The Best Places to Dine in Fredericksburg, Virginia | Eater DC

"This local gem offers a satisfying blend of Tex-Mex and Latin American flavors. The tacos are simple, fresh, and flavorful. The rich and smoky tortilla soup is a fan favorite, topped with avocado, cheese, and crispy tortilla strips. Tacos served in pairs come packed and include options like slow-cooked carnitas, chipotle chicken, carne asada, and shrimp. Everything is made on-site and served fresh, and the casual setting makes it a great lunch stop while exploring downtown. Fredericksburg gets down on these taco so hard, they had to open a second location dubbed Soup and Taco II." - Robey Martin

This is an abdolute must have when visiting downtown Fredericksburg! The restaurant looks absolutely adorable from the outside, and is actually quite established on the inside. We immediately were given complementary chips to munch on when we sat down. The staff was incredibly sweet to us. The food was served quickly and everything was perfect, in terms of both quantity and quality. The inside was clean and not busy at all, providing a very refreshing experience for the area. This place is an underrated gem in Fredericksburg, and I will definitely be coming again!

Google
This is really cool little fusion eatery in Fredericksburg Virginia. The menu is Latin/ Cajun inspired tacos, soups, and more. I had the Creamy Crab soup and Blackened Tuna tacos. Both were excellent. The flavors were bold, the food was seasoned well, and everything tasted fresh. If you are looking for something a little different, do yourself a solid and give them a try. Will return for sure!

Google
Bring your appetite! We've been frequenting Soup & Taco and Soup & Taco II for 15 years and never once have had a bad meal. This Mexican/Latin American restaurant has become one of our favorites in Fredericksburg. The Cream of Crab is a signature soup AND SECOND TO NONE! You won't go wrong with either black bean or chicken tortilla soup either. I'm not sure how they make the salsa, but it's incredible. WARNING the salsa and chips are addictive. Save room for the entrees! I've tried everything on this menu, and it doesn't disappoint. Tacos del Birria are my favorite (this month). The staff is the best. The owners are hard-working and extremely charitable within our community. Do yourself a favor and stop on in!

Decided to check them out as a family for dinner. Service was great and quick. Tried a few items from their appetizers menu and some soups (black bean and clam chowder). Everything was delicious. Definitely recommend it, and we will be back

Google
I have to say I was thinking it's just another hole in the wall place, but it's geniunely great mexican food. We've enjoyed the brisket tacos, shrimp salad, and few other items that were just wonderful. The flavors are great and the ingrediants are very fresh. This has become our goto place when craving a great taco or such.

Google
I love the tacos here! We ordered our food to go and enjoyed a margarita and a beer on the outside patio as we waited. They have very friendly staff and make a good drink. The food is terrific and filled with awesome flavor, yet simple and easy for a quick snack or a fulfilling lunch/dinner. The location seems perfect for walking from the UMW or from the downtown. It’s away from the crowds and across the street from Freddy Doughnuts. They have plenty of locals and foot traffic to make up for the lack of a parking lot. Inside is cozy and there is also a small bar. We preferred to sit outside under an umbrella and we had a puppy with us. This is a great local gem and I highly recommend a visit.

Google
Soup and Taco 2 es el amor amor de mi vida. If you want GREAT tacos de birria you have got to come here. I test other restaurants out but not a single one has compared. The flavor is delicious, it’s crunchy, it’s cheesy, the consome is chef’s kiss! Hands down favorite taco place, I would eat it everyday if I could.

Maria G.

Google
The black bean soup was delicious!! They brought chips and salsa which was really good too. They were really quick to bring out the food and everything was reasonably priced. I’ll definitely be back!

Yelp
A bit of a diner feel - also small and a little dark with a small bar. I wouldn't call it cozy at all. Margarita was just ok. Their food does taste like its homemade - I particularly liked their ground beef which had flavor and some kick, unlike other Mexican restaurants I've been to. Their chicken breast was good too. Service was attentive. Parking can be a challenge.
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Very small, unique restaurant. The food took time to prepare, which means it's fresh and homemade! I always love Mexican restaurants with actual rice and beans (not from a can!) delicious Mexican food, would definitely return!
google avatar

Yelp
How does this place have 3.7 stars? Love the yucca, steak and shrimp tacos, they do a good mole, great papusas. Staple spot for years. Only thing I don't like are their mixed drinks.

Yelp
Had dinner here tonight. The location is great and the restaurant has a quaint design and decor. Very well done inside, a truly relaxing dining experience. Had the beef empanada, birreia tacos, pumpkin flan, and tres leches. Exceptional food! By a very wide margin the best Latin American food I've experienced in the Fredericksburg area. Service was great and low pressure, which is very nice. Will return soon.

Angella W.

Yelp
The tortilla soup was thin. The tortilla strips were chewy. The chicken arepa was bland and the tortilla was chewy. Didn't like the salsa. The chips were cold. The parking difficult. The ambiance was dark and dingy. But the service was good and the food came out fast.

Yelp
It's downtown, but it's nothing earth shattering. If I'm in town, I would probably go again.

Yelp
Amazingly fresh food produced from a small kitchen where according to our server "the secret ingredient is love". No doubt. Pineapple Fritters were AMAZING!! Ancho Chile Lemonade was delicious! Fajitas (chicken) were plentiful (5 tenders of grilled chicken) and came stop a pile of grilled peppers and onions. The shredded beef enchilada was wrapped with a homemade corn tortilla and accompanied by a few mouthfuls of rice and homemade refried beans.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Very good. Had the fish tacos. Waitstaff were quick and very attentive. I would recommend.
google avatar

Kyle R.

Yelp
The food was alright. Not bad, but nothing I would recommend. Sad thing is the employees looked like they wanted to be anywhere but here and even more so wished the people eating here were also anywhere but here. After sharing this on Facebook, the owner to GREAT offense to the idea someone wouldn't think their restaurant wasn't perfect, and responded with a rambling post saying everything from they were super busy (they had zero people eating outside and only half the tables were taken inside), to give them a break because they are family owned (because you should be unfriendly it you are familly owned?) And they just got back from vacation. It was really sad.

Yelp
What a great place! Great atmosphere, great food, and great service! We were in a rush and the staff were very accommodating. Get the chorizo tacos, might be one of the best I've had! (Chips were fire too)

Brandon B.

Yelp
Good is delicious and great value. Incredible staff who remember regulars. Love this little place.

Julie V.

Yelp
Had a worst experience, I'm not sure if she was a server or manager. She is rude. She should not be in the business where she at now. She acted unprofessional, she wanted to fight with my 14 year old daughter because my daughter accidentally knocked over a glass of water while getting up from our table. This is insane, never been embarrassed and disrespectful in our entire life except last night because of your employee.
google avatar

Leah W.

Yelp
Best place in town to get pupusas!!! A simple and delicious place with great service.

Linda L.

Yelp
It was a bit quiet for a rainy Wed afternoon. But, the food and service were top notch. I'm not crazy about their cheese enchiladas anymore. I think they switched the cheese to mozzarella (?)... so I tried the blacked tuna tacos. Definitely a keeper, even though it was on their "Specials" menu. Will definitely keep it on my rotation for lunches.

Yelp
Nice place, we tried Tacos de Birrias and it was delicious plus the customer service!!! Excellent place!!!

Yelp
Food was okay some of the waitress were super kind the others were sort of out of it! They did mess up one of the orders but besides that it was fine!!

Yelp
I came for lunch yesterday to meet up with a friend. My server was very nice, as my friend was 30 minutes late. She kept my chips and salsa filled, unfortunately. I ate an entire basket whilst waiting! Their chips are thicker than most restaurants and I love that! The salsa was a little spicier than anticipated, but delicious nonetheless! It was restaurant week and as I waited for my friend I went over the entire menu and asked questions. I finally decided I was going to get the two grilled chicken tacos and carnitas tacos for the special. My friend arrives at 3:01 pm and a server came over and took my menu and replaced it with the dinner menu. I was informed that the computers switch to dinner at 3, and I could take the dinner menu. I literally sat there for thirty minutes and all the servers stood around (there was only one other table) this whole time, and no one thought to tell me "if you want to order from the lunch menu you need to do so before 3"?? It's like when you go to a bar at happy hour, they tell you that special is over at whatever time happy hour ends! Nope! I got just the carnitas tacos, which were still good my friend got the crab stuffed shrimp with lemon caper sauce and white rice. My tacos were spicy, so I did have to get sour cream to cool them down, but they were fabulous! I docked the one star just due to common courtesy I was not extended. Other than that, I will definitely come back! The employees were nice and patient, and food was amazing!

Yelp
I ordered papusas for lunch. They were delicious and filling (although only an appetizer) and chips were endless. It was a nice quiet place to have lunch. Can't wait to go back and try more items!

Michelle O.

Yelp
Split a chile relleno and tortilla soup with my mom. The soup was very good, relleno had to have meat in it according to our servers which is atypical of the real thing so we ordered the carnitas version which was pretty good. The salsa was very good -had a distinctive toasted flavor. Margies were just ok. First ones (805 something) were creatively made but overly sweet. Cadillac margies had too much mixer. We had 4 other family members with us so a big group ordering a lot of food and drink from this place. Ok now here is why I gave this place only 2 stars........the SERVICE!! There were two Mexican women serving our table. Sullen as could be! They acted like they were doing us a favor to do their damn job. So pouty. Had to ask to get the salsa refilled each time and they acted like it was a huge bother each time. We were a pleasant and cheerful group in spite of this. My east coast family goes here all the time but my husband and I who were visiting have to wonder why?? Never again for us!

Yelp
And In Conclusion.... Stopped by here when driving through. Everything was great. Loved the Pineapple Fritter appetizer. My favorite is seafood enchiladas so their Chipotle Shrimp Enchilada entree did not disappoint.

Chris V.

Yelp
I have never been more disrespected as a guest at a restaurant ever. I love this restaurant, we go all the time. So I will admit guilt, I vaped at the table outdoors, but never blew near anyone especially near the guests or the baby at the table next to us, because I understand since we have kids too. But your server took it to a new level. I apologized to everyone outside at the table. but that wasn't enough for her. She continued to berate me and my wife and kids, it was beyond rude and embarrassing. She made my wife cry, then as we were leaving my daughter hit the table by accident while getting up and the water spilled because we were in such disbelief of what was happening and she wanted to fight my 14 year old daughter. The rest of the staff is great, but this server was beyond unhinged, she also could have been either drunk or high. Completely unacceptable. I'm literally at a loss for words for what happened this evening.

Yelp
Tacos are one of my favorite foods so when I saw the name soup and TACO, I knew I definitely had to go. I went a little after the dinner rush, but the parking lot was still full - I had to park on the street a little further down. However, when I walked in, it was not as busy as the parking lot made it out to be. They brought out fresh chips (still hot) and salsa which my date could not get enough of. Before deciding on food, I ordered a strawberry mojito which I thought was super good; it was sweet and had a strong strawberry flavor. Be warned, if you don't like sweet drinks, don't get this one. They had a special where you can get 2 tacos and a bowl of soup for around $8.50 so my choice was made. I got 2 carnitas tacos and a cup of sopa de tortilla (tortilla soup). The soup had bits of chicken, corn, cheese cubes, and avocado topped with tortilla strips. I thought it had really good balance and each spoonful had a different combination of flavors. I was bummed when all the tortilla strips ran out until I remembered there was a basket of tortilla chips on our table; pro tip: break them and add them to your soup if you want an extra crunch! We also got the yuca fries served with a jalapeno mayo. These were steaming hot and the perfect addition to our meal. I've had yuca fries before, but really enjoyed this dipping sauce with it. By the time our tacos came out, I was ready to dig in (and forgot to take a picture of them). My carnitas tacos came with cilantro, onions, avocado, and crunchy fried potatoes. I usually love onions, but the ones on these tacos were a little bit too overpowering; maybe it was because of the variety they used or because they were diced too largely. The fried potatoes made this taco really unique. They were little squares that added an extra crunch to the taco which I enjoyed a lot. The service was just alright; it was sometimes hard to track down our server, but we were always able to ask whoever walked by.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in FXBG. I get the shrimp tacos w/ a side of queso almost weekly. If the crab soup is on special...get it! Their salsa is so good- it's smoky with a little heat. So fresh and delicious. I like this location the best because there's outside seating and it's a bigger restaurant. Definitely give them a try!

Yelp
The Soup and Taco 2 is pretty good and basically tastes the same as Soup and Taco on Caroline Street. It has a nice warm environment with a friendly staff. It is more spacious than Soup and Taco on Caroline St. However, the food taste the same and has the same good quality. We also had great customer service. As the one on Caroline, you are brought chips and salsa to the table to start. Both the chips and salsa were good. My only small complaint is that the chips do not have a natural tortilla chip taste, they taste slightly like the oil they are cooked in. The chips are thick and not thin and that's fine but they seem heavy as far as taste because of the oil. They aren't greasy but it's just this slight taste. You can still eat the chip just be aware. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Burrito and my husband ordered the Grilled Chicken Enchiladas. Both meals came with rice and beans. Both meals were good and the chicken was good on both meals. My burrito had sour cream, gauc, and lettuce on the inside besides the chicken so it gave it more flavor and wasn't dry. I also had queso and salsa on top as well. My husband's Enchiladas were good but there was nothing on the inside besides chicken. It had a sauce on top but in my opinion the over all enchilada tasted dry like it was missing something. Taste wise the food is pretty good besides the pointers I listed above and seasoned well. The rice and beans are good just like they are at the one on Caroline. Overall, Soup and Taco 2 is good and has a friendly staff. If the one on Caroline is crowded definitely don't be afraid to try the one on Williams. It's the same good quality and taste with a great staff.

Yelp
We love their grilled veggie tacos & their mango gazpacho is so good! Great customer service & also willing to make some items vegan for my husband.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
BEST homemade drinks EVER! We always love everything we have to eat and drink here. Thank you Soup and Taco 2!
google avatar

Aaron A.

Yelp
It's change your life good! The black bean soup is AMAZING. Really haven't had a bad meal yet - easily one of the best spots in Fredericksburg to eat.
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
Birria tacos and carne asado tacos are so good. Robert, the waiter is always attentive and very nice. We usually try their specials and it's always fresh and delicious. The churros and tres leches are also worth a try.
google avatar

Carla R.

Yelp
We had the yucca fries (served very hot!) steak burrito and taco salad. We both were stuffed with leftovers to take home. The service was very very fast, and the food was delicious! All together with a mixed drink, our tab was only $39. A cozy place for comfort food on a rainy Saturday night. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
Great food with "amazing flavors". The four of us enjoyed the drinks on Cinco de Mayo. The joint was really busy but the staff worked really hard to keep up with the crowd. We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Brittany D.

Yelp
Very enjoyable experience. Good food and friendly staff. We will definitely be back. Right now it appears they're busy with take out orders and not so much dine-in. We felt a bit rushed but also the staff were hustling which we can appreciate. I think this place would have a line out the door if they improved the indoor ambiance a bit, but either way well worth the visit.
google avatar

Lavender T.

Yelp
It was just okay. I had two taco special, chorizo (hot) meat was a little dry and cauliflower taco was very good. However I didn't like the addition of the pineapple. Beans and rice were tasty. Overall it was just ok. I would like to try a different option if I go back again. I also wasn't a fan of their chips and salsa.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Not so good, but I guess if you're not used to good Mexican food you would probably think it was good. Me I really know my Mexican food and then after eating my daughter and I were talking and we are like this is not Mexican food so,we politely asked the server,ma'am is this Mexican food and she replied well we are Salvadoran so I'm like I knew something wasn't right. So needless to say I probably will not be going back here. Oh,the pinto beans were really cooked well but I asked for refried beans and these were whole. It was nice that they did bring out a slice of cake with whipped cream and a candle for my husband,it was his birthday today. I was just thinking the tortillas were like they just took them out of a pack not even heated and threw the tacos together, who doesn't heat a tortilla before making a taco. The steak taco I ordered had no seasoning, I don't think it even had salt and pepper, and it was cut in cubes which is good but they must've cooked it that way which made it so tough. My opinion if you're going to make steak tacos cook the steak whole then chop it,it comes out much more tender and please heat them tortillas. Asked for a hotter sauce and they replied that's the only one we have besides a green sauce. So if you eat there make sure you ask for heated tortillas

Yelp
Underwhelming and blah. I had really high hopes for this place because I had heard from other people that it was good but that was definitely not the case. This location is on a fairly busy street near the college, so parking can be difficult. The restaurant itself is colorful with the typical "Mexican decor", papel picado, piñatas, etc. My bf & I were greeted and seated immediately, although our waiter seemed like he wanted to be anywhere but there. We ordered 2 orders of beef empanadas to start. The empanadas are relatively expensive for only 2. The beef filling reminded me of the meat from Taco Bell. Not impressed at all. For the main meal, I ordered carnitas tacos and my bf ordered a steak burrito with beans and rice. My carnitas tacos came out with a decent amount of meat, but also an overwhelming amount of cilantro. I asked the waiter for some limes for the tacos and he brought me 2 tiny wedges, definitely not enough to make up for the lack of flavor in the tacos. The meat was very moist, but had zero flavor. My bf enjoyed his burrito but didn't like the beans and rice. The rice was bland, with no flavor at all. All in all, definitely not what I was expecting. I was hoping for much more. Will definitely not return.

Yelp
The wonderful team here accommodated our party of 12+ following a graduation at Quantico. Overall, they made a great effort to serve us. The outdoor seating was nice. On to the food. The soup of the day, in this case Cream of Crab, was delicious, fresh, and obviously home made. Those that chose it could stop raving about it. I had the shrimp avocado salad as an entre', and enjoyed the flavors, The shrimp was in a cornmeal coating, over an avocado, greens, and sprinkled with tomato, corn, and onion. The dressing was suitably spicy, with a bit of cayenne and cumin, I believe. The iced tea I had was brewed, I would guess. The steak fajita was the most impressive I've seen, with large strips of a quality steak. Hammered by my brother big-time. The chimichanga was reportedly a bit spicy, with jalapeno pieces. My granddaughter loved her quesadilla. The chips and salsa were very fresh. The chips had a nice corn flavor. The pico/salsa was just spicy enough. Stole some guacamole from others and found it well balanced and tasty. Overall, we would stop here again.

Dustin L.

Yelp
I am an out of town diner and this place took me by surprise. I had the tacos de birria. I loved the shredded beef. My wife gave me one of her chicken empanadas. I wasn't dissatisfied or disappointed at any moment. The bathroom smells like mangoes also.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the crab soup it was good spicy! Tammy had tacos they where good and meaty! Over all really good we walk here from town it was fun!

paul d.

Yelp
Awesome spot for lunch. Took my son and he had beef tacos that he loved and I enjoyed some spicy creamy crab soup and shrimp tacos. Traditional tortilla chips with house salsa to get things started. Great flavor, food served quickly, fresh & piping hot! Service was fantastic too. They had a great Sunday brunch menu but we knew what we wanted. Next time will explore menu a little more.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in for a quick bite for lunch, was seated promptly. Food was delicious. I had the chicken chimichanga. Nice cozy atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
The real deal! They make thier own tortilla chips, the guacamole is super fresh and sooo good, the staff is extremely friendly and fun to talk to. I also got a steak burrito to go and it came with beans and rice which i dont usually care for but it was delicious! Im stuffed and it was less expensive than chipotle so i will be back for sure!
google avatar

Cathy N.

Yelp
I loved the warm environment, and all the workers there were so welcoming! There was one moment where I was being goofy and dancing to a song that came on, and a couple of servers joined me! I loved it! It's a lot more spacious than the Soup and Taco on Caroline St., and the store is decked out for Christmas!! The food is amazing! I got the Chicken Tortilla Soup and Steak Tacos; both are highly recommended! One of my friends got the Cubano, and he thought it was delicious! Definitely coming back this week!

Yelp
I really have tried to like this place, I enjoyed the original location and this place has better parking but there seems to be something wrong with the food each time I visit. I've gone 4 times now, and try and give them the benefit of the doubt but tonight was just beyond what I can forgive. On a good note, as usual, black been soup was excellent, they do that well. I tried the carne asada tonight, it's my favorite at the other spot. The smell of the meat was off, way off. The meat smelled and tasted rancid. I asked the waiter to please check with the chef because the smell was so off. The chef insisted this was the way it's supposed to smell. I disagree, not only because I have had their carne asada at the other location but also because I'm familiar with the smell of rancid meat. I was a USDA food inspector for several years and I'm very familiar with what meat is supposed to smell and taste like. I did not make a scene and even left a decent tip. The manager should at the very least removed the plate from the table when he realized I was NOT going to eat it despite the chefs insistence that it was fine. I'm sorry guys, I don't like to give poor reviews but you earned this 2 star rating whole heartedly. The waitress was attentive and can't be blamed for the poor quality of the steak or the managers reaction to me so she helped boost this rating to 2 star for you guys.

Yelp
Stick to the original location in the heart of downtown. I've given this place 2 chances and it has disappointed both times. There is no consistency to how items are cooked between both locations. The original soup and taco is great. This second location, although more spacious, is garbage. I had the 2 taco special, 1 carne asada and 1 carnitas. The carne asada was bland and had a white queso sauce that the original location doesnt use, but doesnt need to because their carne asada is good. And the carnitas tasted more like boiled and shredded meat. Not at all like carnitas. The only thing I ordered that i wasn't completely disappointed in was my Corona. I will not be visiting this location again.

Jodi M.

Yelp
Absolutely the rudest people! I told the waitress no guacamole and my food had it on it.. she didn't come back soon enough so I put it on the plate. Got my bill and was charged for it. I told her I said no when she asked if I wanted it she proceeded to say I did order it and then said I should have told her.. when my bill came she charged me anyway. The people at my table heard me tell her no!

Sean D.

Yelp
My whole family did not like it. I can say homemade is better. And I mean old El paso.

Diana L.

Yelp
I love Soup and Taco, and have visited Soup and Taco 2 many times for a not as good as meal but this last visit, March 10th, will be last visit. Let's start with the chips and salsa, salsa was amazing but chips were soggy. My husband order the carnitas tacos were bland and just tasted off. I had my regular fish taco which wasn't great. We won't visit this location again but we will go back to the original location!

Tammy C.

Yelp
We had been at one restaurant and I didn't eat much there. So as we were walking back I mentioned let's stop for a taco. Went in and saw that there was a two taco with soup or beans and rice. I know I said I want to order that please. I have to say the tacos were great and the crab soup was good. When I received the bill I saw that they charged me for 2 Tacos and a cup of soup. They charged me $3.50 each for tacos and $4.95 for soup. I wasn't thinking about it at the time until later on after we left. I am disappointed on the charge for they know there's this item on the menu. I noticed also on the two paper menus that a couple prices where there was a $1.00 difference on one paper menu verus the other menu. I will go to the original Soup and Taco but not to this one. I feel that they know their menu prices and could've charged me at the price of what I thought I ordered. Lesson learned on checking on the prices of the bill and say something.

Raymond W.

Yelp
Tacos were great. Worst margarita I've ever had. Zero alcohol. Stick with beer if you go here.

Maggie K.

Yelp
This location has more seating, but Soup and Taco on Caroline St. had better food. I had the tacos with grilled vegetables, and they weren't bad but they weren't great either. The fried ice cream on the other hand was wonderful. Which I was really happy about because the last 3-4 Mexican restaurants disappointed me. I'll most likely come back for it. And maybe I'll try other food on the menu and find something better.
