The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Bend, Oregon | Eater Portland

"The Sparrow Bakery in Northwest Crossing is worth the trip from any part of town. Its exceptional breads and pastries grace the tables of some of Bend’s finest restaurants. Visitors get messy fingers when arugula oil drips from the breakfast sandwich stacked on a flaky Sparrow croissant or savor the croque monsieur on homemade brioche and lox-topped bagels. But the star here is the famed Ocean Roll — a marvel of rolled pasty infused with cardamom vanilla sugar that’s best experienced fresh at the bakery. For those in a hurry, bakery items are available at an outside customer pickup window, bypassing the indoor queue. The bakery is open for takeout orders and pre-ordered delivery." - Barb Gonzalez

20 Exceptional Restaurants in Bend, Oregon

"While the Sparrow bakery has opened a location in Portland, the Northwest Crossing location is now the only one in Bend. Visitors get messy fingers when arugula oil drips from the breakfast sandwich stacked on a flaky Sparrow croissant. Other savory sandwiches on Sparrow bread include the croque monsieur on brioche and lox-topped bagels, but the stars here are the pastries. Don’t miss the famous ocean roll, a flaky laminated pastry layered with cardamom vanilla sugar that is best eaten fresh at the bakery." - Barb Gonzalez, Jeffrey Stull

This U.S. Winter Destination Flies Surprisingly Under the Radar — With Great Breweries and One of the Best Ski Mountains in the West

"The day after I skied, I started my morning with a trip to Sparrow Bakery’s airy northwest location to try its signature pastry: the Ocean Roll, a spiral of flaky, sugary puff pastry with a cardamom-vanilla filling that sent my stoke-o-meter off the charts." - Travel + Leisure Editors

My 2nd time in Bend and this place is a must! The food is so good and the treats even better. This time I got the lemon tart, but last time I got the chocolate caramel one and it has lived on in my memory ever since. I want to try their drinks soon as well. The coffee is strong and flavorful. 10 out of 10

This bakery opens at 8 AM, and by the time we arrived around 8:10 AM on a Sunday, there was already a line for orders and a few tables were taken. So, if you're on a tight schedule, I’d recommend coming as early as possible. We ordered the Ocean Roll, both bacon and non-bacon sandwiches, and a cappuccino. The coffee took a while to be served, so keep that in mind if you're in a rush. The sandwiches were good, and the croissant was fresh and flaky — though a little seasoning on the avocado would have made it better. I didn’t personally enjoy the Ocean Roll, but my husband liked it. It was fresh with a sweet, subtle cardamom and cinnamon flavor. The place itself is cozy and beautiful, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

The food is as good as they say it is, the ocean roll and coffee are really great, and the breakfast sandwich with arugula aioli is almost an experience on par with eating mac and cheese for the first time. Service is astoundingly fast for how much business and orders they take, went on a Saturday morning during a concert series and this place was pumping stuff out. Phenomenal. This place has a great look, and is great to meet up with friends or family, and there are dogs all around the place if you enjoy the puppy pals.

It could not have been any worse. I hardly ever write negative reviews about local businesses, but this one really annoyed me. We were brought to Sparrow Bakery by people who had spoken highly of it. There was even a line out the door and lots of people seeming to enjoy their food. I walk in with my family to look at the menu and am taken back by the prices. I wanted to wait until I had had a chance to dine here to see if they were justified, sometimes portions can be large. We order our meal which was a bagel w/ lox, seasonal fruit cup, and poblano breakfast muffin and wait. 15 minutes go by and still no food, although others in our group had gotten theirs. We ask a girl behind the counter who says it is being made right now. According to her, "The fruit bowl is being prepared fresh for us." Another 15 minutes go by and still no food. I go to ask her again and now with an attitude she says they lost our ticket. She offers to make our food now and to refund it but says it will take 5-10 minutes. Within 2 minutes this pathetic little cup of fruit is brought out in a coffee cup. I attached the photo in case you wonder what $8 will get you here. I have seen better presentation on an airplane. Then the food finally comes out, pretty sure my sandwiched was microwaved 30 seconds before as it had the chewiness of a leather glove. The bagel and lox had pickled onions on it, as if we were having tacos or something. The same girl brought our food and could not have been ruder. Not a single ounce of remorse. I don't know if she was having a bad day, but it was some of the worst customer service I have seen. Even if it had come on time, the value is just not there. I am sure people will keep buying it though. Just not me.

Popped in to see what all the hype is about. What's this whole "Ocean Roll" thing?🤷🏼‍♂️ Got mine to go cause I don't got time to sit around with all you people! Well... Well it's pretty awesome. It's like a croissant and a cinnamon roll had a baby in an East Indian spice market! 🤯This one item could be your whole business plan. Maybe it is? I'll probably never know cause every time I come back I'll be getting the same thing, "Ocean Roll please" 🙏🏻💥🙌🏼. Sooooo good 😋😋😋!

Dynamic duos. Peanut butter and jelly, Lennon and McCartney, Han Solo and Chewbacca, Jordan and Pippen, Scooby-Doo and Shaggy, Will Ferrell and anyone. Sure they’re pretty special on their own, but pair them with their “bestie” and they are instantly elevated to another stratosphere. Following in the footsteps of those legends, Sparrow Bakery has assembled its own mighty duo by pairing its venerable lineup of coffee/tea offerings with a bakery selection worthy of completing the other half of this dance card. Freshnesses is a theme that spans across the entirety of their menu and our favorite coffee/tea selections included their “Cardamom Latte”, “Caramel Latte”, and “Chai Latte.” Our favorite bakery selections included their “Ocean Roll”, “Cinnamon Knot”, “Ham, Thyme, and Gruyere Croissant”, award winning “Bacon Breakfast Sandwich”, and “Lox-Bagel.” If you’re feelin’ a shareable vibe we’d recommend their “French Toast Sticks” which lend themselves well to a family style dining experience. There is frequently a line out the door, but their entirely separate “Express” window is a convenient alternative if you’re making a quick coffee and/or baked goods run. And that’s…Henry’s Take. #dynamicduos #sparrowbakerybend Photo credits 📸 @danavoros and @j_alexandra89

Yummy!!!!! I come here for a sweet treat the macarons, tarts or the ocean roll are never a miss. Their sandwiches are also fabulous. I’ve tried all of them. My favorite is the bacon breakfast sandwich. It is well balanced and definitely something I crave. The prices aren’t the lowest but for bend they are about on point.

Love, love, love this place! The food is always excellent and the bakery treats are delectable. They make wonderful beverages, too. We often come for a fancy coffee and a sweet treat, but our most recent visit was for a late lunch. The helpings are large; a to-go box was needed for both of us. We visit whenever we're in town, although we'll make the drive for that perfect coffee and pastry combination.
