and beers.
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
Here on a Friday night, and the bartenders are straight up angels. Such good vibes, solid prices, and great times. Would definitely trek out to the 'burbs for this again. (Yeah, I said it... it's the 'burbs.)
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Best bartenders, great music Kicked up the sports and TVs Great sandwiches Multnomah village, so plenty to do Again, bartenders make the place for sure
google avatar

Lindsey W.

Yelp
Stopped in to gather with a group of friends last Friday night. I had been in once or twice before but it was years ago so I didn't recall much about the place. We were immediately greeted by a bartender who pointed out the tap list on the two TV screens by the door. They had a great range of beers on tap from various local breweries. Much more of a selection compared to your typical dive bar. The two bartenders working were very attentive and super friendly whenever we approached the bar to order another round. So kudos to them for their excellent service! As for the bar's entertainment offerings - it's a pretty wide open space filled with various games like pinball, big buck, two pool tables and a darts board (not electronic). TVs are mounted around the room to watch sports games. There are both tables and booths to accommodate groups of varying sizes and of course the bar top itself if you are just stopping in for a drink on your own. Definitely a neighborhood gem!

Yelp
Was there last week, the bartender was badass and we got our drinks in a semi timely manner. However, why on earth would management only have one bartender on to service the entire bar? She was cooking, serving AND BARTENDING for at least 30 people. Granted it was a Tuesday, but it was prime hours. J just think that is unnecessary stress to put on one person. And it took like 20 min of standing at the bar to get the bill because of it. Managers; wise up and hire a table runner
google avatar

Jeni F.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere! Really enjoyed Tevis Hodge, Jr's Blues Band!!! Tom D Bomb's potato salad is killer!!!
google avatar

Taylor R.

Yelp
If you were looking for a classic dive bar in the Multnomah Village area, look no further! Decent tap selections and decent mixed drinks.
google avatar

Nina H.

Yelp
Since they have changed ownership they have more beer on tap which is awesome and there is also more seating. The main problem is it was the only place in the village with two pool tables and now they only have one which means there is no reason to go there during the weekend. And I miss the Ship just having sports on TV, because now they show really intense surgeries and Disney shows on some of the tv's which is very odd...
google avatar

Desiree K.

Yelp
Love this place any day of the week! Servers are the best. And they DO accept cards, have for a while.
google avatar

Wennie H.

Yelp
I love this place. I just moved to the SW area and love all things nautical so naturally imagine my surprise to find this spot. Having lived in Seattle and Austin, I love a good dive bar. Anyways, I came in last night (Thursday) to celebrate finishing my first week of grad school and it was great because 1) long weekend 2) semi empty bar 3) awesome and friendly service 4) good selection of beer (I opted for the Bridgeport Stumptown Tart) and 4) just a great neighborhood spot. My only qualm would be food but I hadn't been intending to eat, though the bartender did tell me they were working on the menu. I had a hot dog (only option) because I was starving and it was hot, hot, hot! Adding that to the heat I was clearly sweating all the toxins out of my body.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Great beer selection (24 taps), great service. Low key. Pool + darts available. Thanks Roni!
google avatar

Johnny H.

Yelp
Awesome Bar in Multnomah Village, beer and liquor now. Close to Lewis and Clark College and PCC Sylvania. I think they are under new ownership, now take credit cards, have an actual food menu and have put in some nice looking buddy bars and tables that actually look like a ship deck. 24 beer taps with local craft beers as well as the old canned stand byes like Hamms, olympia, etc. They still have some of the old Chicago Decor but definitely are cleaning it up... still looks like the old bar, but has some nice touches to make you want to come back... pool table, golf game, buck hunter, darts are all still available. I noticed an outside speaker while having a cigar... tons of tv's for College football and NFL, they also had the MLB package when I was there. Great space to watch a game, enjoy a beer, and some food. Try the hummus or the baked spinach and artichoke dip... yummy!
google avatar

Olivia T.

Yelp
The Ship isn't pretending to be something else.. The Ship is a D-I-V-E where you can get frozen mini pizza for $2.50... Still hungry? Munch on pretzels and dry snacks... This ain't bar that serves "real" food. If you don't mind munching on processed food and drink Pabst while listening to tunes from the jukebox than this tavern is for you. Even though it's a dive, this is one of the better taverns in Multnomah Village area...bring your cash, you will need it.
google avatar

Karen E.

Yelp
This is a Chicago sports fans bar for sure. I went here to watch the Bears lose to the Packers. It was filled with Bears fans which was totally fine. The bar was dingy with run down chairs and stools. Total dive bar, which in itself isn't a problem either. The worse part? Watching the barmaid refill the pretzel containers at all the tables. She would dump the uneaten pretzels from your container back into her much larger container. Then she would scoop out a refilled container and plop it back on your table. Cross contamination much? I'm SO glad I didn't eat any of the pretzels. GROSS!!!! Cash only establishment and cheap greasy eats. Judging the lack of proper food sanitation just for the pretzels I would never eat anything else there. Eat at your own risk.
google avatar

Ajia T.

Yelp
Pros: Old dive bar with nautical theme. Excellent jukebox. Free peanuts on Thursdays. Cheap, good, cold beer. Friendly service. Good place for a quick cold one or to linger with friends. Cons: Cash only. Beer & wine only. No food worthy of eating (they usually recommend that you eat elsewhere). This is a place where you drink and hang out, not sip on a 7&7 and flaunt your new pair of chinos. The owner is from Chicago, so there's usually a Cubs game on. Pool is free on Sundays (as mentioned below by David M.), but take some advice from a pool shark, the tables are way short.

Raynee R.

Yelp
Honestly, I've never had such terrible service. We walked in super excited, and the bartender ignored us. When we asked for a drink she told us she had a long day and would get to us later. Needless to say we won't be back. $5 that could have been spent else where. The ship, more like the SHIT. Ronnie. She's not the best.
google avatar

Lizzie B.

Yelp
Ridiculously smoky. Check. Funky tables made of shellacked tree trunks. Check. Cash only for a crappy beer selection. Check. Only seats taken are at the video crack machines. Check. Weary, over-worked patrons that make you pray your lifestyle doesn't make you look THAT bad. Check. Big winner for the diveist bar in the Village: The Ship
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
The Ship is simply your quintessential dive bar. I haven't been for a while, but not for any particular reason. It's an ultra local joint with good history. Picture that dark and danky local bar with the 40 year old bartender that looks 70 from 25 years of smoking and a handful of guys in trucker hats and grey mustache's. Yeah, that kind of place. Those expecting anything more than a dive with grease bomb bar food will be disappointing. Those who seek out places with innate history and character who are looking for cheap drinks and a local vibe, will be pleased. They have several pool tables that are not in the best shape. They used to have a rule (not sure if they still do) where if you dropped a pool cue they'd fine you $0.25. Which I thought was kinda neat. Last I remember, cash only.
google avatar

Wink J.

Yelp
I always start with my definition of a Good Dive Bar: "Neighborhood joint w/lots of local, friendly characters; dark & dingy from 60+ years of pre-smoking ban fine aging; some sense of history and pride, with photos, etc. covering most wall-space; charming bartenders who get behind the bar for a drink when they're off their shift; stiff drinks at reasonable or cheap prices; no happy hour B.S. - just cheaper drinks before 6-8PM." The Ship is the place where you get Lewis & Clark drinkie students hanging out with people who've been banned from Renner's, a block away. Known amongst my disbanded circle of friends as "The Ship Bzzzt! Bzzzt! - because the neon sign was very glitchy and constantly making "Bzzzzzt!" noises - and would shock yr butt if you tried to touch it. - is a little less dive with a little more pub. No hard liquor, no credit cards, OK? Listed in the first edition of the "Guide to Portland Bars" book, this is more a beer & peanuts joint, where all the shells get thrown on the floor, so if you show up late, it's "crunch-crunch" as you walk. Never tried the food, stuck to the peanuts. Some one else complained in a review that "uneaten pretzels were dumped back into a container" - yup, it's that kinda place. If you don't like your food & drink a little dusty, you might want to pass. Some regulars are friendly, some are not; both make it clear. Like Nick's, this place has a sport's love: The Chicago Bears. If you're rooting for them to win or lose, this is the place. On nights w/o a Bears game, the jukebox has plenty to offer.
google avatar

Teri J.

Yelp
Best dive bar we've been in for quite some time. Ronnie was the best ever! We will definitely be back Good sandwiches and dogs. Homemade potato salad was good. And great selection of beers. And they have bubbles too
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
This place is great! It smells a bit like diapers and bleach, but you get used to it after a while. Pool $0.25 A couple pickled eggs and a handful of pretzels & 16 +/- beers, and this place feels like paradise. I would recommend this place to those who like to drink all day--and all night.

Cody B.

Yelp
A great spot to grab a beer. Roni was our bartender and made the experience great. Good recommendations and amazing sandwich. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Kendrah W.

Yelp
Roni is fantastic! Super friendly, on top of the drinks and always fun! We always have a great time at The Ship.
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
The Ship is a fun place to go to play pool or listen to live music on the weekend. They have a great staff of friendly barkeeps and servers and a wonderful selection of micros. The music is always free and fabulous and they microbrew hosted events with free tastings almost every week.
google avatar

Isaac C.

Yelp
This is a great spot for locals and visitors. Their trivia is great, the slots, their subs, and most of all Rachel has been super energetic over the last year. Nicole has made my subs and never fails to add extra love to the toasting process. Hands down best staff. Don't forget the nuts on the far left, they delicious. Also as a fisherman, the bell adds character. One day I will ring it.
google avatar

April D.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar with friendly, sassy bartenders. Rachel is sweet and attentive every time! Good place to watch the Blazers game, plenty of TVs, and never too crowded.
google avatar

Rob C.

Yelp
Ordered a drink. Really wanted to like this place. Upper end divey on the inside. Love red light. Pool table was just re-felted but not level. Would've dropped $50 in drinks and food if table was level and bartender (tall, hair in ponytail--see timestamp on review if yr the owner and care) didn't take 15 mins to get to me with 4 people at bar when I asked for a menu, then realized it would prob be better just to close out. Will try again for karaoke on another night. Menu looked incredible, would love to change review at some point. She's not a bad bartender. Just inattentive. Pool table is a 2 minute fix.
google avatar

Rylee O.

Yelp
The Ship isn't anything to write home to Mom about . . . heck it probably isn't even a place I would tell my Mom I went . . . but it knows what/who it is. Beer and wine. Cash bar. Snacks out of bags. Sometimes you just want a beer without pretention, and The Ship is the place for that.
google avatar

Neal D.

Yelp
The Ship Tavern: I think I'm in love. This little Multnomah Village establishment might not look like much from the outside. To be honest, it's not really much. But it is a welcoming place, as long as you can put up with Chicago sports. Free peanuts. Great selection of beer. They've even got a selection of hot toddies. The long-short: don't pass it up just because it's a neighborhood dive. It's pretty phenomenal.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
A previous post mentioned this place doesn't take cards. But I came tonight and they do take cards. I like this place. Perfect level of five and fun games. Plus it's close to a lot of other places.
google avatar

Jean S.

Yelp
If you want a "neighborhood bar" feel with down to earth, friendly people and no frills - this is the place to go. My husband and I heard about it via word of mouth and started going on Sundays to watch the Bears games. We're both from the mid-west and this bar reminds us of bars back home. Bottom line - it is what it is. Like another reviewer said - it's not trying to be something it isn't. For me, that's the charm in it and why I keep going back. Cash only - yeah, it may be inconvenient but if it keeps the prices cheap, then it works for me.
google avatar

Marianne W.

Yelp
We went last night after a great dinner at Corbett Fishhouse. We were celebrating my friends 40th birthday. It was hopping. There was a live band playing covers and they were really good. The people watching and beer selection were great. I can walk here from my house, I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
The service is good! The live music Saturday nights sucks! The place is too small for live music. Plus it's a sports bar so no need for live music. Way more expensive than the old ship but things change.

Steve B.

Yelp
I rate four stars because I'm rounding up from 3.5 it's definitely above average. The Ship continues to improve over time in terms of beer and food choices, they now offer 24 taps and a full bar. The sandwiches are great. Prices are the best around for pool, drinks and food. Service is excellent, with friendly bartenders who check on you regularly. The best thing about the Ship is that it has a nice music vibe with a house system and no juke box. The tunes are eclectic but always awesome, including a lot of classic rock that you don't hear every day, stuff like the Band, G-dead, Led Zep, Alvin Lee, etc. it's fun to hang out, meet up with friends, play pool or watch sports at the Ship. It's a fabulous neighborhood sports dive. There are some drawbacks to the Ship and the reason for 3.5 star rating: the bathrooms are too small and in need of updating. The pool table is not 100% level, cues are iffy. The decor is eclectic vintage, which I like, but seems cluttered. For a place called the Ship, there is not much ship-like about the decor. Still, despite a few downsides, the Ship is near the top of my list of favorite bars. Come have some fun in Multnomah Village.
google avatar

Desi S.

Yelp
Well, I'm not sure what to say. The bartender is awesome. Forgot her name but really great and attentive. The ambiance is horrible. It can't figure out if it's a dive bar, sports bar or neighborhood bar. I can not stand the crowd that comes with the video game where you shoot deer. However, the bartender alone is enough to come back. Eat before you go and don't expect too much. When the other bars in the neighborhood are busy, you can get a good drink!
google avatar

Jarrett R.

Yelp
Cheap beers and friendly service what else could you ask for I love the dive bars the best not to mention all the nice tvs everywhere it's a grown folks chucky cheese I had a meet ball sandwich here the other day that was amazing
