Los Angeles’s Best Queer Bars Celebrate Pride All Year Long | Eater LA

"It’s hard not to love Long Beach’s longstanding Silver Fox with its spacious, Art Deco style. Go-go dancers adorn tables on weekend nights, and karaoke is an option, as is hanging out on the cozy outdoor patio. Head here if you’re looking for a more nightclub experience, and keep an eye out for weekly events like RuPaul’s Drag Race screenings." - Rebecca Roland

Long Beach’s Decades-Old Queer Bar Scene Makes the City an LGBTQ Haven - Eater LA

"The building facade of The Silver Fox is a special visual treat. From the outside, its art deco design looks like a set from 80s television show Miami Vice, but head inside to find a spacious bar area with karaoke (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays) and a video DJ with go-go dancers on Friday and Saturday nights. They also have a spacious outdoor patio where gay sports leagues often gather after games on weekends." - Isaac Ahn

The Silver Fox – Fun, Flirty, and Full of Energy This place knows how to throw a good night out. The Silver Fox has that laid-back, no-judgment energy that makes it easy to let loose and just enjoy yourself—whether you’re sipping a cocktail or cheering on a hot gogo dancer. 🍸 Drinks: Strong and reasonably priced. The bartenders are super friendly and quick, even when it’s packed. They’ll chat, they’ll joke, and they know how to pour. 🕺 Go-Go Dancers: Let’s be honest—they’re part of the charm. Attractive, high energy, and definitely know how to keep the crowd entertained without making it feel forced. They’re not just eye candy—they know how to work the room. 🎶 Music & Vibe: Great mix of pop, dance, and throwbacks. It’s upbeat without being overwhelming. The lighting is fun but not blinding, and there’s a good mix of people—young, older, regulars, newbies, all vibing together. 👬 Crowd: Friendly, flirty, and diverse. Whether you’re going solo or with friends, it’s easy to strike up a conversation or just vibe in your own corner. Safe space energy all around. 🧼 Cleanliness: Restrooms could use a little more love at peak hours, but otherwise the space is well-kept for a bar that stays busy. It never felt grimy or sketchy. — Final thoughts: The Silver Fox is a staple for a reason. It’s sexy, chill, and never tries too hard. The dancers bring the heat, the bartenders bring the charm, and the crowd brings the fun. Lost one star only because it can get a bit crowded and warm inside, but hey—that’s half the appeal, right?

Google
She cute, exterior reminds me of a movie theater. Great atmosphere, great service, fun crowd and brilliant old school wall phone - just needs to be a rotary dial!

James Reilly

Google
Very diverse and friendly crowd, mostly local. Bartenders and staff pleasant and responsive. This is a lively bar with good music and good energy

Google
Absolutely incredible local gay bar! The bar-back is adorable!

Jonathan

Google
I haven't been here for a very long time so I decided to stop by. Nothing has changed and it is a decent gay barn to enjoy. The service and the cocktails were great.

Shawna Carter

Google
Had a fun time here. Nice patio area out back with plenty of seating.

Michael Morgan

Google
Probably my favorite gay bar in LB! The atmosphere is relaxed and the drinks are strong, strong, strong. The patio is also really nice. Has more of a diverse clientele than the bars in WeHo or even on Broadway. Good prices too

Barry Thomas

Google
Friendly..drinks are cheap. Owner John..super nice

Yelp
Had a great time here. Huge outdoor patio area with ambient lighting. I'd consider this spot to be more of a chill and hang with ur friends vibe. On Tuesdays tho they have a bomb drink special $5 you call ur drink! They also have karaoke on other nights Deff would recommend if ur in the area.

Yelp
A bartender said I had to buy my own drinks; the bar would not allow others to buy them for me. There was no sign stating any such rule. He insisted I immediately purchase another drink for myself, before I finished the drink my friend bought for me. So I chugged it down and left; the bar lost a sale and a customer. Bizarre. Jimmy the doorman is great though.

Yelp
This place has been a staples in Long Beach for many many years. A nice little local neighborhood bar that fun for drinks, light dancing and catching up with friends. Just be cautious with hanging outside and being loud as it's in a residential area. There's street parking as they don't have a parking lot. Depending on what night you visits, they have different events going on. I tend to go during karaoke which I believe happens on two different nights. They also have a nice patio area with plenty of seating and has somewhat of a New Orleans vibe. Pretty cool neighborhood hang out with cheap drinks and good company.

Yelp
No effin *'s the way I was treated by my own peeps after being a client for many many effin years.... Got cut-off only bc I asked them for limes after my friend and I tipped them very well on every round. Trust me this is not the first time staff here get upset at me for asking them for limes, they just effin lazy to cut them limes. Their attitude towards people is the worst, they think their caca don't stink and they only give you good service and smile at you after they see the damn money.

Jenevieve L.

Yelp
Best bar ever, would highly recommend. Danny is ok. Sometimes his attitude gets the best of him. But, he's nice to look at. The rest of the staff is incredible- especially Johnny. He will take care of you with no questions asked. Karaoke on Monday nights are the best thing eve! Here every Monday for it. David is also the best (:

Yelp
Silver Fox may refer to the original owner who was probably in his 50's with an impressive, silvery grey mane of hair. As I recall, he was said to have owned The Pacesetter Shop, a chic gift shop, catering to the carriage trade at the South Coast Plaza so some of the features found at Silver Fox may be due to his "good taste". Enter through a streamlined Art Deco foyer. Bar starts immediately to the right w/ liquor bottles tastfully mounted on gleaming glass shelves properly lighted. To the left are tables & chairs for drinking & viewing the large screen TV which was showing the Oscars to a large, loud crowd, SRO. SF looks & feels like a "gentlemen's" bar for a more mature, perhaps more well established clientele. This is the classiest Gay bar in all of Long Beach if not all of greater LA at least in terms of appearance now that we have entered the dark ages in terms of lack of aesthetics & comfortable space in the first quarter of the 21st century. 3+Yelp stars.

Yelp
I go there every year for the toys for tots toy drive. They usually have a good spread for the dinner but this time whoever thought Indian food was a good idea needs to be removed from the Christmas toys for tots steering committee. Indian food for a holiday meal is not appropriate. Nonetheless, it is a very nice opportunity for the bar to get back to the community and engage our partners like the fire department to carry out this charity.

Yelp
Stopped caring my favorite. Woodford Kentucky straight bouben whiskey. Not cool. Will drink soda I guess.

Yelp
Thank you, John!! Great time, great bartender, great drinks!!! Loved our time at Silver Fox! Thank you, boys for making these lesbians feel welcome!!

Al S.

Yelp
I started going there in the early 90's. Amazing to see John is still there!! Used to be so much more classier in the 90's. Maybe social media has changed everything. Drinks no bargin anymore. I was there for Halloween. Guys were having fun

Stephen M.

Yelp
Sadly I must say it was weak... As a straight man coming out with my multi sexual group of colleagues it was awkward.. First treated with two "bouncers" who have no shame asking if we knew where we were. Us being innocent of the idea, of where we were but knowing of the atmosphere it was uncomfortable.. The drinks were as if I was trying to be drunk for weeks to cum... I want to have fun here cause everyone is amazing! But yeah! Way to strong on the drinks.

Yelp
My gay friend and I love this place always great drinks, friendly Bartenders, cool Djs and ambience pretty nice in general

Frank G.

Yelp
Started coming to this place many years ago , more attitude from the local WeHo reflects. Over priced drinks , bathrooms always a nasty mess, and the staff over rated by recent reviews. Another Covid shut down and this place will be just like Ripples, done.

Yelp
The Silver Fox was the first Gay bar I visited as soon as I was of legal age. Why? It stood out to me. I remember walking past it when I was 18. I always wanted to go in. WELL, I went in! Here's what I had been missing out on all those years: As soon as you pull those glass doors beneath the shiny words SILVER FOX, you enter a totally different world. Totally different time zone too. After one drink here (they're strong!!!) you're not only lost in the music, you lose total track of time. I guess it happens when you're having a good time, right? You'll never catch a seat at the bar. Perhaps on a Monday between 5-7pm, if you're lucky. Majority of the time bar seats are taken and there isn't too much seating out in the lounge area. So feel free to bring a beach or patio chair! (Just kidding, please don't do that) There's a patio out back but unfortunately there's a 'no drinks out in patio' policy. Used as more of a smokers mingle zone. The lounge itself is a quite small with a few tables for pairs of 2, and 2 larger tables big enough for 4-10, but plenty of space to dance if you're feeling brave. There's a projector playing Billboard charts top 100 music videos in the center of the lounge, also on 2 flat screen tvs on opposite corners. I believe the genre of music changes depending on the day of the week. The sound system is terrific, as it's loud enough to get anyone lit even if it's Justin Bieber or The Wiggles, but not excessively loud where you have to shout to have a conversation. The bartenders are marvelous! They are very friendly, engaging, and fast. I've had the pleasure of having my drinks made by Johnathan on several occasions. Even when there's a massive line, he's fast but efficient. Never handing me a drink without ensuring I am pleased with the taste first. He's also turned some shots into drinks for me. He's so personable and wonderful. Every drink I've been handed here has been strong! Ay-O! The bathroom is an unfortunate situation though. Not only is there only one bathroom, it is quite small and reeks of urine. I'd recommend for females to hold it in, or walk up to 7th and Redondo's Starbucks if they're open. Although this is a Gay bar, the crowd ranges. Ultimately, everyone is really friendly and there to have a good time. Gay, Straight, 21, 46... Silver fox is a great bar that provides strong drinks that are adequately priced, a welcoming environment, and a Jell-O shot waiter in a thong after 10 PM.

Yelp
I went to a birthday party this past weekend, the staff is very rude, I would not recommend this place to anyone. The only good thing here were the reasonably priced drinks
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
I was hesitant to check out this bar because I like staying in my bubble, where I live, where I can easily walk to the Brit, Mineshaft, Falcon, and Sweet Water. One evening, after work, my friend invited me to go for 2 for 1 on a Tuesday night and I'm so glad I took him up on his offer because it allowed me to finally try out this long beach institution. Drinks are cheap and strong, the decor is in need of an update in the best way possible, and the bartenders are very nice. My favorite part about this bar is the patio. It's spacious and a little tranquil and that surprised me a lot. I definitely want to check this bar out when it's busy because the few times I've been it was a little slow. The bar being more crowded may influence me to think it's more fun and change this from a 3 star rating to a 4 star rating. Also, I love the the exterior was used for American Crime Story!!!
google avatar

Kristine M.

Yelp
Been going here forever and obeying Covid rules and The door man came up to me but none of the other women standing at the disgusting bathroom without masks on. Only me and said he would kick me out. I choose to spend my next $50 at a straight bar. Liked the bartenders but HORRIBLE SERVICE. If you want to discriminate against straight people, Then do it right. Don't hide behind covid.
google avatar

Yelp
Mixed crowd, neat layout and good stocked bar, patio in the back has new sunshades put up and some seating/tables. Inside has a few bar height tables and stools, a small-mid size open area for dance floor space, and two larger tables that double as go-go-dancer space, complete with stools to sit in also. Carpeting and dim lighting throughout. Video DJ with the MVs shown throughout the inside, music flows through the outside. Friendly staff and food provided on sundays around 3pm, so that's really cool. :) drinks are decently strong but you could, jello shots are sold for local sports/lgbt organizations on the occasion. 2 gender neutral restrooms surround the DJ booth.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
I don't usually frequent gay bars, so I wasn't sure what to expect. My roommate invited me down for his birthday/kickball kick-off party. Surprisingly, I had a really amazing time. Everyone was friendly, dancing, and having a great time. The whole atmosphere was lively and inviting, and it was really infectious. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again. Plus, there's karaoke and, believe me, it's fabulous.

Yelp
Well, just stopped by the Silver Fox. Great place, good drink. John the bartender was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend. Good conversation; nice folks!
google avatar

Neal R.

Yelp
This the gay Cheer"s bar. No place more friendly! Great manager - John Barnes. Expert bartenders who pour really welll....John Paul, Danny, Scott etc. they all do a lot for the community fundraisers, Christmas parties, etc. We have had a number of parties there in which we brought food and the staff provided warmers etc. so you can see I'm totally biased but for good reasons!
google avatar

Gerardo P.

Yelp
By far the best bar that has the kindest, respectful, and safest staff. Outstanding customer service. I'm so glad your guys are open once again!
google avatar

Monya W.

Yelp
An amazing place to sit and relax yes it's a gay dive bar but as a straight couple and older I might add we've never felt more comfortable and accepted thanks to Gonzo Gonzalos what a great bartender. Kind friendly accommodating. We do love seeing him on Tuesday or should I say 2 for Tuesday Happy Hour. Thank U

Yelp
Looking for a night out in between LA and Orange County? This is a great spot. Come with an Open Mind when it comes to hooking up with someone. I just like hanging out at this bar when I need to get away. New Years is a blast here!

Sam B.

Yelp
So I've contemplated writing a review for this bar because times are challenging during a world wide pandemic and businesses are struggling and I'm sure it's been a challenge for the Silver Fox. But I have to say I was so looking forward to coming back to this favorite neighborhood bar, after the closures. I'm a transplant from out of state and when I first came to Long Beach, the Silver Fox was the first Gay bars I came to. Needless, to say - it was just a bad experience ... not so much because of the "new" set up but the fact we were seated outside on their patio. Mind you, it sounds nice - right? A nice lovely patio to have a cocktail with friends and just lose ourselves for a moment during challenging times. Well, to put it bluntly ... the outside patio is disgusting. All around you see dirty walls, dirty $1 dollar plastic tables and chairs, dirty as can be ash trays. I mean their patio is just not the best place to hang out. I get it, they are forced to seat people only outside but the question I have is what the hell have they been doing the whole time the bar has been closed?! You'd think knowing they'd have to sit people outside - they'd at least spruce up the patio to be welcoming to their guest and hec, it'd be a kind gesture to show appreciation to the people that have kept them in business. I was with a group of people and we all had the same feelings about this. It just felt gross. The patio is so bad - is this a reflection of what they think and feel about their patrons?!?! They literally have the same plastic tables and chairs you could probably buy at a discount store - honestly, it wouldn't be so bad if they weren't as gross and dirty as they are - clean them up or how about investing just a little money to show your guests ... Welcome Back. Finances can be tight for bars - I understand that but at least clean up the patio, plant flowers, add some overhead lights. That's all fairly inexpensive. Your customers have been loyal to you how about showing what you think of them.
google avatar

Tamara G.

Yelp
So appreciate and grateful for the longevity of the bar. Love the patio to hang out in the fresh air & have a great cocktail. I appreciate PDA but that patio must ignit lust. There has never been a time I have hung out on the patio, I dont see one, two or three hands down anothers pants front or back. If you've been on the patio, the walls are high so theres no other view. Still I return to this fabulous bar because Im a gay woman & I have a place I can go & relax but sometimes close my eyes.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
Best bar in Long Beach!! Always a fun time. If you want great service, good conversation and cleanliness...come here! On Sunday's there's complimentary food. Lots of fun. Sunday night karaoke gets pretty busy so make sure you're there!
google avatar

Tarita T.

Yelp
This place is A-Ok, but one experience stands out the most and they get 2 stars for it. The bar allows people to bring in outside food. I walk in with a frosty from Wendy's and the bouncer doesn't stop me. However, I walk past the bartender and he tells me I can't bring it in. He gives me a whole speech about bringing in liquids into bars and that they aren't allowed. I would of been OK with that, but what pissed me off was that he allowed my friend with his drink cup to come right on in. I brought in ice cream and my friend had soda. I don't know what the difference between the two is but I was the only one asked to finish it outside. I was not a happy camper. Other than that, they make OK drinks and they do have an interesting music selection. On select days, Sundays and Wednesdays, they do karaoke after 9 pm. Plus, they do sell jello shots for $2. So, bring in cash. However, they are not sold all day/night and maybe only on select nights as well. They do have a smoking section outside in the back with chairs and tables.
google avatar

Mark O.

Yelp
Great place. Great selection of, liquor. A wonderful atmosphere for those that are feeling a little bit more upscale than the rest of their people, and peeps.
google avatar

Raphael M.

Yelp
Everyone tells me this place is packed on a few nights for Karaoke (wednesdays and some other day), but every time I'm there, it's pretty empty. The outside is impresive, suggesting something off the Vegas strip. The inside suggests Chuck E. Cheese. The dissonance is overwhelming. The people here are friendly enough. And the bartenders will serve you a stiff one (drink, that is! ;-) ) A few suggested improvements: Lightiing: I've been to grocery stores with better atmosphere. Dim it down a little, please. Carpets: Yeah yeah yeah, rainbows show your pride. But yeesh!
google avatar

Jacob D.

Yelp
Hadn't been here in a couple of years, and glad they have lowered their prices and brought back "real" happy hour prices!
google avatar

Kara K.

Yelp
Had a great last night in LA stopping in at the Silver Fox! Felix, the bartender, is basically an angelface with a heart of gold. Absolutely loved talking with him and some of the patrons in the bar! Karaoke was great! Come with an open mind and party with furries (they are regulars). Friendly people and fun times all around. Easy street parking.
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
This definitely a mixed crowd. First time i went i was told that this would be a older daddy type bar based solely off of its name but wasnt really true. All the times that ive been here its always been a mixed crowd of gay men young and old. The vibe has always been very laid back and easy going. Drinks are strong and the gogo boys hot. Always a fun time with friends at the silverfox
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
Strong drinks, Fun Karaoke on Sundays. Naked jello shot waiter and a furry wolf that hosts Karaoke, YES.
google avatar

Raf A.

Yelp
This is a great locals gay watering hole in Long Beach. Friendly bartenders, well priced drinks and an ever rotating (seemingly) line up of entertainment and DJs. I've been coming here since 1992! Yes, I'm old but this place doesn't feel old.

Danny R.

Yelp
Rude bartender tonight. Stood at the bar waiting to order a drink and he was on grindr chatting and ignored us for about 3 minutes. He didn't even know about the Liberty Classic event host party on Saturday night and didnt offer us drink specials with our wristbands.
google avatar

Cora H.

Yelp
No. No. No. no. Exponential- NO!!!!!!! If possible- negative stars. This place could have been a decent watering hole- but wtf with this lame ass bartender, Ugh. Bitter. No thanks.
google avatar

Hazel Q.

Yelp
I love me some karaoke, but for some reason karaoke at The Fox doesn't really ring my bell. But, I do enjoy a good happy hour at The Silver Fox. I mean, first of all, drinks are dirt-cheap, and on Tuesdays they are buy one, get one for $.25. You really can't find a better deal than that in all of Long Beach. The bartenders are always quite jolly and friendly. And if you're behind on your pop music, there's no shortage of all the pop music (along with videos) that you've been missing. Like I said, I'm not much for the karaoke nights, but if you are willing to sing you do get a discount on your drinks that night too. Looking for a decent and cheap happy hour though and up for being the odd woman out in a gay bar for an afternoon? Well, then the Fox is your place.

Austin J.

Yelp
This bar is hands down my favorite place in the entire world! The staff, environment, drinks, and clientele are above and beyond! The one bartender, Jean Paul was without question, the best bartender I have ever come across! His personality, skill, and overall kindness is without parallel! I will definitely recommend everyone I know to the silver fox!
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
WTF was I thinking. Strike One: It's in Long Beach "the New Jersey of the West Coast." Strike Two: Videos from 1997. 1987 is nostalgia. 1977 is classic. 1997 is tragic. Strike Three: A clientèle from 1997. See Strike Two. So I don't mind a dive bar. In fact, I LOVE dive bars. But a dive bar with pretensions to be anything other than a dive bar is insufferable. And large screen videos are just such a pretension. And I don't mind neighborhood bars, as long as they're in my neighboorhood. Because the only reason you go to a neighborhood bar is so you can walk home if you're too trashed to drive. But a LONG BEACH neighborhood bar? Double oy. My friend SWORE to me that there would be hot guys here. It was only later that I discovered the last time he was here, he was on his third Manhattan. I was definitely the hottest guy there which is pretty sad considering I'm WAYYY past my prime, but hey, at least I don't smell like formaldehyde and grecian formula. I haven't seen so many pleated Dockers in one place since I mistakenly wandered into the break room of the local Mercury Auto Insurance brokerage. And yeah, the Czech bartender isn't bad looking, but the poor guy literally had his chin in both hands, elbows resting on the bar, with a look on this face that I could see the little cartoon bubble rising from his brain that said "You mean to tell me I left Prague for THIS PLACE." You know it's gotta be bad when I can't even finish my drink before leaving. Oh, and this was at 11pm on a Friday night.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Ok bartenders on Saturday SUCK! I had mentioned it was our first time here and no welcoming or nothing. Then I had to ask for two new glasses for our pitcher and one of the bar tenders was bothered, NOPE ON A SATURDAY AGAIN!
google avatar

Steph H.

Yelp
Ah, the Silver Fox. With its glamours Art Deco facade it looks like it'd be a really fancy joint inside too, but it's not, lol. That said, it doesn't mean it's all shabby or anything inside--it's clean and quite roomy. I've been several times and it's a fun place to hang out. The last time I was there there was quite a dance party in effect! The bartenders are always friendly, and as with most bars in Long Beach, the drinks are stiff. If you need to get yo gay bar on on the corner of Redondo of 4th, this is the place for you :)
