I lived at The Standard for 3 years. The only reason I stayed is because of the convenience of the gym (that is literally the only reason because to me the gym matters a ton). Other than that, if you don't have money to waste, DO NOT MOVE HERE. The following are just a few of my negative experiences:
1. Move in day, my move in time was 1PM, but the process was so inefficient and poorly thought-out, that I wasn't able to move in until 6PM. The instructions they gave us involved me waiting in line in my car for 5 hours. For a company that has had tons of experience with opening buildings and moving residents, in, they sure created the worst move-in process I've ever seen or experienced.
2. The door to the balcony's hinges were too weak for how heavy the door is, and the wind blew the door open, causing the hinges to break, and the door to be permanently stuck in an open position. At the same time, the AC broke. This was the middle of summer. I had bugs and dust flying in, the humidity and heat, and NO AC. And they didn't fix the door for 2-3 months, and the AC for around 4 months. By the time they got the AC fixed, it was already getting cold inside. And because of the door, there was a layer of dust on everything in the kitchen and living room, which I had to clean myself. They kept using the excuse that "parts are taking long to ship," but I don't think that's a proper reason. What parts take A MONTH to ship? As far as I'm concerned, the city of Ann Arbor requires large maintenance issues (like AC or doors to the outside) to be fixed within 1-2 weeks, but the Standard staff knows that us students don't have the time or money to sue or get legal involvement. I asked if I could get a refund of some sort or if they could install a wall or window unit. They refused. They offered for me to stay in a different apartment temporarily, but I had somewhere to stay already, so that was useless.
3. For the first year I lived in a studio apartment in front of the trash room, which normally would be fine. Except for a few weeks here and there, they'd let the trash pile up outside of the trash room and right up to my door. I had to move bags out of the way to access my room. When I complained to the front desk, they blamed it on the city and asked if I had a solution... like isn't your job to find a solution on where to put the trash? It's definitely a safety hazard to have trash leaking out into my apartment.
4. For the first year, they overcharged my heating in the winter. And multiple other people on my floor also experienced the same. I even kept my room at 60 at some points just to reduce the heating cost, and they still charged me 400-500 a month, just for the heating bill. They never returned the money.
5. There were cars constantly parking in the spot that I pay monthly for, and when I contacted the tow company, the number went to nowhere. I continuously asked the front desk if they could install more signs to tell people not to park in my spot, but they refused.
6. They entered my bedroom without giving me 24 hour notice and worked with the dry-wall, which left dust everywhere on my bed and floor, which I had to clean.
7. When I moved from my studio to a 4-bedroom unit, they kept pushing back my move-in date ON THE DAY OF. No notice, just me going down to the front desk and asking if today was still my move-in day, and them continuously saying "no you can move in tomorrow." Then when I moved in, nothing was cleaned. There was just one guy staying late at 11PM, cleaning only my room. And the cleaning guy specifically said that the front desk staff instructed him to ONLY clean my room. He offered to clean the kitchen and living room, but I said it was fine because it was so late and I felt bad for him (none of this was his fault), and I cleaned everything myself.
8. My car got broken into twice in the parking garage. I reported it twice with no response or call back. And the garage doors are constantly broken, which is dangerous since that area has a high concentration of homeless people.
