"Washington City Paper reports that Mandalay owners Aung Myint and his mother, Hla Hme — who is also the chef at the long-standing Southeast Asian restaurant — are transforming the two-story building formerly occupied by the Spice & Tea Exchange (1069 Wisconsin Avenue NW) into the first of what could be many salad-focused eateries." - Warren Rojas

A great place to find less commonly available spices and interesting spice mixes, but they are pretty expensive (I took off a star for the prices/value). You can smell all the spices before choosing, which is really nice, and the service has been great each time we've gone! We've had great experiences with a number of their spice mixes, which are good time and energy savers. They're great for cooking quick, easy weeknight meals! Some of my favorites are: Ginger Teriyaki Spice Blend on salmon, Espresso Steak Rub or Backwoods Hickory Rub on steak, and Smoked BBQ Rub on steak or pork. We probably won't be buying our spices here regularly, as it's a bit too expensive. However, we'll definitely stop in occasionally to pick-up some of their spice blends (and truffle salt). If you're in the area, I'd recommend giving them a try!

This place is a gem. If you enjoy cooking, drinking tea or simply using your sense of smell, this place is a must visit. On my first visit, I bought one bag of tea for what seemed at the time a pretty steep price of $5.75. Hell, I thought, I can buy a 20 pack of lipton for like two bucks. Well I was wrong. I enjoyed a cup of the tea every morning that week and had barely made a dent in the bag. I'll easily get a good 15-20 cups out of the one 1-oz bag. That comes out to about $25 cents per cup -- which tastes, and is priced, way better than Starbucks. But the real value of the tea is the flavor and the scent. The complex flavors have turned my morning cup of tea into a ritual that I look forward to getting out of bed to enjoy. I really can't recommend enough.

This store has a great selection of spices, including custom spice blends. It does also have a more limited selection of tea. The people who work here are very pleasant and are happy to answer questions about their stock.

Many of the spices and teas are very nice. I only vote 4 stars because the prices are rather high imo
