How to Plan a Ski Trip to Mt. Hood Meadows

"Located just across the Oregon state line in Bingen, Washington, this property pairs affordable shared accommodations (hostel-style bunk rooms and hotel rooms with shared baths) with private cabins that have en suite bathrooms and kitchenettes, and includes full spa and bathhouse access—an indoor saltwater pool, outdoor hot pool, cold plunge, and cedar sauna—which is offered to all guests." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. Eat and Drink Your Way Through the Columbia River Gorge

"Opened in 2019, the Society Hotel in Bingen is an excellent place to sip on an Aperol spritz and nestle into a comfy lounge chair surrounded by a crackling fire and shelves upon shelves of books. The establishment, originally built as a school in 1937, is tucked away from the main street and draws mostly those who seek it out, meaning that for now, it’s still a hidden gem. Here you’ll find timeless cocktails like a classic daiquiri served up or a refreshing Pimm’s Cup paired with new-age mocktails made with nonalcoholic herbal spirits. The café and lounge also offers local beer and wine, sandwiches, and simple snacks." - Melissa Haskin, Molly Allen

The Society Hotel Bingen

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe?If it weren’t for the slate chalkboards, the old gym floor in the event space, and placards on the room doors denoting English, Home Ec and Music, you’d never guess The Society Hotel in the Columbia River Gorge town of Bingen, Washington, was an old schoolhouse. The wood siding on the main building is a painted a dramatic, hipster dark gray, and the old ball field has been transformed into a giant ring of modern-looking cedar cabins all joined under one circular roof, with hammock-strung breezeways overlooking the river, and a full-service spa in the center. There’s not a lot going on in the tiny town of Bingen, but vibrant Hood River, with its boutiques, brewpubs and outdoor outfitters, is a top destination and just a 10-minute drive across the river. What's the backstory? This is the year-old country cousin to the original Society Hotel in downtown Portland. Both have a similar youthful vibe with a upscale Euro hostel format. Their goal is to make travel affordable, fun and convivial. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? There are three main types of accommodations: Bunks, standard rooms, and cabins. The bunks aim to elevate the typical hostel bunk experience. The mattresses are thick, the duvets fluffy, and the steel bed frames are so sturdy you’ll never feel your bunkmate tossing and turning in the night. Each bunk has a curtain for privacy, a little reading light, plug to charge your devices, and an assigned storage locker and bathroom. There’s even a kitchenette for all to share, in case you want to prep your own snacks or keep your leftovers in the fridge. The standard rooms are ideal for couples, who typically want more privacy and a bigger bed (queen or king), but don’t feel the need to have a toilet and shower in their room. There’s a sink, but otherwise you’ll share the bathroom with another couple or two. And the cabins are like a deluxe version of the rooms, sporting the same light, airy, and simple yet stylish décor, but better suited for families who need two beds or those who want a little more space to stretch out and enjoy a seating area and kitchenette. Outside, each cabin has patio overlooking the central spa area, with a hammock, picnic table and spot to lock up your bike if you brought it. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?Wifi is fast and free. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?The counter-service bar and café in the lobby opens at 7 a.m. for locally roasted coffee, tea and pastries. In the afternoon and evenings, you can get a cold pint or a cocktail to unwind with on the couch by the fire, or outside by the fire pit, plus a small selection of salads, sandwiches and bowl. The café at the spa has juices, kombucha, beer, cocktails and healthy snacks. But if you have a car, your best bet for a great meal is to head across the river to the town of Hood River, where upscale pubs and bistros abound. And the service?Getting checked-in is easy. The desk is centrally located in the big, airy lobby, which doubles as a community gathering space with a little café on one end and a library of books and sofas on the other. Though the rooms are all gorgeously renovated and up-to-date, they’re pretty analog in terms of how they work. What type of travelers will you find here? The Gorge is an outdoorsy playground attracting active people of all ages. But like its older sibling in downtown Portland, The Society Hotel is definitely geared toward a younger crowd, one that’s used to communal living and is willing to share a bathroom if it means getting to sleep in luxury and partake of spa amenities for the same price as a bland, cookie-cutter motel. Guests are hip, sporty and like to be social, congregating in the many gathering places throughout the property that promote getting to know your fellow travelers. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? There's not a lot going on in Bingen. In fact, the hotel is pretty much it. Most of the action is on the river, or in nearby Hood River. But that's why this place is such a great getaway after a day of fun in the Gorge. Rest up and relax, then drive 10 minutes to Hood River for kiteboarding and nightlife, or 10 minutes to White Salmon for white water rafting. Is there anything you'd change?More trees for shade would be ideal. Any other hotel features worth noting? The bright, airy spa is not to be missed. Available to all guests, it features an outdoor hot tub, as well as an indoor soaking pool, cold plunge and shower, plus a spacious sauna and changing rooms. All pools are saline rather than chlorine-treated. Private rooms for massage and bodywork are available by appointment for an added fee. A round sanctuary dug into the hillside provides a cool, quiet space for yoga and meditation. Just grab a mat by the front door. It can also be rented out for special events. And if you don’t have a car, don’t worry, you can get to the hotel from downtown Portland on the Amtrak train, which arrives just a few blocks away each afternoon. Bottom line: Worth it? Why?Who wouldn’t want affordable luxury in the heart of one of the most beautiful, and fun, areas of the state?" - Danielle Centoni

This review was mainly about sustainability! I so appreciate that you don’t serve single use plastics on the premises, and that your concessions are largely served in glass bottles or aluminum cans. Also: you did not have to go this hard on the absolutely glorious native landscaping!!! I am truly blown away by whoever your landscape architect or gardener is. What a stunning, stunning job they’ve done. So lush and cozy and peaceful. I wish more places would be as intentional as you are in integrating the built environment with the natural environment. This is an absolutely lovely place to stay. Thank you so much!

We had such a great anniversary celebration stay at the Society Hotel in Bingen. The staff were all super friendly and helpful—everyone made us feel really welcome from the start. Our room was clean, stylish, and super comfortable—simple in the best way.||The hotel grounds were awesome, with lots to do. We loved the gym area, especially the basketball court and all the fun games they had set up. It gave the place a really relaxed, community vibe.||After hiking around the gorge and Mt. Hood, the spa was exactly what we needed—so relaxing and well-designed. Overall, everything felt really thoughtful and well cared for.||Great service, great space, and just a really good vibe all around. We’re already talking about coming back!

Staying here was such a treat! The hotel itself and the rooms were so clean and cozy (I stayed in a private room with shared bathroom). The spa alone was worth the visit, but I would absolutely say here again for the general ambiance, location and vibe. The only semi-negative was the distance to the main street (Jewett) with bars and restaurants—it was a tad far to walk but a really easy drive.

Great wellness getaway spot for friends or couples. The grounds are lovely with areas to sneak away and chill in a hammock or hang and have a cocktail. Spa is well maintained and fairly chill, groups of people do come and get chatty so don't expect complete serenity. Rooms are clean and modern and have all the basics you'd need to cook up a simple meal. The spartan kitchen is clutch bc the town of Bingen doesn't have many accommodations. We drove to white salmon for breakfast, made ourselves lunch in the room, and went to hood river for dinner.

A very relaxing get away. This converted school house offered comfortable rooms, an incredible spa experience with warm and hot pools, a cedar sauna, and a cold plunge, and the onsite amenities were great. We had great breakfast from the cafe onsite and went into the town of White Salmon five minutes away for great dinner and drinks. We stayed in a queen room with a shared bathroom in the main school house. The rooms were minimal but comfortable and the shared bathroom was never a problem. Private cabins with private bathrooms are also available. Overall a wonderful experience!

We stayed at The Society for one night in a King room with a shared bath. The main lounge, spa, and grounds are all lovely. Very peaceful and well maintained, which made for a relaxing atmosphere. That said, the room itself felt quite bare bones for the $230 price. It had just a bed and a desk, no TV or extra amenities. The walls were also very thin — we could hear other guests pretty clearly. While the shared bathroom was not an issue, it is worth noting you’re paying a premium for a very simple and not-so-private space. The onsite cafe was also surprisingly expensive - we paid $12 for a quiche and a coffee cake, both about the size of a palm. Another downside was the check-in and check-out times (4 PM and 11 AM), which made the stay feel quite short for a one-night trip. Overall, the hotel has a beautiful setting and the spa was a highlight, but in terms of value, it did not quite feel worth the cost.

Wow, loved every detail. This place is so thoughtfully managed. The water circuit was lovely, the staff was so helpful and kind. I would definitely stay here again for my next vineyard trip! They even had my favorite local wine available on site and their little cafe prepared delightful lunch. Loved the Society!

I'm writing this review as someone who has stayed here before and whose family used to visit the original Bingen Hostel (a true gem)--but after this visit, I definitely won't be rebooking or recommending. The location is beautiful, which is exactly why my partner and I booked a weekend here. All we wanted was a peaceful stay to unwind. Instead, we were placed in the bunk room with a large group connected to a private party happening on site the same evening. They completely took over the space, and between that, the packed spa, and the full parking lot (we had to park on the street), it felt nothing like the quiet, communal experience this place advertises. Besides the chaotic bunk room, the spa was also bad; you only get one hour to soak, etc, and everyone is scheduled to arrive and leave at the same time so the changing room is is always completely packed when you need it most. To make things worse, when I mentioned our experience to the front desk at checkout, the response was so nonchalant that it honestly felt like this kind of thing happens all the time. No surprise, no real concern--just the feeling that they're used to this. I get that it's not entirely the hotel's responsibility to manage every guest's behavior. But when groups are allowed to take up so much space and energy that it completely changes the experience for everyone else, it leaves a bad taste. I'm sorry that I just can't take it anymore. We didn't get a refund, and I understand that we were outside the cancellation window, obviously. But when the experience is that disappointing and you make the effort to reach out privately (to receive only a dismissive response), you'd expect at least a small gesture to make it right. Even a partial refund for one of the bunks would've gone a long way. Or spa passes for a later date. Instead, it felt like once they had our money, end of conversation. What's frustrating is how easily this could have been avoided. A heads-up at booking or even the option to reschedule would've made all the difference. But it feels like they're more focused on cramming the space full than making sure guests actually have a good experience. Overall it's just a massive bummer.
