Austin’s New Restaurant & Bar Openings

"Not to be confused with The Austin American-Statesman—the local paper with headquarters just a few blocks away—The Statesman is a fancy cocktail bar and restaurant on West 6th Street. On the menu, expect to find classic American dishes with the occasional Texas twist (think pimento mac and cheese and Parker House rolls with garlic chili butter). Tables also come equipped with a “champagne button” for bubbles on demand. " - nicolai mccrary

First time trying this restaurant as my gf was hungry before we were supposed to have a night out drinking. The space looks elegant and much better than it did as a bar, the booths are pretty small though- it’s a lot of two people booths around the bar. I started with the añejo anciano, it was a good cocktail, tasted similar to an old fashioned. For starters we got the meatballs and deviled eggs. The meatballs were very good, cooked well- tender and with a rich sauce, some of the best meatballs I’ve had.($18 for 3) Deviled eggs were eh, I mean they were okay but $16 for 2 whole eggs I’d expect better. They are covered with caviar but it doesn’t add much to flavor, just some texture. My gf got the chicken Parmesan for an entree which was okay, I thought it was kind of dry and would be much better with more sauce. I got the statesman burger, this was very good, I’d say it’s the best thing we ate. The patty on the burger was very rich and cooked very well, I can’t rave enough about the burger. For sides we got the torn potatoes which were eh, I thought they were kind of bland. We also the pimento Mac and cheese, which I thought I didn’t like pimento cheese. Well I’m not sure if that’s true now cuz I definitely liked the Mac and cheese- I took some home and I liked it even more reheated. Overall the food was pretty good, but do I think the quality of food matches the price- not sure tbh. I spend allot of money on food frequently and I’m not sure I felt the bang for my buck here. Definitely better options for the same price point. The service was pretty good as well. I know the area pretty well because I worked on the street for a few years, but I will say most times of day parking will be fairly difficult to find, especially without a walk.

The Statesman is the new hot spot to eat and drink on 6th street!! We celebrated four birthdays and very impressed with the quality of the food and service!! We loved the many options offered on their menu. There is something for everyone and especially considering food allergies. The seafood is amazing!! Succulent oysters, tuna tartare and calamari! Perfect satisfying portions that allow room to taste more items on the menu. Steaks were cooked to perfection and the sauce on the ribeye is to die for!! We enjoyed tasty cocktails and wine with our meals, and everything paired beautifully! The Statesman has a cool Austin vibe yet classy but not a stuffy atmosphere like most fine dining restaurants. We were all very impressed for the fact that the restaurant is new and they are already killing it! We can’t wait to return and highly recommended it!!

I’ve eaten at this place a few times now and the food just gets better each time. Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. AND who doesn’t LOVE the champagne button!! Highly recommend this place for great food, amazing drinks and awesome vibe. Definitely recommend the smokey old fashioned tequila!

I came to the statesman last night and had and overall great experience with the food! For where it is located, & what you are paying, The flavors stand on their own, and the portion sizes are HUGE! I would recommend the crab agnolotti, wagyu steak, Fried mozzarella, and shrimp cocktail!

If I only consider the food, I probably would give them 3.75/5 stars but when considering value and quality, they drop to 3 stars. I will return for the burger and truffle flatbread although I thought they were overpriced. ———- Star of Texas: very good Moontower sour: really good Deviled Eggs: plain. Needed salt and seasoning Truffle & mushroom flatbread: excellent! It was very good!! Statesman burger: very moist and flavorful but it was really small. I also didn’t care for the fries, they were closer to steak fries rather than crispy fries Crispy cauliflower: good Shishito: just ok. They were very spicy and no unique flavors Basque cheesecake: it had a bitter taste, the apples bites were the best part of the dessert

We came for brunch and enjoyed delicious cocktails, a mimosa flight, and each of us got a different brunch entrée. I had a hard time deciding which one was my favorite because they were also delicious! I highly recommend the Ricotta pancakes! I can't wait to come back and try the dinner menu. The entire restaurant looked like it was out of a magazine and everything was so cute and well thought out!

Have dined here twice now and both times blown away. I see why this is the new hotspot and all of the celebrities are making this their hangout. You have to try the SS Margarita and of course press the champagne button. Oysters are out of this world and so is the tuna tartar to start. I saw the avocado pizza the first time and really couldn’t wrap my head around how that could be good. Tried it on my second visit and wow! My favorites on dinner menu are chicken au jus, chicken parm, and lobster ravioli. I’ll definitely go here any time I’m on west 6th and date nights.

What makes this a super club? I confirmed no membership fees, no membership at all. So. What makes it a “super club”? My lovely waitress explained (she had to do her own independent research to be able to answer this - because apparently the management team had not bothered to supply their staff with an answer a missed opportunity for sure) a supper club simply means limited menu and hours of operation. Ok. Fair. Apparently it also Means you pay for your own valet and no provided parking as well. The menu that they went with seems to be based on someone’s personal preferences rather than having a “theme” or “style” of food. There is a hint of an Italian undercurrent with meatballs and chicken parmigiana - but I would never call this an Italian spot. The menu almost feels like what a mob boss might want to have on offer for his night out. It has a high end price point for a restaurant wedged between bars for early 20 somethings. The stretch of west 6th it inhabits is better known for loud music and drinks served in plastic cups than $65 steaks. The crowd was one of my favorite parts - no one seems to know what this place is or who it is for so everyone is showing up right now. There was some old Austin money set in their boots, vests, and old money finery. At the booth next to them was a young up and coming Austin hip hop scene member, who seemed to be on a date. The rest of the guests seemed to be everyone in between. It has been a while since I have seen a diverse and truly Austin crowd. This place is new and taking a LOT of risks. Not all are landing. That’s ok if the management team takes time to find this spots “voice”. I hope they find their voice. That it stays as off beat and weird as it has started. Austin could use more weird in its restaurant scene.
