Went here twice for lunch. Overall experience was very pleasant, though the prices are on the higher side. Ordered the ox cheek, lamb, Yorkshire pudding, scallops with some desserts and drinks. We all enjoyed the flavours and quality of food we had received, and some allergies noted were taken seriously by the staff here. Location is beautiful, and it's wonderful sitting in a classy dining room with a lot of natural light while enjoying a nice meal with family and friends. Only thing we did not enjoy as much was the steak, but everything else made our holiday very special.

Always arrange to visit when in York with work, we always have a good time. Very relaxed vibe and the staff are always good. Food was excellent, and drinks good also. Not to keen on the squid ink risotto served with the scallops, but other than that very enjoyable.

Google
Food was amazing! We had the steak and ale pudding, fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding - simply amazing. Our nine year old was along and raved about the fish and chips. Friendly staff, with great beer recommendations to go with the food. Child friendly environment and meals!

Came here for an evening meal. As we were in a larger group we had to have a set menu. The restaurant was busy, the food was good and service was ok. The main dish was smaller than we expected and the dessert was cold and hard, it could have been served warm. The portion sizes could be slightly larger and speed of service could be improved.

Google
Fab location and our waitress, Deebida, was so nice. Our starter was Pheasant, and while tasty, it was tough and dry. Mains were Duck leg, which was fab, and chicken Schnitzel, which was just OK, a little dry and lacking flavor. Cocktails are lovely and the setting is fab. Will I be back, no. But happy to have gone.

Amazing food and great atmosphere. We ordered ox cheek and chicken as mains. They were both delicious

Google
A good restaurant, one of the best by the river. Busy, great atmosphere, great outdoor seating fkr summer, beautiful views. Staff attentive and helpful. Food was good but I was expecting more. Came a tad too fast and therefore not the best but not bad. My chicken snitznel was a large piece but chicken over cooked and vegetables went cold very quickly. Shame

Google
While everything was nice about our evening, good service and a nice feel to the place, the food was disappointing for the price point. There was nothing wrong with it, it tasted nice and was nicely presented but the portions are fairly small and the quality was nothing special. Most mains are around £25 and someone in my party ordered a Yorkshire pudding starter which was £9 for a Yorkshire pudding in gravy? Overall nice experience but not worth the cost for average food

Yelp
Walked in without reservation and got nice table in a second. The host/server who seated us told me that they celebrate 10 anniversary of the restaurant that week. Huge restaurant, they warned me 2 toilets broken and there's only 1 left but I never had issue and never needed to wait in line. Service is pretty quick, quite big menu. It's a place you want to go to try their Yorkshire pudding ( in York lol) big spacious place and since it's weekday and I came after rush dinner hour, not all table are full The superstar of the day is ox cheek. It so tender and just melt in your mouth

Yelp
Amazing meal with delicious cocktails and good service. I understand why this restaurant was noticed by the Michelin guide Can't speak highly enough of this dining experience. From beginning to end it was really fantastic. Ordered the smoke old fashioned that was beautiful and complex and smoky. For my started i had the scallops that were plump with garnishes that really brought out the flavors. For my main, I had the maple bacon pork that was really moist and tender. I'll definitely have to come back and try everything else on the menu!

Yelp
The view was pretty on the river terrace... we ordered the cauliflower buffalo sandwich- I liked it okay but not a lot of flavor ... the spicy chilli margarita was good and the loaf and butter was very good! We got dessert with ice cream and like pumpkin ginger bread - I liked it a lot ... overall I enjoyed the food a lot - my daughter was not a fan and service was a bit slow

Yelp
This pub/restaurant place is quite comfy and it is nestled by the river with a large seated open area with tables and chairs with outdoor heating if it's chilly. We four sat on this decking watching the river life and benefitted from sunshine until a splash of rain interrupted our enjoyment but only for a little while. The beers were darn good and our ladies enjoyed their wine. The service was excellent and staff most polite. Our round of four drinks was over £35 as a service charge was automatically added, which I really dislike. I should be asked if I wish to add a tip. And I don't accept that it's acceptable because it might be printed on a menu. As it was, I did tip over and above the added charge as I felt the servers deserved it and to the credit of the barman I was paying he pointed out that the service charge was already included when I told him the additional amount I wanted to add. So at £35 a round for four before I added my additional sum it's way much more pricy than the other three pubs I've reviewed in York that are not very far from this place. In truth if I return to York I likely wouldn't return as it's overpriced before the service charge is added and most annoyingly it's automatically added. The decking ain't worth the premium pricing tested against quirky the trembling madness pub and the wonderfully rude staff at the idiosyncratic Kings Arms.

Yelp
Quite happy with this place - though not blown away and unclear if I'd make it a point to return. Most dishes were solid. I particularly liked the seared scallops appetizer (though wish it came with more than 2 medium sized ones) and the wild halibut main (which was on special that evening). The cured salmon appetizer was ok but I wouldn't reorder. The pheasant main was good - though more if you like sweet with your poultry (due to the boozy prunes). The desert was ok and the sourdough bread was enjoyable. I felt the cocktails, while pretty, were a bit of a disappointment (in terms of taste). Staff were friendly but not particularly attentive or reactive. Overall, I'd classify the service as satisfactory.

Yelp
We visited The City restaurant during our visit to York and it was amazing. I loved trying the famous Yorkshire pudding here in York - it was extremely delicious. My husband and I opted for the aged ribeye for two from their specials menu and it was one of the best steaks we've ever eaten. My husband is a big snob when it comes to steaks so the fact that he loved it was a high praise. We finished our meal with the apricot Melba dessert and we enjoyed it just as much- it had a perfect combination of sweet and savory notes. This place definitely deserves it's Michelin star.

Yelp
It was fine...the cocktails are pricy. We got a cauliflower sandwich that was a bit unevenly flavored...imo par for the course with veg food. The starter & view were great tho!

Yelp
We ate here on Christmas Eve evening, with a reservation for 2 at 7.15pm. On arrival, we waited for a few minutes before being seated. The restaurant seemed quite large and was very nicely decorated. The ambiance was quite classy, yet relaxed and rustic. Our order was taken shortly after we were seated. We started with the scallops and the partridge, followed by the beef fillet and the pheasant. For dessert we had the egg nog custard tart and the baked Alaska. All in all, we had a very nice evening. The food was a little underwhelming in places and didn't quite match the ambiance of the restaurant, unfortunately.

Yelp
Came here for lunch while visiting the train museum. Amazing food. I really enjoyed my salmon appetizer and a 0% beer.

Yelp
My mom and I spent our last night in York at Star Inn and, in comparison to the first Inn dining experience we had, the service and food were lackluster or unpalatable: we were seated right next to a cabinet and half our musical ambiance consisted of the clanking and rearrangement of silverware and our neighbors' alta voce conversation. The only positive of our experience was the view offered by the location. I will not be going back.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on our recent trip to York and was very impressed and happy with our experience. We made advance reservations, and although it didn't seem to be terribly crowded, we got a fine window table that had great views of the park. Service was friendly and the dining area is tastefully decorated without being stuffy. It didn't seem to require too much dressing up, but at the same time this is a nice space for having a special dinner as well. Between the three of us, we tried: Celebration of Yorkshire Rhubarb Menu (£40), which included: - Slingsby Rhubarb Gin-cured Salmon 'Gravadlax' style - Pan-fried duck w/ poached rhubarb - Yorkshire Rhubarb custard slice Pinot Noir-braised ox cheek w/ smoked parsnip mash (£19) Toad in the Hole (£14) Rhubarb crumble (£6) Everything was fantastic and you could taste the freshness and perfect amount of seasoning. The rhubarb menu was great since it definitely highlighted local rhubarb in delicious ways (and I had never had rhubarb in anything other than a strawberry/rhubarb type dessert). The portions were very sizeable, and well worth the price.

Yelp
Imagine finding myself meeting two new friends in York at a little pub. They invited us to go to the Star Inn the City. It was a short walk across the bridge. This restaurant has a warm lovely bar, a beautiful inning room and an outdoor seating area. As a visitor to York, I was enchanted to see a brace of pheasants hanging by the kitchen door. (Later to be my dinner). The food was great and the atmosphere could not have even more "York" we will surely come back when we are there next time.

Yelp
My Birthday weekend in York came to a close with a lovely meal at The Star Inn The City. A lovely restaurant right by the river, this was such an excellent place to visit. The large restaurant has high floor to ceiling windows which adds for excellent views of the river on one side and gardens on the other. We ordered warm bread and butter as a nibble and then i ordered muscles for a starter. These were fresh and the sauce which accompanied them was salty, yet flavoursome. I stuck with the fish theme and ordered a scampi and salmon dish for my main course. This too was excellent! I would come here again when in York and have recommended this place many times to friends since my visit!

Yelp
We went to 'Star' having received some very good recommendations and largely it really did live up to its billing. Situated just outside the castle walls and about 5-10 mins walk from the Minster, this fine food house is definitely on the more pricey side but without a hint of pretentiousness. Situated in a lovely old building with a large attached conservatory dining room, the tables are nicely spread out to not make it too elbow to elbow with the next table but also still not so large as to be cavernous. The food is a giant British celebration with so many tempting choices that it was hard to narrow down what we wanted - but I finally went for the lamb rolled shoulder risotto and my wife had the slow cooked ox cheek (so so good!). The chips on the side were fantastic and I started with the vege option of Yorkshire puds with vege's (massive - but really tasty) The only slight disappointment was that we were going for my wife's birthday and even though I'd spoken to them twice in advance about preparing a birthday plate to be brought out after our 'mains' it failed to materialise - cue me having to pretend to nip to the loo to speak to the waiter around the corner to get it sorted - it all just seemed a bit rushed and dumped on the table which was a shame. 2 starters, 2 mains and a bottle of prosecco came to £100 without tip so definitely one for a special occasion.

Yelp
a posh gastropub with wit! Make sure you book well in advance. Amazing food and drinks.

Yelp
I wrote a review on another site and got a rude response from, whom I can only presume, was management. I originally gave them three stars out of five but reduced my review to one star, after their response. I've visited several times for coffee only but, on this occasion, I'd decided to treat myself despite the high prices. I really should've treated myself elsewhere. York is full of great pubs, cafes and restaurants. This one obviously gets away with murder due to its pretty location on the river and neighbouring the Museum Gardens. So, I'd complained about hard, overpoweringly vinegary tasting poached eggs, a sticky table that took two requests to get wiped (we even said we'd do it ourselves if they just gave us a cloth), an un-named server with strong B.O. and a tenner price tag for an espresso martini. In their response, I was told that I could've asked for the eggs remade (didn't have time), that the table was sticky cuz it was a busy Bank Holiday (I can't ever use that excuse in my barista job), that all prices are listed but that they simply won't 'engage' in discussions about prices cuz, well... I don't know their overheads (!!!), and that I'd "humilated" a member of their staff by mentioning his B.O. (who here wants their food served in that manner, please?). I was told, due to the B.O. comment, that I wouldn't be invited back. That's just horrendous customer service in my view. I can't imagine any of my bosses over the years ever answering a bad review in such a way. I'm a barista so I work in this type of industry and am horrified by this response. Please, given everything mentioned in my review, avoid this place. But do so moreso because their awful response highlights that they don't care about return custom as their site is prime real estate for charging tourists and day trippers OTT prices for a drink with a view and if they complain??? Tough. They probably won't be back anyway. Its such a shame, as it is a really pretty spot.

Yelp
Excellent lunchtime meal. Great service. Beautiful location. House-baked bread was outstanding. Definitely recommend.

Amy W.

Yelp
The staff were very friendly which all my family appreciated. The food was not quite to quality i was expecting of a Michelin star restaurant, they were serving burgers and fries that you could have got from five guys which seems ridiculous for a high end restaurant. The scallops that I were given had a lovely sauce but I thought £20 for 3 scallops was a bit overpriced, even if they were cooked beautifully.

Yelp
Confused by the other reviews. The food was simple and mostly deep fried. The staff were all pleasant and location is great. But felt more like an Olive Garden than anything. If you care about good food prepared well - go elsewhere.

Yelp
We went to Star after being recommended to go whilst on a short holiday in York. This is what comfortable fine dining should be. Set in a parkland but still right in the centre of the city; the atmosphere is bustling, the views are excellent, especially if you get one looking out onto the river. The food is as good as we have had in recent years, despite being initially overfaced with a huge started or Yorkshire pudding, I was quick to get over this and had three delicious courses and a bottle of wine recommended by our great waiter. Right in the centre of everything you'd want; if you're looking for pre or post dinner drinks you couldn't be better placed. Make sure you book in advance, it is unsurprisingly very busy and really not very expensive. A must try if you're in York. Final tip - check out the toilets, very funny signage on the doors!

Yelp
10 of us went for my parents 50th wedding anniversary, perfect location, excellent service and great food. We all had something totally different (not on purpose) and everyone thoroughly enjoyed. My rib eye was cooked to perfection and my wifes Monk Fish Scampi on a bed of coleslaw just melted in your mouth. Great food, great wine and great company.

Yelp
We loved our visit here for Sunday brunch. The roast beef and Yorkshire pudding were a hit. Really delicious chicken livers and onion rings. Fun experience-

Yelp
Nice place on Museum street! Ambiance is contemporary/eclectic. Nice decor, well crafted architectural elements. Lots of open space and high ceilings. Food was good. The flavors are mild and traditional, not necessarily complex. Simple recipes. I ordered the Traditional Yorkshire Pudding starter and the grouper. Both excellent. The banana and cheese pudding was excellent too! Service was great, with attention to details and very responsive. The waitress seemed to be well trained on serving basics (handling wine bottles, serving from the right side of the person, etc.) I would certainly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for good food in a comfortable ambiance.

Yelp
Very cute location with an upscale atmospherein the dining area. Not the place to show up to in the evening in jeans and a tshirt, more like slacks and blazer or sweater type place. The staff was very prompt and friendly. The food was great. We tried two different cuts of beef and both were cooked to perfection and had a smoky taste that was different in a good way. All in all a very good experience and a place I would return again.

Yelp
Came here for New Years eve dinner - for the price was dissapointing. THe menu tried to be quite impressive, but the dishes didn't really live up to the expectation. However, the ambience, setting and service was great!

Go R.

Yelp
We found this not up to its high billing. On a Sunday early evening they were understaffed and while waiter was friendly enough service was slow and perfunctory. However the catch of the day was really well prepared (sea bass pan seared with a fresh pea reduction) and they have great wine and ale selections. Though chicken dish a bit dry and if you're not a big meat eater you'll have trouble! Our bill for two plus wine and ale and tip was £62.

Yelp
As I had only drinks and a cheese platter, I cannot give higher than 3 stars. That being said, the Bloody Marys are amazing here, and the views are even better. We did have an issue in that the chef would not do a cheese plate before 12:30 pm, which seemed a bit of an arbitrary time. Get a seat on the patio and enjoy the great river view and people watching.

Yelp
A break from the more tired tourist-laden places in York, this restaurant succeeds in combining fresh local ingredients with creative recipes. Lots of pork on the menu, but I had the duck and loved it--just cooked enough but still tender and juicy. There's a great wine list and they always seem to be trying to expand the selection--even found some American wines here. Ambiance is so pleasant--right along the river and set in a park--plus smart, efficient, but not smarmy service. Make your reservations in advance for this place.
