Fast-Casual Cava Adds La Jolla To Its Growing Area Expansion Plans | Eater San Diego

"It's a sprawling outdoor center at 8800 Villa La Jolla Drive that houses tenants such as Snooze, Sprinkles, Nékter Juice Bar, and Philz Coffee, and will add a Cava to its dining lineup this fall." - Tierney Plumb

The Shops at La Jolla are wonderful! First of all it is right across the street from the trolley stop for Nobel drive in La Jolla and it is so very easy to get there from the Blue Line or from any of the trolley lines ... you just get to the Blue Line & it goes straight to Nobel Drive Station and you can shop at plenty of places. There are small boutique shops, specialty shops like Sephora, fun shopping like Nordstrom Rack, practical shopping like Whole Foods and CVS, FedEx Office, banks and more! The dining options are fantastic .. with one of my favorite places ... The Melt ... staying open until 2a.m. for those late night cravings for delicious delights. Also, there are plenty of places in between shops where you can just sit and do your own thing ... read a book, text friends, listen to music (headphones of course), eat a snack that you brought with you or bought there, or just kick back and relax Definitely go and explore the whole area of the shopping mall, it will be a treat to visit!

Nordstrom rack has every single thing you need!!

This is the WORST shopping center I’ve ever been too. It is SO poorly designed it’s almost comical. I’m shocked it ever got approved. The parking lot is absolutely horrendous and you’ll get stuck in one parking lane for 30 minutes with no where to escape. Now add in the modern day idiot behind the wheel and you’re bound to want to bang your head in the windshield. I would rather drive 30 minutes to the next closest Whole Foods than ever step foot here again

Google
There are a variety of stores to include places to get grocery items, clothing, housewares, and electronics. There are multiple selections for food also. Dining options include Chipotle, a greek kebab place, a place to get poke, and a Crumbl cookie store. The AMC theater is an all recliner theater. The common areas are well kept and there is lots of parking available.

Love coming here because they have very good restaurants n groceries store (whole foods) here.

Google
Just about anything you need you can find here. Good restaurants, a fantastic grocery store, coffee and wine shops, clothing stores and a really solid pet store. Do yourself a favor and spend an afternoon here. Just note: parking can sometimes be a bit of a wank.

Google
Nice shopping center with good restaurants and shops! It can be crowded and takes some time to get in or out of the parking but it is okay! I wish there was a water fountain somewhere and more trash cans! The CVS and the Wholefoods stores make a perfect combination for shopping.

Google
Convenient to the 5 on the way back north from Padres games! Lovely and clean shopping center. Traffic always heavy in parking lot. If we got there earlier we would check out something besides Whole Foods!

Yelp
The area is so pretty and fun to explore. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a great shopping experience in San Diego!

Yelp
Visited here to get some items for my brother who is now attending UCSD. We love all the stuff in this plaza and think it's wonderful that it's conveniently located near UCSD.

Yelp
My wife and I are massive fans of this coffee chain. However, today made me realize that not all locations are created equal. I ordered an Oatmeal cookie cold brew, which I've had countless times, along with a bacon and egg burrito that I was trying for the first and final time. The cold brew tasted like warm cinnamon water while the burrito's tortilla was hard as rock. My wife excitedly ordered her usual iced mint mojito only to be surprised by what tasted like warm water with 2 mint leaves floating on top. We ordered other items such as coffee beans and a butter croissant to go along with the coffee. Luckily it's hard to mess up pre packaged beans and a croissant so no complaints there. The place was decently busy with people waiting, but nothing we haven't dealt with at other locations without issue. Our order was for pickup so we didn't try our drinks until after we'd left the coffee shop or we would have said something. Maybe we are odd balls, but we would 1000% rather wait 20 mins for good coffee than wait 5 for warm sugar water. Either management needs to do better training their baristas or they need to find a different job. Safe yourself the time and money and go to a different location or even a different coffee shop because this one was absolutely atrocious.

Yelp
Let me start this review by saying that I have lived in the apartments above this plaza for 3 years now, due to attending UCSD. For 3 years, I've had the liberty of watching what goes on in this shopping plaza at all hours of the day and all 365 days of the year. As the other reviews have said, the parking lot situation is actually insane. I'm not sure how the lot looked prior to its redesign in ~2016(?), but the guy who designed this new lot deserves to be fired and stripped of his creative ability forever. For 3 years, I've witnessed this plaza's traffic at all hours of the day. I'm so serious when I say this, the only time this plaza is even remotely close to quiet is 2am, when The Melt closes. But even at 2am, there are sometimes really loud students making noises outside and not leaving. With the construction happening on Villa La Jolla Dr, this plaza is even more of an absolute pain in the ass to enter and exit. I really don't understand the appeal of this plaza, I really wish it was quieter but I guess all the good shops are centralized here. Security is also a huge issue in this plaza as of recent. When I first moved in, security was nice and lax enough to the point of it not being lazy but also not super crazy. Then, security became super strict and they would even give out parking warnings because parking passes weren't displayed straight or they would give out warnings for my friend's vehicles that were in the lot while they were in my apartment. And now, security is doing next to nothing, which leads to RVs frequently being parked in the lot for multiple nights and homeless sleeping on the steps up to the apartments. It seems like they also have stopped caring about parking passes for residents, and I have noticed people leaving their cars parked overnight at the charging stations, which usually is not allowed and would lead to parking violation tickets. It's super disappointing to see the downfall of the safety of this plaza but I'm not sure if anybody would even address these issues as this plaza is owned by a massive company and it doesn't even seem like they care about listening to feedback. Super disappointing. Building apartments on top of the shops was a bad idea.

Yelp
I will mention only that the parking is awful. All the reviews are saying the same thing from 2016 when they restructured this place and made the parking lot more clusterfuck. I am curious to know who the genius that designed this parking lot is. If you cannot provide parking spaces for all the store customers, then build a parking building... As this place was reconstructed so many times and changed so many times by developers, I am waiting for the next one to take seriously the parking spaces.

Yelp
I remember going to this outdoor mall when I moved to San Diego long ago. Had not been for at least 10 years and found that there has been good remodeling, new stores and overall modernization. I find it kind of crowded on the parking aspect with cars constantly coming in/out and that can be a bit stressful. My favorite and recommended stores are the Whole Foods and Nordstrom Rack.

Yelp
i absolutely love LaJolla Village. I have visited and spent some amount of time there. First LaJolla is beautiful ( and expensive) easy to navigate . To the areas credit many of the smaller boutique shops are unique ( carrying lovely & slightly different merchandise) while there are also those stores that we all know that service a community of residents . LoJolla is stunning with an at home feeling even if you're visiting. I have visited many small towns up the coast and although very nice .. LoJolla stands out to me.

Yelp
We come here often for BJs and Whole Foods . They redid the parking lot by Whole Foods some time ago and that caused havoc and chaos for us poor customers trying to find parking spaces during construction . You'd think the parking would be better now but it's not . Lunch is the worst time to visit as it's nearly impossible to find a spot . It's been amazing seeing new vendors here . Mendocino farms , Nordstrom rack , Phil's coffee all have been fun to try . But goodness gracious - the parking :(

Yelp
I've been going to this shopping center for more than 25 years and have seen it go through quite a few changes. But the one thing that never changes (if anything, has gotten worse) is the completely inadequate amount of parking. It does have two entrances/exits so access isn't a problem, but just about any time of day, you are going to find yourself driving around in circles looking for a place to park. People driving behind people hoping they are leaving, angry drivers cutting people off for a parking space... I can't think of a single business at this shopping center I wouldn't rather drive somewhere else to go to. I happened to be here to go to CVS and figured if I didn't find a space relatively soon, rather than drive around and around, I would just find another. But I got lucky and a driver pulled out after my fifth time circling the parking lot. This center is like so many others, they try to fit in so much and often, at the expense of parking. Over the decades I've been coming here, people just tolerate it but these days, it just isn't worth the aggravation. There are some good businesses here, but many of them are located elsewhere in San Diego County without all the stress that comes with the parking here.

Yelp
Beautiful outdoor designer mall with great stores and good food options. Highly recommend

Yelp
Much has been razed here at "The Shops" at La Jolla Village. Gone are TGIF, BJ's, and the other Villa La Jolla movie theater. You still have Whole Foods, Peet's, and The Flame Broiler however. A new Nordstrom Rack will be built next year(2016). - They actually have apartments built into this shopping center. Seriously? Who wants to live in a shopping center? - This was one of worst places to park in University City. Now you'll have to go to La Jolla Village Square across the street to get that level of parking frustration.

Yelp
Well First I come here for the cool Types of Stores they have here . First the TGI Friday's , then the Whole Foods Grocery Store And Of Course the Nordstrom Rack here . This is just to name a few but they just got this cool place to eat here which is called the Melt . Which is a must try !! Plus the parking here can get a little Crazy when busy !! It's across the street from California Pizza Kitchen In La Jolla . And just across the street there are some other good places to eat also !! I find it kind of crowded because lots of Students from UCSD come here also plus across the street there are apartments and those people come here also so it does get crowded here . It's a cool shopping center but the thing that bother me was just the parking but just be patient and you will find a spot !! Overall I can find myself coming back because of the places like Whole Foods and the Melt !!

Yelp
This is my go-to shopping center in the area. CVS being open 24 hours is very convenient, whether you needs meds to combat whatever ails you or just need to pick up toothpaste. If you know what you need it's much easier to get in and out of than Ralph's across the street. Other attractions include Peet's Coffee (also good teas!), Rubio's, Flame Broiler, Bank of America, Blockbuster, and the Landmark Theatres (plays all the indie films). There's even a secret post office no one knows about behind CVS (drive around the back of the parking lot). I'm not going to lie. Parking is sometimes a challenge in this shopping center but not nearly as bad as the previous reviewer makes it out to be. Just plan for an extra 5-8 minutes for parking or plan to walk a bit further and you'll be fine.

Yelp
Very nicely designed outdoor mall with virtually every store you can imagine and some stores that I never heard off yet they look cool. Lots of dining options as well including Lemonade. Live music on the weekends, indoor free parking and what appears to be a bark park.

Yelp
Even La Jolla needs to have a strip mall, and The Shops certainly fit that description. I usually come out here when I head out to Friday's, but afterwards I take the time to walk around and check out the area. As this is in La Jolla, there are some shops that cater to the moneyed folks. However, some of the other restaurants look inviting (such as BJs Pizza and The Broiler), and of course, Landmark Cinemas is present for the indie-loving film crowd. The parking isn't as bad as one of the reviewers said it was - I've never had problems parking here, and in fact it's actually easier to park here than it is at the Trader Joe's area across the street.

Yelp
Cute, quaint and a reasonable neighborly selection of shops. At least on a sleepy Monday evening with ongoing rainy mist. Would The Shops look as lovely during a Saturday crunch? I dunno. But I liked the TJs; the fact the movie theatre is there; that's there's a handful of other places to pop into for food, cosmetics and the like. Not in my 'hood at all, but while here, it was fun to poke around and see what's doing. I ended up liking my time at The Shops, and would enjoy another trip sometime in the future.

Yelp
Lovely outdoor shopping venue. Currently (6/10/17) undergoing renovation and the new addition looks like it will be really nice when completed. The parking looks like it could be a challenge but we lucked up and found excellent parking spot. The stores are most definitely more high end. I was extremely disappointed with Macy's and Nordstrom selection of items. This shopping venue caters to a very specific clientele and appears to lack diversity. There were lots of places to grab a bite to eat, plenty of fountains for kids to stick there fingers in and lots of spots to get coffee!! I am only giving this place 3 stars because I was disappointed in the lack of diverse shopping options. I suppose that's to be expected in La Jolla.

Yelp
Just an update on this center. The construction is not yet complete so there are still a few shops that aren't in yet. What is there, and open, is the Nordstrom's Rack, BJ's, a new sandwich place (sorry, I don't recall the name right now). BJ's and the sandwich place are located in the corner where Friday's used to be. And they've opened a Verizon store there, also. Over in the main area, a juice bar is opening soon; the signs are up but nobody's home yet. Oh, and the parking lot has been totally redone and, in my opinion, is much better than it was.

Yelp
How can I "like" a shopping center when every visit starts with a long hunt for that elusive open parking space? This is a real shame...new shops & restaurants but the owners didn't invest in parking. A simple 3-story garage would have turned this into a real destination. As it stands now, I only go there when I have to check our box at the post office. I wish the Post Office would move to a new location with parking so I wouldn't have to deal with this mall anymore. The other mall just south of here (with AMC Theaters, Ralphs, UC Cyclery) has MUCH more parking, so that's where we go.
google avatar

Katherine S.

Yelp
This parking lot has to be the worst thing ever to be invented. However, the shops here are useful (CVS, Pet People, Rubios, TGI Fridays, Fex Ex, Whole Foods, Radio Shack, Sprinkles, some dry cleaning place, etc). There are also lots of ATMs, which is nice. I recommend parking right near the entrance to avoid the disaster that comes if you try to park close to whole foods or CVS. Seriously, don't even try--you will hate your life.

Yelp
I'm a fan for the following reasons: -ARC light theater -Dinner dates in the Food Court watching people ice-skate. Especially the middle aged show offs. Seriously, the best people watching I've found in SD. #FreeEntertainment P.S. Watch your back in the Parking Lots here. Seriously, people! What's the rush?!?!?!
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
holy crap, this parking lot goes from zero to clusterf**k in less than 3 seconds. as in, you enter the shopping center, and are engulfed in a parking disaster in less than the aforementioned time. case in point, i thought i could stop in to cvs before hitting the road out to LA for some water and possibly an energy drink, but after being stuck in the parking lot for about 15 minutes (half of that time was me aborting the mission and trying to get out), i realized the madness that ensues here. i mean, people were going the wrong way in one way parking isles, one chick even ditched her car in the middle of the road to run in and pick up her friggin cupcakes, which was an issue exacerbated by really old folks not knowing how to drive around the car. i sat in my car in serious disbelief for several moments before i regained my inner zen. it's actually a new revelation for me, even with the whole foods in this shopping center being my primary source of food, mostly because i tend to do my shopping at night (when the clusterf**k subsides). i'm still inclined to give a better than poor rating, simply because i live off one of the shops and depend on another for daily knicknacks. otherwise, the fact that this place is impassable during the daylight hours makes this place suck pretty hard.

Yelp
Horrible parking and planning. But I love having a whole foods, peet's, sprinkles and movie theatre all together.
google avatar

Yelp
Avoid! This shopping center has some useful stores and services: a bank, a CVS, a Whole Foods, a Peets Coffee, and others. However, the parking lot and just attempting to navigate in and out of it is a complete nightmare. Even if you don't mind parking far away from the business at which you intend to shop or consume, you'll spend far too much time being stuck in the clusterfuck behind indecisive drivers, people waiting for a parking space, and other morons. The sheer nightmare of just entering the lot and trying to enter one aisle of parking without a long wait or having to deal with someone stopped in the middle of the road made me completely change my mind and decide to leave. But then, I had another long wait ahead of me as I attempted to exit the parking lot. My failed attempt to run one simple five minute errand here and my desire to punch someone in the nuts the entire time I was in my car in this shopping center reminded me why I hate the UTC area so much, and why I moved away from it so many years ago.

Yelp
I have 2 stars for only one reason... parking is awful... Everything else is really great. Really beautiful and clean.

Eric N.

Yelp
Overall this mall is becoming a much nicer place after the renovation. I love the sparkling new stores! Miss the landmark movie theater though.
