Thai Town Restaurant Fined $500K For Paying Employees Only $4 an Hour - Eater LA

"This week, California’s Labor Commissioner’s Office fined the owners of a Thai Town restaurant more than $500,000 for violating labor laws, after paying workers only $4 per hour. The employees at The Shrimp Lover on Hollywood Boulevard were paid well under minimum wage, were not paid overtime, and were forced to work off the clock, in addition to being denied rest or meal breaks." - Mona Holmes

Overall, my family and I had a good time here. The portions are large, and most of us ordered the fish and chips and leftovers. My favorite thing was the Cajun fries. The spice blend combined with their frying method made for a crunchy exterior with a soft interior that didn't need additional sauces. The fish was good and also fried well. Our server was great and quick to help.

Google
This is one of LA’s hidden gems! They give you a bib and it’s a feat to get your hands into the food…literally! Pick any of the seafood bucket options with the medium mixed spice - absolutely delectable! Can’t recommend this enough!

Google
Yes & Yes the BEST flavor bomb, full of delicious Cajun Seasoning Seafood Bag we come across so far. We recommend: 1. Shrimp, 1 Lobster Tail, 2 Dungeness Crab, potatoes & corn with Mild Garlic Butter Sauce in 1 Bag. 2. Shrimp, Crawfish, 2 Dungeness Crab, potatoes & corn with Mild Garlic Butter Sauce in 1 Bag. 3. 3 Side's of Garlic Butter Sauces to dip Seafood in. We 1st discover this spot 10 years ago & returned back to the exact same spot again. The workers were so friendly & kept our drinks (Coke, Raspberry Tea & 2 Waters) filled. They provided paper plates, plastic forks, crab cracker & bibs. Our order didn't take long to get to us. We got so much Seafood in 1 bag it was Seafood Heaven. We each ordered what we wanted & requested our Seafood to be in 1 bag. So we got 2 bags mixed with the Mild Garlic Butter Sauce. It was slightly spicy but we got 3 Garlic Butter Sauce's on the side to tone down the spice by dipping in the Seafood. After we ate they gave us togo cups for our drinks. Between the ladies & men's bathroom there is a station to wash your hands. The bathrooms were clean & accessible. We did our best to capture our experience by pictures & video but it doesn't do justice, so we recommend you try this place out 100%. You won't be disappointed!

Google
Seafood soup was good. It was served with heating under the metal serving bowl, see the picture. The crab had very thin shells without much meat. Lots of work to get out minimum of meat. Atmosphere is kinda wild.

Google
Fresh & yummy mussels & shrimps! I ordered it all in spicy medium.🤤 Customer service is also phenomenal. Called in to order for pick up & got mine in 15 minutes. Will definitely be back! Kudos guys!!! PS, they have $5 menu- the fried rice was definitely the bomb!!!😋😋😋

Google
This restaurant is truly exceptional! What truly sets it apart is Tustin, who works there. He always greets guests with a warm smile, instantly making you feel welcome. His genuine respect for everyone adds to the inviting atmosphere, and his friendly demeanor makes each visit enjoyable. The food is outstanding, bursting with flavor and expertly prepared, paired with service that is unmatched in Hollywood, CA. I highly recommend this place; you'll have a fantastic experience that will leave you utterly satisfied and eager to return

Google
One of the best little restaurants in east Hollywood for sure! The peeled shrimp pot with garlic butter and potatoes and corn is sooo delicious I love how they have $4 beers and the servers are all very nice! There’s indoor and outdoor seating, and the ambiance is so chill Stickers on the walls, cool lights everywhere Def a fun place to go to munch out!

Google
No wait for lunch on Sunday. Good seafood although the combos and seafood by the pound is preferable to the fried options. Nice selection of sauces to go with the seafood although I’m not sure there was much of a difference in flavors.

Yelp
This place was absolutely amazing and everything was also at a reasonable price as well! The ambiance/aesthetic was very cute; the place was a bit small but cozy yet had spacious outside seating. It gave the appearance of a bar and a restaurant. My friend and I went there for Galentine's Day and had such a time! Our waiter was very kind and informative about our food options as well! We both got the bucket with some appetizers and sides! Don't forget to grab some of the frozen macarons on your way out; they're the PERFECT munchie snacks for when you're stuck in traffic!

Yelp
It's a small place, but cozy. Bar atmosphere, but only beer and wine on the menu. We ordered 2 pounds of boiled shrimp, Cajun seasoning and spicy for the level, the chef fried shrimp, and beef chow mein. The boiled shrimp, we're not really seasoned and not spicy at all. The chef fried shrimp were really good, but I don't like that they up-charge if you get them without the peel. Because of the "sauce" they do become soggy quickly. The beef chow mein was disgusting, and it had an awful smell to it. I couldn't eat it. If I were to go back, it would solely be because of the chef fried shrimp. I would try them with the peel on though, to see if that changes how soggy it gets. I was disappointed that they didn't inquire about the uneaten chow mein. Considering I didn't eat it, and I turned down a box you would've thought they would've been interested in why. They weren't.

Yelp
IMHO flavors are wayyyy better than Boiling Crab. I believe that the garlic purée they use is better than whole clove. You definitely get vibes of Boiling crab in terms of decoration, but it feels more homey for some reason. With a party of 3, we shared a fried calamari basket and the big combo, and we were pretty satisfied without feeling too full. Everything was a hit and i will definitely be back for more. Only problem is parking. This is going to test your patiences. They have a small lot and parking on the street can be atrocious, but don't let that dictate how you judge the taste and service.

Yelp
Last Saturday, my husband and I went to see a friend in a Stand Up in Thsi Town. We had 40 minutes to eat. We found this place close to the theater. We thought how is cool the vibe of restaurant, shrimp lovers as well. The service was fast , great and friendly service, and the food was delicious! The fries were amazing! The portion is good for two and cheap! They have thsi plates as well. Go to have fun with friends!
google avatar

Shirley Z.

Yelp
Best bang for your buck! We got 1lb of shrimp which comes with potatoes, added corn and sausage for around $25. Service was great and food came out fast. There's only a small parking lot in front, so most likely you may have to find street parking.
google avatar

Meagan W.

Yelp
Parking: tiny lot but there is street parking. Seating: outdoor seating on the patio or inside seating, they can push tables together to make a larger table. Service: the waiters are super nice and helpful! Food: the food was absolutely delicious, it is a Thai restaurant so it's their own Thai twist to everything which makes it super good. The sauce is good and they have Thai dipping sauce on the side which is a sweet sour a little spice dipping green sauce. Great place!

Yelp
Absolutely one of my favorite things to come past be on the bucket list if you haven't tried it. Love the Thai tea ,shrimp Bucky with a hint of sausage and potatoes Yum Yum. The service is always great and it's very laid-back which I like a lot. It's a fun trendy place.
google avatar

Zoey G.

Yelp
It was so much better than expected. We got shrimp that comes with potatoes, sausage and corn with the original Cajun, hot! Staff were nice and attentive.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place. Great environment. Excellent service very clean. Foods is served fast so no long wait to eat. I love hollywood
google avatar

Yelp
This is a must-try if you love Boiling Crab and Thai food!! It's the combination I didn't know I needed. Truly flavorful "Medley" sauce with Thai flair. The Cajun Fries are SO GOOD - crispy and fresh! However I would not order the Drunken Noodles again - very dry and bland. I poured the Medley sauce from the shrimp over it, which made it better so I'll keep the 5 stars lol. Place is cute with cozy outdoor seating, string lights, customer graffiti, and fisherman decor. Service was great - very friendly and fast service. We came on a Tuesday night and I recommend coming on a weekday because I can imagine it being packed on a weekend! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
very delicious food , nice place . So amazing girl who works there . I really recommend this restaurant . They made my birthday
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
Best tasting seafood boil in LA in terms of Flavor. Easily, i don't place around, just trust me on this. Been going to this place for close to ten years. Gone here for family gatherings, birthday parties, casual dinners, but never on a date. You must really be comfortable around eachother if you go here on a date. Anyways........ My records is 5lbs of shrimp between me and 2 buds. My go it has always been shrimp in the medley sauce (medium or hot) add corn. Eat it with a bowl of rice, scoop the sauce into the rice, and start peeling them jawns. PRO TIP!!!!! Peel about few shrimp at once, lay the meat over the rice and pour the sauce over it. It's the most optimal way, flavor wise and efficiency. Don't sleep on the GARLIC BREAD & CAJUN FRIES
google avatar

Kaitlin D.

Yelp
We got a few pounds of the shrimp. Got the mixed sauce and tried multiple spice levels. Hot was our favorite!! Service was easy and fast! Did take out and everything was bagged well!!

Yelp
I sampled this restaurant's "Fried Ocean" dish, which consisted of 2x Fried Fish, 4x Fried Oysters, 4x Fried Shrimp, and Calamari with Cajun Fries. It was quite the satisfying and filling dish. I also enjoyed the restaurant's high-quality Garlic Bread and Thai Tea. Our server was conspicuously polite and humble, but you'll need to get his attention if you need anything after your dishes are delivered to your table. During my recent visit, I observed a sign at the front counter that appeared to state (or at least imply) that a vaccine card is (theoretically) required to dine in. Parking in the adjacent lot appears to be rather limited in availability. Both restrooms are gender-neutral. While I certainly appreciate the progressive direction of that business decision, a more stringent maintenance regimen for said restrooms would be even better (hint, hint).

Yelp
Shrimp lover was my place to come to for shrimp. When we got here at 9:09am we were greeted by a skinny young guy with a pouting face because we had just entered the facility. We've been here past 9pm and they've always taken us (it's the other guy) but this time it was different, they turned us away and told us they are closing early. Since when are you able to just turn paying customers away? Maybe because their supervisor or management was not there. We've recommended this place many times, but not no more. Don't post your hours till 9:30pm and want to close early, just because.
google avatar

Kendrick L.

Yelp
Love coming here and getting my fingers dirty. It's consistent and delicious. Definitely get the Cajun fries and garlic toast.
google avatar

Khadijah R.

Yelp
My favorite boil place here ! Food is always fresh and there is a variety of fish in a boil without costing an arm and leg
google avatar

Julissa L.

Yelp
The bomb !!! Thank you for offering peeled shrimp for the boil the medley sauce is a perfect combination. Good amount of potato's. I ordered online and was ready for pick up within 20 min during dinner hours so super fast service. My go to place for shrimp boils.
google avatar

CJ C.

Yelp
The crabs aren't worth the price. Most of the crab legs ($30 a pound) were missing legs and had very little meat. The one pound of shrimp we got was had barely any sauce, but tasted good when you dip it in. The service took almost 20 mins for our food when we were the only ones there compared to while we were eating the two families that came after us got their food after 5 minutes of ordering. The staff didn't really pay mind to us. But the butter sauce was good!
google avatar

Jeremy B.

Yelp
I wouldn't go back here. Crab had funny fishy smell and not much flavor in the sauce. Just oily sauce. The only thing here for me that was good were the lemon pepper fries. That was it. I went to an Asian buffet a few days later and got all you can eat crab with just regular butter and it tasted way better than this bland fishy place. 1 star deserved.
google avatar

Arpie D.

Yelp
Not my favorite spot. In my opinion garlic was overboard. Other than that the flavors were ok, but wouldn't recommend or go back again. Service was good in the beginning, but towards the end we sat around waiting to pay. To the point of meeting the host in front to pay so we can leave.

Christina P.

Yelp
I went in Friday 08/23 with a friend and we split oysters and a crawfish combo. We went to our separate households and both got insanely sick with food poisoning at the same time 24 hours after. It was definitely this restaurant. I've never been so sick (so gnarly) and crazy we paid $85 for the pain, no refund, no real resolution. I would stay far far away...

John M.

Yelp
Classic hole-in-the-wall on Hollywood Blvd. Loved the food, but MSG hit me very hard. If you're MSG intolerant as I am, be careful!
google avatar

Gina L.

Yelp
Awesome. I good the lobster tail with garlic sauce. It was so good and everything is actually good!!!

Kelci H.

Yelp
I got the peeled shrimp bag with the medley sauce and added sausage and corn , potatoes and a boiled egg. Shrimp tasted fresh and delicious!
google avatar

Samantha Z.

Yelp
Delicious place with great deals!! But the reason I am taking off a star is because they charge $1.50 for water and I do find this reprehensible. But they have such good beer deals, I will just bring my own water bottles next time I come! They have $4 modelo drafts all day, $18 & $22 beer bucket specials! This alone is worth coming, but they food is just great, it reminds me when I was a little girl when my parents would take me to the docks and we would have real seafood! The outside patio is medium Small and decorated with very cute lights, it is 5:20 pm on a wed and 3 out of 5 tables are full so definitely recommend calling before you come to see if theres a wait! Today I had the grilled salmon with a side of fried rice and broccoli for 13.99 and 10/10 would totally recommend! Also the service is spectacular! My waitress is so on point and is making sure I have everything I need and my glass is kept full, if only they didn't charge for water it would be 5 stars for sure!!!
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
We ordered food through uber-eat during COVID-19 pandemic to support local bussiness. We pick this place since they are smaller restaurant (not part of chain!) We had shrimp, king crab legs, clams with medium spicy medley sauces, 1 side order of sweet potatoe, garlic breads. The sauce is spicy and tasty as Boiling crabs chain and Boat House in Monterey park. However, the shrimp, kingceab and clams are slightly smaller size. Pricewise, they are a bit higher than Boiling crabs. 1lb of shrimp with 2 corns, a few potatoes is about $15, king crab legs $40, clams $15. Everything is fresh and tasty though. Overall, it is pretty good alternative for Boiling crabs, Boat house.

Bing G.

Yelp
I like their boiling shrimp it isnt soggy unlike other restaurant and their flavored sauce is great!
google avatar

Lance T.

Yelp
Okay. I had tried this kind of concept from The Boat House and I have to say that Shrimp Lover is way better! It's all about the sauce y'all! And Shrimp Lover is keeping their A-game. Love the tasty cajun fries. Coconut juice is a bomb! Refreshing and just about right after having all those seafoods. Nice place to hang out with friends when you opt for a messy-fun-good laugh kind of time.
google avatar

Rochell D.

Yelp
Surprised and delighted by this place. I went with a group of 6 to enjoy some yummy and messy seafood. Called ahead about 10-15mins to let them know we were coming and they set up a table just for us. For a small party like us I didn't think we'd need to reserve a table, I'd never been there before calling, and when I did get there so happy to have called, it's a little small. Prices are listed on the chalkboard for market price items. We definitely missed that when we first got there and as we were waiting for our food I saw it on the wall. Funny enough when we asked the server the market prices she didn't even point us to the wall which is interesting. The food was pretty good. About the same as other smaller chain crab joints which I prefer over the typical boiling crab. Flavor for the butter only was ok. I don't love spicy so I prefer not to get cajun, but my friends who did get cajun, liked the flavors a lot. My most memorable moment, was the server running out to us after we had just paid to give me my reusable straw. What a kind soul. He could've easily thrown it out but instead he pulled it from my cup using a napkin and then ran it out to us in the parking lot. I couldn't be more thankful as I just got that straw. We'll definitely go back not only because it's local to me and my friends but with the service, they won our loyalty.
google avatar

Regine S.

Yelp
This place serve shrimp in their own shel, in a bucket, and in a bag with the sauce of your choice; It's only $13.99 a pound! It's very tasty and reasonably priced. This restaurant has been there for a long time and has another location. There's a variety of seafood to choose from. I highly recommend this place in the heart of Hollywood!
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
Really love this place!!! Very welcoming and friendly workers Serving excellent tasty food Ranging from crab and shell fish to Excellent fish & chip Excellent Cajun fries, fried rice, pad Thai And best of all a fantastic elevated view of the ocean and the redondo pier including great sunset views! Plenty of parking and then stroll around the king harbor pier after dinner! Important - bring cash as they don't accept credit cards It's well worth it
google avatar

Nigel A.

Yelp
I just picked up my order and dang I'm really disappointed. They used to have a really good seafood cuisine but now the quality is not really good. The seafood taste like really old and mushy, I can't even finish it. Wasted my 50$ that I paid for!
google avatar

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Great service and good food. If you're a fan of shrimp Cajun then this place is a good start. They sell by the pound and offer all the usual add one like sausage or corn and potato.

Latoya C.

Yelp
Found a spider in my snow crab legs food is normally good but that just turned my stomach and feelings about the establishment
google avatar

Juls E.

Yelp
I ordered from here late at night and I felt the shrimp tasting funny but I thought it was because I chose the "peeled off kind" so I thought I'll keep eating it since I bought it already... Well this morning I woke up extremely sick and that's literally the only thing I ate yesterday with a protein shake and avocado toast. I've ate from the one in redondo beach before and let me tell you they should not have their shrimp travel to Los Ángeles because it's apparent they don't know what they're doing at this one .
google avatar

Ebony P.

Yelp
Wow this place really surprised me, i took my friend out last night for her 35th Birthday and from the start this place really was great. The atmosphere, the service and food was very well. We ordered the seafood combo and mini combo, i must say the taste was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, if you love Seafood with tasty flavors try this spot, this maybe my new fav seafood place!

Jo Anna L.

Yelp
Are used to enjoy coming to this place so much I love the food the customer service was great now I can tell you That their customer service sucks specially because of one guy I think he's name is Ronnie his attitude and Customerservice are the worst I have ever seen in my entire life I feel like this guy does not want to work there I feel that his attitude belongs in the trash I'm not at the server you ask him for something he gives you attitude everything that you ask him he says no literally got upset because I said I did not want to fish in my food my husband has allergies but he seem not to care ! If they keep this guy soon they will end up with no customers!! ... if anyone else has or is going to this place plz let me know how it goes with this guy lol ..

Yelp
Had an awesome time here at The Shrimp Lover with my Bros, the food was nicely done! The shrimp and mussels were nice and fresh, the king crab legs was perfectly cooked - all were nicely seasoned and just right. We ordered a side of Fried Rice with crab and Pad Thai, needless to say, it was a very filling evening enjoyed with great friends and good food. I will absolutely come back here, the staff was very nice and attentive, service was quick and they have parking!
google avatar

Chad B.

Yelp
Wife absolutely loves this place. Excellent food and nice sized portions for the cost. Happy hour beer prices are some of the lowest in the area! We will be frequent visitors of this place for years to come!
google avatar

Cesar H.

Yelp
The portion for this place is so little for the price. Does this look like 1lbs of shrimp to you like 15 pieces of shrimp? 2 bags of this is about $50 seriously ? just go to boiling crab. avoid this place. Responding to reply: Weighting after putting the extras in there ? Literally only had 15 pieces of tiny shrimp in there. 2 Lbs of shrimp plus little pieces of sausage 2 pieces of corn Tons of potatoes ive never asked for 1 side of Fries $48.10 plus tip $52.10 It wasnt a satisfying lunch and it was a disappointing that I had to order again from Boiling Crab instead. Rip off place. Boiling crabs gives you more.
google avatar

Yvonne Z.

Yelp
Excellent food! The flavors are so rich and delicious. This is our go to place for seafood. Spice is just right. Friendly and efficient service and staff We always enjoy ourselves when we visit.

Yelp
Went for happy hour to take advantage of done discounted seafood. Happy hour is from 1-5 and offers a range of discounted items. My boyfriend got the wings (5) and 1/2Cajun fries for $7.99 and I got the 1/2 seafood Combo (mussels, shrimp, and clams) which came with a side salad (with some sort of mayo dijon dressing), rice, and a soda for $12.99. Additionally, I ordered corn on the side for $.99. My boyfriend commented that the wings were just regular party wings, but was impressed with the Cajun Fries. My order was tasty as well, outside of the nasty salad dressing. Other than the food, the restaurant was clean, the staff was pleasant, and the food was fast. If you're in the area during happy hour and can find parking-- go for it.
google avatar

Eddie V.

Yelp
Stopped here on a bike ride during ciclivia and was pleasantly surprised. Had shrimp and beer on outdoor patio. Shrimp were great and beer was cold and cheap.
google avatar

Ricky F.

Yelp
I have no complaints about this place whatsoever! The server was so nice and sweet ! I ordered the Cajun Rice with Shrimp. Everything was so well prepared, the seasoning and texture of the rice was perfect. The shrimps were fresh and they were not stingy with them . It really felt like a New Orleans dish, and i've been there trust me! This is definitely a hidden gem for me. First time here visiting and it won't be my last! Thank you for my first meal off of my flight . Thank you!
google avatar

Keila N.

Yelp
I don't know. There's graffiti everywhere even in the bathroom. I'm not sure what kind of look they're going for. My friend and I initially sat outside by the parking lot but it was cold and windy. They moved us into the patio, which was much better. We ordered the medium spicy, which was a bit bland. We should have ordered the fire level. We had the seafood combo for $53+. There were king crab legs, snow crab legs, sausage, corn, potatoes, crawfish, and shrimp. It was pretty reasonable.
google avatar

Regine D.

Yelp
I like coming here because the lines at Boiling Crab are too long to wait through. Every time I've walked in here, I was usually seated immediately. I also like that parking has been easy each time I've been here. For me, The Shrimp Lover comes in to a close second to Boiling Crab. It's the same concept with cajun seafood in a bag with a bunch of seasonings to choose from. What's differentiates this from Boiling crab is that they have other dishes (chicken, pad thai, etc), so if you have a picky eater with you, there's something for everyone! I always order a pound of shrimp with the medley seasoning non spicy along with calamari with fries. The calamari is good but not the best I've ever had. I wish they weren't so stingy to with the sauce they cook the shrimp in. I would definitely come again.
google avatar

Tina V.

Yelp
I was really really missing shrimp boil during isolation but ordering uber eats hit the spot. Y'all really exceeded my expectations. I know the shrimp boil game is pretty competitive in LA but i really didn't think the shrimp would be so juicy and tender! Also i got a thai tea and it was creamy and yummy Also i asked for extra lime and napkins. They sent a ton! Most places don't really read the little notes so i appreciated that. Thanks.
google avatar

Yelp
Rating 10/10! We were seated outside & the weather was a bit chilly but there were heaters so we didn't mind! All employees wore masks & customers had to keep theirs on unless they were at the tables. The staff was very attentive and were nice even though we came closer to the closing time! This place was SO GOOD. I ordered the seafood combo (look up the menu to see what's inside), with all their seasonings (mild), garlic noodles, & Thai tea. Seafood combo: So worth it! I shared it with my boyfriend and it was the perfect amount for us. I believe it's around $50, not bad for two people! The seasonings could be some of the best I've ever had & the spice matched well with mild. I wish I tried the medium spicy, but I wasn't sure how spicy it was really going to be. The food was perfectly cooked & overall was amazing. Garlic noodles: It was good but not the best I've ever had. We wanted to try to eat the seafood with something else other than rice so we went with this, but rice would have been better. Drinks: Their Thai tea was really good, kinda pricy but it's fine. Also, they charge for the water so might as well get something else to drink. Our check came out to be $78 and some change, before the tip. *Disclaimer* The parking was hectic! The plaza they're located in has a VERY SMALL parking lot. We got lucky and found a sport in the next parking lot, but there were spots across the street (a very busy street).
