The Best Gluten-Free Pizza in the Bay Area - Eater SF

Ordered the goddess salad and the deep dish Italian combo. The salad wasn’t tossed well and dressing seemed scarce. It certainly didn’t taste like pesto either so it was a bit disappointing. The deep dish tasted fine, but the crust was thick. Biting into the leftover the next day. You can see how much crust there is. It’s not a true deep dish. Overall, it was just okay. It didn’t blow us away.

Google
Oh yes! That Detroit-style pizza is brilliant! We've ordered delivery several times, and we'll definitely do it again! Every time, the taste and quality are fantastic! Great ingredients and a deliciously crispy crust! 🍕✨ I recommend it 100%!

Google
I went with a party /group of 13 people including children because we had great food and an awesome server named Airadina (spelling could be wrong). The roasted cauliflower was the highlight of dinner …you must order some! I guaranteed you will love eating them. The cheese bread is another favorite that was thick and had the right amount of cheese. We ordered 3 pizzas and still took home leftovers. Interesting, that you are able to select from three different thin, Detroit or Chicago style . We did the Detroit and thin pizzas…which were all a success. All the ingredients are fresh and not canned ( well they did not taste canned…lol) if you are looking for a back east tasting pizza this is the place to go!

Google
My husband and I searched everywhere for great deep-dish pizza in the Bay Area, and we finally found it! The crust is perfection—crispy & buttery just how you want it. Staff were super nice. Best freaking deep dish I ever ate.

Stopped by for a beer to watch a basketball game. The tap list was fair and the service was quick. There were lots of kids around and the place was very family friendly.

Definitely one of my favorite places for pizza. The salads a great too 🥗 🍕

Google
It all started well, our reservation for a party of 8 was ready and the first round of drinks were delivered promptly. We ordered and enjoyed a starter of Burrata and Garlic Crostini but the Garlic Cheese bread we ordered did not appear even though we requested the server check where it was. (It eventually appeared, with no apology, when we had almost finished eating the pizzas we ordered) My other criticism is that the server’s explanation of pizza sizes minimized the size of the pizzas. So yes, the pizzas tasted good, but we ended up taking a lot of uneaten pizza (and Garlic Bread) home to fill up the refrigerator for a few days.

Google
The Star on Grand nails that perfect balance of comfort and quality. Their deep-dish pizza is truly next level—flavorful, filling, and made with care. The crust is buttery and golden, and the toppings are always fresh and generous. The space has a laid-back, neighborhood feel, with friendly service that makes you want to come back. Whether you’re dining in with friends or grabbing takeout, it’s a go-to spot that never disappoints.

Yelp
Great food and service. We had half bbq chicken and half Cali, the best pizza I ever had. Definitely coming back for more.

Yelp
Their thin crust is the best pizza offered, in my humble opinion, out here. Might be some nostalgia but I don't recant my statement. Accent any of their za's with the green goddess salad and a root beer (chef's kiss) you've got a go-to meal. Service is good. Ambiance is casual but can be a slightly dressed up. Like iron your shirt and pants kind of deal.

Yelp
No wonder businesses are closing, the customer service is non-existent. I've been coming to Star since day 1. As a matter of fact The Star on Solano was the first restaurant to partner with me for my Grub Crawl. One of my good friends use to manage here. The food has always been consistent which is why we continue to support them. However I just sat for about 8 minutes with nary a greeting while I believe the manager took a call. Not 1 person bothered to say anything. Then after his call he came to tell me I could order my togo at the counter. Didn't bother to see if maybe I was getting something to drink while I waited just spun off. Meanwhile someone else came in and he was all courteous, greeted and checked in on him. I only know this because the guy is sitting next to me. As a chef and business owner I understand why we have repeat clientele, because we take 5 minutes to engage our clients rather than assume they have to spend their money with me. They don't, and I don't either. The Star on Grand has gone through a few facelifts as their business isn't the same as it use to be. Be mindful when folks patronize your business. Because they don't have to. Signed Chef AK

Yelp
I wanted to try something new tonight as I love exploring new pizza spots. I usually frequent other pizza spots but, decided to try The Star on Grand on Uber Eats. The service/delivery went fine and my review is regarding the Food. I ordered the small meatballs, garlic cheese bread and a deep dish 9inch half meatball and half classic. Meatballs: 6/10 They were good but missed the mark with the flavor of the sauce and the amount of sauce. The sauce, much like other sauces in this review, was lacking in flavor. Overall, the meatballs were moist. Garlic Cheese bread: 7/10 Best thing I ate but, nothing special. 9inch deep dish: 4/10 The pizza had about a scoop of tomatoes on it and definitely unseasoned. I would not choose to eat this pizza again and will choose to frequent my holy grail (Zachary's). I did like that you can choose different halves of the pizza.

Yelp
I love the quality of the pizzas and salads here; it's a large space with plenty of seating and a great ambiance. I'm particularly fond of the lunch specials. It's a steal! Parking can be rough. While there's a small parking lot next to the restaurant, it seems to be reserved for employees.

Yelp
We had a really nice lunch a good vegetarian pizza and the salad was delicious. I highly recommend stopping by- the pizza was with us in about 10 minutes from the order so I call that really fast, our waiter was courteous and made so E good suggestions. I like the interior. It's very well decorated and we sat at a high tip which is great for me to get up and out - I have trouble sometimes- I will be back. The serving size was just right for two- with the salad and the medium pizza - we took some home for dinner the next day-

Yelp
We ordered a 12-inch Deep All Star last night and it was delicious! While $37 is not cheap for one pizza, they did not skimp on the toppings. There was plenty of sausage, meatballs, pepperoni, bacon, tomato sauce, and provolone cheese. It was very hearty and will last us at least one more meal. The small Greek Salad was also more than plenty for 2 people. Sadly, no pictures. The camera did not eat first this time, but we did.

Yelp
Great pizza! I ordered spinach and feta on Focaccia bread. Delicious. The wait staff and manager were friendly. It had been awhile since my last visit, however, when I did return, the pizza was memorable -- in a very good way.

Yelp
Pretty popular pizza spot in our neighborhood so we wanted to see what it is all about! This place gets credit off the bat for making three different pizza styles in house with a variety of options for toppings. If you like pizza you know how hard it is to find one good pizza joint with one style. The service is great, the workers were pleasant which added to our experience of coming to dine in. Food came out very quickly and we definitely had our fill. Now let's get to the food: Starter - Goddess Salad (5/5). It was really delicious and had plenty of texture (crunch) that made this a fun salad to share. The regular size is plenty for a party of 2 to share. They nailed down the combination of flavors and peppered it at the table to our taste. They took their time preparing this. Pizza - We did half and half in the bigger size, California & the All Star. Both DETROIT STYLE. (4/5) Full disclosure, I am from NYC so I am biased toward flat crust, my wife did really enjoy the thick doughy texture. They did a very good job on the crust, corner pieces are a great combo of crunchy and soft dough and toppings. I thought the All Star was a little light on the tomato sauce but that may be because of the style of pizza we selected. The toppings on the All Star were well done, for the amount they put on there it wasn't too crowded and most of it stayed on. The California is a fine choice for this Detroit style. Well balanced greens and balsamic reduction on top of the dough and pesto base was very tasty. A little red pepper flakes on this bad boy and you got a solid pizza. For two people we had about 3 pieces of pizza to take home after we were satiated (8 total to start with). Price wise you are much better coming here to get an above average pizza instead of Round table.

Yelp
We ordered a take out through door dash; The pizzas arrived on time and still hot. The pepperoni pizza had a nice thin crust and the ingredients were fresh. The mushroom one was good too. It is obviously not a pizza cooked in a wood burning oven but as an honest neighborhood pizzeria, it delivers.

Yelp
Happy ten year anniversary to this gem of a restaurant! My friends and I stumbled upon their birthday celebration this past weekend and had an amazing dinner experience. - California: Tangy from the sun-dried tomatoes and fresh from the arugula topping, I don't feel the slightest bit guilty indulging in this pizza. Even the leftovers were delicious. - Carbonara: Creamy and decadent -- if you like the pasta, you'll probably also love this. And I can't say I see carbonara pizza at many pizza places. Definitely recommend getting this! - Cheesy Garlic Dippers: My friends and I loved this. Would probably order it with a veggie side next time since we ended up eating a lot of saucy bread that night LOL Service was speedy, attentive, and super friendly. The restaurant itself is dimly lit and ambient while also lively. Seems to be a great spot for dates and group outings alike. :)

Yelp
Shout out to the Star restaurants! This review is long overdue. This is my frequent go-to for classic, thin crust pizza. Tasty and has high quality ingredients. I was astounded today when I opened up my pie bc they didn't skimp on toppings. It was the most toppings I've ever had on a pizza in my life. Was not expecting it, but wow. I also ordered a side Greek salad, which was good as well with fresh veggies. My only qualm, and it's minor, is that I would prefer traditional feta (soaked in brine), it's creamier and has the salty vinegary flavor, versus the drier President's style brand. Order accuracy is also top notch. Not once have they messed up my order! Last but not least, the person managing pick up was friendly and accommodating. She acknowledged me when I walked in. It's the small things like that that matter. No pics bc I was so hungry I just dove in, but for sure this is a great spot for pizza and salads. Try them out sometime!

Yelp
It's been awhile since we've been to The Star and visited again this week. I'm sorry to say we were disappointed all around. Service was very slow but the place wasn't busy, slow to get our cocktails at the start even. The burrata starter was delicious but we were disappointed with the thin classic sausage pizza. It was just a bit boring. Tried a lemon cheesecake for dessert and wouldn't order that again either. We've always loved the internal ambience here. Perhaps we'll stick to the deep dish pizzas if we come again.

Yelp
My family and I frequented this location for a good 6 years straight since we lived in the neighborhood and even drove to it at least once weekly for several years after after moving to Castro Valley. We stopped frequenting and began dining solely at their sister location in Alameda about 3-4 years ago and every time I walk into this location I am reminded why. We were greeted and seated by a red haired waitress who had an issue with us sitting at the community table which we prefer since it is by the window looking out onto Grand st. Okay, not a big deal, usually isn't a problem otherwise, but proceeded to tell another party who walked in after "feel free to sit anywhere you'd like!" I will note, only one other person was seated in the entire restaurant and already had their food when we walked it. Once seated, another family was seated. We waited to put in an order. Another woman sat at the bar and our server immediately went to this person at the bar and began chatting the woman up, and although this woman sitting at the bar was on Facetime with someone... Our server decided she would take her order... The woman who had JUST sat down before taking ours... She then decides to skip and walk around our table and go take the order of the other party who was also seated after us but before the woman at the bar meaning our order was going in after two parties who arrived and were seated after ours... But it gets worse. I put in my order and had to take a call upon completing my portion of the order, however, my daughter was still seated and placing her order and confirmed my thin crust mushroom pizza order with the server. 5 minutes after my call, our server returns to "confirm" my thin crust order... that I had already put in... And proceeds to advise me she did not put it in because I took a call and that because of this she was unable to confirm my preference of thin versus deep crust, although she asked my daughter who confirmed that yes, I wanted a thin crust pizza. She walks back several minutes later to confirm now for the third time that I want mushroom... and then allegedly is about to put it in, is distracted yet again by two more customers who came in. At this point, our drinks (an Apple juice and Arnold Palmer) have been sitting on the bar and still not brought to our table. Since we have now been sitting 20-25 minutes and our order hasn't even made it into the system according to our server I'm ready to go because it's been made abundantly clear we are not a priority. I was kind enough to let her know we were leaving but she decides to call out "oh! I need you to take care of (pay for) your drinks" so I remind her that she never actually brought us the drinks she wants us to pay for and walked out. I can't tell if it's a staffing issue... or if the neighborhood has simply become so gentrified that it no longer needs to serve minorities, but my half white daughter pointed out to me that it seemed she took and served and pandered to every white party who walked in after us and only went out of her way to have an issue with our table. Other occasions years back I have had to reach out to management out of embarrassment of raving about such an amazing restaurant and bringing out of town guests only to have the rudest service. The last time I had decent or the once stellar service at this particular location was at their anniversary party that I attended with my eldest to which of course had service and food at their absolute best because... Well, who comes to celebrate mediocrity? All the regular staff we knew and loved has gone with the wind and because we love this menu we spend every weekend at the Star on Park in Alameda and only happened in here today because we were down the street at Fairyland and hungry. Never again.

Yelp
My favorite pizza place! They've got the best crunchy thin crust, fantastic cocktails, and rock 90s hip hop and r&b. The staff has always been fantastic and it's kid-friendly. Parking can be tough but it's worth doing a couple loops around the block to enjoy a great dinner,
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious! I had the BBQ Chicken sandwich w/ kettle chips. The bread looks thick, but it actually wasn't. An I loved the fact that it remained crunchy the entire time I ate the sandwich because of how they toasted the bread and added just the right amount of sauce. The service was awesome! Mind you, I went at around 230pm. It wasn't busy at all, but the server was friendly, gave a great dish recommendation and the food was delivered quickly. The server was also very attentive throughout my visit. The ambiance was lovely!! Lighting was nice and cozy, the room had the music of Sam Cooke and others playing softly in the background. It was beautiful. Perfect for a date or for a professional luncheon. The only thing I didn't like was the limited parking. It may have been because of the time of day it was (the parking area was blocked off). All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this place! I will certainly go back soon!

Yelp
The Ambiance Was Great. The Service Was Good and My Meal Was to Die For. I Had The Pork Chop and A Delicious Veggie Side. I Found This Place on a Fluke and Totally Was Not Sure as to How This Was Gonna Go. And It Went So Well, The Food Was Perfectly Plated, Looked Great, Tasted Outstanding and I Will Definitely Be Going Back.

Yelp
We had a great experience today visiting the Star! Their deep dish pizza is legit! They also offer many other menu options including appetizers, salads, sandwiches, etc. It wasn't too busy on a Saturday night so the service was pretty quick Deep dish: It's a pleasant surprise that they let you do half and half even for the 9'' size, so we got to try both the little star and the meatball. We both like the meatball better. Little star deep dish 4/5 Meatball deep dish 5/5: our favorite of the night! Mozzarella went so well with the meatballs and red sauce and the cornmeal crust Other menu items: Roasted broccolini 4/5 was a little rough. I wish they were better roasted with the cheese / had more flavors Winter salad 5/5 really good! Spicy wings 4.5/5
google avatar

Chad M.

Yelp
Went with a large party. Service was good. As for the food I was not a fan. The best pizza was a pesto one. I probably won't be back unless a friend absolutely has to have it. Just to many better options
google avatar

Sadaf S.

Yelp
Usually, I'm not a huge fan of deep dish pizza because I just don't particularly enjoy red sauce but the Star is doing something right. I literally crave their pizza all of the time. Their service is slow and they could actually be a little more friendly but it's always delicious and I enjoy it. Being in the Bay Area where vegetarians/vegans are big, I wish they cater to the non-pork eaters also (ie beef pepperoni or turkey pepperoni) etc.

Betty S.

Yelp
I eat here once a week Salads are excellent Always fresh Wait times are decent Greek salad is the best salad on their menu The app to order is not as effective they need to check it should mirror the menu Hard to order a pizza to add individual items Still that should not stop you from eating here You will love it

Yelp
Wow! Here have I been to Not order Fromm here. excellent Pizzas, Service always polite answers any concerns ...pick up is done in a timely manner always! Nice selection of diff flavors . So far we've tried the All-Star Thin crust large and we are hooked! Also we have "Tried the Burrata & Garlic crostini!" Amazing flavors once again! Can't wait to try other items !

Yelp
The pizza here is AMAZING. The decor is very Art Deco, and the space is gorgeous. Great for a date night or eating with friends.

Yelp
So nice to see that they still take great care of people here. Good beers matched with great food is exactly what I wanted. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I've gone to this location as well as the Alameda location of "The Star". They offer pretty good pizza, I've enjoyed both their Chicago deep dish and detroit (thinner crust) pizzas. I believe their Chicago deep dish crust are cornmeal based which is pretty good. In addition to pizza, they have a lot of different menu options including salads, wings, sandwiches/panini's, plus they have a full bar inside. They also have a small parking lot which gets full pretty easily. Growing up in this area, I've always been a Zachary's fan, but I welcome the competition.

Yelp
Wanted deep dish and have never been to this spot. Went here for an early dinner ~ 5:15pm before a movie on Friday night and while I made a res just in case, there was plenty of seating at the bar/dining room. It took a few minutes standing at the host stand (no one was there and the takeout person didn't say hi either) before anyone acknowledged me, but was seated right away once the one host came back. Not the best first impression. Second not so good impression - when we unraveled our napkins a fork and knife has previous food stains on them; I just didn't use my knife and my husband wiped fork with his napkin (he didn't want to say anything). Service: overall was average/fine once we were seated. Ambiance: is pretty good and also seems like great option for families. Food: We started with 3 meatballs and roasted broccolini (since you gotta get some veggies in the meal), and shared the 12" Little Star deep dish pizza, which was plenty of food for 2 (we only ate about half of the pizza). * The meatballs had decent flavor and a ton of red sauce but were nothing special - rate 3.5/5. * The broccolini was a little on the rough/less cooked side and not really roasted with a sprinkle of parm and was room temp versus hot - 3/5. * The deep dish Little Star pizza with roasted garlic, was buried under so much red sauce/tomato that took up more than half of the pizza topping and didn't have as much cheese or filling as expected. Overall flavor was just okay; the crust was solid and not soggy, but almost like a crouton and just "eh". We also regretted not adding meat to the pie. I'd say 3.5 out of 5. The neighboring tables had the thin crust pizzas which look more like your traditional dough pizza and looked better than ours. We may try that next time. Overall: I'd say this is okay spot to checkout if you're in the area and want some pizza or affordable drinks, but overall nothing memorable or screaming for us to come back.

Yelp
Ordered a 9" Deep 1/2 Pesto Chicken and 1/2 White Pie. My first time ever ordering from the Star franchise. 1) To start off the entire pie was topped with a Tomato sauce which drowned out the Garlic-infused olive oil 2) The crust resembled a "corn meal" style crust which didn't pair well with the pie. I was told Star is supposed to have stiff competition for Zachary's; I think not. Maybe I'll give them a try in the future.

Yelp
Truly my favorite pizza restaurant in the Bay Area! I always opt for the "Thin Crust Pepperoni Pizza" with a side of ranch! The crust is the perfect combination of crispy and soft! Like many other pizza shops, the pies can be a bit oily but I imagine it's because of the pepperoni. The service is always good and the servers are fast, efficient, and pleasant! The ambiance is dark, dim, and cozy! Truly love coming here for friday night pizza and martinis! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Austin W.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped by for lunch on a Friday around noon and the restaurant was completely empty. We got their lunch special which is $11.99 for a personal sized pizza. You can choose either see dish or thin crust and have access to the entire menu of flavors. We opted for the Little Star and the All-Star. As much as the pizzas looked alike, they tasted very different. I personally loved the fried pepperoni on the All-Star while my wife enjoyed the large pieces of roasted spinach in the Little Star. The best part of the pizza though is definitely the crust. The crust tastes like fried cornbread. It's crunchy and stands up against the large pieces of juicy tomatoes in the sauce. The pizzas are large enough that we could only finish 3/4 of our pizza and needed to take the rest home. For around $30, it's about the price I'd expect to pay for lunch in the Bay Area for two.
google avatar

Kimberley Y.

Yelp
So I work in the East Bay - I used to live in SF and loved Little Star. Had to plan a work dinner for a large group and Brian (the manager) was above and beyond helpful in my planning! Flexible, responsive and accommodating. Had a FAB experience - 12 of us - drinks were flowing and great - happy hour was perfect for our appetizers. Steven, our server, was attentive, patient and accommodating - food was delicious - a perfect evening overall - will definitely make this on the regular rotation - thanks for a great evening!

Yelp
It all started with seeing my favorite bartender from Side Bar, Aaron. I stopped in for a one and done, which ended in ordering a sandwich to take home along with two deliciouuuuusss margaritas while I waited for the food. Can't wait to come back for a dinner soon. Awesome spot. Three killer styles of pizza on the menu. Give this place a try. Even my doggie Misha (service doggie) was welcomed. I love this place already and definitely love the neighborhood.

Yelp
Stumbled in on New Years Day. It was perfect for lunch for the day with a nice sangria on the side. The staff was very attentive and the food was excellent!
google avatar

Loreto D.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this wonderful eatery!? This restaurant has been consistently good. I love how they use corn meal crust for their deep dish pizza. The meatballs and their Little Star deep dish is my go-to. Also, the restaurant is spacious and that's always a plus for me. I'll be coming back here real soon.

Yelp
Our favorite pizza in the East Bay for over three years now! We usually get our pizza delivered, and it always comes warm and fresh. Their staff members are always helpful on the phone.

Yelp
Giving 3 because look at these wings that are $12. They were burnt and not even a full order. Haven't been there in a while, and had a craving. Kinda disappointed. Pizza is good
google avatar

Felicia H.

Yelp
The garlic sticks are a must so cheesy and flavorful. The service is amazing they welcomed us with a smile and are very kid friendly which was a plus. I love how they give you sparking water. The atmosphere is nice as well. Highly recommend this place pizza is so delicious the meatballs are so flavorful.
google avatar

DD J.

Yelp
The food is great. The service is inconsistent. My office is nearby so I love to eat their pizza. But it's anyone's guess whether you'll be greeted upon arrival, whether there will be anyone at the takeout counter, whether you'll get napkins...

Shana B.

Yelp
The Star is expensive, but the pizzas are DELICIOUS. My favorite thin crust is Pesto Chicken and my favorite deep dish is Mediterranean. The deep dish has a really yummy, crunchy crust with cornmeal in it. Salads are good, too, especially the Goddess. Note that the sodas come in bottles, so no refills.
google avatar

Jade B.

Yelp
I love this place! The staff is always so nice and accommodating, the drinks are good but this time i only ordered food. The crust on the thin crust pizza is such a nice crispy texture a bit grainy because of whatever they put in the dough. It has a nice vibe to it as well, lighting is a bit low so could be nice for a casual date!

Yelp
Visit Date: 06/21/2023 Pros: * Staff is pleasant * Pizza is delicious Cons: When it comes to your bill, watch out for the FRAUDULENT calculations!! I have attached a copy of my bill and cannot for the life of me figure out how: * the Compliance Surcharge of 3% equates to $4.70 * the Large Party Gratuity of 18% equates to $28.18 * the Sales Tax of 10.25% equates to $17.43 Thoughts: This review is 99% based on the seriousness of the FRAUDULENT calculations of the dining bill. I challenge the readers of this review to plug the numbers into a spreadsheet and figure out how the charges were calculated.

Loved it! Great ambiance with the brick walls, excellent service. We had the meatballs for an appetizer and you can either order 3 or 6. They were soft and delicious. For dinner, we ordered The Little Star with roasted garlic and added sausage. It was great. Loved the crust of this pizza. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Great food! Great atmosphere! Great service! Thin crust is everywhere, but to find really good Chicago style deep dish is rare! The flavor combinations are both familiar and intriguing. Our server Nicole was so sweet and attentive. The place was really busy but the food and the service stayed top-notch!

Yelp
As other reviewers have noted, this is a great spot to grab a pizza and drinks. The special winter Bacon, Mushroom, and arugula were fantastic. For vegetarians, the little gem caesar salad for on point. Pair it with your favorite brew and some good friends and you will have a great time. Parking is available on the street, look for the pay stations and place the print out on your dash. Check them out

Yelp
A solid spot for upscale pizzas. We ordered a chicken and pesto pizza. It tasted great, but the price was a bit steep to me. There was also a bit of a snafu in which the alert to pick up our pizza didn't come until we had already taken the pizza and left. This is a good place for when pizza is appropriate but Domino's is not.

Yelp
Great food! Wonderful ambiance. Every time my dad visits from New York we come here to eat for lunch or dinner. I always get the deep dish classic. The 9 inch is enough for two with three slices each. Can't go wrong!

Yelp
Good good and drinks. The pizza was amazing. Nice crispy not to thick crust. Just right. I had a salad as well. Fresh and good amount. I'll be back!

Yelp
My friend suggested pizza from The Star so we got a large spicy sausage for takeout! I am the type to cover my pizza with a lot of pepper flakes, so the hot cherry peppers was a perfect topping to this pizza. It has everything I liked (spicy sausage, cherry peppers, red onions, & crushed red pepper). Great place to get your pizza fix! Only downside about the area is the parking. Since it is a busy street with a lot of other businesses, it is usually a hit or miss!
