Which Minneapolis and St. Paul Patios Are Open Right Now, Summer 2020 | Eater Twin Cities

"I found their patio is currently open with tables sometimes placed on existing patios, in parking lots, or on sidewalks; guests are asked to wear masks and all staff will be masked, with precautions in place—check with the restaurant for individual days and hours. Studies suggest lower exposure risk when dining outdoors, but that benefit depends on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines." - Joy Summers

Google
Sonora Grill continues to be one of my go-to spots. I’ve been here probably 20 times, and it’s a place I keep coming back to for good reason. The presentation of the food is always amazing, and they hands-down have the best salsa around. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’m addicted to it — it’s honestly one of the main reasons we will continue to come back. The atmosphere is awesome and makes for a great dining experience whether you’re out with family or friends. The server was amazing, attentive, friendly, and made us feel well taken care of from start to finish. This visit, I tried the chimichanga, and while it looked fantastic, it just wasn’t my favorite. For me, it had too much breading and not enough meat, which is why I’m giving the food four stars instead of five. That said, I’ve had many other dishes here that are excellent. The carne asada is amazing, the coconut rice is outstanding, and the carnitas are very good as well. Even when a dish doesn’t quite hit for me, Sonora Grill is still a place I enjoy and recommend. Between the service, atmosphere, and that salsa, I’ll absolutely be back.

Google
Sonora Grill in Ogden was absolutely amazing. The queso platter alone is worth the visit — they make it right in front of you, and it is hands down one of the most delicious queso dips I’ve ever had. Fresh, rich, and full of flavor. I had the chile verde bowl with red rice, and it was the perfect portion. Every bite was savory and flavorful — not bland or lacking like you often find at other Mexican-American restaurants. You can really taste the quality and care in the food. I honestly think I’ve found my new favorite place for Mexican-American food. I’d highly recommend going here with your significant other first so you can really enjoy the atmosphere and experience, and then coming back with the kids to fully take in everything this place has to offer. We will definitely be back

Google
Surreal ambiance. They've got the entire psychology of elegant presentation down pat. The waiter was very helpful, friendly, funny, and most attentive. The food was brought out quickly, and it looked like a famous chef had prepared our meals. Gorgeous presentation. Quiet and intimate ambiance. We had a most pleasant experience, and we will be returning.

Google
I would definitely eat here again. While it is not traditional Mexican food, it was delicious. The coconut rice was soft and mildly sweet. The carne asada plate was pretty good. I was not a huge fan of the mint in the green topping, but it was good nonetheless. The red salsa was quite unique and reminded me of something like a salsa macha. Just a couple of things that really don't matter a ton, but could be improved. My corn tortillas fell apart on me. They likely were not fresh. The flank steak was not exactly cut against the grain. It was sliced diagonally, so kind of against the grain. Cutting it against the grain would have improved eating it in a tortilla. Each tortilla I filled with meat I had to pull full pieces of meat out when I took a bite because I could not bite through the steak. The flank steak was juicy and delicious. I tried the chile verde that my wife got and it was also really good. I don't think you can go wrong eating here. Like I said, the food was delicious and I will go back if we are in the area.

Google
First time trying this place and it was delicious! Our waitress got to us right away and took great care of us. Would definitely recommend this place for a nice meal with a friend or even your whole family. 🙂. Would highly recommend. Noah is a great server. Treated us well and swiftly. Food was amazing, hot, and fresh from the kitchen. Service was great. Atmosphere is inviting and cozy

Google
This place has the vibe locked in, the design is well done, the people are always kind, the service is always great. And last but not least the food is always delicious. I love the avocado salad, it is delicious 😋

Google
this place is so good!!! the food was incredible i was so surprised. coming from california i thought we had good mexican food but sonora takes it to the next level! our waitress raiyna was so attentive and accommodating. we had multiple allergies and dietary restrictions and she made sure we were all safe and taken care of.

Google
Collin was our waiter and we both quickly agreed he was the best waiter we have ever had. (Saying something because we eat out often!) was so kind, knew what to reccomend and made sure we were satisfied. The food was absolutely delicious. Bold, fresh and so satisfying! The flavors were on point. Wanted to drink the tomatillo salsa! 😂 new favorite Mexican cuisine!

Yelp
Had a small business lunch here. Food was a great price and the salsa (which is how I judge Mexican restaurants) was homemade and delicious. Service was very good and ensured we had everything we needed plus kept on schedule. I will be back in a few weeks.

Yelp
Went to the website and it appears you MUST make a reservation. I clicked on the day I wanted and there were only 3 time slots! Wow, this place must be amazing since it's a Tuesday! Decided to give them a call to see if there were any tables, just in case. To my surprise there was! I got so excited. I arrived at my reservation time of 615 and was promptly seated... in a near empty restaurant. Why the need for reservations? Anyway... after placing our quickly order (since we had studied the menu at home)... finally AN HOUR LATER our food arrived. The server apologized and said we got stuck behind a large party. Now, I'm no scientist, but wouldn't you assume if the restaurant required reservations and their system was showing a fully booked house, including a large party, wouldn't you bring on maybe just one more chef? Anyway... the food was great. Service, not so much!

Yelp
Used to be fabulous...now, a lot of their staff is generally unfriendly except for the manager who is fantastic. Allow random solicitors to come in and bother customers. Maybe, keep an eye out for this... The ladies room smells awful always. Maybe a big thing they are facing there with plumbing. Their food is fantastic! Hopefully, they do not allow a good thing to go downhill. I do love their food, their business ethics overall. Everyone has an off day...feeling some positive changes might be on the horizon. But their food and drinks far surpass a lot of places...so...

Yelp
Mouthwatering Mexican food served to you from scratch, no heat lamps or pre-prepared meals in a cooler. The menu is derived of imported Mexican or local ingredients whenever possible and it shows. A particular shout out to the shrimp fajitas with just-cooked tortillas! Fantastic bar too. The service was beyond impressive. The food gods honored us with Colin, who provided solutions for all of our pickiness and questions, and whipped up a mean chorizo- and beer-based queso tableside. His suggestions for drink roulette with our libations helped us get two original drinks that had us discussing them on our way back to Salt Lake after the meal. This place is an escalation of Mexican food and as a result, you'll get an enhanced experience as well as food quality. It's a great place to take a date or out-of-town visitor and not have to worry about loss of social capital through inconsistency, poor flavor or meh ambiance.

Yelp
I keep telling myself that I am never going back. Well tonight was the final straw. We will never go back. I ordered the beef enchiladas and my wife ordered the shrimp fajitas both dishes were terrible. My beef was chicken snd her fajitas were served on a cold plate. See photos. We told our server and she said oh well. Can you believe it. If you are considering this establishment. All I can say is DON'T. Poor service and terrible food. I am sure with their don't care attitude, they never read their reviews. Never been to a Mexican restaurant that charges $4.50 for chips and salsa
google avatar

Yelp
WOW. This place is so cozy and hit the Mexican vibes spot on! The service was nice, nothing over the top but the food!!! Excellent. Legitimate Mexican flavors! The rice was perfect in flavor and texture. I got flautas, they come only in shredded chicken, they were absolutely delicious. My husband got the burrito and it had two diff salsas on each side, red on one half and green on the other. Amazing. We also got esquites for out appetizer, great taste. When we arrived it was a 25 minute wait on a Friday 330pm. I suggest making reservations ahead of time. It wasn't too bad, we took a stroll around all the shops while we waited. It's no wonder it's busy, the food is soooo good!
google avatar

Cami C.

Yelp
The food wasn't terrible but wasn't great either. The only tacos they offer are fish tacos. And the salsa was actually gross, too much liquid smoke. Reasonably priced and wasn't too busy during lunch hour.
google avatar

Yelp
We a surprise birthday party for our son, with over 40 people in attendance. The came out very fast for a group that large and was delicious. Drinks were great and service excellent. An overall great experience and I'm glad we picked Sonora Grill.
google avatar

RD C.

Yelp
Came for a work lunch, it's been 50 minutes and I've gotten water and chips. We were required to pre-order so they've had our orders weeks in advance. Food here is meh at best anyway.
google avatar

Josh J.

Yelp
I was in the area for Meeple Treks this weekend and they were across the street. If you can't find street parking then there is a free parking garage one block west that I would use. We arrived around 3pm on a Friday and there was a short wait. They were really good and communicative about our gift card use and the menu options. I got the chimichanga and it was probably the fanciest chimichanga I will ever have. Pricey but excellent ingredients and plating. If you are sensitive to spicy food, watch out- the food is spicy by default here. One of my dining companions said that the salad could have used more lettuce. My mock mojito was perfect. The atmosphere was classy. It would make a great date night spot. The food came out quickly and we were well taken care of the whole visit. Highly recommended!

Yelp
The Sonora grill is very inviting with wood beams and exposed ceiling. I went for lunch and it was pretty quiet. I got the carne asada plate. I get the flank / skirt steak is a chewier cut of meat but man was it tough to chew. There were quite a few pieces I had to unfortunately spit out. The guacamole was brown on top and the steak was cold and lacked flavor. The rice had good flavor. The waiter was attentive and friendly. Good atmosphere. Nice waitstaff but the food was not that good. It definitely looked better than it tasted. A bit disappointing. And you have to pay for chips and salsa which IMO is a crime lol

Jasper Shekin Jeyaseelan J.

Yelp
Great place. Definitely recommended for small parties. Service was amazing, customizations available

Izzy T.

Yelp
Waiter didn't let me modify my order, messed up my food twice, and the waiter disappeared every time I needed to send my food back.
google avatar

Tessa T.

Yelp
Pretty eh to me. My husband got the taquitos and loved them. I got the enchiladas and didn't take more than a bite, not a fan at all of the flavors. I also don't love that they charge you for chips salsa, unfortunately I don't think they can claim to be high end enough to not include it. Service was fine but nothing special.
google avatar

Shaun M.

Yelp
We love the Sonora Grill! Always great service and outstanding Mexican food! We especially like the Queso Fundido for an appetizer.
google avatar

Aspen G.

Yelp
The food is so good and they have options for everyone! Vegans, vegetarians, and all! The atmosphere is very nice and relaxing but also inviting and fun...a good balance. The prices are a bit in the high side but nothing crazy. The service was probably the best part. Our server was very attentive and helpful. I highly recommend and we will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jolene W.

Yelp
Unless you like tasteless food, don't waste your time and money. Service was the only good thing they offer
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
This was a nice surprise. We were looking for a place to eat in Ogden because we had an appointment up here, so we just looked for restaurants in the area. This one was one of the first to come up. And they have a pretty big selection of vegan items, which was awesome for my friend. The staff were very friendly! The food was delicious! And it is located in a really nice neighborhood! A lot of restaurants and stores close by. Even a movies theater. We are planning on a return visit next time we are in town.

Yelp
Margarita was the best one I've had in a long time. I tried the Fresca and it really was so fresh. Also got the tortilla salad which was OK - got soggy fast. My boyfriend loved the chimichanga and said it was the best he's had. The shell was so crispy. Overall very good and a pleasant surprise!

Kath S.

Yelp
Our server was bubbly, friendly and knowledgeable. The food was delicious- chile verde burrito , chicken fajitas , margarita and a cheesecake slice for dessert. Very reasonable prices and we will go back!

Yelp
I was up in Ogden about a month ago for work and we decided on this restaurant for lunch. We were able to get in very quickly which was great! As you enter the establishment, the interior is warm and welcoming, but seems a little confused. It feels like they're trying to achieve a modern Mexican influenced upscale restaurant, but there are some industrial elements that seem a bit out of place (especially considering that the ceiling is comprised of completely exposed ductwork). The service was okay! Because of the time of day it was when we went, it was relatively busy so we didn't get the most genuinely interested or engaged interactions with our server, but she was fairly speedy! Regarding the food, I wouldn't suggest what I got if you're looking for authenticity. I ordered the Shrimp Chile Relleno and while a Chile relleno is consistently a favorite dish I enjoy ordering at Mexican restaurants, this was like the distant cousin of a Chile relleno. When I looked up other photos from reviews that had a chile relleno, I very quickly learned that the shrimp chile relleno does not appear to be battered in the same way. The batter around the chile had a flakier texture and crumbled off very easily. Also, the cheese inside was very surprising - it lacked any cheese pull abilities! In fact, it quite possibly seemed to be a cream cheese consistency within which was somewhat off-putting texturally. Overall, the flavor was okay; I would definitely consider it a miss as far as giving you the same flavors as a normal Chile relleno would, and I don't think this was due to any of the flavor influence from the shrimp. Considering the whole experience, it sufficed for a quick work lunch, but pivoted from delivering authenticity with the meal.

Yelp
This was the best tomatillo salsa I've ever had! The red salsa had this exquisite Smokey flavor I couldn't put my finger on. I personally had the burrito and it was amazing! Just perfect and HUGE!!! The chicken was all the way through not skimpy at the end like some places do. JJ our server was super nice and knowledgeable. Decor was very modern with lots of space. Very close to the ballpark and Historic 25th street. I would eat here again and again and again. Too bad I'm just passing through from Houston.
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
Food is so freaking good!! Service is always great. They never leave my soda empty. I love the green salsa!
google avatar

Andi S.

Yelp
Beautiful decor perfect for any occasion big or small. Many tasty vegan options; love the enchiladas! Lots of creative cocktails. Has gotten popular over the last few years so I definitely recommend making a reservation for weekend evenings. They seem to be cutting back in recent years though as they no longer offer chips and salsa for free. Fajitas only come with 2 small tortillas (though the waitress was happy to fetch 2 at time). No rice or beans came with either entree as is standard in most places.

Mary C.

Yelp
I arrived less than an hour before closing on a Mon night. My server was amazing, the margaritas tasty, and the carnitas perfectly cooked ... I'll definitely be back!!

Craig R.

Yelp
Food is decent, but I have a real issue with Mexican food places that charge for chips and salsa. Maybe this is not cool for me to give it a bad review for this but the food is not that great, it's decent but not incredible and there are literally 100 different Mexican food restaurants from Ogden to Provo that give free chips and salsa so I guess it's just kind of principle. . They think they're too good to give free chips and salsa. To be honest, I would prefer they added a dollar to every item on the menu and pay a little bit more and then just include the chips and salsa for free. But that is just me I may or may not go back. Probably won't go out of my way unless I happen to be in the area.

Annie K.

Yelp
Love their food! They also have a skinny margarita not on the menu! The wait staff are always kind

Yelp
Outstanding service at Sonora Grill "Nick" thank you for your service today.. My drink was absolutely delicious

Heather F.

Yelp
We celebrated my father-in-laws 89th birthday for lunch and everything was wonderful! The food, the service, and the ambiance is fabulous! I also have celiac disease and they were very attentive to my dietary needs. Thanks so much!
google avatar

Brianne C.

Yelp
The food was great. I loved the tropical twist on the rice--it really sets the place apart from other Mexican dining. I asked for several changes to my chimichanga, and the server was very gracious.
google avatar

Taylor T.

Yelp
I have been here many times over the years and remember being excited when it opened. Any time I am in Ogden we try to stop by and at least grab some of the chips and salsa. We went again yesterday for a double date and we all enjoyed our meals. The service was excellent and quick. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Table side guacamole, chips and salsa, were delicious as usual. My husband got the carne asad plate, I got the arroz con pollo and our friends got the enchiladas. Rice, beans, it all was delicious. Highly recommend.

Brian B.

Yelp
I have really enjoyed this restaurant in the past. But I am seeing some disturbing changes. I was in the restaurant for Valentine's dinner on 02/14/2025. My date and I ordered the rib eye Valentine's special with the adobo grilled shrimp. The steak was good when the food finally arrived but sat on a french fries bed! The server was supposedly on a break, but our shrimp didn't show up. When the shrimp showed up - they were so salty that my date and I could only eat one. The last time I visited Sonora, I wanted to buy the coconut flan but was told they didn't have any. All in all, I have always been pleased with Sonora Grill - but the quality of food needs to be drastically improved.
google avatar

Seth G.

Yelp
Food is good but now they charge for chips and salsa. Even crappy Mexican places include this with your meal. Sonora Grill is not good enough to pull this kind of garbage. Shame!

Rich B.

Yelp
Service: Excellent attention from our server, knowledge of the menu and drinks. Ambiance: good layout, comfortable Food: this was not our first visit and it has always met with our approval. Tonight, however, not so good. I ordered the Al Pastor Fish Taco and was very disappointed. The taco's were very moist, almost wet and soggy. The very small pieces of fish were difficult to even find. Not what I expected. I think our other 5 friends were satisfied with their meals and service. Rich Bauter Bauterrich@msn.com
google avatar

Allyson W.

Yelp
This place was really good, avocado tostada was delicious and so were the rice and beans. Only giving it 4 stars because the salsa could use some work, we were not impressed with any of the 3 options. Wait staff was very friendly and accommodating.
google avatar

Dustin D.

Yelp
Atmosphere was great. Server was great. And that's about it. Food was horrible, I won't be back. Everyone in my party swears it use to be better but I ate three bites and paid. Not even worth taking home. Cochinita pibil was what I ordered for those interested in knowing. Also the chips and they were stale. Nope and nope.

Lori P.

Yelp
Upscale Mexican. I love the carnitas! I had the Chimichanga here for the first time. It's , usually my favorite Mexican dish on the go, but I didn't love this one. I usually get the Carnitas and it is the BEST dish! The service was great and it was a quiet afternoon so we were able to actually have a conversation at the table. Sonora Grill is one of our favorite places to eat.

Cody C.

Yelp
Food was unbelievably burnt. Steak was cooked until it shriveled up. Vegetables were half black. Had to throw away a waste of 50$ on 2 burritos. Below mediocre food save your money. Kitchen shouldn't allow burnt food to be served.
google avatar

Jesus O.

Yelp
From the chips to the margaritas this place was delicious! We ordered the cochinita pibil bowl, Chile verde bowl and arroz con pollo bowl. All were good but the arroz con pollo bowl was amazing! That enchilada sauce was soooo good. Will definitely come back just for this.
google avatar

Chuck S.

Yelp
Sonora grew was amazing. Can't get used to the fact that when I'm in Utah, I have to pay for my chips and salsa, but nevertheless it was not disappointing by any means very unique.

Elsa P.

Yelp
Loved their food very much. The vegan options were so good. I had the avocado tostada and the flavor was amazing. Husband had carna asada platter and loved it. The queso made at the table was a great treat and the fresh guacamole was wonderful. Our drinks were spot on and the flan was incredible. We came from Washington to try this place and we rate way above 10.
google avatar

Chelsey B.

Yelp
The food was so good! They had so many vegan options, which can be hard to find in Utah. The staff was amazing and so on top of it. Overall very great, would highly recommend.
google avatar

Raul G.

Yelp
I haven't had a chance to stop by in quite some time BUT when I did, the food was great and the service was spectacular. The QUESO FUNDIDO (cheese dip) was AMAZING. The chorizo it comes with was awesome. Fun spot with good food and excellent service

Tricia P.

Yelp
The staff is excellent and very attentive. We had four different birthday parties, each with very large groups, and they were terrific.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic food Fantastic service We try to go for every special occasion Best ceviche ever!!
google avatar

Craig M.

Yelp
The service here is amazing. The flavors of our meal were outstanding! They make the beans and salads stand out with some very unique flavors. The other dishes we tried we also different in a good way.

Julie F.

Yelp
Food is excellent! I like the atmosphere, it is nice! Most of the time the service is great.
google avatar

Troy A.

Yelp
This place was fantastic! The food was great and atmosphere was comfortable! Angie was very knowledgeable and a joy to be served by her! I like to try new things and these dishes were a hit as was shared amongst 3 of us! The Cochinita Pibil which was suggested by Angie as she explained the menu. This dish was different in the best way possible especially for myself not being a pork eater. The flavors in this dish worked perfectly. Also ordered Arroz Con Pollo and this dish though different was equally satisfying! Finished of with a Chile Chocolate Brownie Ala Mode which was devoured in seconds! The hint of Chile in the brownie was complemented with the sweetness of chocolate the vanilla ice cream added the delightful finish! Try it if you want to be overly satisfied'

Yelp
Good Mexican food, very clean. Great ambiance family restaurant. Service is good. Fairly new when we went.
