16 Hottest Restaurants in Asheville Right Now, June 2024

"Vegans are rejoicing that Keems and Parker Schultz’s popular food truck the Smokin’ Onion has rolled into a brick-and-mortar home with 36 seats in West Asheville in the same pocket shopping center as Botiwalla and Bad Manners Coffee. The all-day breakfast and lunch menu of plant-based comfort foods includes buttermilk fried “chicken” on a sweet potato waffle, herbed scallion biscuit with oyster mushroom gravy, fried green tomatoes with sweet potato grits, a double-patty smash burger, and hand-cut fries with smoked onions." - Kay West

Google
All my vegan friends kept telling me about this place. Finally got to go there today and it was definitely spot on! Super cozy chill place and the people working there are the nicest people you'll ever meet! I got a Caesar salad with tempeh and avocado with an apple baked dessert trying to keep it on the healthier side... But I'm definitely going to have to go back ASAP to try their Vegan chicken sandwich I think it was, I was in a rush so I didn't really get to get the details. But it sounded like a must try along with a few other things on the menu, I'm definitely going to be back!

I have been to vegan restaurants and events all over the country and this food is up there with the best. The chimichanga was amazing, all the sauces and pickled onion was a perfect combination. I loved the added tostada to add all your beans and stuff on top of. Definitely will be back next time I'm in Ashville.

Google
This place always hits! They always go above & beyond with everything! I travel 40 miles to eat here every month! If you haven't been, give it a try! I recommend EVERYTHING! But the brussels are close to my heart!

Google
One the customer service top tier. All I heard coming up to Ashville was be careful it’s not for us brown people. I get there and the ladies were phenomenal, from greeting to check out. The lady with the pink or purple hair was so adorable, and tiny lady with the pretty face who brought me out my food was sweet as apple pie. The food was sooo goood! The BEST vegan gyro I ever ate. I came on a day they were celebrating something and they had vegan donuts. If I didn’t live two hours away I would go back but I live in High Point. I accidentally took the beep thingy for when your food is ready, I plan to bring it back when I come that way. Moral of my story don’t let other people define your experience race/color was never even a factor and I’m from Kismayo Somalia I was treated human 🙌🏾🥰💙 I love this little gem and I will be back. P.S the prices to me were very reasonable compared to other vegan spots in my city.

Google
Food's great! Such a shame the owner has such a horrible attitude. This is NOT a sitdown restaurant with tableside service, so absolutely no way am I tipping like such. If you rely on tips to give your employees a good wage, then you simply aren't paying your employees enough. Tips are EXTRA not an EXPECTATION. Such a shame because vegetarian options are hard enough to come by.

Google
My partner and I had a really nice meal here! I had the Johnny Utah wrap with a cappuccino and he had the chimichanga with a chai. Our food and drinks were both really good, the staff were so friendly, and the space is really cute. I wish you could get the breakfast scramble without Impossible sausage, but that is super minor/personal preference. I would definitely recommend visiting whether you are vegan or not!

Google
Wish I could rate this place with 10 stars. I absolutely LOVE this little spot. ALL the dishes are exactly as mouth water as they describe! The staff is so friendly, the atmosphere is chill and welcoming. The only thing that I dislike is the parking situation which isn’t even their fault. Try it., you won’t regret it.

Google
Loved this place! Incredible made from scratch vegan food with great flavor. We got the vegan chick’n biscuit with fries and a chimichanga and both tasted amazing! We also grabbed a “cruffin” that they had available from a local baker in town which was just as good. Thank you for feeding us :)

Yelp
This was our first visit to The Smokin' Onion. My wife and I had the lemon blueberry pancakes. They were all vegan and delicious. We also tried their grilled tofu and fresh squeezed lemonade and they too were tasty. The servers were friendly and accommodating. We recommend this vegan restaurant.

Yelp
Oh my gosh, their Tuesday afternoon and evening food truck location at New Belgium Brewing is amazing. The fries with smoked onions was terrific, as was the gyro with their signature seitan. The truck looked uber clean and there was a nice shelf with utensils and napkins. The location also provides a great fake-grass field where kids can run amok. It's even on a Greenway! The food truck was so good, if we come back to the area we will definitely look up their sticks and bricks location.

Yelp
I'm a vegetarian and would prefer that dairy options were available, but in Asheville, strict veganism is pretty common, and certainly preferable to other spots where, sadly, meatless options are afterthoughts at best. Didn't get pics of all our orders - others in my party were rude and dug in quickly. The fries were very good. The ketchup tasted a little wrong but the aioli was nice. The standout here was the Cluckin' Good sandwich, which I upgraded for $1 to feature the Asheville hot chick'n patty. My oh my, the CRUNCH y'all! So stinkin' good. Wow. Service was a bit slow but I'm forgiving that because all the staff were super-cool and mega-friendly. Ambience was fun and eclectic. The dining area seemed clean. Will def be back.

Yelp
Grabbed breakfast here on the way out of town and the only downside was we wished we had discovered it sooner! All the food was terrific, French toast, chickn biscuit, vegan scramble (sports!). Had a terrific cruffin made by a local bakery too. Staff was super friendly as well. Will definitely visit if we are in the area again.

Yelp
When you are having one of those days where you just wish you could go grab some comfort food, it's always a little difficult for vegan folks. Smokin' Onion is the perfect spot for this. They have a pretty varied menu with a bunch of delicious comforting meals (some healthy options too!). The folks who run this place are kind and I love that it's counter service. In the former home of the beloved Trashy Vegan, I'm glad that the cozy, vegan vibes still remain. Thanks for being here Smokin' Onion!

Yelp
Came for breakfast and chose the Bodhi Bowl which consisted of kale, roasted potatoes, black beans, broccoli, avocado and a couple of sauces. Some of the kale was roasted, which was a nice touch. After my first bite, it seemed a bit salty, but I soldiered on. After awhile, all I could taste was salt from the sauces, to the salty beans to the potatoes. Someone was pretty heavy handed with the salt. I'm not sure if this was a one time thing or not, but since it was my only meal, it's what I have to judge it by. If I were in town again, I might give it another try. The staff was friendly and engaging and the space is decorated really cute.

Yelp
Reviewing the food only, I nonetheless feel compelled to point out that the political signaling I was greeted with upon entering was disturbing and out of touch with reality. The Asheville area is dynamic, but it contains all sorts of extremes. Fortunately for them, the country (and me) are more tolerant than whoever owns this place. The menu promises to render a very vegetarian-unfriendly Southern cuisine in entirely vegan form. Based on the breakfast platter that I ordered, mission accomplished. A resplendent variety of deliciously breaded tofu, grits and bread, and fruits and vegetables represented a balanced meal with an excellent variety of flavors. I still might consider spending my money elsewhere.

Yelp
This review is for The Smokin' Onion restaurant (they also have a food truck). It's a cute little place tucked away in the back of the same West Asheville strip shopping center as Botiwalla. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. There are only a few tables, but probably enough unless they are super busy. The staff was very friendly and efficient. The food was some of the best vegetarian food I've ever had -- so flavorful! The portions are large. Prices are reasonable. The chimichanga was so big there was enough left for another lunch. The outside was fried to perfection and the inside was stuffed full of rice and sweet potatoes. It was served over black beans with avocado slices, lettuce, pickled onions and sour cream. The Chipotle Baja sauce drizzled on top was also very tasty. The Town Gyro used seitan in place of meat, but you wouldn't know the difference. It was well seasoned and had a nice texture. It was served on a fresh pita with mixed greens, cucumber, tomatoes, diced onions and their own tzatziki sauce, which was better than some Greek/Middle Eastern restaurants. We got an order of their hand cut fries to go with it and they were fabulous. We'll definitely go back and will also try the food truck (which has a more limited menu) when we see it at one of the local breweries.

Yelp
During a short visit in Asheville, we came here twice. Food and service is excellent. I enjoyed the pancakes (as did my kid) and the chik'n & waffles. At the front of the store they have pastries and desserts - I got danishes and a brownie/cookie/marshmallow item both times. Easy to park in the dedicated parking lot, not crowded, friendly service, reasonable prices.

Yelp
Had the food truck at Whistle Hop! We got the fries and nachos, and both were so so so good. Very quick, too! It was all we smelled when we got out the car in Whistle Hop's parking lot and we knew we had to try it out

Yelp
This is now mine and my husband's new place for our breakfast dates. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is very comfortable. All the employees have been courteous and the service prompt. We can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Everything on the menu looked so good it was hard to make a choice! This is my new go to vegan spot. They have so many different options, and even have big jars of dressing for sale. I did the special that day and also got a pineapple limeade and it hit the spot. The brussel sprouts were so tasty!!!

M. N.

Yelp
Seriously did you fire the cook or something? The first time was decent to go food great for a quick pick me up lunch or dinner. But the second time the sandwich was just so bland and dry. Sure maybe the workers are having a bad day. Everybody have a bad day right? But the snobby attitude of that cashier just screams that of hating the job. geez.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service! I moved to Asheville 5 months ago and this hands down my favorite restaurant thus far. I've been a few times and have easily found parking and got a table without a wait.
google avatar

Yelp
I've had the cauliflower wrap from the truck and LOVED it -- so when my pescatarian friend came to town and we were given a 90 minute wait for another lunch spot nearby, I realized it was Saturday -- which means the restaurant is open! I got the trashy burger with fries & she got a breakfast bowl and an iced coffee. The music was great and the vibes were so fun. The person taking our order was also running the drink bar solo and doing a great job. I'm an omnivore and the trashy burger HIT (I got it with 1000 Island). I love this place so much and I hope it sticks around!

Stephen V.

Yelp
Best vegan spot in Asheville (it's saying a lot) and you'll never know onions the way you do now again the owners and staff are the best!

Fanny R.

Yelp
It's a great atmosphere, I especially liked the anti-fur sign in their restroom. I ordered the vegan Caesar salad with chickn and really enjoyed it.

Yelp
Amazing morning with family at a newer all Vegan food place in West Asheville - soooooo good Chik'n n Waffles, Pancakes, vegan Bacon, Sweet Potato grits, AVLT & Chik'n Ceaser wraps, fruit & more Meat eaters loved it too & so kind - you raise your vibes & health eating here

Angela Leigh T.

Yelp
A visiting vegan introduced me to this fabulous lunch spot! The smoking onion served delicious lunch, entrées that were truly out of this world! I now know where I will bring my next vegan friend...

Saryta R.

Yelp
We were relieved to find this place because when we went to the storefront, it said they were closed; but they had a food truck parked not far away, at a brewery. So just be mindful of that--these folks are on the move! Still, I had an amazing vegan chicken sandwich despite the fact that I forgot to ask them to hold the v-honey-mustard. It's a testament to how good the chicken and everything else on it was that I continued to eat it after noting my mistake. They also have huge, yummy chocolate-peanut-butter treats!

Yelp
Omg. I've never had a plant protein based gyro before. I think the flavorings and texture are probably hard to create but not here. They did it up right and a side of Brussels sprouts made my night. Highly recommend this even to meat eaters. It's just great food.

Celeste M.

Yelp
The food is EXCELLENT, like roll your eyes back into your head excellent, with amazing sides. Friendly staff. Cute place. Limited open hours but totally worth arranging your schedule to get there and eat the tastiest eats.

Mary M.

Yelp
Was visiting Asheville and went to smokin onion a few times, favorite fully vegan restaurant in the area. Due to allergies all I tried was the biscuits and grits which were good and wholesome! Other menu items sound good as well! Their events sound fun! Staff was friendly and helpful Welcoming place that seems to stands strong on their beliefs which is important in our current world! Will be back and although they are called the smokin onion would love if they had an allergy menu stating which foods include alliums among other things!

Yelp
You don't wanna miss this tantalizing menu! It's one of my faves. Thanks for being here SO!
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
First impression when placing my order was awesome. Met with a big smile and I appreciate someone who radiates love in what they do. Their Brussel sprouts w/sweet & Smokey mustard is DELICIOUS! Highly recommend giving the Smokin' Onion a try!

Yelp
The food truck was banging and so is their brick and mortar. Big love to you all. Huge fans.

Susan Margot E.

Yelp
We LoVed your vegan vegetarian options available at the New Belgium Brewing. We were visiting family in NC, but now back in Boston. It was a great memory hanging out with family, eating delicious food after a family friendly bike ride along the river.
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
If they changed the name of their truck to "Smokin' Buffalo Cauliflower Bites" I'd be 100% OK with that. I could eat these every day - and I'm 100% a carnivore.
google avatar

Jamie J.

Yelp
New to a plant-based diet, I wanted to try this place. I ordered the Chicken and Waffles and was presented with a plate that was truly a mess. Overly-breaded and entirely too spicy "chic'n" on a waffle that was still raw in the middle. It was such a disappointment. Vegan restaurants are limited, so I will be back at some point to try something different on the menu, but the chicken and waffles was pretty awful. There's also no wifi four patrons and the cellular signal in the establishment is very weak. I don't dine to be online, but I was dining alone and hoping to catch up on some work emails. The girl behind the counter said "unfortunately no" when I asked if there was wifi even when clearly they offer it for employees.

James G.

Yelp
Cluckin chicken sandwich was great and Brussels sprout were the best we ever had. Highly recommend.

Adam F.

Yelp
This is a must-go place to get great vegan food. Consistently deliciousl food and very welcoming people.

Kristina M.

Yelp
Ordered the gyro (w side of Brussel sprouts) & taco salad & buffalo cauliflower bites. All was beautifully seasoned! Exceeded our expectations for vegan food. Amazingly delicious!

Sophie M.

Yelp
I mourned the end of the Trashy Vegan in this spot, and I am thrilled that the Smokin' Onion has taken over its place. Huge portions of delicious vegan food, with an amazing fried "chicken" patty on a lovely thick sage biscuit. Massively recommended. Nice people and a nice space, too, a little less chaotic than my beloved Trashy Vegan's was.

Soorya T.

Yelp
I can't say enough wonderful things about the Smokin' Onion. The food is free of chemicals, and mostly made from scratch. I dream about their homemade ranch dressing, which they sell, with other dressings I haven't tried yet. Their new restaurant rocks! So organized and efficient. Truly, Asheville is lucky to have this place. If you are looking for creative, home cooked meals that are gourmet delicious, this is your spot.

Jane H.

Yelp
The fried pickles were fantastic, salty, sour and freshly wonderful. I will be tracking them down whenever I'm in Asheville. No regrets

Anna S.

Yelp
I came a couple weeks ago and had the Buffalo cauliflower and couldn't stop thinking about it! Ordered it again today and it did not disappoint! It's the best d*** cauliflower I've ever had! You have to try it!
google avatar

Jillian T.

Yelp
Amazing food truck! We had the Buffalo cauliflower po boy and the cheese steak sandwich and both were incredible. The cashew queso on the cheese steak was some of the best I've had. Finished with the s'mores pot de creme and loved it.

Joshua R.

Yelp
Great food served quickly and with a smile! I would definitely recommend checking out this new food truck if you live in or are visiting Asheville, NC.

Truth B.

Yelp
My favorite food truck and it just happens to be all vegan!! I can't believe they make everything from scratch and still manage to add new items to their menu. The gyro and ABLT wrap are my go-to orders - you gotta try them!!

Natacha H.

Yelp
Today was the first time my husband and I tried The Smokin Onion food truck. They were at New Belgium Brewing today and we had a late lunch of their veggie burger and French fries. Soooo good that we came back for dinner!!

Mary Lynne A.

Yelp
Visited The Smokin Onion for lunch today at New Belgium. The food was so delicious we came back for dinner! Great food and even better service!
