Portland’s Best Bars and Cafes That Play Vinyl Records | Eater Portland

"This rambunctious rumpus room of a hangout bar is a welcome addition to an area that’s primarily known for an antiques mall and the historic Hollywood Theater. The vibe here is “tiki bar in a fun uncle’s garage” — think shelves overflowing with island-life tchotchkes and a hodgepodge of 1970s ephemera. Sonder’s food menu is mostly hangout-friendly chips and dips, while the cocktail menu has a tropical flair. The standout feature is its squadron of absolutely titanic loudspeakers that look capable of blowing doors off the Hollywood Bowl, let alone this modestly sized mid-century strip mall storefront in the perennially up-and-coming Hollywood neighborhood." - Ben Coleman

The Best Restaurants and Bars in Portland’s Hollywood Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Inheriting the light-filled former home of beloved vegan breakfast spot Nectar Cafe, the recently opened Sonder Bar is a neighborhood cocktail bar aspiring to be an oasis for audiophiles from across the city. From deep cuts from the bar’s in-house LP collection to high-demand DJ nights featuring legends like Tony Humphries, Sonder promises to be a destination for Portlanders who want their ears delighted as much as their palates. House cocktails include a caipirinha — Brazilian rum and lime — and a St. Germaine fizz." - Nathan Williams

Creatives and musicians of all types show up here simply to listen to music and indulge in a beer, cocktail, and a light conversation about music. I cannot recommend it. It's small so leave your 4+ crowd at home. You'll love it solo or with +1-3 at most!

Google
Quaint venue that was a lovely break from ginormous crowds and filled with only fun loving, dancing fans of fantastic music! Parking all around as it’s located in Portland’s Hollywood District. The ambience, très éclectique chic. The bar is stocked with good spirits and the food was fantastic. I recommend the Chicken Satay and Pot Stickers. More than anything, I’m an old skool vinyl junkie, so the Vinyl Bar theme absolutely appeals to me.

Sonder Bar is a little hidden gem of Northeast Portland. I have been to several shows there, and their sound system is absolutely top notch, making it a real pleasure for listening and dancing. Very relaxed mellow vibes, even for bigger shows. The drinks are decent and fairly averagedly priced for Portland. I haven't had too too much of their food offerings, but the snacks I have had were for sure yummy. The staff is all super nice and really welcoming and helpful. I always look forward to a show at Sonder!

I've been to Sonder a few times now and I really love it! First off, the staff is wonderful and friendly. Clearly they like working here. Cocktails are tasty and reasonably priced. But the real reason to come is the vibes. Always good music going and, if you're anything like me, your stress levels will drop as soon as you walk in.

Cool bar in an unsuspecting and unassuming shopping center. Loved the plant wall. And the wall of alcohol. Lol! They had a great selection of bourbons.

Google
Really cool bar concept in the sea of same-y dives and chic-by-price spots around town. We decided to pop in here before catching a movie at the Hollywood Theater, and I am glad we did! We hit happy hour, and grabbed some of the highball + beer specials, and shared a buffalo quesadilla. The drinks were served with a warm smile, and the food wasn't too shabby for the price (I think it was $10 for the quesadilla, and not a happy hour item). The vibe inside is immaculate. Lush green plants, records stacked to the ceiling, and an attentive DJ spinning select vinyl and keeping the vibe just right. I saw someone in another review complain that the music was loud, and while it is "louder" than your average spot, that is kind of the theme of the bar. Trust in the music selection, and just roll with it. Thanks for the good times, we will definitely be back the next time we catch a flick in the neighborhood!

Google
Cute spot with delicious cocktails and great small food. Attended a private event here for NYE last night. They had a yummy kimchi type cucumber salad and a potato empanada of sorts. Not sure if they are available all the time, but delicious for a late night snack. The lighting and atmosphere was really fun. Great place to meet up with friends.

Great spot. Hip aesthetics. DJs all the time playing awesome music. Delicious cocktails. Top 5 spots to listen to great local DJs. But still small and cozy.

Yelp
Sonder is one of Portland's social listening spaces, modeled after listening bars in Japan, and around the world. They have food, a full bar, and it is a great place to meet. Sometimes they drop a DJ event. They were able to bring famous DJ François K for an evening of local DJs from 5PM to 9, then François K to 2. François K began his DJ journey in 1976 in NYC. Essentially it was a house party for well under 100 people with an international DJ at a very reasonable ticket price. Only in Portland. Only at Sonder. The door was polite and the crowd was polite. There were no unwelcome club advances. There was no overselling nonsense and readmission lines. There is an area outside to cool off and converse when the dance floor is steamy. Water in cups that are washed and reused, not landfilled. I had a nice conversation with the owner and have some suggestions for future bookings. It was fun to see a little Melbourne Shuffle break out! One of our previous CMs did some DJing and would have loved this event and the venue. It is also an update of the fern bar, with healthy plants doing well with the South facing window. There is some outdoor seating screened by a wood structure from the parking lot. Get on their socials for special events if you like.

Yelp
I wanted a good cocktail, a good chair, and space, mentally and physically, for reading. I found it at Sonder. The music is great, the space not bright, but light enough to read in. I am now sitting in a nice teak-armed chair staring at the monstrous plants in the windows enjoying a Moscow mule, stuffed with fresh mint, and fresh lime juice. As I write the bartender is hand juicing oranges. For this delicious drink, made with my vodka of choice, the price was more than reasonable. Some time I'll try the slushy of the day. I am not hungry enough to try the food - even so, the menu still tempted me. There are plenty of places to sit - tables, couches, lounge chairs, bar stools. The location is almost hidden, but any map will take you there. Why hasn't it yet?

Yelp
Great neighborhood location for music and libations. Love the energy and feel of the spot. The patio is perfect and the staff is welcoming and inviting. I would definitely stop here for drinks and kickin it.
