Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes on South Whidbey Island | Eater Seattle

"Langley’s century-old Star Store is a strange combo of a chic clothing boutique, general mercantile, and neighborhood food market, with an entire wine shop hidden in the back. It’s also got a full-service deli, and the fried chicken is just killer. Deli salads and sandos are lovely too, with an array of frou-frou options, making for a perfect snack stop before or after catching a film at the darling Clyde Theater next door." - Meg van Huygen

I've been coming to the Star Store since the 70s, and it's always fun to see what's new. It's partially a grocery store, and partially a clothing/kitchen/home/gift store. There's always so much temptation in this place! The staff are helpful, too. The only drawback is that, in the clothing/kitchen part of the store, it can easily get crowded with people.

X Marks the Spot! Ahoy, savvy shoppers! If you're in the mood for a retail adventure, set your sights on Star Store, the mercantile marvel that's more like a treasure hunt than a typical shopping spree. First challenge: finding the entrance. This place is so cleverly concealed, you’ll feel like Indiana Jones deciphering clues to unearth hidden gems. Hint: follow the quirky signs, it’s all part of the adventure! Once inside, prepare to be dazzled. The store is a labyrinth of eclectic finds, each aisle a new quest waiting to be conquered. From trinkets to artisanal crafts, you’ll discover treasures you didn’t even know you needed. It's like a Pinterest board exploded in the best way possible. The staff? Absolute legends. They’re like your personal treasure maps, guiding you to the best finds with a wink and a smile. Got a question? They’ve got answers as golden as pirate loot. The vibe? Think rustic charm meets whimsical wonderland. It’s cozy, quirky, and absolutely Instagram-worthy. Every corner is a new adventure, perfect for snapping pics that’ll make all your friends ask, Where on earth did you find that?! In short, Star Store is a retail escapade that’s worth every twist and turn. So grab your treasure map (aka your sense of adventure) and dive into the mercantile magic. Trust me, the hunt is half the fun, and the finds are simply priceless. Happy hunting!

The Star Store is truly a gem that combines the best of a high-end grocery store with the charm of a unique mercantile shop. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects their dedication to exceptional customer service. The grocery section is thoughtfully stocked with high-quality products, including an impressive selection of gourmet items, fresh produce, and specialty foods. Their range of local wines and craft beers is outstanding, making it easy to find the perfect pairing for any meal. The mercantile side is equally delightful, offering a curated mix of unique gifts, home goods, and other treasures that make browsing a joy. It’s the kind of place where you always find something you didn’t know you needed. What truly sets The Star Store apart is their customer service. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely eager to help, which makes every visit an enjoyable experience. Whether you’re shopping for high-end groceries, discovering a new favorite wine, or just looking for a special gift, The Star Store delivers on all fronts. Highly recommend!

My wife and I needed dinner but most of the town eateries were closed or only serve meat dishes. Luckily we found the Star Store. They had a deli section that had great vegetarian options for us. The best part was the staff. All of the staff were young, energetic, professional, and extremely nice. I mean nice like you rarely see these days. To the young people working at Star Store near closing time, you guys really made our evening. Thank you thank you❤️👏🙏😎😎

Star Store had a good variety of snacks for a reasonable price. The cheese selection was also surprisingly good. The store itself was clean and well organized. The employees were approachable and helpful.

Google
This is one of my go to store for gifts and for treating myself, and I live a ferry ride away. Beautiful, inexpensive jewelry, cute hats and gloves, kitchen items, tons of clothing, nic-nacs and decorations...its electric and tasteful with quality products. I always make a bee-line to the Star Store whenever I come to Langley. Great little grocery attached (albeit expensive) with lots of international items as well. Such a great little town to meander through and enjoy the cafe and restaurant scene and gorgeous views of the sound. Watch for whales! And Bunnies! Fluffy bunnies of all colors abound throughout town.

Google
Small little store with an amazing selection of all the grocery items you would need! The aisles are very small

Yelp
So many great gifts from which to choose: home goods, funny books and cards, and unique clothing and accessories for all genders and ages. The grocery store is also cute and carries some difficult-to-find brands... but I really just go for the gifts.

Yelp
Nice little supermarket in the middle of downtown Langley. I have only been in the food section of Star Store; there's also a gift, home goods and clothing section I haven't been to yet. I recommend the get anything LOCAL. It's FRESH and PRICING IS RIGHTStaf. Local seafood and meat are fresh. Today I got delicious cod cakes. I saw fresh wild Coho salmon and salmon cakes that look yummy. There's also local eggs and dairy. Take a look at the deli section as well. Once I saw different kinds of quiches. I got the one with ham and it was delicious. The produce is good and well maintained. Staff is usually friendly. The store looks clean in general. Pricing for other things is higher than mainland which is normal...anyhow expect island prices in all stores and restaurants on Whidbey.
google avatar

Yelp
This store is a mix of market and clothing. They have a GREAT variety. Small kitchen to buy food and small produce. Clothing on the other side and more stuff on the other side. Pretty cool stuff inside. I forgot to take photos inside booo

K B.

Yelp
This is probably the swankiest grocery store on the island. They've got everything you need to cook up a feast... or take out from the deli counter. (We love their tuna salad, and the cauliflower/broccoli crustless quiche thing) The produce always looks fresh, well stocked butcher/seafood section, and aisles of whatever you could possibly desire for your pantry. Cold drinks and snacks to appease everyones fancy (and diet).
google avatar

Elie B.

Yelp
Best grocery store on Whidbey. Besides a great selection of the usual stuff, they've got an excellent deli counter with great options for picnics. Favorites include the fried chicken, tuna salad, cauliflower-broccoli crustless quiche, and the Asian noodle salad. Beware of the mildly grouchy staff.
google avatar

Mike O.

Yelp
Want fried chicken? Pristine seafood? Kimchee? Miso? Artisanal boule? Charcuterie? Rare whiskey? House made meals? They got it all. The wine selection is just awesome! I want to live there....

Yelp
Oh my gosh I can't believe all the positive reviews! Yeah the store is great and clean etc. etc. But as we are travelers coming in from a long drive, we are called to check the hours of the deli so we could buy some food before we went to our rental home. We were assured it would be open till 5 o'clock. We got there about 315 and they were just closing up. I was told by the person closing that they had no one to work at the deli so they were closing at four as it was Sunday. However this was on Monday!I indicated it was not even 330 and they said "well too bad we don't have anybody to work." They were somebody behind the deli counter wrapping up all the food and someone else cleaning the deli section. So these persons can work in the store but not sell me a couple of pieces of chicken? They were so rude and nasty I started to cry. I know every business on the island is really shorthanded. I wouldn't expect them to re-open the place once it was closed. But they were clearly employees behind the counter and the food was still sitting in the fridge not wrapped up. Not a great way to start vacation and we were already nervous about during Covid. It's our first trip away from home in over two years and I thought perhaps a small town would be a great place to start. Not at this grocery store.

Yelp
We went to this cute store on our day trip to langley. It has a great clothing store attached, as well as everything to can need during your stay. They were nice enough to allow me to use the restroom, me being the forgetful person I am, I set my wallet on the rack while.washing my hands. Then left and went about my day. I didn't realize I didn't have it, until I was trying to purchase or ferry ticket home (myself, my two kids and my grandmother). I reached out on Facebook and the owner Gene was nice enough to come open the store after it closed. Not only did he find my wallet, everything was still in it. I'm so very grateful to this store and the owner, such good people. I'll come back every time I'm in town.

Yelp
Star Store is quite the destination grocery store and mercantile while visiting Langley. The kiddo and I wandered through - definitely has a little bit of this and that, nice selection, and historical background. It was good to see a lot of locally sourced items on the shelves. BTW - Useless Bay Coffee Company beans were the same price here as the café a block over. That's nice to see no additional markup.

Yelp
Fun store to check out while in Langley and also their smaller store on the Bayview corner. This store has been in Langley forever, however I long for the old Star Store. Much more yuppy and upscale from what I remember growing up coming to this store in the summers I spent on the Island as a kid. Clothes, food, organic produce, deli and bakery are all available here. Pricing on clothes items are mid to high. Fun knick-knacks and cooking items and a nice selection of wines and beers. Definately worth stopping by and looking. Employees are nice and upbeat.

Yelp
What a lovely surprise to stumble upon this beautifully well-stocked market on a trip to Whidby to visit family. The produce is pristine, the seafood fresh and local, the dairy and cheese section is abundant. I even found a full selection of gluten free flours in the baking aisle. What a gem!

Yelp
The star store had so much fun stuff!! Oh em gee...I LOVE IT!! Cute clothes, SUPER cute shoes, purses, etc. Gag gifts, fun goofy items. I could've spent all day in that store. Kitchen gadgets, books, jewelry, seriously fun fun fun. The girls working were FANTASTIC...super friendly, talkative, full of personality. I ended up with a hilarious book about bad words....which everyone that knows me knows it's perfect!! The store has a second side that is a grocery store..tons of stuff. If you're in Langley go to this store!! I really really want to go back!!
google avatar

Yelp
The best store EVER! The buyer is brilliant and the store is colorful and filled with wonderful items. The staff is incredibly helpful and fun...like I said, Best store EVER!

Yelp
What a great general store, or as they describe it, "store and mercantile". After our disappointing meal at the Braeburn Restaurant (see my review) we popped in here to pick up a few essentials, you know, eggs, pancake mix, wine. From the outside, at least entering through the back parking lot, the Star Store seems a bit utilitarian, but that ordinary shell is hiding a gem of a store, one which is surprisingly upscale. Sure the Star Store has all the essentials one would need, but it also has a stellar wine selection, a fresh deli area, apparel, sundries, housewares, knickknacks and more. (Hmm, is "knickknacks and more" a redundant phrase?) The wine department in particular caught our attention. It easily rivals the selection at our local QFC back in the big city and featured many labels that I was unfamiliar with (admittedly not so hard to accomplish). I have a feeling that over our four day adventure on Whidbey well be back to peruse that selection a few times. Everybody was friendly and welcoming despite the obvious "Tourist" label stamped across all of our foreheads. Very impressive all the way around.

Yelp
My 8-year-old daughter thinks Star Store is the best store ever! The toy selection is really fun. As a health conscious traveler with food allergies, I really love SS. The selection is wonderful and the prices are reasonable considering the quality and the fact that it's on an island. I also end up purchasing a fun clothing item each year that I visit.
google avatar

Lucy W. H.

Yelp
Great convenient place to pick up some gourmet items like the happy hippie coffee or a t-shirt for your friend who couldn't make it. Prices are a little on the high side, but it is a fun store with many novelties

Ken M.

Yelp
Usually love the Star Store. Went yesterday after the CDC/State said it's ok for vaccinated to not wear a mask. When I walked in a young clerk told me I needed a mask. I said I thought they weren't needed any longer. She said in a loud, snotty tone: "We're a private business!" I said I guess I'll shop elsewhere. She responded in an equally snotty tone: "Go for it!" I did. Payless in Freeland is following State/CDC guidelines (so is Ace Hardware) by only requiring a mask for unvaccinated.... It will be a long time before I visit the Star Store again...
google avatar

Jaki F.

Yelp
Great selection of produce, which much is local and organic. They also have a solid wine & beer selection. Their customer service is also very friendly, fast and they often ask if you need help carrying your groceries out to your car...who offers that service anymore? :)
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
I LOVE coming here to get supplies when we are staying in Langley. I could spend hours in this store. Beautiful gift items and a wonderful selection of specialty food items. It's a hometown market and specialty store rolled onto one.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Emma in the deli area was soo helpful and awesome! Exactly what customer service should be!!! This girl should be doing more for the store than just standing behind the deli counter!! Will be back during my vacation to see her more!
google avatar

Megan B.

Yelp
I'm deducting a star for not having Penn Cove mussels. Hello? Aren't they from the island? Otherwise, I think the selection here WAS great. I was particularly impressed by the wine section. There were some awesome bottles in there!
google avatar

Peter S.

Yelp
Since moving here it's been a joy to go to the Star Store. They always seem to have anything I need (and want) and the associates are awesome and extremely helpful. Thank you Kaua and Andy for being so helpful and friendly!
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
I love love love Langley. I like to think that if I became a full time, soceity-rejecting artist or writer type I might live somewhere like this little town. A town where some serious (if low key) shopping can happen. That small town but fun shopping vibe is happening in the Star store. Super friendly help, hip clothes, nice shoes and bags, wine, funny gifty stuff (like those faux mexican candles like the goddess of cat ladies), upscale foods, and cute undies and kids' stuff. They know how to decorate for the holidays, too. Star store, if I lived in Langley I'd be worshipping your stupid hotness all the time.
google avatar

Amie S.

Yelp
It's true, I've been consistently impressed every time I've had to run in here to buy something. They've got a pretty sizable stock for being a small, local store - and the prices aren't bad either. The usual suspects are here, as well as some good deli finds and fresh produce - all at decent prices. The perfect place to hit up if you're looking for some picnic food, a snack or even just a cold drink. Their wine & beer selection is impressive as well.
google avatar

Liz O.

Yelp
This store is lackluster. It's very cluttered and has a 99 Cent Store feel minus the high price tags. Yes, there is a portion of the store that has clothes and shoes along with other accessories, however the layout of the store really gives a 'thrift' vibe that personally isn't the ambience I'm looking for when going grocery shopping. That said, you can get the basics and then some here, and their selection of gourmet chocolates was impressive.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
I could not live on the island without the Star Store - in fact it is one of the reasons we moved here. It's obviously run by foodies. This small store is packed with all the essentials. It's the best year round source for organic and conventional fruits and vegetables. There's always a small, but pleasant selection of fish, poultry and meat. The isles are well stocked with dry goods from around the world for all your cooking needs. The deli counter isn't bad (the sandwiches at their Bayview location are a bit better). And the wine selection is great. There's also kitchen goods, clothes and more next door!
google avatar

Jen K.

Yelp
We spent a week in Langley and this store was fantastic. Laura S described it well. All of the essentials, but definitely not of the convenience store variety. Much more high end with quality fruits, vegetables and all the basics. It isn't a cheap place to shop, but (a) there aren't many other options close by and (b) we ate really well that week!
google avatar

Geoffrey C.

Yelp
Perhaps not the thriftiest place to buy groceries, the wine selection is second to none on South Whidbey -- a great selection of French and Italian wines in addition to the regular NW varieties. My wife loves coming here to pick up a fun gift for birthdays/baby-showers/etc.
google avatar

Misha G.

Yelp
Great assortment of housewares, clothing, toys and groceries! The buyer has great taste. Something for everyone and every budget.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
This is the cutest store. The staff was so friendly and helpful. I just bought some cardigans and a scarf. I wanted to buy the whole store! I didn't get to look around as much as I wanted because I didn't have time but I will definitely be coming back next time we visit the area. I saw cute boots and kitchen items! I'm excited to come back!
google avatar

Maureen M.

Yelp
The Star Store is fabulous. Stylish quality women's clothing, kitchen sundries, unique gifts. I hear it's up for sale; I hope it'll retain its charm.
google avatar

Kate W.

Yelp
If you're looking for some gourmet chocolate, or organic asparagus, or locally-made olive bread, or Port Townsend Cirrus cheese, or sparkling rose, Star Store is the place for you. (And we were looking for those things, because those were our Star Store purchases!) They have a great selection of specialty, fancyish food, at relatively reasonable prices. (Disclaimer: my boyfriend and I got engaged just before consuming all of the Star Store purchases listed above, so I could be a bit biased about this place. But even without a proposal, who wouldn't love toasted olive bread spread with Port Townsend cheese, with a glass of sparkling rose?!)

Zim B.

Yelp
They sell our favorite fried chicken from their mini-deli. It's not overly salty and there are no factory-farmed off-flavors from the meat which is rare nowadays. Seems that the prices have gone up a lot recently but it's hard to fault them for that right now.

Lia Y.

Yelp
The staff here are incredibly unfriendly and unhelpful. Go to The Goose instead, they are so kind and welcoming and have a much better and wider selection of groceries. I won't be coming back to the Star store after this experience and will only be shopping at the goose.
google avatar

Allison W.

Yelp
The Star Store is the bomb. There's a grocery store and a clothing/gift store, in one building. The deli makes delicious pre-prepared food, like dohlmas and tuna salad and pastas. Oh, there is also a really nice wine store in the building. The staff is very knowledgeable and there's a good selection of wine. The store itself has a really nice feel and atmosphere. There is loads of good food and cute clothing.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
Best described as a modern general store, this is a mandatory stop for us when we visit Langley. It's a great place to get picnic supplies on the way to one of the parks on the island. More likely, we usually find something we never new we needed and it follows us home. Everything from food to fibers can be found.
google avatar

Jerry G.

Yelp
Highs: novelty gums, toy store, beer and wine selection, island merchandise. Lows: Too much stuff crammed into too little space
google avatar

Elaine L.

Yelp
Whatever you want, the Star Store has. Excellent selection of basics including lots of locally produced goods, and a really good clothing/gift store to boot. One stop to get your locally sourced eggs, those cute martini glasses for cousin Darla's birthday, and a bottle of Sparkle Donkey tequila? SOLD! Take the time to rest your dogs in the Starbox out back.
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
Their manager did call me and my friend separately to listen to our sides and apologize, so they can have one more star. I would have preferred it just didn't happen, though.
google avatar

Liana C.

Yelp
Wonderful selection of high quality food and drinks, as well as a fantastic chocolate selection! Also a great local fashion clothing and accessory section- just be prepared to spend more than you would at a chain convenience store!
google avatar

Drew Y.

Yelp
Great for gluten free, organic, and vegans. High quality food and alcohol and very friendly staff. Highly recommend. Never checked out the apparel section but looks pretty cool.

Kevin F.

Yelp
I have been coming to the star store for over 20 years. I recently had the pleasure of on two occasions having the snooty older blonde checker/manager express her frustration with me accessing the cigar cabinet after I had been on numerous occasions extended the courtesy to self serve. The first time I had to explain to her the cigars did ring up at the check stand. She was adamant they did not. They did. There are a couple which don't and I know which ones don't. I don't even work there. So the first time I just wrote it off to her having a long day. Now twice she is either very unpleasant in general or has targeted me specifically. So role of the dice shopping at the star store. Almost everyone else has always been awesome. So I can continue to shop there or elsewhere. I think I will chose to go elsewhere. The Red Apple has just as great a selection of cigars and have always been gracious. Way to go Star Store alienating another local.
google avatar

tammi s.

Yelp
For a small local store, they have it all - a full line of organic foods, including meat, dairy and produce. They have a great selection of just about everything. They even have a sizeable bulk spice section. And, their deli salads and mini quiches are delicious!!! Oh, and I almost forgot... They have the best wine section of any store on the island. I really trust their reviews!
google avatar

Dawn R.

Yelp
If you are looking for great natural products, there is a good chance you will find them here. Overwhelmingly delicious selection of candles, lotions, bath goods...but also herbal cough drops, supplements etc. I was pleased to find one of those stainless steel water bottles here that I had been meaning to pick up. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Well worth browsing if you are in Langley!
google avatar

Crystal M.

Yelp
This is a must see! Half the place is a grocery store and the other half is a retail store. The retail store is jam packed with all kinds of unique stuff and the most adorable boutique clothing. The employees are swanky and helpful. We bought pic-nic food, a knitted hat, a journal and mini walkie-talkies... I love this place.

Elena G.

Yelp
My favorite store in Langley. From groceries to adorable clothes to funny gifts and adorable cutlery and serve ware. Only downside is that the store is hard to maneuver (small walkways).
google avatar

Mia M.

Yelp
Very unique and fun! The clothes/gift half has an interesting mix of clothes for all ages. I was surprised to find so many things suited for a younger crowd given the demographic of Langley. I found an amazing faux-leather jacket here and the salespeople were the perfect combination of helpful/encouraging and hands-off. Plus it's also a grocery store! I love it!
google avatar

Michael I.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Can easily spend an hour or more just looking at the variety. I love the selection of food items. The meat and produce all look so fresh, and it's very affordable to shop here! I'd move to Langley just so shop here!

Kim B.

Yelp
There was so much good stuff in here. It was fun fir my daughter and I to go through everything. The staff was friendly and helpful. Spent more than I had planned on but not sure when I'll be back here so bought while I was here. Very nice island shop!
